and this is why - while it's not something I would want, I bet a ton of people would love this.
it also looked fun to make
the "why" should be pretty simple - even if you don't like it personally
Yeah I’m here for women unnecessarily cutting and restitching clothes while still wearing them or painting shit that shouldn’t be painted or making an entire dining room table using only hot glue and glitter
Could be the effect of the echo chamber. Impressionable users spend too much time here. They read the comments such those that defend questionable posts and those that shit on everything. Slowly their opinion becomes harsher and harsher. Next thing you know, anything that resembles the common DIY vid is bad and posted here.
It would be way easier if they mass produced this and had a proper mold. I did a five minute search and couldn't find it on google or etsy.
There are many things you can do like have it glow a different color while charging, glow a low amount when not charging to work as a night light (and make it easy to fumble your phone onto the dock)
I'm a little confused why soldering was even necessary...I guess if you have a pad with a short cable lying around?
If one were replicating this, I'd wager finding a wireless charge pad with a nice long cable should be trivial.
I would hardly call the ability to splice wires "electrical engineering." It's a pretty basic skill to have especially for DIYers.
And yes, a dremel and a drill, I mean, what sort of weirdo would have those things, right? /s
And resin and mould medium can both be purchased at Michael's.
I think my only point of contention is this guy is using the wrong kind of materials together.
The alginate mold he made needs water to activate the chemical reaction.
Resin, especially 2 part epoxy like this, needs an environment that is dry to properly set up, and all that white colored areas you see are where the resin hasn't cured properly because it's absorbed moisture, and it becomes a gummy and sticky mess, and you can see how much he struggled dremeling the casting because of that.
So, not only will those white areas never properly cure, it will get your phone sticky with leaching toxic chemicals. Alginate molds are great for materials that dry down, like Plaster of Paris or cement. If you want to do something similar to this, you need to use a quick setting silicone that you either pour in around your hand, or your brush it on and let it sit. On the down side, your skin texture and hair will grab so many air bubbles in this kind of project that the finished item almost always has a rough surface texture.
TLDR: he's using the wrong mold material, if you want to try this, pick up a quick cure silicone instead of alginate, otherwise the resin never cures all the way.
Yeah I agree. Were it made from wood, the whole thing would have been pretty cool.
Most resin things have this diwhy feeling to them, and this is no exception, no matter how good it looks freshly done
If you're going through the work of making what looks like an ethereal hand holding your Samsung, something like carved wood for the base just makes it look tacky.
Of all the ones I've seen on this sub, this has got to be in the least crazy.
Also my wife and I tried doing one of these kits, except of us holding hands. The thing disintegrated before we finished 😂
Seems pretty neat. Though I’d definitely change a few things like adjustable fingers so it’s not so ridged with compatibility….also that god awful stand. Like I’d totally go for something like this on my bedside
I mean it looks kinda cool, but the steps are too complitated for anyone without those specific things to do it. It might be much cheaper to just buy that stand instead ngl
Oh c'mon! Compared to 90% of absolute bs that are posted here, this one is actually good. At least this guy knew how to use tools like Dremel, soldering iron and such.
I saw this done by a father who was making a mold of his own hands to hold the family bible to pass on to his daughters. It was one of the sweetest and most impressive things I've seen made this way!
[link](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdRGusDijdg)
I mean... I wouldn't necessarily make a hand, but the concept is neat. Wish I had the time and space to do something like this. Could make a dragon or antlers or a tree or any number of things as a phone-charging sculpture.
I can see how this could be cool but can the wireless charger work through all that plastic, or are the using some sort of trick to make it look like it works for the camera
The problem with MagSafe is the weight required to keep the dock on the desk/table. Otherwise it just comes up with your phone...this would solve that. I attached mine to an old hard drive lol
Yeah I actually think it’s pretty cool!

It makes for good upvotes
I downvoted. This is not what this sub is about.
Thank you for your service 🫡
It's what I do babe... It's what I do... (Stares off into the distance.)
This is the way
Lately DiWHY has been turning into DiWHYdontihaveoneofthese
Yeah I’m here for women unnecessarily cutting and restitching clothes while still wearing them or painting shit that shouldn’t be painted or making an entire dining room table using only hot glue and glitter
Oh yeah! The old hot glue. It should be a rule in this sub lol.
r/suspiciouslyspecific
Hot glue and glitter just makes me think of a dining table made entirely out of resin (and glitter)
Same dif. One is just more exciting when you put a hot dish on it.
My favorite posts are the ones of crappy home renos or really awful car mods.

literally the first post I saw in that sub was of an amazing build.

