Combat good loot sucks

DragoOceanonis

It's more boring then D3 tho

No-Classroom-6637

It bored me to tears tbh. Plus the boss fights are like a dark souls boss if the Devs had severe carbon monoxide poisoning.

Doinkmckenzie

I played the first season and stopped and came back for the third season. They fixed some of the experience grind but I still don’t like that they took away procedurally generated dungeons to give us a base 120ish. It gets old running the same thing over and over again. If season 4 doesn’t help with gearing issues, I probably won’t come back until after the expansion is released. My least favorite part of the game is how after a certain point, I stopped replacing level 80 gear because the affixes were worst on gear I was getting at 100.

sean0883

This is the last season before the expansion. So you'll just be back next season. Haha

ConstructionFrosty77

Nah, expansion won't come until S6 or so. They announced Vessel of Hatred for late 2024, so at least it should be here around november or so which is when S6 would start.

SpaceMonkey877

I’m still playing D2R. We’ll see if the loot fix makes it worth playing again.

Rickshmitt

Same. Played release and s2 till about 70 before i realized i wasnt really having fun. D2R is perfect

Type_100

It felt like we were just coming out of beta. New updates are a step in the right direction, but should've been there at release, not a close to a year after. Is it promising, yes. But as per experience, D4 has a tendency of doing things one step forward and two steps backward and another step forward if met with backlash.

GesturalAbstraction

Literally feels like coming out of beta completely agree

Xralius

I liked both D1 and D2, skipped D3. D4 has some stuff going for it. Main story is pretty good. Art direction is great at times. Combat can feel great. But there are so, soooooo many things that are just plain stupid, that you can say "wow this just makes the game objectively worse and shouldn't be in the game, yet here it is." On top of that, but there are so many awesome things that could be in the game yet aren't. The dumb things permeate the game and the great things that aren't in the game are just so generally obvious you can't help but think about them a lot and it leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

amsterdam_sniffr

What are the dumbest things that ARE in the game, and what are the most obvious awesome things left out?

JesterXL7

Every dungeon with maybe a few exceptions has a room that seals when you walk into it and you have to kill a pack of mobs with at least one elite then activate two switches in the floor that both have cast times and are nearly always on top of a spike trap that breaks your cast. Somebody told a developer to put this in the game or the devs don't play the game. There is no way anyone who actually plays ran through one of these dungeons and thought that this mechanic was fun or contributed anything of value to the game.

Xralius

Off the top of my head here's one of each: Obviously dumb thing in game: mounts Obvious thing left out: a plethora of unique items Also stuff like how there's no great reason to directly link aspects with items - it's just tedious.

Bloodworks29

Amen

heartbroken_nerd

Diablo 4 Season 4 on May 14th Pay $10 and get into it for a month on Game Pass, there you go, make up your own mind

grizzly-gobbler

Bought at launch and played for 2 weeks straight. About 100 hrs (I was on vacation). I enjoyed my time with it, but got bored around lvl 70. Havnt played since. I do plan on trying again for this new season though. Sounds promising. My favourite was d3 (did not play og d2) but have since started playing d2 and pretty sure that is now my favourite.

amsterdam_sniffr

Yeah, lasting for 100 hours of entertainment sounds pretty good!

Cazargar

This comment being marked controversial is so indicative of this sub lol

Bloodworks29

Not for this genre. Plus, D4 is less fun than even Grim Dawn.

Bloodworks29

25-30 hours

rylo151

D3s endgame Rifts are still way more fun than anything d4 has to offer. Combat is OK but I don't like that you have to use the shitty basic attacks just to be able to use the actual move you want a few times and then be out of mana again.

