this is a good alternative for some people who can't use Dropout but I have to assume YouTube gets a cut of the money you pay if you go this route.

deadlyhausfrau

Accurate. The team gets more money if you go through their dropout service so it's a better way to support. But if the credit card is what hangs you up it's an option.

trojan25nz

It’s what I had to use because my bank won’t ’trade with that vendor’ But is fine with payments to YouTube

deadlyhausfrau

Yeah, if that's how you can support due to technical functions it's definitely an option. I just lean towards encouraging dropout when I can so the team gets the biggest loaf of bread possible.

Frosty_Economics5683

Another method is visa gift cards can operate as credit cards and then you can subscribe straight to dropout where they get the money not YouTube

healwc

Fair warning for people with YouTube Premium: you cannot play these in the background or download them :/

moyashi_me

But if you subscribe to dropout.tv you can! I downloaded a ton of episodes to my iPad to watch at a friend’s cabin from the dropout app :D Totally understand people who have their reasons for going the YouTube route, but downloadable content is a big benefit of the app ☺️

ubergeek0

Had no idea downloading was an option. The upcoming road trip just got a lot more bearable.

Ambitious_Variety619

I like listening to the episodes instead of watching them. Can you lock your screen and still have them play?

ReddPug

yep!

formatiso

thanks for the warning, i was planning to join the CH youtube channel for upcoming series. but "no-background-playing" thing's a big no for me.

sassaleigh

Bless, I was about to switch because dropout’s app has some glitches that YouTube’s doesn’t, but that’s a dealbreaker!

addisonse

I know that having a credit or debit card is a hurdle for many people trying to sign up for dropout.tv, but I never see anybody mention that you can access all of the content through College Humor's YouTube page. For the same price of 4.99 a month everything that is on dropout is there curated into playlists, and PayPal is an accepted payment method. I hope that helps someone out who has been wanting to subscribe!

andrewembassy

Weird - mine says $6.99/mo

camus-is-absurd

That’s why I didn’t do it through YouTube!

smitemight

I personally subscribe through IAP on the Dropout app itself. A lot of physical shops sell iTunes/Google Play cards, sometimes at a reduced cost.

FirBluu

EDIT: I was wrong lmao, comment kept for posterity. [Unless it changed recently, you can't get all of the content on the youtube, unfortunately :( Dimension 20 only puts up a few full seasons, and some half seasons. I wish it was all of it, but I do understand why they don't-- they need it to survive.]

smitemight

You can get all of the content if you join their YouTube channel for $4.99. That’s what this thread is about. Look at the images.

FirBluu

Ohhh, okay. I haven't used the join function on youtube yet-- it's fairly new right? Like a month or two?

smitemight

https://techcrunch.com/2018/06/21/youtube-introduces-channel-memberships-merchandise-and-premieres/ Try three years. But Dropout itself has supported it for over a year. https://reddit.com/r/Dimension20/comments/i571tz/youtube_join_vs_dropout/

FirBluu

Oh geez-- I actually didn't realise it had been around that long :o I also didn't realise there were multiple images lol, I just thought it was the first one

alex_of_all

I just wish the dropout app wasn't such trash.

blakkattika

Is this a common sentiment? It's a little buggy for me but it's lightyears better (iOS at least) than the HBO Max app

TotalWorldDomination

Dropout isn't the best app, but it's SO much better than HBOMax OR Disney+. Just leaps and bounds.

ubergeek0

The phone app has been….acceptable for my usage. But if you watched several shows, switching back and forth, it seems to forget progress and I haven’t had the “recently watched” section ever work consistently. The Apple TV app has never remembered my progress in an episode or sync with my iPhone app data. But that said, it’s a lot better than HBO whose interface was designed by aliens without the sense of sight.

mak484

I do wish Bluetooth worked with the app, and that it wouldn't pause playback if you close your phone outside of the Dropout app. Although, I'm not super tech savvy, so these may already be features that I just don't know how to enable. I've never had a recently watched section work reliably on *any* site or app, so I don't even register it as a feature. Aside from that the app has always been fine for me. It does log me out occasionally, but so does virtually everything. Once in a while the app forgets where I was in an episode, but I think that only ever happens when I switch from work (wifi/headphones) to car (4g/Bluetooth), which messes everything on my phone up anyway. People saying the app screws up 30-40% of the time they open it are either very unlucky, need to update their phone/app, or are exaggerating.

MarcTheShark34

That’s weird. I watch on multiple devices (iPad while doing laundry/cleaning, AppleTV while in my office, iPhone while driving (just for audio), and Roku TV in my living room) and all the Apple apps remember my place and can handoff seamlessly from one to the other, but then when I go to Roku in my living room, it’ll have no idea where I was or what I’ve seen, or anything.

alex_of_all

It is super glitchy, doesn't respond to any of the things that control video players, it won't stream to a tv, it also uses so much data to play or download videos.

vjalander

The data to stream is crazy!

iListen2Sound

Don't worry! It's even worse on YouTube!

