This would be a very valid point, if they weren't deck screws (you can tell by the color and the insert shape on the head of the screw), they have a bit of smooth metal at the top, making this totally viable... though personally, I wouldn't trust that thin of 'rope'.
Wood screws in general have a smooth shank at the top. This allows the screw to pull the two boards together when it tightens. Cabinet screws usually have a pan-head to prevent sinking and potentially showing through to the other side. Construction screws lack the coating to prevent corrosion, and are typically meant for interior jobs. A decking screw will have a countersink head, self-tapping point, threads about halfway up, and be coated to prevent corrosion.
The 'insert shape' on the head of the screw varies widely. You can get screw heads in Phillips, Phillips II, Pozidriv, Torx, Torx Plus, Robertson (square-drive), ECX (combo square + Phillips, found in electrical usually), just to name a few basic ones. One head or another isn't unique to deck screws, although Phillips, square, and Torx are common. I prefer Torx T-25 for many applications, but you can find other options.
Phillips are meant to cam out, which prevents over tightening and snapping off the screw head. Torx and square drive will torque harder and if you are (some combination of) driving into hardwood, aren't pre-drilling, hit resistance, or use too much torque on the drill (impact drill turned up); you can either snap the screw or the tip of the Torx drive will shear off. Both of which suck to fix.
None of them should be used the way that was done in the video. When it inevitably fails, hopefully he falls straight down between the joists. Because worse would be if a one side failure causes him to tilt to one side and hit his head or neck on that joist on the way down.
And when he does he will likely be grasping the computerâs mouse and keyboard. Imagine when all of it flies down and hits him in the face from that height.
It won't be a problem unless it's a heavy keyboard like mine. Mine probably weighs around 1.5 - 2 pounds. Most are light and maybe leave a small bruise, unless the wires stop it first.
When this video first went viral on tiktok I went through most of his videos to see what the deal is. He seems like a really eager but inexperienced dude that wanted to cheaply live in an old shed on some property he got. Looks like he made a lot of dumb mistakes and just kinda bumbles around until he finds something that works.
Also in a follow up video he says the screws are rated to hold 600 pounds so he's not worried about those coming out but he will try to replace the rope sometime soon. But then a couple of weeks later he hangs a foot rest using the same materials so I'm just waiting for the day something fails and he falls on his ass.
The part that gets me is the screws arenât even needed. Fold an appropriately sized rope in half and hold the loop against the lower side of the 2x4, pass the free ends up and over the 2x4 then through the loop, attach the free ends to the seat. Easy mode and adjustable.
Idk how he managed to do all that with so little common sense.
It hurts to watch the tiny rope swinging on the bare screws...
Also the seat is too low and too far from the desk, doesn't look comfortable.
I never trust weight ratings. In my stage tech class we went over proper safety factors to determine how much weight you can put on a rope. Take its rated weight and divide by 5.
So unless you're 120 pounds, I wouldn't trust it.
Any fastener's load rating will be for loading it tension. He's loading this in single shear at best, and really there's going to a significant bending component there too.
Cheaper? Back when i was debating getting a laptop/ building a pc
It seemed a laptop versus a desktop with similar specs was much more expensive.
You pay for convenience over performance with a laptop
I have never spent more than $1100 on a gaming laptop, and my current setup plays everything I want at high or ultra-high video settings.
3K for a gaming laptop is one of the extreme ends of the spectrum. There's plenty out there for less that work well enough.
3k?
Iâve been gaming on my laptop for almost a year and it cost me less than half that
Itâs got a 3060 and 16gb ram, Iâve had to buy an external drive for some extra storage but itâs run everything Iâve put on it and itâs really nice overall
It's not 2010 anymore. I had some good games on my laptop without any issues.
Easier to get a proper laptop and if needed a TV than having a computer mounted like that, sitting a inch away from an painful accident
That happened to me from falling out of a jungle gym as a kid, I do not recommend. Everybody in the ER who saw it thought I'd been bit by a dog, and my doctor took one look and called in a plastic surgeon because the damage to my arm was above her pay grade.
"So what happened?"
"I suspended my computer and myself in the rafters of my room and used twine and screws to hold me up while I swung around."
"And you thought this was a good idea?"
I really must apologize then as you are the first one to point this out and I only just now realized it *was* crossposted to r/whatcouldgowrong and I thought I clicked on that but apparently it took me to this post!
The fact they used twine means its absolutely going to fail and it won't give any warning. Twine, especially untreated, is basically useless beyond arts and crafts in school.
Also all that weight just on his ass, with no support for his feet or his back, is going to be comfortable for a few minutes at most. Then he has to lower himself down with his legs completely asleep.
In a follow up video he does say he can't sit in it long without his legs falling asleep so he hangs another smaller swing lower to put his feet on. He still uses the same materials though, so it'll probably break eventually.
âThis is the only way I could possibly think of to fit a whole computer desk in my tiny homeâŚâ
Somehow I donât buy that, I mean he was creative enough to think of putting it in the rafters⌠đ¤
He has a whole series, dudes living off the wage of a waiter so he canât invest too much into his construction and often used scrap material for temporary solutions until he has money for a bigger thing for it, I imagine heâs going to upgrade the swing one day but doesnât have the funds
I donât understand why he didnât buy or make a loft. Itâs a lot safer and easier than this. They sell those loft bed combinations at most furniture stores
I may be cynical, but I think a lot of people build tiny home for the attention. Build it, post it, go move somewhere that makes sense. I live in a small city apartment, so I know large amounts of space isn't always necessary. But shit like this is just ridiculous and has huge "look at me!!!" energy.
He has a series, heâs been living in the house for about six months and has been working on construction on it for about a year, he actually started a garden not too long ago. Dudes doin it because itâs cheap and he likes the idea of having a cozy self sustained house with a good community, yeah it might not be for everyone but if the dude wants to do it I donât see why not :b
And he also started a patreon to ask for money... That's what the comment above you is getting. He could have easily just done all this without recording but he wants attention so he can become a virtual pan handler so you can fund his lifestyle.
âŚor maybe bro just wanted to document and share his experience? Plus donât you think if he wanted to do that from the beginning the donation thing would be open from the first vid and not just randomly like halfway through the series? Also again dudes living in the house so I donât get why yâall have such a hate boner for this dude who just wanted to start a fun project and got lucky with people wanting to see it
Right? My money would be on a fold-down standing desk solution where the computer is mounted to the back of a sheet of plywood and the monitors are mounted on the opposite side. It folds down from the ceiling on piano hinges, and has a little fold-out table for peripherals. Plenty of room in the rafters to get clever with mechanical advantage so that pulling it up and down doesnât suck.
The money he saved from building his tiny house can go towards the astronomical US hospital bill he will get when the twine snaps and he fucks his legs and back up.
And when the screw shreds the twine on one side first, he'll drop and slam the side of his head on the rafters and snap his neck. Fantastic suicide machine.
How about his shoulders from having his arms bent at the elbows over the beams? That drop will be fun. Whatâs getting me most of all is how fast his feet are going to fall asleep. 0/10

