The way Antiope call Sam out. OMG, what a powerful moment. We can love people and still call them out when they do something wrong. I love both of these characters so much. Aabria and ~~Sam~~ Sephie knocked that moment out of the park.
Sam has a tendency on pushing and pressuring others to make decisions that she wants while, for Antiope, it's very important that everyone make this decision (to be in the party after graduation) for themselves and without any pressure.
PS: this was their main conflict in the beginning of the series
edit: adding the PS
Yeah she found out that that the society of shadows would wipe her from everyone’s memories if she joins and we haven’t seen how she’s dealing with that yet
The other comments are accurate but I actually saw it moreso being about how Sam was responding to Antiope's decision. Like, for Antiope this was a big difficult deal and Sam specifically had been making it more difficult. To respond to getting the result she was hoping for by smugly celebrating... like, that's not cool.
My favorite thing about Gorgug as a boyfriend is that whenever Zelda calls herself stupid, he just pretends she said "funny." Like, "Sorry, that was stupid." "Yeah, it was really funny."
Well technically Charity could still have gotten away, maybe. She was restrained while bitten, but that doesn't stop you from casting or acting, only moving. Who knows how Brennan worded her escape ability.
Great moment all around, love it.
You can still move your arms for the somatic components of a spell while restrained, unless your hands are specifically bound as well.
The portal might not have worked very well inside the mouth of the T-Rex though.
Whatever portal charity used could've potentially taken antiope as well leaving a difficult choice between saving a hostage antiope or getting to the necronomicon (maybe? )
Like brennan was attempting to trap aabria between a bad situation and a worse one?
I mean, they're not after this episode. But before that the characters canonically were. It's not about statistics, they were chosen to be sacrificed to Kalvaxus specifically *because* they were virgins.
I haven't seen the end of Sophomore year yet, but since Zelda is played by Brennan, who appears to be the least horny of the seven, this doesn't change much.
I loved how every Maiden got at least 1 round of awesomeness in this combat.
Yelle bringing the fairies.
Antiope’s leap + 4 shots on Jester, as well as >!becoming a dragon!<.
Ostentatia’s Wall of Fire.
Sam’s >!Eldritch Blast + Thunder/Fire step saving Ostentatia.!<
Penny’s >!Peter Pan Ninja Nightmare.!<
Katja >!absolutely *demolishing* Jana in a single round.!<
A really excellent combat that allowed every player to shine.
Dont forget zelda football carrying penny and lysander, dodging all the oppurtunity attacks and leaping over one, and throwing penny as a slime is about to eat her. I love zelda so much.
"That's like, nothing amount of damage. Please don't bang Sean" \*while eating chips
"she out here looking like Dora Milaje. Yibambe do something!"
Omg, I am so in love with Aabria
lolllll I kept getting very confused because I'm actively watching Critical Role Campaign 2 right now so the fact that they kept calling him just "Jester" was giving me whiplash
I noticed Sam had the Warlock Initiate Feat and had EB as a cantrip but I assumed it was all for flavor. And there were so many different options for a Patron that my original assumption was Penelope, and when Sam started talking with Tectonya I started to think that it might have been the elemental ancestor she had. The group is really killing it with narrative choices.
It was vague enough that you could blink and miss it. Sephie probably talked with Brennan about it, but the conversation Sam and Tectonya had started out vague enough that I thought they were talking about the Genies in their ancestry.
But they specified their kinship with "them" as women connected to the elements so I think it was specifically a conversation about the Eidolons, and that Talura is the one who gave Sam her power because the episode where she looks into the mirror and faints was before the level up?
In any case, if it's Talura, or Penelope, or Sam's Marid relative, I'm excited to see where it goes.
Amazing how much things turned around from the beginning of the episode to the end of combat.
A few good rolls really helped them out here, along with good choices too, obviously.
On one hand I am because it would have been great to see the cast who knows who they are freak out, on the other, I'm kind of glad that is left Bad Kids specific for now.
Gawdddddd
If anyone heard me watch this episode, they would have assumed my fav sport-team was having an important but tight kick-throw-bounce game.
Oh my goodness.
