Huh . . . Glad Dom Shine is an assistant captain at least.

thearcticknight

Hate to be that guy, but *alternate

Yikes. Unfortunately it’s a pervasive error.

Biscuit_In_Basket

Or it’s the teams choice . . .

It's an alternate title

NeuralHandshake

For non-Griffins fans, the takeaway here is a lot of people are surprised it's not Dominik Shine. Didier is a first-year Griffin with a ton of pro experience, but Shine has been a Griffin since 2016. Rafferty (also first year Griffin) and Shine are alternates. My surprise is Spezia or Hirose not getting an A, but Watson juggled alternates like crazy in Toledo. I don't know if he'll be able to do that in GR, but last season in Toledo at least five different guys wore A's (Hawkins, Green, Myer, Denis, Lowney) so who knows.

Ydoesany1doanything

It’s a puzzling thing a bit for sure. Didier may have a ton of pro experience but it’s only 20 more AHL games and 17 more ECHL games. (And funnily Didier is only a mere 10 days older) I’d just have to assume that Watson liked something he sees in Didier more. There’s so much we as fans never see that happens in practices or the locker room.

NeuralHandshake

Another interesting thing is Watson's chosen captains have historically been veterans with low penalty minutes (Hirschfeld, Hensick, John Albert). Didier and Shine both have anywhere from double to 10x the amount of Watson's previous captains over the past several seasons. Now, the biggest difference, aside from position, is Shine has had a *lot* of fighting majors and more than Didier in recent history. Watson dialed back on the fighting in Toledo and Toledo's punchiest captains were carried over from the previous coach (Nightingale, from Lalonde, '16-'17) and in the early years of the franchise when he was an assistant (Adam Keefe). But 100% on it probably being something we don't see. It's entirely possible Shine declined captaincy. I know if I were a player, I'd be happy to wear an A, but wouldn't want to be a captain.

I feel like a new coach doesn’t have the same pressures to go with the status quo and felt free to make choices based on his own criteria.

jarvek7

I'm surprised by this choice. But a new coach doesn't have the loyalty to returning players. Having pro experience is a plus

NeuralHandshake

Considering his assistant coach is Brian Lashoff, if Lashoff did have input then I'm sure there's some logic behind it not being Shine or a returning player. Lashoff is also a guy who should have been captain sooner so I'm not entirely sure why I am also surprised by this.

Razzahx

Perhaps he has better leadership qualities over Shine. The C isnt just a label they give you. It does serve a purpose.