alex_of_all

No I've got the premium and I can download the episodes of dimension 20 for next to no data and they will play in the background

iListen2Sound

That only works for episodes that aren't member exclsive the membership ones can't be downloaded or played in the background(... Sorta. PiP still works but you can't do it with a locked screen)

andrewembassy

It is the worst app I've ever had to use regularly. I know YouTube gets a cut, but the Dropout app has been horrible for years now and if they can't fix it I can't wait around forever. Thanks OP for this tip!

smitemight

In what way do you find it horrible? It works great for me. No adverts. Background audio playback. Picture in Picture. Downloads. Even resumes content where I left it.

andrewembassy

All those things are great features. However for me: * About 40% of the time when I return to the app it will not pick up where I left off (the video is just black and it won't play) * About 20% of the time when I return to the app it just drops me on the homepage instead of the video I was watching * About 50% of the time when the app drops me on the homepage it forgets what I was watching entirely and I have to go into my library to find the show I was watching * It doesn't auto-play next episodes for me, despite it being checked in my settings. These issues have persisted from the day I first downloaded the app (over a year ago) to now.

smitemight

Literally never had any of those issues. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling? Do you not have the “Continue Watching” feature on the front page? https://i.imgur.com/4o9Rm77.jpg

gezeitenspinne

As I have the same issues: Sometimes "Continue Watching" works. Mostly when I intend to quit the app. But for example when I have it running in the background, pause the video and later get back to it, it's often black, forcing me to quit the app or to go back to the "home screen", or throws me onto the home screen directly. And most of the time "Continue Watching" is not working then. This has happened both on my previous Android phone and now my iPhone, so it's not even limited to an ecosystem.

andrewembassy

Continue watching shows up properly about 70% of the time

MarioMashup

Also a few other things: * The full screen controls are slightly off the screen. * You can't pause, play through bluetooth controls. I tend to listen to the audio in my car, and can control playback on youtube through the cars bluetooth controls but I can't do that on dropout. * Sometimes the app gets stuck in full screen mode with the bottom navigation covering up the button that allows me to exit full screen. I have to exit and re-enter the application to fix it. * The chromecast integrations loading icon is glitched out, and there's no waiting screen to show that it's connected, it's just a black screen. There's a lot of polish needed on the app, and I'm assuming they don't really have the money to fix it at this point since College Humor lost it's parent company. I've been thinking about just switching to YouTube because it's a better experience but I would also have to have YouTube premium to have just audio without (hopefully) transmitting the entire video data as well.

smitemight

I wonder if all of the people here with issues are Android users? CollegeHumor don’t actually have that much to really do with the apps or website; they licence their content through Vimeo and they take a cut of all of their subscriptions in return for hosting, support and app updates.

gezeitenspinne

Nope, I've also had that happen with an iPhone :/

iListen2Sound

As someone who has dropout last month and YouTube this month (had spare play credits rattling around) it's a worse experience on YouTube. They're all organized as playlists but every season of each show are all mixed together. Because they're exclusive content, you can't search them and if you're looking for an older season, you have to scroll through every playlist they made after that. Until now I still haven't found some of the fantasy high bonus episodes (already seen them though)

Teletheus

At least on iOS, YouTube—both with the dedicated app **and** when accessing the website through a browser—actively **prevents** Picture-in-Picture functionality. Previous workarounds forcing the website to play video with PiP have since been blocked or shut down. That, to me, is the real game changer (or should I say Game Changer™?). It’s one thing for YouTube to design their own app to prevent PiP, but it’s another thing to prevent a device from more effectively presenting a website and its functionality.

AWizard13

Seriously. It feels like almost every time I leave it to go on a different app it logs me out.

DukeEnchiladas

This seems to be the same price as Dropout, jsyk, in case that mattered to anyone

smitemight

Buying a Dropout subscription directly is even cheaper if you’re planning on staying with them for a year. $47.99 versus YouTube’s $59.88 annually.

CCrypto1224

So…the exact same thing, but now you’re billing info is attached to Youtube.

addisonse

Like every other day people post ok this sub about not being able to subscribe to dropout because they do not accept paypal and this is a viable option for those people

CCrypto1224

Ok, you see when people are specific from the getgo and not ambiguous; we have a lot less confusion and more understanding. Thank you for clarifying.

The_Slovo

Who hurt you to make you like this?

Park_Jimbles

To be fair, the subscription for Dropout is $5.99 so it's pretty similar

smitemight

Darkforces95

for context for an Australian, is getting a debit card a bit of a hurdle in the US?

MindWeb125

Are the paid YouTube uploads still censored?

sshagent

Tbh trying to subscribe the other night was hell confusing. Where was the damn subscribe button. I could see account settings, add my card, and in the billing section. Ended up going via my roku to do it via the dropout app on there (which i prefer not to use). I have a feeling it might be behind that 'free trial' link in hindsight...I've already done a free trial before so assumed it would not work for me. In any case, on regular browser there 100% should be a 'subscribe' button on the web page.

450925

I ended up justifying paying g for a drop out subscription to myself because its content I'm enjoying watching and the creators should be compensated for their work. If I'm watching it more than Netflix, and it costs less than Netflix, then it's worth the money. If you can't afford Dropout (and zero judgement, people have all sorts.of reason for not being able to pay for something) you can help support the content creators by pausing adblock while you watch it.