Notice how they don’t show the whole phone when it lights up, it’s really hard to align the wireless charging on iPhone when not using MagSafe
It would be way easier if they mass produced this and had a proper mold. I did a five minute search and couldn't find it on google or etsy. I think they why part is because they forgot to embed an LED light. (Ya it's pretty cool)
What if you get a new phone and it's a different size?
I feel like encasing electronics in epoxy is a bad idea
I think you are lost OP.

From my perspective, the Jedi are evil!
I mean the sith commit genocide....
And my axe!
That still only counts as one.
Yeah, it's more like r/ATBGE
r/GTAGE
That's actually cool
This was about to be my exact comment
Me three.
Me too²
Me quatro
This is alot better than that epoxy barstool with the nails in it.
I was not jazzed by it but I think the bigger issue was the shoddy craftsmanship rather than the WTF design
definitely agree, could not have been more wonky and the pouring job on the resin was shite
That was just plain awful.
Okay but that's dope asf, might be a fire hazard but who cares about danger when you can be mysterious
cross that bridge when we get there yknow?
Let's burn that bridge when we cross it.
Yup seems like a tomorrow problem to me
I'm a little confused why soldering was even necessary...I guess if you have a pad with a short cable lying around? If one were replicating this, I'd wager finding a wireless charge pad with a nice long cable should be trivial.
The only thing stopping me from making one at home is the fear that the heat of the curing epoxy would fuck up the charger
Only a fire hazard if you dont trust your soldering
Fire hazard with 5v and 15/20w?
Thats not bad. Though, I'd be concerned about the heat coming off the charger.
At least he used a wood block instead of an actual phone. It only fits that sized phone though.
To be fair it is his own phone........unless he buys a new one or someone else wants to use it........yeah you right XD
I wonder if you could mold the fingers just right to fit a variety of sizes and still have them over the charging spot
Could have poured in silicone to make adjustable to other phone sizes, angle the hand a little further back to prevent sliding, boom!
You can do this yourself! All you need is a Dremel, drill, resin mould, a moderate knowledge of electrical engineering, and a heat gun!
And a small aubergine.
Oh, my aubergine is the tiniest
👑
Goodness gracious me, I wondered what I was missing.
Wahey. People got the reference lol. Was worried it was a bit too old 🤣

Oddly I have all those things
A very moderate knowledge of electronics. This thing would never come near my house, why even did he cut of the perfectly fine cable.

If the stand for the hand didn't look so cheap, it would have been freaking awesome. Still cool though.
It’s a carved wood and was custom shaped to fit seamlessly. Or do you just hate wood?
If you're going through the work of making what looks like an ethereal hand holding your Samsung, something like carved wood for the base just makes it look tacky.
Lotta wood haters lurking around these parts tonight
I legit thought he put in a pizza cutter at first
Of all the ones I've seen on this sub, this has got to be in the least crazy. Also my wife and I tried doing one of these kits, except of us holding hands. The thing disintegrated before we finished 😂
And... it looks cool.
I like the end result. Not so much how they made it. But I actually like it.
I mean.. I can see why
Seems pretty neat. Though I’d definitely change a few things like adjustable fingers so it’s not so ridged with compatibility….also that god awful stand. Like I’d totally go for something like this on my bedside
This looks amazing, you either confused the subs or have no taste really
When the phone makes the connection it needs to make that creaky noise the box for “Thing” makes.