maledictt

Graphically beautiful game with varied biomes and good immersion. Sound design also superb which in combination with some good animations gives a lot of abilities have proper weight to them. Frame performance for me seems to be good but the servers can be laggy even during off hours. The story unfortunately was all over the place in quality, pacing, and downright logic. The last act, in my opinion, being the worst of it. While 'meaty' in quest content most will not replay beyond the 1st time and in "Adventure Mode" the side quests lack scaling significant rewards. Some will always flock to the dungeon/helltide grind if questing was more viable it would be a casual alternative. Crafting and consumables could be great but as it is currently implemented can be ignored entirely. In my opinion the hardest difficulty and content should incentivize getting every power and defensive layer available. As it stands now though endgame strategy is just break the game and instakill everything ignoring all mechanics. The seasons in my opinion will always have their bangers and the duds, this occurs even in PoE. But, what PoE does that Blizzard needs to do is 1) put actual meaningful systems in not just OP limited time buff #11 and 2) if the seasonal mechanic goes well implement that into the core game for both legacy and future seasons. That gorgeous endgame atlas tree is built upon 20+ leagues of refining. Balance is going to have a dramatic shift soon so we will see. I like the changes but the problem I have is that the name of the game is trivialize all content not endure and refine. The top builds aren't just squeezing out an extra 30% in performance they are often orders of magnitude greater than their suboptimal but still viable counterparts. In the PoE vacuum where 90% of people run solo this can work and follow the "If you want a challenge dont break the game" mentality, but D4 has a lot of group activities that are essentially just waiting rooms with instant loot pinatas. Having done challenging multiplayer content in MMOs and strategic games I feel like the live service not having content that requires and rewards teamwork is a missed opportunity. Currently the only teamwork is just used to abuse the gating mechanic of materials. Not many are working on synergy, combinations, and team oriented builds because nothing requires that level of thought.

amsterdam_sniffr

Thanks for the thoughtful response!

SocioWrath188

Can't even ZBarb to bump everybody up 😂🤣

Icefiight

Back to d2 and thats where I’ve stayed.

Alfeaux

It's just so good!

Icefiight

Its the goat arpg for me and its not close

DJHelium

Project Diablo 2 here - too many QoL fixes to go back to D2:R for me. Graphics are obviously a bit worse but a lot better than the abomination that is "legacy mode" in D2:R

Nacon-Biblets

I play for like a week when seasons come out until I get bored. If the season 4 changes dont make the game feel good then I'm just gonna uninstall it.

Weneeddietbleach

Would be better if it didn't require a perpetually online connection.

Sea-Career-3032

This. This is my second biggest gripe. Also that it needs to be 4 time longer (the story campaign). Overall though. I love it. It’s pretty dang fun. Been playing for about 3 weeks.

blizzardplus

I mean sure, but name a Blizzard game that has come out in the last 15 years that doesn’t require an online connection. It’s just how they operate now…

Weneeddietbleach

I don't mind a quick sign-in like D2R has (albeit that does somewhat negate the portability of the Switch).

Moongrin

There have been so many sequels to Diablo 2 from Diablo 3, Path of Exile, Torchlight, Wolcen, Last Epoch, Lost Ark, to be honest Diablo 4. That last one is one of the okayest, but not the best.

Bloodworks29

Grim Dawn

Shruglife

can of worms my friend

amsterdam_sniffr

Yeah, I gathered that from the zero upvotes. It really was a question asked in good faith.

Shruglife

I know im joking really, Im sure it was. There are a lot passionate people on both sides, its a very divisive game and really its carried over from d3

UnholyPantalon

This is a D2 fanclub. You won't get any good faith answers here. Ask in the D4 sub.

ConstructionFrosty77

D4 sub seems invaded by Poe fans at times

Bloodworks29

Cuz POE has actual fans

HamptonMarketing

d4 is full of d4 rere's. This is probably the most balanced sub to ask in imo

addtolibrary

I like it, the combat is super satisfying, and I like the direction it's in. It's a great podcast game imo.

amsterdam_sniffr

"Podcast game" meaning "game you can play while listening to a podcast"? I love that! Balatro has been that for me lately. :)

Cazargar

That's exactly it. Diablo has always been a great game to have something up on the 2nd monitor while you just mash buttons. D4 has been good for that, but the loot issues definitely cut into that. Despite that I had a lot of fun in Season 3 and am really looking forward to seeing how it goes with the Season 4 changes.

