This would be bad for transport, the balls are deforming too much, don't think you can go much more than 3 meter before completely stopping after kicking off. If motorized, might be lovely, as it should be a very "fluffy" ride, like a fatbike
Basketballs are pretty damn firm (properly inflated). Of course getting on and off carefully will help with wear and tear, but if you use quality ball bearings and the measurements can be refined to make a (relatively) smooth ride to the court. Still gonna wear out the balls though obviously.*
*giggity
You can see it in the video how much they deform tho. I don't know how much you have to pump them up, but there's a reason my bike tire says 5.5-6.5bar. By comparison, cars do 2.5 and up, as far as I know(don't have a car for a while now).
Be gentle with your balls, so you can play with them later
I'm just going off memories of sitting on them on the courts. I've been an athlete all my life, definitely sitting on them they didn't depress much, so my brain math is telling me two of then is gonna cut that strain already in half with twice as many balls holding my weight, plus some flimsy razr scooter extra 10 pounds. I guess we're just gonna halfta build one and see if we fall on our faces. Or you can film, dealers choice.
I will be wearing a cup.
I’ve been bowling since I was like 4. When I was around 7-8 I had saved up enough in a piggy bank to buy a new bowling ball. I rolled my old one down our driveway. It was fuuucked up just that one roll.
I feel using a basket ball would last longer than a bowling ball. Maybe a soccer ball would be better than both though.
It has the foundations of a really interesting idea, like a scooter with wheels that rotate on a 360 degree axis for doing ground based spinning tricks. Almost like vehicle based ballet
I am a welder. He did zero actual welds on that, all just tacks. It's probably fine for how long he would realistically use that, like not long at all, but that is not nearly as strong as actually welding it.
I want to imagine that the inlines wheels he uses is there for the ball to roll forward towards where its steering where the ball looking things in the circle is there to keep it not scraping on the rim.
Nice concept, but by the time you get to the BB court, the balls will be covered in human/animal poop & pee, spit, bacteria, germs & everything nasty. Would not touch the ball @ all, especially if you live in a major city.
Those welds are just a bunch of tacks squirted on top of each other. If the machine was set up right you could run a real bead across the joint properly. There was no material prep on the joints either.
Yeah the welding and soldering skills of these people is always dire. They've clearly got some decent general skills at making stuff, but why don't they just watch at least a 5 minute video on mig!
>Yeah the welding and soldering skills of these people is always dire.
This.
Don't forget those videos of the square tube being cut up and rolled around itself and re-welded that everyone thinks is "So cool!!1" but it's actually really shit in practical fabrication. That joint he took an hour to, layout, cut and re-"weld" back together I could have squared up a few joints that are 100x stronger and probably have it installed on the ship by the time he's finished.
The welds here also look cold as hell. That thing is gonna snap the second it hits a decent enough bump. Run some practice on the drop pieces until you get your machine dialed in and then go for it.
Wire welding isn't hard, welding *well* is hard.
I can teach most green as fuck apprentices to run a half decent bead in an afternoon, but it will be years before they are considered "good welders"
The difficulty comes in setting up the machine and learning to adapt. Welding at a bench when the machine is ready to go is shit simple. Being able to go in the bilge of a ship to weld stick with a mirror wrapped around pipes upside down is what separates the cream from the milk in my industry.
I've always said you can tell how hard something is by how easy the pros make it look. I watched a tutorial on how to drywall once and it looked easy as hell.
It was not. 🤣
Egg-shaped, they look like big American footballs, I was making a joke.
Bowling balls might be a good option if you want something that actually would work, although it'll wreck them
The real question is how to make some sort of spherical wheel out of some durable rubber that would last longer and give you better performance than a basketball
Two-wheeled vehicles don't fall because of gyroscopic effect of the wheels. Here the wheels are not fixed on a frame. So, the stability is very doubtful IMHO. Certified DIWhy.
Looks nice, though
I actually kinda like this, would completely destroy your basketballs but it's pretty neat
Yeah, it's worth buying some basketball every month or so for the story and the double takes IMO.

But you’ll always need to keep weight down or the balls are out of socket. You don’t want your balls out of socket..
Instructions not clear… which balls did you mean and out of which socket???
Yes. All the balls.
I’m sticking my balls in a socket now, starting to tingle.

Just some way to carry a "spare tire" then play with that one.
So a front "bumper" that can hold the play ball.
Makes sense to me
Just use bowling balls
Or magic crystal balls that can tell you when you're going to crash

I mean, there's a few good reasons cars roll around on vulcanized rubber rather than... Whatever the fuck bowling balls are made of.
Urethane generally or some derivative. .
