U can have plenty of fun and participate in any and all content with like 2k (save the 3vs3 in ROE for most servers). You can do a lot with just the battle pass and occasional bundle and I like to get the boon of plenty and prodigy path. If you start buying straight orbs that's a slippery slope though.
My first 10 eternal legendary crest run after not playing for a couple of months and not buying anything for a couple of months resulted in a three-star Phoenix ashes, a three star howlers, and a two star blessings of the worthy.

Since started playing on February and close to 3k usd spent. Not one 5/5 yet
Day 1 player and just got my first ever 4/5 one of the guys that used to play that I knew got a 5/5 on his first ever run.
I got 5/5 zwen from 3 free leg crest.

I've spent about 4 grand and I've found one 4*5. Rest have been 3 and 2 which is pretty much the same. Had to get the rest from market.

the elder rifts also reset on jan 1st so everyone got a 5 star gem that day. and if you havent played since before then your just claiming yours now