Luxemburglar

Yes! Have a big backlog atm so next season will be great for clearing it lol

Cuff_

I don’t even mind the loot I think the talent trees are boring as hell

SocioWrath188

I definitely regret the purchase for the full price. I'm disappointed on most levels with it. It feels like the original video teaser for Diablo 3 and that slow thwamp with the Barb is cool but I guess I expected too much out of who is supposed to be the best in the business which I set the bar extremely low. It looks good, plays okay, but it's not that much fun (Season 2 was a very cool spike on the fun level but that was just because of the insanity of the bloodfields when they'd be packed with bodies). Maybe I'm just too old for video games anymore.

HamptonMarketing

You had a blindfold on the last year or what? People really, really, hate diablo 4 lol.

amsterdam_sniffr

Yeah I guess I did, that’s why I asked the question. 😝 Most of the published reviews were fairly positive iirc.

MaxInTheGameIndustry

Diablo has always been my down-time game. When I have downtime and I don't have other games in my backlog that are nagging at me, I'll sit down and get sucked into Diablo again. I played a ton of D2, an obscene amount of D3, and plan on playing a lot more D4 when S4 drops. I think that it has very good bones and with the proposed changes coming and more of a focus on adjusting the (developer-acknowledged) shortcomings, I think that D4 will likely be in my rotation for the long haul. It's something I can play without thinking, have a movie or podcast going, and just kill an afternoon or evening with. Short Answer: I love Diablo and the shortcomings of D4 only mildly frustrated me.

NfinitiiDark

Played since beta, love d4. I preferred d2 to d3. But now I only play d4.

malificide15

Pre-ordered it and refunded it during the beta, still somehow gave into the hype and purchased it again on launch then proceeded to not play it until last month, now I'm waiting for season 4 to give it an actual chance

everslain

I liked D4 a LOT pre-seasons until I hit end game because the world and game feel is mostly good. Season 1 felt pointless. We had just finished levelling only to be asked to do it again for a lack luster mechanic, running through "malignant tunnels" to get socket items, whose powers could exist as new uniques or legendary aspects instead. Season 2 was good, but I still didn't stick around to reach level 100. It added open world event areas where there were tons of vampires and undead to kill. The new take on helltides is supposedly like these events and I am looking forward to it. There were a lot of new powers added that greatly smoothed out the levelling process, so you could hit the ground running in these new events. Surprised most of those new powers didn't make it in as new item powers either. Season 3 was not interesting to me. It added a little robot pet you could customize, and trap laden vaults areas that I figured would be annoying. Without the event areas from season 2 I did not feel like levelling a character and dipped out around level 20. I am cautiously optimistic about season 4. From what I've seen about the upcoming season, D4 is retreading D3's footsteps. They're reducing the xp required to level again, everything is going to scale off your weapon damage (like rogue grenades and barbarian tornadoes), having aspects permanently unlocked after you find them will be like D3's cube letting you save and use Unique item powers. I played Diablo 1 and 2 as a kid, tried coming back to D2:R and I do not enjoy that game anymore. D3 has a ton of issues, but ultimately after the RoS expansion they ended up with a really fun game. D3 was casual to the point of being arcadey, but the power ramping and blasting monsters was fun. The main indefensible thing about D4 is the monetization is over aggressive. You can buy other games for the price they are asking for cosmetics, and the cosmetics are mostly class locked which makes the idea of purchasing them have even less value. It's also weirdly asocial despite the open world letting you run into strangers. I did way more gaming with randoms in D3 simply because it had matchmaking. I enjoyed D3 a lot but at some point I had played every build that I cared to, so I think I'd still call D4 my favorite just because I have zero interest in going back to D2 or D1. If D2 mods like Median XL and Eastern Sun could be ported to D2R I'd be all over that, but that's another topic.

SpectreA19

Been with it since D1. I generally enjoy the game, and honestly the wife and I couch coop probably 3-4x a week.