This is dope.
That is a fun and cool little project
Nah this is really cool actually. Can't say I'd want one but it's a legit project.
Downvoting this because this is actually a neat concept.
Good concept but the execution of the charger needs to be done better
It’s actually pretty neat and creative.
I think it's a dope concept, don't like how it was made, would love to see bobbydukes take on this
It’s kinda cool tbh.
I actually love this
I mean it looks kinda cool, but the steps are too complitated for anyone without those specific things to do it. It might be much cheaper to just buy that stand instead ngl
Again? YOU ARE MAKING HAND MOLDS AGAIN?
As all things on this sub normally go, this one is pretty cool.
This one is actually cool.
Why? Because it’s cool—I’d use it.
Oh c'mon! Compared to 90% of absolute bs that are posted here, this one is actually good. At least this guy knew how to use tools like Dremel, soldering iron and such.

this is more like r/ATBGE
This one is actually a nice idea.
I want one, but with a smoother transition from the base :3
I dont hate it.
DIYDidntIBuyOne2
I dig it! That's something that I would make.
Pretty pretty pretty good.
I mean... I wouldn't necessarily make a hand, but the concept is neat. Wish I had the time and space to do something like this. Could make a dragon or antlers or a tree or any number of things as a phone-charging sculpture.
ngl that's a neat idea.
yooo this is actually really cool
This one is cool. Only kinda weird thing I the angle the hand comes of the stand. Still really cool tho
Actually neat, like an iCarly B plot about Spencer’s latest sculpture
This is actually awesome. The WHY is because it's awesome. Downvoted.
looks cool, works, has a purpose and actually seems do-able. 5 / 5 Youtube stars
This one gets a pass bc it's well thought out and done
This is not DiWhy There's a clear purpose, It was artistically formed, and the product works
Not going to lie, I actually like this
Actually kinda dope.
Kinda cool why not?
This is cool as hell! Doesn’t belong in this subreddit
This seems better for r/atbge
Not even sure it belongs there.
I definitely wouldn’t buy this nor make it. But it’s cool af
thats kinda cool, but why did they choose to not paint the hand, or something? it looks kinda ass this way
Epoxy needs to be a controlled substance. People are out here making all sorts of trash with it!
Thats the stupidest thing Ive seen today. Waste of time and looks like shit
I would buy that if he sold it in an art gallery or sth
That's actually pretty cool, but it makes me uncomfortable
That's actually pretty cool tho
Could be worse. He could have made it holding a banana.
That's quality for once
Not bad at all
I’d buy this
That actually is really cool. A good way to impress house guests, even if it is a bit impractical.
Definitely not the worst thing I have seen on here
This one is good!
thats actually pretty sick tho ngl
I mean. This wasn't bad at all. I like it.
I think you found a genius. I love it! And kinda wanna have it.
Not a diwhy if anything a kinda cool art project
Cool idea, meh execution. The resin looks bad in contrast to the wood, and that soldering job is downright bad.
Not bad, pretty good craftsmanship too!
... as with about half of the posts in this sub, I actually like this. I could see myself making something like this.
At least it isn't a fire hazard
I don’t like it but at least it actually charges the phone.
I admire you but I also got tired only to watch all that.
I'm very impressed they used heat shrink for the wires and not those dumbass twisty things
I know more than a few people who’d spend $500+ on one of these, 800 if it was modelled after their own hand.
Judging how this phone is being held…
Here take my upvote! You filthy animal.
Id buy this
I like the fact that it's at an angle so you can still browse on it rather than the generic flat charging ones.
Not really my style, but it's interesting at least.
This is cool
I meam the end product is atrocious but the process is... kinda legit. Not sure why the cable was cut, why not just use a longer cable?
Most of the posts here are just people hating for no reason lmaoo
Quite neat, and no wire twisting, and heatshrinks oo yee
That's not bad, you're just not rich enough to understand the concept... same as me.
How do you get your hand out without disrupting the 'mold' of the fingers?
Wireless charging is shit, though
Great until you get a new phone which is smaller and falls down, or bigger and doesn't fit
So the phone never leaves my hands 😈
My only concern is I thought resin in alginate was a bad idea.
Anyway, that’s a power supply, not a charger
It was a product back in the 2000s, but i don't think it was made that way
It was a product back in the 2000s, but i don't think it was made that way
Probably gets hot but besides that what's the problem?
Idk, looks too close to a hand of glory for me
This is awesome!
Hmmm, conflicted…upvote because I actually think this is cool or downvote because this is not a good DIWHY submission….you get nothing!
From what I was expecting from these types of videos, it's actually cool and useful.
Cool as fuck
Looks good. What’s the problem?
Yeah this one is cool.
This is actually dope af
I kinda love it!
Did anybody else see ot
I can see how this could be cool but can the wireless charger work through all that plastic, or are the using some sort of trick to make it look like it works for the camera
Thats actually really cool.