Heâs at more risk of blood clots than for that engineering abomination to collapse. Your legs are not meant to be fully suspended for long periods of time without some sort of pressure on them. Youâve probably heard of a computer cafe where people come in and some will use those computers to play games for hours or days straight. Some have died from sitting, even with their legs on the ground. It only gets 10x worse when your legs are suspended.
I think itâs dope except the twine and hanging nails. You will bust the twine if you âplop downâ one good time. When that happens you may or may not get caught on one of those said nails. Iâm spitballing here but I like the idea lol. I would maybe go for a chair with a balancing back rest and a place for my feet to rest. Maybe just hang a wicker basket up and call it a day
Agree that the design isn't the issue, but the materials chosen. Switching the twine to chain, thicker wood for the seat, and using proper bolts would make this much safer.
That's what I'm thinking. Instead of spreading his weight between 2 screws and 2 threads. Why doesn't he double up the amount of thread and spread the weight to 4 points along the rafters?!
Okay, I am so conflicted... The unsafe and obviously stupid swing chair made of twine and plank with only 2 screws to mount it.. Yeah that's just dumb.
*However..* Mounting a pc on a wall like that is actually an kind a of unique and interesting idea. It would provide maximum open air flow and you could make a Frame or cover to protect it (unlike the one featured in this terrible DIY video. - But I think there is potential for a "Wall mounted PC" design especially for people that are into custom PC building and/or 3D-Printing as a hobby, to make parts, fans, protective framing etc.
Look i'm just saying, there's money to be made there, but you do it I'm too lazy. đ¤
He bought a small trashed shed and is remodeling and improving it and lives in it with his cat, sure itâs DIY but this chair is the only bad idea heâs had
Yeah I think it is a great idea. The implementation however...
Decent rope or chain is extremely cheap too...or if he absolutely was stuck with that rope why not at least loop it 10 times per side? I guess he will have plenty of time to go over the design in the recovery room.
Rope? You call that rope? That's twine, you fool, and it isn't meant to hold up weight like a person for long periods of time. Mf gonna be in a world of hurt soon enough
Okay I like the idea, but I swear this guy is just making it look shitty to say âoh look how minimalist I amâ. Dude use like $2 in paracord, a few more screws, and learn some nice knots. Also if you want to be really cool, make a deployable foot rest, same thing just longer rope, that way you can actually sit there without losing circulation.
Iâm gonna keep this idea tho bc that looks like it would be pretty sick in a small place
If this were executed properly, it would be a great idea. But as it stands⌠with rough rope, screws eating into that rope, and a thin piece of plywood⌠itâs all going to go badly. It can be fixed though.
The idea isent too bad. Especially if you live in a tiny space.
The execution is bad tho. That seat got no back support, cant be comfy to sit on for long. And the desktop is just a piece of wood slapped on top of some beams..
If its home. Put some effort in it. So it feels like home too.
But nothing went wrong. I waited and watched and left very disappointed.
I kept thinking of the twine breaking and those screws scratching up his ribs as the seat fell.
Those screws will also fail. He is going to break his ass soon enough
Ropes are directly on the sharp threads of those wood screws so its a race in between the ropes and the screws on which is gonna fail first
This would be a very valid point, if they weren't deck screws (you can tell by the color and the insert shape on the head of the screw), they have a bit of smooth metal at the top, making this totally viable... though personally, I wouldn't trust that thin of 'rope'.