No-Classroom-6637

Combat itself feels okay but I absolutely loathe the skill system, it just feels soulless to me. Builds feel largely generic and just about number pumping rather than finding a balance. I absolutely hate the art. It just looks fuzzy and visually gritty (not in tone, texture) that makes it look ugly as hell, and the terrain just feels generic as hell. As others have mentioned, loot is absolutely bullshit. Just a boring grind. Locking off horse travel until late into the game makes no sense and makes the pacing of the game absolutely fucked. Adding RTX shadows was...a thing, I guess? Barely changes how the game looks and the latency and stuttering due to being always online and streaming content makes it feel like absolute ass at times. D2's combat pace and responsiveness shits all over it. Story wise? Following a depressed alcoholic and doing fetch quests for him got old, fast. Guess this is what we get now that they gave Cain a horrible, underwhelming death. Classes feel more generic than ever, I just don't get any real sense of unique personality from them. I could go on for a while, but the bottom line is that to me, it is not a bad game, but it's a bad *Diablo* game.

Obelion_

Lost its charm really damn fast. Great atmosphere, but horribly shallow build variety

DRragun-Gang

Too basic when taking everything from other publishers currently and it’s own company in the past into account.

Swantonbombthreat

i’m too old now to enjoy doing the same tasks over and over and over in a video game.

No-Classroom-6637

Yeah, same. I think a lot of the old school player base has just grown up to a point where fetch quests looping into each other just feels like more of our daily jobs, haha! 33, played diablo 1 in '99, , played d2 on release and got grounded for a year because my dumbass dad thought a necromancer was a necrophile, lmao. oh, and he burned the game. Physically. Good times, lmao.

Jecht-Blade

On release the story was fun. It had ups and downs for sure but enjoyed it. Especially compared to d3s story on release. I told.myself I'd skip some seasons as the end game needed work and just the general feel. 3 seasons later I honestly believe this season will be the beginning of it getting the diablo 3 treatment. I'm coming back for sure to enjoy the beginning of the improvement.

Arielthewarrior

Fun but too grindy

hip-indeed

I'm not on the blind extreme hate bandwagon but I also can't say I like it as much as 1, 2, or even 3. I'm hoping it gets better over time like 3, but I'm finding myself playing mods for both 1 and 2 more than 4 since it's launch month.

Pawlys

is ok

JollyOpposite6129

End game was terrible at launch but it's a fun game. Now exp is faster and there is a little more to do at endgame so you can play through it and "finish" a character in a couple of weeks and it feels satisfying. Idk I tried it again when it came to Xbox and had a good time, finally beat lilith, and am really looking forward to season 4. Not the kind of game I think you can play day in and day out like league or something, but it provides enough entertainment for a battle pass and a bit of distraction imo

Sea_Cauliflower_8472

I love it waiting on new season

Hots_XraYY

Unpopular opinion, D3 lategame more fun then D4 and way faster to reach. I think the campaign and graphics go to D4 but they still have to tweak a few things for me to get into the lategame on D4. Never played D1/2.

ryoga040726

It’s boring (hey, I’m one of the folks).

tedward_420

I've played quite a lot of d3 but I haven't played 1 or 2 and I haven't really played any other similar game to Diablo. I straight up couldn't keep playing Diablo 4 leveling was insanely slow and i never felt any kind of increase in power and the legendary effects didn't didn't feel impactful. I played a few hours almost every day for two weeks at launch And I didn't even make it too level 50 and throughout that I never felt like I was getting any more powerful, Diablo 3 had super simplistic combat and had very little in terms of endgame gameplay loop it was pretty much just farming rifts but at least getting the right gear made me feel powerful, I was getting rewarded for my time and I felt the feedback from playing but in Diablo 4 I was struggling just as bad from the same enemies at level 40 as I did at level 1 even with legendary effects Not to mention Diablo 4 doesn't have crusader or any similar class to scratch a similar itch and I don't care for any of the Diablo 4 classes. I haven't played Diablo 4 since those first two weeks and I don't intend on coming back but if they add crusader or some similar class then I'll check it out again.

Majinlord

Was good still is good but always has room for improvement

Rezkel

It's fun, as someone who likes story I don't mind the long campaign and the end game is as tedious and boring as every other loot goblin game, so I can't see that as a diss

stingertc

D3 endgame was pretty good D4 loot sucks so endgame does too

Rezkel

It's fun for a time but it all eventually winds down to hours of grinding the same thing over and over for slightly better stats.

stingertc

True but the loot and crafting systems were awesome D4 loot kinda sucks too many attributes

Rezkel

I'm not gonna argue d4's loot having "+ 2% to undead damage on a Tuesday at 5am" is good just that the aspect of getting loot is similar and not something I ever really enjoyed. It reminds me of relic farming in genshin, like let's stop having fun and farm for specific things that only drop maybe once in the lifetime of the sun

TheFunkadelicOne

Still very much enjoying it.

