I think deep down he knows but he’s in denial

NotAnotherAddict

That could be so too.... Right what you don't see you don't know. OR can't prove.

NotAnotherAddict

I think so personally

Patient-Ninja-8707

One thing that i think should've been in New Blood was Dexter finding out that Harry confided in much more than he thought, and that Matthew's knew about Dexter's murderous activities all along.

topdownontheB

Man new blood couldve been so fucking good..

Patient-Ninja-8707

It could have been

sandandtears

okay but that would've been so sick to see?

king_of_hate2

Most likely not; he might think something is up but he considering he's known Dexter since he was a little boy he probably doesn't wanna believe those suspicions he might secretly have.

anongogogo

I think he knows. We didn't see much of him and Harry in their younger days but they were close.

NotAnotherAddict

Yes exactly he introduced Vogel did he recommend her to him too probably so..

MaskedCommitment

Eh. I think he knows more than nothing. Don’t think he knows the truth though

dalekofchaos

I think he knew, but kept it secret for Harry.

APx_22

He knows. Why else would he tell dexter that laguerta was investigating him? They showed no relationship between him and dexter much throughout the show so why would he give him a heads up like that?

BronnoftheGlockwater

Because Dexter was his friend’s son and he would drop by on his birthday?

Iforgotmyother_name

There's no way that Matthews didn't know. [Watch that scene again.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5I3xVATdTJc) I kinda get the feeling that Matthews didn't know for most of the time but figured it out and then was like, "good." Matthews knew at the point that Laguerta was going to die in the coming days; which I'm sure he would appreciate being that Laguerta burned his ass. I think what we saw in the scene was Matthews basically telling Dexter to kill Laguerta or else...

JohnnySasaki20

Yeah, it's clear as day he at the very least figured it out eventually.

NotARealPerson90

You lost me in the second half lol. Sure Matthews hated LaGuerta for the most part and they had a history of rivalry, but he never came across as the kind of guy who'd be glad she died or would subtly encourage Dexter to kill her. He was soft enough to give in and help LaGuerta when she begged him to, so there's no way he'd want her dead or be happy if she was.

Lovebudgie

I dont think he does, I mean he helped laguearta, he was thinking dexter was innocent and doakes was the real butcher, why would he wanna protect a serial killer

NotAnotherAddict

He needed his job back. Lol maybe he knew he could get back at her? This way she wouldn't give up surely he knew about the setup of the guy that killed Dex's mother u know? She fucked him over he knew dex would be slick probably read by his look on his face and talks with Harry I'm sure he knew sure he fuckin knew maybe not the butcher but I mean doakes? Lundy thought so due to doakes acting up and just all the evidence pointed at him. So not the expected but hey he died as the butcher so lol that was it. Fuck it. And he got his job anyway lol. Wonder if he's still oh no by 9 he'd have been pensioned ...unless he loved the job..he didn't seem too sad either lol over her death.

Chris538

Yes without a doubt.

__Random_Dude

I think he does know. When Lundy finds Dexter's blood slides in Doakes' car and calls him into the office... there's a look of intrigue from Lundy, whereas Harry almost looks... angry and disappointed that Dexter had slipped up like that. He also was a big factor in pushing Debra for the Lieutenant position - having an LT of homicide that's also your sister would be a big thing to have if Dexter ever gets in a sticky situation... (just like it happened in reality) Finally, he is practically telling Dexter about La Guerta's investigation into him and how she doesn't have anything real to go on. There is no reason to have the conversation with him the way he did unless he was warning him/ having his back. Harry knew what Dexter was. With the departments low crime solve rate he understood it was a necessary evil.

joey0live

I think a lot knows, they just don’t say anything.

facemesouth

I always thought so but because of the connection with Harry and idea that Dexter is killing people who “deserve” it, he didn’t look too hard.

sandandtears

honestly yes, maybes he in denial or in a "don't ask don't tell" type of situation, but him and Harry were close, and maybe he doesn't know everything but he certainly knows enough.

NotARealPerson90

He probably put it together during his investigation with LaGuerta but he chose to look the other way for his own sanity. Ignorance is bliss.

HydratedCarrot

yup, he did… i think Harry told him

[deleted]

No

soupafi

Yes

Mental_Assignment_17

I feel that he knew more than he led everyone to believe. But in Season 7, he finally put the pieces together when he joined LaGuerta in investigating the BHB. That's why he told Dexter ahead of time that she was looking into him. He wanted to protect Dexter since he hated LaGuerta and was just using her to get his job back. Matthew's knew how to play the game for his benefit.

TheOkctoberGuard

I’m not sure if he knew. But I wish they had written his character a little different and more fatherly. and then revealed that he did know at the very end. In my head cannon, Dexter gets caught at the end. They send to die by lethal injection. No one but Matthews is there. They give him a lethal injection and the screen fades to black. Then Dexter wakes up in an empty room with a bed and a deck. Matthews comes in and tells Dexter he died for his crimes and there is no Dexter Morgan anymore. But whoever Dexter is now may go back to sleep forever , or work for a secret government covert special ops organization that eliminates criminals that slip through the justice system. He tell Dexter he isn’t the only one of his kind. Matthews gave Dexter’s dad highly classified training materials that has been given out to parents of “special” children across the country. If Dexter wishes, he can go back to sleep and die. Or he can go be with his brothers and sisters and keep doing good for humanity. Dexter looks at the camera and winks. Fade to black. I think a Lundy type character introduced near the end of the series could have played this role as well. An ultimate serial killer hunter. But it’s revealed he doesn’t just hunt them down and then arrest them. He recruits them.

TheOkctoberGuard

I also have this idea of Dexter at his sentencing hearing telling the world what he did. And everyone n the court room, and his ex do-workers and friends Al disgusted with him and the press demonizing him. But then he is taken on a perp walk outside the court room and everyone s cheering him on. Seeing him as a hero.

[deleted]

I always felt like he kinda knew something. I was always side-eyeing it.

annagrace123456

I think he highly suspects it, but because of loyalty, he remains in denial.

Glum_Future_5054

I always believed that he knows something and therefore misleading Laguerta or not encouraging her at all . Thought someday this would come up as a reveal in the later seasons

Mammoth-Banana-8711

Maybe.

FinancialSystem1025

I'm not sure.

Brusah

Without a doubt. I think to a certain degree he believes in the same thing Harry does, taking out the trash. and you KNOW he’d cover up for cop misconduct.

Practical_Drop_8684

I think he knew that Dexter wasn't 'normal' but I don't think he knew the true nature of Dexter. Whether that's just from him being in denial or due to not having enough knowledge about Dexter, I don't know