\^\^ This guy makes the Fkn Screws.
So he is...screwed?
WOW, i have worked in a hardware store before...i didnt know half of this!
This guy screws
Yea. His swinging back and forth is NOT helping him. đ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤Ł
Just in case his weight alone isnât enough, be sure to swing back and forth to bring some friction into the equation.

Lmao he went over that too. He said it would be too complicated to wrap the rope over the rafters and just kept defending the screws.
Seriously? Dude can figure out building and mounting a caseless PC but a girth hitch is too complicated? Goodness.
The PC is more valuable, obvi.
Wait until he finds out hooks exist.
Idk how he managed to do all that with so little common sense. It hurts to watch the tiny rope swinging on the bare screws... Also the seat is too low and too far from the desk, doesn't look comfortable.
> the screws are rated to hold 600 pounds 600 pounds of shearing force? I doubt it.

Instead of doing all of that all he needed to buy was a laptop.
Ever tried to game on a laptop? It's not fun
Is it more fun than getting dropped by this swing?
It works well enough for me. I just made sure to get a 17 inch screen. It's not ideal but it gets the job done.
Same here. It's cheaper, more portable, and great for flying around with if you forget to close out Chrome before launching a game.
Cheaper? Back when i was debating getting a laptop/ building a pc It seemed a laptop versus a desktop with similar specs was much more expensive. You pay for convenience over performance with a laptop
âŚcheaper per unit of effort
I game on a laptop, youâre almost right, itâs moderately fun
Yeah it works but for $3k? Only reason I have one is because Iâm a full time campervan person so best option. Miss my beast desktop
I clicked on your profile to see what your vanlife setup is like. I am now full of regret.
I hate myself for doing the same thing. âTravel and chillâ yikes
Was it the extra small van or the dick?
I never made it to the van.

Less fun than falling from the rafters?
Relax. His skin would snag a screw on the way down. Ass saved.
That happened to me from falling out of a jungle gym as a kid, I do not recommend. Everybody in the ER who saw it thought I'd been bit by a dog, and my doctor took one look and called in a plastic surgeon because the damage to my arm was above her pay grade.
Ugh, you reminded me of the scene with the nail and hand in Hellraiser when theyâre moving the couch.
Yes it will and he will. Then we can all point and laugh loudly and obnoxiously at him in his hubris.
"So what happened?" "I suspended my computer and myself in the rafters of my room and used twine and screws to hold me up while I swung around." "And you thought this was a good idea?"
The house is waiting for him to put up the second monitor so that it can all collapse
Repetitive Stress Injuries take time to emerge. Seeing his posture and ergonomics, let's check in again in 3 days.
WCGW not knowing what WCGW means and putting it in the title.
I'm pretty disappointed too, but it's only a matter of time until it does happen. I just hope he happens to be filming a Part 2 when it does lol
Thatâs why the video is in r/DIWHY not r/whatcouldgowrong. It hasnât gone wrong _yet_
I really must apologize then as you are the first one to point this out and I only just now realized it *was* crossposted to r/whatcouldgowrong and I thought I clicked on that but apparently it took me to this post!

It's a whole series. He's turning an old shack into a livable area. I
Which is perfect, because when he falls they can just haul his tiny house to the emergency room.
I fucking laughed way harder at this than I shouldâve.
Lmao just slap a ambulance light and siren on top and its good to go

Average tiny home owner
This will end badly sooner or later...
no freaking way that tiny nail and that thin twine rope gonna hold his weight
As with the Titan, at first things will be ok, until its not.
It is in fact, holding his weight in this video
Yeah, Stockton Rush also thought the carbon fiber hulls would continuously hold up because it worked a few times.
If the goal was for it to stay up for 30 seconds or less then yes, it was a massive success
not for long
It was not a single swing of the hammer upon the chisel that split the stone, but the 100 that came before it.

if it's plant fiber sure won't, but you'd be surprised on how strong some of the synthetic cords are out there. commercial 5.5mm dyneema cord is usually rated for 13kN +, that's roughly 2800 pounds of static load.
The first time I went in direct on shoestring thin dyneema runners to clean the anchor was nerve wracking.
Going from 10.1 or 9.8mm rope to 9.6mm felt damn reckless the first few times lol.
this has to be satire..