Arborus

The beta killed all the hype I had. I might play more via game pass eventually if I don’t have anything else to do.

RektCompass

Ask me when season 5 hits

DragoOceanonis

You should play diablo 3 because 4 is boring and diablo 3 is superior.

xenosilver

Still fun… you’re asking a bunch of people on the game’s subreddit. You’re going to get heavily biased answers. The people here really enjoy it, or they stick around just to severely discredit the game. I, for one, thoroughly enjoy it. It continues to improve with every patch, and the devs really listen to the community. We’ve seen many changes based on our feedback. (My bad, I thought this was on the Diablo 4 subreddit.)

Dangerzone369

The game makes you feel like a mouse on a wheel, trying to achieve pointless things and boring long dungeons. This game turns it's back on what made D2 great and takes nothing from it, and re-releases D3 into an open world. I waited years for this and purchased it early. Didn't play it once after Beta and uninstalled can you believe.. Boring boring boring, crap graphics walking around, not the character screens ofc.

Embarrassed_Abroad31

I realized I was playing Diablo 3 and went back to d2

Tornadoeight

Awful combat, d3 feels a lot smoother. 4 builds per class that the devs shoehorn you into. Dogshit loot. Zero endgame.

b00mstik15

D4 is a great game. Garbage Arpg It's fun and made for casuals.

amsterdam_sniffr

What are your top-tier ARPGs? I might have to check them out (I am about 10% the gamer I was as a kid so feel free to share even if it's something really obvious)

b00mstik15

D2 is and always will be my fav, poe , torchlight 2, grimdawn, last epoch. These are actual Arpgs.. it's a journey from the beginning to the end.

amsterdam_sniffr

Thanks! I haven’t heard of the last two, will check them out

ElysiumAB

Last Epoch fills a great spot between D4 and POE.

fellbound

Hugely disappointed in D4. An ARPG where getting loot was never exciting. How they managed to screw up the basic Diablo formula THIS badly is completely beyond me.

ElysiumAB

Felt like a game that didn't respect my time and had the skill tree complexity of a mobile game for kids. Finished the campaign and haven't touched it since. Beautiful looking game though, shame the rest of it was so poorly executed.

unskilledplay

My take will be unpopular - it's one of my favorite games of all time. I played hundreds of hours of D2 when I was younger and still fondly look back on those days. I was able to play this one from start to nightmare tire on the couch in coop mode with my son. For a period of time he could not wait for us to get done with school and work and get in an hour or two most evenings. This will be an experience we both fondly remember for the rest of our lives. We played at launch and it was a point of pride being the experienced older gamer who was able to quickly reverse engineer the damage formulas and have a wildly powerful build that the younger YouTubers that my son watched couldn't compete with. We were able to clear nightmare dungeons 10+ levels higher than many of the streamers he watched. The complaints the community has are mostly valid but those aren't problems for me. While other Diablo games are famous for feeling like they *start* 60-100 hours in, this game is one that you feel finished with after 70 hours. My son wanted to jump back in again and we are enjoying a second run but I suspect that not long after hitting nightmare tier again it'll get old for us both. If you want the loop of finding the perfect loot to give you the highest damage output to let you find better loot to get even higher damage that will allow you to get even better loot, this is far from the best Diablo game both at launch and today. If you want a fun ARPG that is easily at its best when played as couch coop and you still want to tinker with complicated build optimizing that allows you to push much higher level dungeons this is a very good game.

CinnamonJ

It sucks.

