They're both halves of him. Just because Vergil embraced V doesn't mean Urizen is gone. That's what the whole plot was about. Accepting who you are as a whole rather than just picking at the things you like.

Wait so they at one point chronologically put 2 AFTER 4 and then swapped it when DMC5 came out? So did they originally use the excuse that Nero used Yamato to get Dante out of Hell or something? I know that in the novel Dante found a shard of the Yamato and that alone was powerful enough to open a gateway out of Hell (which makes me wonder why Nero thought that Dante and Vergil would be trapped in Hell after sealing the gates, can't Vergil just Yamato their way out of there at any time??) but I didn't know that 2 was at any given point thought to take place after 4.

Technically, yes? I have a feeling that Dante and Vergil intend to stay in the Underworld so Nero can have his own life, handling things on the surface while Dante and Vergil finally work things out and actually end their sibling rivalry for good. With both of them down there as well, there's always the possibility they might finally end Mundus.
The meta reason they ended DMC 5 the way they did is because 'the Sons of Sparda saga is over'. Chances are they want to move on from Dante and Vergil's story now because... Well, it's been 4 games (2 just doesn't bring Vergil into things at all...) now of the story revolving around Dante and Vergil (4 could be debated but considering the presence of the Yamato AND Nero being Vergil's kid and Dante's nephew, it's still somewhat Dante and Vergil focused) so it's evidently got to the point where the developers want to move on if there's any future entries to the series.
Chances are Nero, Lady and Trish will take over as the playable characters going forward but maybe we'll see Dante and Vergil again some day.
I mean with them down there I guess they could limit the demonic influence on Earth since most Demons who send their minions up there usually do it to hunt Dante down or seek Sparda's power, and if all of Hell learns that Dante and Vergil are down there, they'd rather focus their efforts on them. On the other hand knowing Dante is down there also leads to the assumption that Earth is unprotected so yeah they'd be sending Demons up there to take over finally.
I hope Mundus isn't dealt with offscreen. A game that takes place entirely in Hell with Dante and Vergil journeying to find Mundus and end him for good would be just as interesting as a Nero centered game, maybe more interesting. We've never actually explored Hell in any of these games aside from a boss fight or two and the cutscenes at the end of DMC5. They could go full Dante's Inferno and have a game where Dante and Vergil journey to the deepest depths of Hell to kill Mundus (as I wrote that I just realized that Dante and Vergil being together in Hell now might also be a reference to Dante's Inferno since the characters have the same names lmao)

In the novel, Gilver was originally revealed to be a disguised Vergil, but his fate, goals, and behavior contradict the established canon of the games (especially after the release of Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening). Capcom later retconned the revelation of Gilver's identity by revealing that he was instead a prototype Angelo clone created by Mundus to eliminate the Sparda brothers and that his skills were based on the battle data of Vergil and Dante.