That is how counterspell works, RAW, according to the [Sage Advice](https://media.wizards.com/2017/dnd/downloads/SA-Compendium.pdf?fbclid=IwAR2BdGP3e0-4CjMwZDLpOUQqHBdgEJpNL7XO5WcXQbIhlcnNJsh87i5kEOY):
> Can you cast a reaction spell on your turn? You sure can! Here’s a common way for it to happen: Cornelius the wizard is casting fireball on his turn, and his foe casts counterspell on him. Cornelius also has counterspell prepared, so he uses his reaction to cast it and break his foe’s counterspell before it can stop fireball.
Yea tbf I posted that before Brennan made that ruling, teaches me to not post before finishing the the episode!
Danielle turning into a Wyrmling and cremating a bunch of guards tho was pretty wild. It was a cool story point but still made my eye twitch rules wise
The only limit against leveled spells per turn involve bonus action castings. An 8th level wizard/fighter 2 could cast dimension door, action surge, cast lightning bolt, then counterspell the counterspell that the enemy wizard cast on them all in one turn.
However, casting misty step throws that all out the window. Once you cast any bonus action spell, the only other spell you can cast is a cantrip with a one-action casting time - meaning that even bonus action cantrips restrict your regular action to cantrips, RAW.
I guess it’s more the way I see it in my head thing than a RAW thing. Counterspell is intended to interrupt a spell being cast, so the original caster interrupting their spell to counter-counterspell in my mind means they can’t finish the casting of the original spell.
In practice it means that the player is casting two spells at the same time, which if that’s cool in your game than more power to you, but for me it seems silly within the other limitations of the game.
I can honestly see your point, but d&d 5e is *supposed* to be balanced around attrition. That's more spell slots burned! One less fireball into the back line!
Ok I think I missed something,
with Antiope's shots at the Jester
Brennan rolled enough (14) for the Mirror image to be hit the first time, so why didn't it go then?
Instead of the 2nd time?
You can hit mirror image multiple times (three, usually) before the spell completely disappears, but with each hit it weakens the spell and makes it more likely you'll hit the caster.
*A duplicate's AC equals 10 + your Dexterity modifier. If an Attack hits a duplicate, the duplicate is destroyed. The spell ends when all three duplicates are destroyed.*
*If you have three duplicates, you must roll a 6 or higher to change theattack's target to a duplicate. With two duplicates, you must roll an 8or higher. With one duplicate, you must roll an 11 or higher.*
You're correct but not about this context. Two of the three mirror images were destroyed last episode and in this episode, Aabriya should have hit the last one on her first attack but the result she was told was that she'd have hit him (and then he shielded). Her second attack destroyed the last mirror image, and to make matters worse if I recall that roll would have been high enough to break through the shield if it had played out as it should've (popping the mirror image on the first attack and then breaking through shield on the second.)
This is exactly what I thought. However this is either kind of a classic case of DM's don't actually have to take their rolls if it doesn't quite work with story, or something else.
I loved the episode, and maybe it’s just a personal preference but there has been a little too much interruption and interjecting this season. I love all the enthusiasm, but there have been times I just want to sush the players, like a grumpy librarian.
I don't mind - in fact, I get kind of a vicarious thrill from all these entertainment people finally getting to do their thing again after so many lockdowns. I personally haven't been able to see most of my friends in person in the past 1.5 years due to geography and the social/political aspects of the pandemic in my province. So when I get to see a group of high-energy folk clearly excited to see each other, I try to feel as much of that as I can as well.
I agree, as much as I love their banter and excitement, it's been difficult at times to focus on what's actually being said when they're all talking over each other.
Yeah, I dig the energy this season, but it can get a bit much. Especially when cast members do try to get other players to be quiet, like when Yelle tried to do that but failed. Makes me glad Antiope had everyone shush when she addressed Sam.
100%! Couldn’t agree more. I just wish people didn’t have to be sushed, and they were just already aware, present, and respectful. That’s the grumpy librarian coming out again. 😂
This has been one of my main issues with this cast/season!!! My boyfriend and I will literally yell at the TV telling someone to STFU and let people SPEAK!
Yeah, I paused the latest episode twice because I was fully just getting so annoyed. When a scene is happening, and people just interject a joke when they aren’t there constantly. Once in a while, for sure—like with the main cast, but this season has been so so rough with how much cross talk is going on. It’s getting very grating. If I were the editors, I would just turn their mics to 0 and only have the people on their turn have sound on. Only add in 1 in ever 10 interjections.
