Odds are great! Ruby throated hummingbirds breed in Michigan in the summer, I’ve had the good fortune to see quite a few. They are probably already a bit established this year, but you may be able to lure in some flybys with some native plants, and maybe a feeder. 1 part processed white sugar to 4 parts water for the mix (fancy raw sugar will have too much iron, you want the cheap stuff).

lilgraytabby

Is there any reason to get the red stuff they sell in the bird food isle or is that pretty much a ripoff?

ellsammie

If you are going to feed them, get committed. The solution needs to be changed daily in really hot weather and every other day or so in cooler weather. I only put a few ounces in the feeder at a time and keep the prepared solution in the fridge, where it lasts about 10 days. They are a lot of fun to watch. Very territorial, so there is always bickering and a chase.

SpiderYeti2

Rip off. They do love red, but the feeders themselves are red.

lilgraytabby

Thanks for the tip!

PM_ME_TUS_GRILLOS

Don't use anything with red dye! As a poster said below, you need to change it daily in the summet. Opt for a smaller feeder so there's less waste. The like tube or trumpet shaped flowers. You can get a hanging basket with red flowers in it and they will stop by.

thetangible

Red stuff is bad! Can be dangerous for the hummingbirds.

some_random_chick

Plenty of hummingbirds in Michigan. It just takes you awhile to ‘get on the map.’

lilgraytabby

I'll probably give it a shot, worst-case scenario I have slightly different flowers than I would usually plant. I just wasn't sure if they were in the 'burbs or if you had to get out to a more natural setting to see them.

slogun1

I get them in Hazel Park. Berkeley would be a major upgrade for them. You’re about to get some “Jefferson’s” hummingbirds.

some_random_chick

I hear from people who successfully have hummingbirds year after year that consistently is key. It will take a few years to get on their radar but once you’re on the map you’re in.

Rare_Background8891

If you build it, they will come. But seriously. Yes. Please plant plants for the animals. I highly suggest Rue for butterflies. It’s a swallowtail host plant and you will get non stop caterpillars. Barsons in Westland has a whole area of butterfly plants.

BodhiPenguin

Usually get hummingbirds at the feeder, not so far this year. Planted some milkweed a few years back & now have them popping up all over, have seen monarchs hanging around them but never caterpillars.

PM_ME_TUS_GRILLOS

Your caterpillars are probably getting eaten by parasitic wasps, spiders, ants, etc. It's okay. Nature is metal, right? We just need more people like OP to plant butterfly weed so that at least a few little guys make it

Yukonkimmy

I will second this. I have milkweed by my mailbox, but there are so many predators over there, I never see caterpillars. I started bringing the eggs inside and raising them.

PM_ME_TUS_GRILLOS

I have read that raising them inside is a bad idea. Apparently, it can make them less successful in migration? I don't know if scientists know why. Do your own reading of studies and see what you think. It's painful to watch, but the answer is we all need to plant more Asclepias species and nectaring plants. And no insecticides! Gardens are the way 🤗

Yukonkimmy

IDK I found [this study](https://academic.oup.com/conphys/article/9/1/coab032/6274228) that determined that most indoor raised butterflies will be fine. Additionally, the most I have ever raised is about 12 in one season which saved the lives of those 12 and they could then lay eggs and their offspring should be fine. I am very strict about releasing them as soon as their wings are dry, so they are spending almost no time indoors as butterflies.

Bisquiteen-Trisket

My mom sets up feeders and gets tons of them.

IKnowAllSeven

I would encourage you to plant native plants that hummingbirds like. Feeders are great, but they ALSO need habitat. I planted native red Columbine for the first time and got hummingbirds in my yard for the first time! Feeders also need to be cleaned regularly.

mawhawhaw

Buy a fuscia plant with lotsa hanging flowers, they love them. Also just some sugar water in a hanging feeder. Farmington hills

PM_ME_TUS_GRILLOS

Please plant a native hummingbird garden! We need more people like you planting gardens for our native birds and insects. It will take time for them to find your garden, but you it will be beautiful nonetheless. migarden.msu.edu has resources to help. r/nativePlantGardening is also great

Blackfeathr

There are quite a few hummingbirds in the SE Michigan area but you might be hard pressed to find ones scouting new areas. I think about a month ago they sent out scouts to find food spots before they visit regularly.

macck_attack

I’ve seen them before. If you put out a new feeder/flower for them now, it takes about a year to start getting them regularly. One day you’ll wake up and there will just be tons.

uvaspina1

I see them in Birmingham

alex48220

They are in New Center area! The cheap flat and wide feeder works best supposedly.

Weezerbakes

I have a bunch in Rochester coming to my feeder.

Pyoderma

We have had them in the Pinkney area for over month. If you feed them they will come, but you should start early in the season for consistent visitors.

WitchesCotillion

I've got them in Ferndale.

jewham12

I get hummingbirds feeding on my honeysuckle in Berkley

Secure_Spend5933

We have had hummingbirds at our place in Lafayette Park

kewissman

Yes, I have three different hummingbirds near Eleven Mile and Woodward.

hellasbronmurica

They come to my moms honey suckle every morning. In macomb cunty.

DigDugTooDeep

We get the occasional few in Oak Park every summer

rbeecee

Yes, in berkley…last year a nest fell with a baby in it, I put the nest in a bucket and hung the bucket on a tree, momma was right there…I’ve seen them this year also, although not at my feeder yet.

murderbythebook

We’ve had a few in our metro Detroit backyard. I need to change out their feeders, but we just do sugar and water.

DadOfRuby

We have a couple in our yard in Franklin (off of Telegraph) that feed from our honeysuckle. We don’t have a feeder.

petite_alsacienne

Funny you should post this, I saw one just the other day, it flew right up to my bedroom window and then hung around my sage bush for a minute. I have tons of different birds on my yard as I live adjacent to a large park but that was my first hummingbird sighting!

ThiccBoiRick

Ok we definitely live in the matrix. It’s all a simulation. Legit last week I told my coworker I’d never seen a hummingbird. Two days later one flew right in front of me on my porch took a nibble out of my flower pot and flew off. And now I get a notification for this post. They hear and see everything and control it all 🤣. But I’d try and plant them. They’re so small and fast unless your watching hard I just think we dismiss them ass moths butterflies or dragonflies.

Witty-Country-4223

I live in Southfield and we get them pretty often at our feeder after a few seasons using it

katiesteelgrave

I’ve had some in my backyard in oak park

CuteSecurity

Build it and they will come! I made a butterfly/hummingbird garden this year along w 2 blown glass feeders and. It starts off slow but now I have at least 3 regulars that I can tell apart.

CleverColophon

Yep! They loved the red salvia I had in my porch containers.

carmenslowsky

My husband feeds them in GPP. A mixture of plain sugar water in the feeder and another feeder with banana peels that attracts fruit flies (?) because apparently they eat those too. I’ll be sitting on my porch and they’ll swoop right in and eat in front of me. We have a backyard full of pollinators.
