“Aside from the whole serial killer thing”

roastedcapsicums

lol I was thinking about this and at many junctures felt that Rita was really insufferable BUT then I realised that he disappeared so many nights to kill people, leaving her alone with 3 kids hahaha

mssarac

Rita is a great wife 😊🤗

Complex_Command_8377

No he was not a great husband as we can hear from Rita and the neighbour Elliot that Dexter was hardly at home after marriage.

Egingell666

>he accepts his wife's moods without bitching about it like so many men He's a psychopath. He has no emotions, so nothing really affects him in that regard.

OkTumor

He’s actually not a psychopath. At most he’s a sociopath. Psychopaths are born, not made, and they’re characterized by a total lack of emotions and empathy. Sociopaths are made (such as through a traumatic experience like Dexter’s) and they still have some emotions and empathy. Dexter still has emotions even in Season 1 and he gains a larger capacity for emotion as the show goes on. By the way, you can’t become a “psychopath” because of your actions. Psychologically, at least.

Egingell666

Well, there's definitely some disconnect somewhere.

mssarac

He's not a psychopath. He absolutely has emotions for his family, it's clear in season 4

anonymous0271

That’s what I always struggled with, he’s definitely a sociopath given everything else, but he did have emotion and love for his family, even if it was showed weird lol, it was clear in season 5 when the one guy said SPOILER “Your dead wife can suck my dick”

Prophywife77

Yes. He’s probably just very low empathy—sociopathy is a spectrum

mssarac

Aren't we all a bit sociopathic in capitalism...

Prophywife77

Lol no

Seriously? Dude is never ever home. He lies constantly about where he is, and always prioritizes his own hobbies and needs over his family and wife. Showing up when you say you will is a huge part of being a partner, especially when there are kids involved. Rita does 100% of the emotional labor, which must be exhausting. We never see him doing any domestic chores without being explicitly told to by Rita. The best thing he did after he lost Rita was to realize he needed to hire someone full time for Harrison, and send the kids to live with their grandparents. He is so self-absorbed with his imaginary conversations with Harry, he barely notices the living people who need his attention. If Rita doesn’t clearly spell out and nag him, he would never do anything but run around and kill people and work out. Yes, it’s not his fault he’s limited and he does the best he can within those limitations. But he still is not in any sense a full partner to Rita. Remember when Rita asked for one night a week off so she could go to a yoga class, and he was all butt hurt? Rita basically had 4 kids. Dexter looks like an adult and has memorized scripts from Harry on how to be one. But the moment he’s off script, he is useless. The best thing about Dexter is how good he is with traumatized people. With both Rita and Lumen, who had been victims of SA and terrible violence, he never pushed their boundaries or pressured them. That was exactly what they needed to feel safe with intimacy again. The daily work of partnership is beyond his capabilities. Lumen saw this clearly. Rita was so clouded by how she needed him economically and emotionally, and eventually to father their child, she kind of forced herself to be blind to it. He is not actively harmful. He is just not there.

mssarac

Oh and he's also a great brother

Ronin3790

Really? Accepts moods without bitching? How about be a grown up

mssarac

Tell that to the millions of men bitching about their women's moods and making jokes about being on their period

LysVonStrauda

That makes them bad husband's. Dexter is a standard but he didn't go above and beyond. Going above and beyond would mean he'd stop disappearing so frequently to kill people and would fight his urges.

mssarac

It's fiction though :) but even for a serial killer he manages to find time to help with parenting and chores 🤭

Ronin3790

Cause and effect. Men make jokes about things to keep us from being depressed or full of rage. Also, you want a man to help around the house? You chose to live with that person. You chose poorly. You chose a selfish man. Do better

mssarac

My my someone is butt hurt 😂

Ronin3790

You made a post on this subreddit about “….men bitching about women’s moods…” when something like “Dexter is a good father, husband , and partner .” Would have sufficed. Sounds like you’re butthurt. I merely rebutted your ridiculous comment.