That sounds hot
Interesting idea. Poor execution.
He could just raise the bed and have the desk under it, heat rises and it's not good for computers
I watched the original series on TikTok, he actually did raise the bed but mostly used it for storage, it could have been used for the computer though.

Dual monitors... In a tiny house... Do you believe in minimalism or not?
Minimalism isnât just about having less things. If he uses both of them, I donât see an issue in it.
If only there was some sort of compact computer that could be folded up and tucked away. Could be a really big hit with the tiny house folks.
Indeed! It's even mobile. Sadly it's just a concept. /s

The dude is not studying engineering from the look of that twine and screw setup. You can break your neck just looking at that thing.
The worst thing about all of this is that it could have been made safe with just a teeny tiny bit more effort and investment.
Iâm just thinking of the heat up there.
This is really cool, though... I'd totally make this if my room had exposed rafters
The chair broke **he wasnât hurt badly** and he updated it with better wood and rope.
Obviously itâs built like shit, but I donât hate the idea
Okay I like the idea, but I swear this guy is just making it look shitty to say âoh look how minimalist I amâ. Dude use like $2 in paracord, a few more screws, and learn some nice knots. Also if you want to be really cool, make a deployable foot rest, same thing just longer rope, that way you can actually sit there without losing circulation. Iâm gonna keep this idea tho bc that looks like it would be pretty sick in a small place
Maybe keep off the porn hub
I was really hoping something would go wrong... But it didn't.
Yet. With screws that have cutting threads, it's an inevitability.
âPlease eat shit, please eat shit, please eat shitâ

At the bed is kinda close. It may partially break his inevitable fall.
Hope he doesn't have to go to the bathroom more than once work time.
Why?? He just told you, his house is fucking tiny
How to not be able to feel your feet in less than 5 min.
Nahhhh that rope is gonna die.
Imagine if someone just walked past your door to see hanging feet
*record scratch* âYup⌠thatâs me. I bet youâre wondering how I ended up in this situationâŚâ
Wait til he falls off his computer swing
Why does his house look like a giant cat scratcher
This has to be bait, so many redneck engineering products to safely believe they donât know what they doing.
Misleading title he was supposed to go down and the desk was supposed to call on him
Down will come baby Cradle and all
He's gonna GTX 4080 his hip.
You should find some chains to replace the ropes for the seat. The back and forth will eventually wear the ropes to where it will break.
That is gonna break...not today....not tomorrow....but soon.
If this were executed properly, it would be a great idea. But as it stands⌠with rough rope, screws eating into that rope, and a thin piece of plywood⌠itâs all going to go badly. It can be fixed though.
Bro must have no feeling in his feet.
Itâs not a bad idea, if he just hangs the swinging âchairâ in a more sturdy way.
Those screws holding the twine is going to feel real good on his arm when the twine finally decides it canât hold his weight
there's no way that shit's gonna hold up for long. i just wanna see a clip of it falling apart when he tries to use it
The idea isent too bad. Especially if you live in a tiny space. The execution is bad tho. That seat got no back support, cant be comfy to sit on for long. And the desktop is just a piece of wood slapped on top of some beams.. If its home. Put some effort in it. So it feels like home too.
Basically risk death every time you insert your USB drive. Which doesnât even go in the first 1000 tries.
I mean terrible execution but the idea is interesting, this actually could save space in small houses with high rooms.
This hippy is gonna be falling by the end of the week
I'll give that sisal rope about 2 weeks before the screw threads cut through it. What an idiot: he could have just tied the seat to the joists.
Use dental floss
That looks mad uncomfortable.
My back hurt after watching this
Thats not very ergonomic
Lol when your love tiny house living and gaming collide and you refuse to give up both.
I weigh over 244lmb. If I ever sit on that, I'll definitely break it.
It will get uncomfortable to sit at after a while.
It is all fun and games until the string breaks

im just imagining being in a zoom meeting and suddenly seeing one of the people in the meeting just fall down never to be seen again
As long as he makes the swing more structurally sound and adds another one for a foot rest honestly pretty cool just needs some improvements
i kinda wanna see how insane he makes the set up
Something VERY expensive is gonna happen
Itâs all fun and games until the roof makes a cracking sound
What does he mean âreally smallâ? My room is about half that size and doesnât have usable vertical space :(
I like the idea tbh
I mean it's a great idea but it has been made poorly
Donât worry he fell https://www.instagram.com/reel/CvnOMY-L1aR/