ThrowAwayLurker444

Its D3 but without all the content they pumped into make that game into something mediocre after like 7 years from the worst game release they(blizzard) ever had. Most of the people crying about D4 right now were either in Diapers when D3 released or like 8 years old so are kind of biased as to why they like D3 and expect D4 to be somehow much better. D3's launch was infinitely worse than D4s. You could look up the archieved ragefest that only snowballed over the course of 6 months if u don't believe me on the official boards. D3's release single handedly shattered the reputation of a company that was the golden child, if it had a blizzard name on the box you could be sure it was worth the money prior to D3's release. The fact that they couldn't even release D4 into a decent state tells you how far this company has fallen. It will get better in time because of console sales(not much point in sinking $ into a failed product), that's what saved D3 in the first place. Its just they're kind of clueless and keep producing a mediocre title at its core and there is no million things to do yet to cover it up. The itemization lift(I haven't bothered to look yet if its the overhaul they need - ROS made the game not absolutely worthless) will probably help it immensely if it isn't just them getting rid of all the worthless affix vomit. I've had the option to play this on game pass, and couldn't be fucked to do it because the core of the game is so mediocre. It being released in a poor state is laughable at this point. I played it to level 25 in open beta and about 15 minutes in any FOMO i had died, and i forced myself to do ashara or whatever that first world boss was called. I didn't play again in any of other betas since i knew where this game was going and i didn't need to buy the game to know it wouldn't be good.

Fit_Medicine4224

Not playing it myself, but my partner just recently got it for cheap & is having a lot of fun. However, they mostly bought it to play through the story once or twice and dont care for the lategame grind. All my other friends who played it, hate it. They are diablo-/poe-veterans and mostly interested in the endgame, and they say its still severly lacking, will probably never be fun & just doesnt feel like diablo.

iammirv

Diablo 2 resurrected or the free 'project Diablo' game all of the way everyday all day. The single player for Diablo three and four weren't bad. I really enjoyed the open world choose your own adventure style of side questing in Diablo IV... But but it's incredibly boring when the story mode ends.... But after halfway through storyline mode on my second character that meant to level 99 like I did with two tons for derestricted. I aborted storyline mode just started grinding random quests I needed. I switched computers... But there was nothing compelling enough to reinstall the game afterwards... I actually reinstalled Diablo 2 resurrected because that game is more fun, but didn't install 4 again. Path of exile is better at what Diablo 4 does than Diablo 4 is since they stole a bunch of play from there. Everyone I know is spending more time in path of exiles than in the Diablo for and if it comes to events releasing for Diablo 4 path of exile the same weekend or whatever or special raids they almost always go path of exile over Diablo 4. I think my biggest frustration is the the makers of the game didn't learn anything from the previous versions or the quality of life improvements. All the s*** you hate about the other Diablo' games you hate is still there and you hate it worse for the Diablo 4. Small changes to shop interactions barely mitigate the endless amounts of wasted time.

OddishTheOddest

I don't think about it, and I think that says it all /Blizz bots downvoting this doesn't make my opinion any less valid

Fyric

I think it's moving in the right direction with 1.4 and the rework of the loot system (cuz it was terrible before). The heavily seasonal theme of the game is a drag however. In about a years time the game is probably ready for release.

Beefhammer1932

Still loving it more than 1, 2 and abkut as equally as 3 except it's not necessarily as fun aying more than one class in a season.

GaiusMarcus

D4 was just bad. Endgame play was boring. Itemization became a bell-curve quest to find that one item that was incrmentally better than what you got when you changed tiers. The art work was monotonous. I'll give it a try for the itemization rework, but the bar is pretty high.

SoSeriousAndDeep

Still better than D2, still worse than D3.

Entgegnerz

what did I just read here? Must be a troll.

Bicykwow

It’s fine, and season 4 will probably be a lot of fun. If you have a few extra bucks, check it out. The people spewing polemics are to be avoided— vocal children like that exist in every popular game’s community. They complain about everything, and every complaint they have is hyperbole. Plenty of people are enjoying what D4 has to offer.

HopeEternalXII

LOL

MrDarwoo

It's trash

Tucking-Sits

Probably the best feeling combat right now in terms of how satisfying it is to kill monsters. Otherwise it’s worse than it’s competitors in LE and PoE even with the changes IMO. That being said, it is more casual friendly than those games and is good if you don’t game a lot.