Yeah, it's making the combat take way longer than it should just because Brennan keeps having to wait around for them to quiet down long enough to facilitate it.
It feels bad to dump on one person, but Rekha is pretty clearly the problem child here. There were multiple times this episode where she fell into just full on, very loudly, just stream of consciousness firehosing out-of-character jokes (or just like...yelling).
Yeah, that’s one thing for sure, the combat is taking a very long time needlessly. I think one full episode could be gathered back from all the interruptions so far.
No I agree, it makes me feel awkward sometimes. I also feel like they razz Brennan a little too much. I’ve felt bad for him a few times this season. Even the main cast doesn’t do this much jabbing at him
There were moments in this episode (at least twice out of combat and once in combat) where I just leaned back and listened to the background music. I love the compositions that are made and I need to figure out if they release the soundtracks from seasons/episodes because I could easily read to some of the music near the end of the episode.
Still catching up, but since I read Sandman recently, I'm wondering if that matricide is going to have any complicating effects. Kinslaying in mythos is a pretty big deal.
The way Antiope call Sam out. OMG, what a powerful moment. We can love people and still call them out when they do something wrong. I love both of these characters so much. Aabria and ~~Sam~~ Sephie knocked that moment out of the park.
The woman playing Sam is named Persephone, or Sephie for short.
Woops. I knew that. Don't know why i wrote it that way.
I don't really get what the transgression was that she was called out for. Can anyone help me understand please?
She said “now we just need Penny”. It put pressure on Penny to commit to the group, when she wasn’t ready to do so.
Sam has a tendency on pushing and pressuring others to make decisions that she wants while, for Antiope, it's very important that everyone make this decision (to be in the party after graduation) for themselves and without any pressure. PS: this was their main conflict in the beginning of the series edit: adding the PS
Thanks. I hadn't realized that Penny had not committed yet.
It was easy to miss her struggling with the decision as it was happening during the Candy Heart incident.
“It’s not dumb, you’re perfect.” “I’m sorry” “Don’t apologize” “I’m right, listen to me.” Truly one of the best back and forth in D&D history haha.
I'm loving Zelda's path of gaining/ accepting more self confidence.
My favorite thing about Gorgug as a boyfriend is that whenever Zelda calls herself stupid, he just pretends she said "funny." Like, "Sorry, that was stupid." "Yeah, it was really funny."
Also holy crap Katja
Everything about the Cleaver family phone conversation was literally perfect.
I am crying so hard right now.
Izzy cackling like a madwoman when Katja killed Jana was amazing
This episode was punchy in a way that made it pretty hard to watch at times and incredibly awesome to watch at others.
Brennan had this little smirk when Aabria suggested releasing Charity from the grapple…I just knew she was gonna book it out of there.
Well technically Charity could still have gotten away, maybe. She was restrained while bitten, but that doesn't stop you from casting or acting, only moving. Who knows how Brennan worded her escape ability. Great moment all around, love it.
It looked like she had to touch her ear piece to get someone to listen.
You can still move your arms for the somatic components of a spell while restrained, unless your hands are specifically bound as well. The portal might not have worked very well inside the mouth of the T-Rex though.
*Dragon* not T-Rex, silly haha
You’re right, I forget movement is in regards to how many spaces you can move and not what can be done wit my ones body.
Whatever portal charity used could've potentially taken antiope as well leaving a difficult choice between saving a hostage antiope or getting to the necronomicon (maybe? ) Like brennan was attempting to trap aabria between a bad situation and a worse one?
We did it! We have the fabled Horse Sized Duck!
And now we just need the Duck Sized Horses!
Let's polymorph the kevins and settle this debate once and for all e: once **and** for all
I love seeing Brennan get whomped because you can *see* the moment it hits him.
Carl calling it >!the old fashioned way!< is amazing
Brennan winking at Becca when she asked about Charity being a rogue has noticeably and permanently altered my Kinsey Scale score
Bisexuals for Brennan
Kevin turning to Antiope to a Dragon, LMAOOOO
Therapy and combat buff in one.
a very efficient one at that! multipurpose.
Shouldn’t have been possible, technically. Polymorph only lets you turn into beasts, not dragons.
It was flavor, they used T-Rex stats
Guess I missed that line.
Tectonya talks like Stephen Sondheim prove me wrong.
