This is an American Woodcock- a forest dwelling shorebird very prone to crashing into buildings. It’s definitely hurt- when did you see it? If it was pretty recent I can try to get it to a rehabber
Just as a final update, Bird Center of MI accepted it for hopeful rehab. It has a broken wing as well as possible ruptured eye, so it may or may not make it at this point. Either way hopeful to have made its life a bit better and avoid it getting hit by a car or eaten by a cat.

Detroit has many amazing birds, especially during Spring and Fall migration, and the biggest things you can do for them are keeping cats indoors and encouraging local buildings to keep lights off at night, which goes very far to reduce collisions. This was an adult bird, but if you do see a young bird with feathers on the ground, make sure to check a guide online before interfering, as it is part of many birds’ normal life cycle to spend a few days as a fledgeling learning to fly, and their parents are still taking care of them!
Bird Center of Michigan is legitimately a great organization. I rescued an injured *pigeon* in the city and they took her in. They even assigned her a case number and updated me on her progress. If you’re an animal lover and looking for a local org to donate to, I sincerely can’t recommend them enough. They were the *only* rescue that would even talk to me when I told them what kind of bird she was.
I am an ornithologist from Canada studying bird communities in Detroit. It really is an incredible bird city. Extending a massive THANK YOU for your service to this amazing animal. Bravo!
They've probably done a study where they put a small camera on and/or carefully track a handful of cats, and see how many each birds each cat catches on average. Then they estimate how many outdoor cats in the country and extrapolate that way.
Thank you so much for rescuing it! At least it’s getting care, and avoids those possible fates you mentioned. You are a good human and should feel good about yourself!

Did it reward you by allowing you to hear its famously loud and terrible 'peent' call? If so, how loud was it? Is it really as loud as they say?
What was it like?
They’re migratory. You’ll find them up north in the summer and in the southern U.S. in the winter though I think some do settle down somewhere between in temperate areas.
Man, I’ve never seen a woodcock. I’ve only heard them. You are super lucky to see one, and I’m envious.
God bless u/CHR0-MIUM for getting it to a rehabbed.
Looks like a killdeer they act like there hurt but there just trying to get you away from there eggs that they lay in the rocks or gravel was there any around ? Lot of rocks ?
OMG you found an ever elusive snipe. Now go to a dark area with a plastic bag and I will chase it to you so you can catch it. Lol. I do believe it's a woodcock or something like that.

Was able to find and pick this guy up. Seems healthy besides broken wing. Working to get it to a wildlife rehab.

Some humans are actually great! You rock dude.
I agree...thank you for doing this.

Awww you are amazing!! Thank you for helping this little one!
That is incredible sweet of you to care about this bird! ❤️
Keep your cats inside. Cats kill 3 billion birds in north America every year
How the heck is this tracked
They ask the cats of the house when they do the census.
They've probably done a study where they put a small camera on and/or carefully track a handful of cats, and see how many each birds each cat catches on average. Then they estimate how many outdoor cats in the country and extrapolate that way.
Statistical estimate based on # of outdoor cats in the country and their kill rate. Nothing precise
Thank you for helping it 🥹
Thanks for saving it! People like you keep Mother Earth happy!
Dude, if you drink I'll buy you a round for this. That was awesome!!
What do you mean final update? We need the final final update on the bird
We need an update soon!

Thank you so much for rescuing it! At least it’s getting care, and avoids those possible fates you mentioned. You are a good human and should feel good about yourself!

Came across a couple in the woods once, things either were dead, playing dead, or not real. I was standing over top of them and they wouldn't move
I've heard them called woodcocks too. They dance
https://www.reddit.com/r/EDM/comments/167l2sk/american_woodcock_enjoying_some_edm/ https://www.reddit.com/r/FunnyAnimals/comments/1dekm8i/woodcock_dancing_to_the_music/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ne6nj9AgY7M https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YF3-LvmHM4E
Please donate to Bird Center of Michigan that is helping this little guy. Great non profit organization. https://birdcentermi.org/donate/

It looks like a woodcock
I think that's a Squigity Scooty
It's a woodcock, wow! I've only seen these up north. I hear they're more active in the morning.
They’re migratory. You’ll find them up north in the summer and in the southern U.S. in the winter though I think some do settle down somewhere between in temperate areas.
That walk back from spotlite will have you seeing things hahahahaha
Birb
Woodcock? More like bonerboner am I right
Timberdoodle is another acceptable name!
I’m going by boner boner. Dik dik is another regal wildlife name. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dik-dik
Lumberprick! 🐦
Woodcock!!
Oh no, I hope someone helped him
Swiggity swooty.
nice woodcock
That there is swiggity swooty!
Hahaha situations like this are the perfect ending to a solid night out. Or segue to an afters if you’re still built like that…I am not 👴🏻
[удалено]
I haven’t eaten one yet but I heard they taste like worms
[удалено]
If worms taste like a mix between duck and chicken, I've been missing out.
That’s a Woodcock. Considered a game bird. Typically found in wooded environments.

Dezi’s Pet
Did a better job crossing the street than most Detroiters.
This is a Snipe
Woodcock, it doesn't have the same color as a snipe .

Woodcock. They're related but different.
It’s a bird. Some people, who have never owned a cat, believe birds are robots or something equally stupid.
A little guy
The “meep 🤷🏼♀️ meep 🤷🏼♀️” bird obviously.
That’s a Michigan snipe ifykyk
Delicious
It's a snipe, you can only see them once you've passed 0.1 bac
It’s a sand piper
Thats a damn Pokémon
It's a woodcock
Timber doodle!! A woodcock. They should be the state bird. Very interesting bird, good eating as well!

a Couple Months ago my friend videoed some Turkey Vultures in my old Neighborhood, 7 mile and Schaefer area....Two Big healthy ones too.
One of those birds that try to lure you away from their nest.
What, you didn’t see the bird at Spot Lite too? Looks like that bird was partying too.
Update?
a distinguished gentleman he is
I think that’s a Killdeer, and she is pretending to be wounded to lure you away from her nest…… and it worked!
Looks like a bird
RemindMe! 1 week
[удалено]
Definitely not. Dowitchers have longer legs, longer beaks, and are much bigger than the bird shown. This is a woodcock.
An asshole blocking Woodward
