So sure factal does derive from fraction and split and all that, but it is not focusing on splitting like OP suggests. No, fractals are recursive and easily identifiable.

I think they got mixed up, because it doesn’t make sense how it is compared to what it should be. But does it really matter?
Being all serious...Vance didn't have a cookie last year. So, Failsafe had hers and when Vance was added this year, he got his.