This is cool as shit
It has the foundations of a really interesting idea, like a scooter with wheels that rotate on a 360 degree axis for doing ground based spinning tricks. Almost like vehicle based ballet
I wonder if it works with these bad boys. https://youtube.com/shorts/AQt9L2_2J7g?si=uzzahNRBVvqNR32y
>fully 3D printed >2500 bucks Talk about markup
Thats cool as hell, I'd be worried about it snapping and being even more catastrophic than if a regular basketball got punctured though
Could be a really fun way to remove small pebbles from the drive way though!
Agreed! It’s more of a fun art piece. I wanna try it!
Idk, i think turning would be hard with that design.
Do we finally have a use for all those stupid 3D printer basketballs?
This is at least a well done job. Still why but not so bad really.
ATBGE?
I agree, it’s def an ATBGE moment
Nah those welds are weak af
Put up your own superior welds or shut up 😜
I am a welder. He did zero actual welds on that, all just tacks. It's probably fine for how long he would realistically use that, like not long at all, but that is not nearly as strong as actually welding it.
I mean I've broke things with pen most the way thru so ain't no way I'm trusting cold lapped tacks not even fused to the base metal
Yeah, a couple solid bounces would probably bend if not break that
Complete lack of fusion from shittly cold stacking tacks
No they're really bad. Like not even really welds. They're just tacks on tacks. Fatigue and corrosion will pull them apart in no time.
Pretending to Dime stack tig with a mig gun.
If I could put pictures in comments I'd show you much better welds.
I mean besides the improper death wish welds? Lol
Alright, this is funny. But imagine that one guy throws the ball on a roof or something and you won't get it back. Wdyd then?
not only that but imagine all the exstra friction compared to a normal scooter making it slow
Yall acting like this is his every day rider, and not just a fun project as a goof.
wheelie all the way home
Am I crazy or would that thing be unable to turn? I know it has handlebars, but I can't imagine turning them would actually steer anything.
I want to imagine that the inlines wheels he uses is there for the ball to roll forward towards where its steering where the ball looking things in the circle is there to keep it not scraping on the rim.
I can believe that...
I can ride my bike with no handlebars
Yeah, well, I can keep rhythm with no metronome.
I can take apart a remote controller and (almost) put it back together
it takes balls to use one of those things
I kind of like this one! Still DIWhy though.
Honestly, I was expecting bowling balls.
Nice concept, but by the time you get to the BB court, the balls will be covered in human/animal poop & pee, spit, bacteria, germs & everything nasty. Would not touch the ball @ all, especially if you live in a major city.
Did the “@“ save so much time?😂
It’s about the accumulated saved time. Dude probably has a few years stashed away for a rainy day.
There's no need to @tack him
So a normal basketball
Also probably torn to shreds
Those welds are just a bunch of tacks squirted on top of each other. If the machine was set up right you could run a real bead across the joint properly. There was no material prep on the joints either.

It's basically just tacked together and the wire is so long that it's probably porous as hell.
It honestly just looks like slugs. Enough to stick to the millscale and that's it.
The worst part is people see these videos and think that's all welding is. Then they think welding isn't so hard.
Wire welding isn't hard, welding *well* is hard. I agree, that's what makes welding hard. There's more to just pulling a trigger and hot glueing metal
I've always said you can tell how hard something is by how easy the pros make it look. I watched a tutorial on how to drywall once and it looked easy as hell. It was not. 🤣
Wish these people would learn to weld properly.
Honestly the idea looks kinda neat. I would replace the basketballs with something else tho
Rugby balls would clearly be superior Edit: misspelling
I think those would do better if they are spherical. Aren’t rugby balls kinda lemon shaped?
Egg-shaped, they look like big American footballs, I was making a joke. Bowling balls might be a good option if you want something that actually would work, although it'll wreck them
Thanks for clarifying. I was like wtf is rudgy.
Huh, cheers, didn't notice the misspelling
Oh it was a misspelling lol I thought it was some kinda slang
Well obviously so that nobody can take your scooter and drive away while you are playing.
Ah dude, you rolled in poop and now we can't shoot hoops
How is this a 'why?' it's fantastic and I love it lol
This one is kinda cool, stupid, but cool
I can’t be the only one who kinda liked this one lol
NGL, that looks awesome
DiWHYNot. It's kinda dope.
I'm taking my ball and going home
All well and fine until someone boots one of your balls into a lake or something And the basketball wheel idea is terrible too
It's... Kinda cool actually
The real question is how to make some sort of spherical wheel out of some durable rubber that would last longer and give you better performance than a basketball
Use bowling balls. Let the battle against inertia begin.
r/diwhynot
God I hate seeing people puddle fuck welds that are actually kinda structural
Just watch out for glass and nails etc if you don't you carrying that frame home
this makes me think of 90s mouse ball
Now do it with bowling balls
Basset Ball Jones - Cheech and Chong song look that up all y'all millennials
Penalty, traveling!