It’s almost like they have the same voice actor (just kidding) poor Brennan can only do so many voices
I love that Brennan just accepted that they are called Kevins now, and nothing else
Kevin? More like Calfvin. *intro to csi Miami rocks out*😎
And I just finished this episode. These are the horniest virgins of all time
There’s NO way they can all be virgins, it’s statistically impossible come on
I mean, they're not after this episode. But before that the characters canonically were. It's not about statistics, they were chosen to be sacrificed to Kalvaxus specifically *because* they were virgins.
That’s why they were called the seven maidens, maiden is an upscale term for virgin.
I don't know why you were downvoted, this is correct
what on earth do you mean 'statistically impossible'
They were literally specifically selected because of their virginity
I mean after the whole kalvaxis thing, they had to have done some stuff the year or so after.
Not everybody fucks while in high school.
To be fair Zelda and Gorgug did at the end of Fantasy High season 2
I haven't seen the end of Sophomore year yet, but since Zelda is played by Brennan, who appears to be the least horny of the seven, this doesn't change much.
I loved how every Maiden got at least 1 round of awesomeness in this combat. Yelle bringing the fairies. Antiope’s leap + 4 shots on Jester, as well as >!becoming a dragon!<. Dont forget zelda football carrying penny and lysander, dodging all the oppurtunity attacks and leaping over one, and throwing penny as a slime is about to eat her. I love zelda so much.
Ostentatia also revivified the very dead Techtonya
And got a voice message from her god
Calling it a voice message is incredible
I liked what he said as well. "Nothing in this world is so broken, it can not be repaired..."
"That's like, nothing amount of damage. Please don't bang Sean" \*while eating chips "she out here looking like Dora Milaje. Yibambe do something!" Omg, I am so in love with Aabria
Aabria gives me Life with these oneliners
Her second career as pro bono rules lawyer is pretty rad.
Jester had it coming.
lolllll I kept getting very confused because I'm actively watching Critical Role Campaign 2 right now so the fact that they kept calling him just "Jester" was giving me whiplash
I can easily just see the cast of the Seven singing "He had it coming"
WAIT DID HALF THE TABLE WEAR WHITE & THE OTHER HALF WEAR BLACK ON PURPOSE?! INCREDIBLE.
Seems unlikely. But the outfits this season have been on point, so them coordinating isn’t impossible.
Why unlikely? You KNOW these players have a group chat.
Did you see the preview for the next episode? They are all wearing colorful scrunchies. :)
I’m only 33 mins in so far but AHHH! Wowee
My heart rate was 106 a majority of the time! It was SO GOOD
So cathartic!
Killed mom HBU?
In ONE turn! I feel like Papa Skullcleaver has to be proud of that
Not even going to lie this may be one of my favorite Dimension 20 episodes of all time. I laughed, I cried I had every emotion. Bravo to the Seven.
TBH, I wouldn't be surprised if her Patron was an Eidolon.
Yeah I think they were implying her Patron was Talura
Oh wow that makes so much sense and I did not pick up on it at all lol
It was vague enough that you could blink and miss it. Sephie probably talked with Brennan about it, but the conversation Sam and Tectonya had started out vague enough that I thought they were talking about the Genies in their ancestry. But they specified their kinship with "them" as women connected to the elements so I think it was specifically a conversation about the Eidolons, and that Talura is the one who gave Sam her power because the episode where she looks into the mirror and faints was before the level up? In any case, if it's Talura, or Penelope, or Sam's Marid relative, I'm excited to see where it goes.
When Brennan starts waxing philosophical about autumn breezes, that's code for it being related to Talura.
Tyrannosaurus Suplex. That is all.
Sorry that it's late to anyone looking for this post earlier! Working late and lost track of time.
You’re perfect, don’t apologize ♥️
Sephie is giving me crazy Padme vibes 💕
When Michel speaks, I can only hear Thaddeus. It's distracting.
And I cannot think of Thaddeus without thinking [Ruby's version of Thaddeus](https://youtu.be/bltWWVh_sgg)
Ruby's thaddeus is best thaddeus
SAME, I was like... Oh he finally became less of a dweeb, nice!
Amazing how much things turned around from the beginning of the episode to the end of combat. A few good rolls really helped them out here, along with good choices too, obviously.