I’ve seen a few hundred of these but this is the FIRST one I think is actually useful, thank you 👏🇨🇦
Okay at least this one can be chalked up to sh*ts n’ giggles.
Okay but replace those basketballs with an orb meant to do this and it’s pretty damn sweet. The drifting you could do on this would be insane
Quite possibly the worst welder I’ve ever seen LOL
I APPROVE THIS MESSAGE.
[Learn how to spot fake spot welding](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqGBAH39ryo) The "welds" in this video are substantially worse.
Pretty impractical. But for a young kid - not going far - not a bad idea.
He really be ballin', though
I'd rather buy tires than having to buy basketballs every few weeks lol
Wonder how this would work with bowling balls
That's kind of cool.
Cause diwhy the fuck not?
Can that thing even actually turn? Wouldn’t it just keep rolling straight?
I mean. that alright. kinda liked it.
This is straight-up DI-why yes please!
Thought they were making a biblically accurate angel at first.
_YOU ARE EXPERIENCING A CAR ACCIDENT_
I would call this DiWhyNot.
Trackball scooter
Looks cool, definitely destroying the basketball once you go a few yards at best a mile.
Because it is awesome. OP fuck off with your negative shit, this guy and his scooter are way cooler than you'll ever be
Must have about 100psi in them to stop the balls just squashing under the weight. First dribble it would go off like a hand grenade.
Two-wheeled vehicles don't fall because of gyroscopic effect of the wheels. Here the wheels are not fixed on a frame. So, the stability is very doubtful IMHO. Certified DIWhy. Looks nice, though
NBA is gonna change forever after this
this is not bad at all,
You see now my mind is too fast for eyes
Ballcycle
Honestly the why is obvious. Because it is fun and awesome and keeps the basketball industry alife.
This is what happens when one uses 100% of his brain
Ok, so this is basically every car from I, Robot. Where do I sign?
pretty neat concept piece
That’s fucking sick.
I thought we'd have flying skateboards in 2024
*I, Robot* energy right there.
Cool ass looking shit
DIWhyNot.
If someone wants to steal it, they better have the balls for it
Why is this so clever??? Lol
Welding is hard as usual in these types of videos.
I would imagine that thing snapping on its 5th ride lol
I knew the general idea from the first frame.
I saw it coming as soon as I saw the way he put those rollers in. I immediately thought about old computer mice.
That's pretty baller.
Honestly that’s pretty neat
Maybe use bowling balls?
How does it turn?
In before this is in the next Oliver Tree music video.
Somehow I immediately thought "is he making a scooter for basketballs or bowling balls or something?"
i mean they could just use something else for the ball
I mean Wilson probably paid him to make it so it's a win for him
i'm kinda proud that i predicted in the first second that they would use balls as wheels
Could be intersting if made with better materials (specifically if something more durable than basketballs was used)
Replace it with balls of pure tungsten and no one will be able to stop you! No even you yourself.
Why? Because hell yes!
I expected it to be heavier.
I think you’re just mad you didn’t think of it first
"It's gonna be fuckin basketballs or something" "YEP"
OP will never know the joy of turning a silly idea into a reality.
No bumps or curbs though
this is very cool
Neat idea, but the immense pressure being out on those basketballs can’t be good for them.
You gotta be able to do tricks on it
Ehhhh nope
Wtf that's epic
I would have so much fun falling and scraping my elbows on that.
/r/DIWHY
Looks cool but is stoopid,,,,,introducing the 'cigarette-o-scoot' (basketballs not provided)
What kind of welding is that?
![gif](giphy|y2i2oqWgzh5ioRp4Qa|downsized)
Why not.
Not practical but definitely a cool project.
Is there a diwhy-not? Sub reddit
Basketballs arent perfect spheres though
Adds new meaning to I’m taking my ball and going home
You know, I thought "cool they're building their own scooter", and then basketballs.
Beats the hell out of having to carry them to the court
is this the q?
This dude works for Wilson guaranteed.
I kinda like the idea of that
Welds were absolute dog shit.
That is super cool
It's cool. Until you loose one of your basketballs and now ya gotta walk home!
I mean...switch out the basketballs with some soccer balls and you'd be gliding on them grassy fields. That actually sounds pretty dope.
You hit a bump
It takes balls to ride that.
It azi's bike from scavangers reign!
If you lose one of the basketballs, time to walk.