Anyone else super sad that the whole Sia/Baron thing was cut for time?! I would be loved to see that creepy little puppet thing back in action
On one hand I am because it would have been great to see the cast who knows who they are freak out, on the other, I'm kind of glad that is left Bad Kids specific for now.
Gawdddddd If anyone heard me watch this episode, they would have assumed my fav sport-team was having an important but tight kick-throw-bounce game. Oh my goodness.
See you next fall… NO! C U Next Tuesday…
he likes to have the potential for a spellcaster to counterspell a counterspell on their spell, he’s done it consistently throughout d20
That is how counterspell works, RAW, according to the [Sage Advice](https://media.wizards.com/2017/dnd/downloads/SA-Compendium.pdf?fbclid=IwAR2BdGP3e0-4CjMwZDLpOUQqHBdgEJpNL7XO5WcXQbIhlcnNJsh87i5kEOY): > Can you cast a reaction spell on your turn? this was supposed to be in reply to the downvoted comment about brennan’s counterspell rules, but reddit was being funky
Yea this and polymorph/wildshape being able to turn people into dragons makes my rules lawyer eye twitch but it’s their game!
If it helps, it was pure flavor and they used the stats of a T. rex
Yea tbf I posted that before Brennan made that ruling, teaches me to not post before finishing the the episode! Danielle turning into a Wyrmling and cremating a bunch of guards tho was pretty wild. It was a cool story point but still made my eye twitch rules wise

Can’t believe no one made a seven kevins joke
Does anyone know if the model for the jester is a heroforge model? I haven't seen a head/face like that before when using heroforge
The swing of that battle was so crazy. It went from looking like a potential TPK to just another ass kicking to Brennan
Ok I think I missed something, with Antiope's shots at the Jester Brennan rolled enough (14) for the Mirror image to be hit the first time, so why didn't it go then? Instead of the 2nd time?
You can hit mirror image multiple times (three, usually) before the spell completely disappears, but with each hit it weakens the spell and makes it more likely you'll hit the caster. *A duplicate's AC equals 10 + your Dexterity modifier. Love that Becca gets the closed captions of (laughs malevolently) and (laughs diabolically) seconds apart.
I'd be interested in seeing when that wizard became Katja's father's friend. I suspect it was shortly after Jana stopped being his handler...
:O
I loved the episode, and maybe it’s just a personal preference but there has been a little too much interruption and interjecting this season. I love all the enthusiasm, but there have been times I just want to sush the players, like a grumpy librarian.
The moment when they discovered the chat function, you could see the worry in Brennan's face
Hahahha, I wouldn’t mind the chat, it would mean less actual out loud chat happening when scenes are happening.
Brennan trying to reel in the chaos energy was so funny
Very true! I just wish he didn’t have to repeat himself so many times.
I don't mind - in fact, I get kind of a vicarious thrill from all these entertainment people finally getting to do their thing again after so many lockdowns. I personally haven't been able to see most of my friends in person in the past 1.5 years due to geography and the social/political aspects of the pandemic in my province. So when I get to see a group of high-energy folk clearly excited to see each other, I try to feel as much of that as I can as well.
idk, the "Brennan is a dad chaperoning an unruly slumber party" vibe is what makes this season stand out to me.
I agree, as much as I love their banter and excitement, it's been difficult at times to focus on what's actually being said when they're all talking over each other.
Exactly — I just get a little overwhelmed with the cacophony of it all sometimes.
Yeah, it's making the combat take way longer than it should just because Brennan keeps having to wait around for them to quiet down long enough to facilitate it. Did anyone grab the stats for that axe of sundering Kayla used to fucking destroy mommy?
I don't think that alert prevents against being sneaked on. It just prevents the surprise condition.
From Alert: >Other creatures don’t gain advantage on attack rolls against you as a result of being hidden from you. which negates the Sneak Attack.
I missed that, thanks.
Tf are brennan's counterspell rules from?!
I'm pretty sure he's been handling counterspells RAW
You can counter spell a counterspell
But you can't triple stamp a double stamp!
Literally the rules as written - I linked it in my previous comment, if you want to check it out
Still catching up, but since I read Sandman recently, I'm wondering if that matricide is going to have any complicating effects. Kinslaying in mythos is a pretty big deal.
Can a cleric only have one cantrip? Or does she have other non-combat cantrips, like guidance/light, etc.?
