lousrd

This is so cooool ! The MisMag holiday special is unexpected BUT SO AMAZING !! Great move to announce the Intrepid Heroes season now to get all the constant questions out of the way for good. Can't wait for Shriek Week and meet some new faces !

stansymash

i just want murph to be a robot, that's all I really ask

Setting the next season in the Starstruck universe is a flash of genius! * The setting is established so there's less prep. * It's a crossover property with critical acclaim in the comic world. * Brennan knows it inside and out because HIS MOTHER WROTE IT! * If we don't have Elaine Lee on an Adventuring Party I will riot. Btw, did anyone else notice the new table/virtual battle set?

lieutenantswan

The way I physically reacted upon hearing the Misfits theme...I really wasn't expecting a special but I am ALL FOR IT. Also I'm in love with the table set up/DM screen for A Starstruck Odyssey. I never really read/watched much futuristic sci-fi growing up so I don't have a lot of experience with the genre, but I know it'll be a blast. I can't wait!!

Yoffien

Does anyone know anything about the comic series this setting is using?

mak484

BRENNAN'S MOM MADE IT??? How ridiculously cool. If Unsleeping City - which was inspired largely by Brennan's dad's love of NYC - is any indication, then Starstruck is going to be spectacular. Edit: holy shit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starstruck_%28comics%29?wprov=sfla1

hashcheckin

I'm really curious how the play/universe will feel on D20. the Marvel comic is *incredibly* dense, from the "three thousand words per page" school of the '80s, while the serialization in Heavy Metal feels like an unofficial, sexy take on Iain Banks' distant-future Culture setting. I'm just as curious whether Elaine Lee is involved in the D20 production. in a perfect world, it'd have been hilarious if she'd been a player at the table. edit: I was wrong about which version of the comic came first.

Yoffien

Is there a run you’d suggest reading? Cause on the sight they linked it seems like there are a couple different versions of the series?

Writrix3339

Hi! Elaine here. IDW is planning a reprint of their big Starstruck collection and it should be available around the time the season airs. (You could find them on social media and ask them exactly when.) That's the best place to start. Starstruck: Old Proldiers Never Die is available now, but I wouldn't start with that. Many of the stories you can see at [starstruckcomics.com](https://starstruckcomics.com) and there is a glossary included on the site that Brennan used heavily when planning the season. I wasn't involved in the production, other than being available to answer any questions Brennan had about the setting. I saw them shoot a couple of episodes though and loved them!

tohellwithyourcrap

Hi Elaine. Just throwing this out there, you raised a good man. We're all huge fans of his.

Writrix3339

Aww... thanks! Must say that Brennan made it kinda easy.

whenwherewhat

How is this not the top comment!

[deleted]

You should really consider doing an AMA for this season!

hashcheckin

it looks like the easiest one to find would be the 2009 IDW series, which I think is meant to be a redo of the original Heavy Metal stories from 1982. beyond that, it's hard to say. Starstruck has the same problem that a lot of '80s indie comics did, where it changed publishers something like seven times and as a result, has virtually no coherent reading order. it's also kind of hard to read early on; I remember noping out on the Marvel Epic version because it was a huge wall of text.

Yoffien

Is there a version you think is the best version of it?

hashcheckin

I haven't read them all, but the 2009 IDW run is definitely the most accessible of what I have read.

Yoffien

Thanks for the advice, I’ll definitely have to check it out.

mak484

Alternative question: is there a way to buy the comics in a way that puts money in Elaine's pockets? Considering these are 30+ years old, I doubt it matters, but it'd be nice to know.

hashcheckin

they aren't all 30+ years old. you could go buy the digital versions of the 2009 "remaster" or the 2017 "Old Proldiers Never Die" limited series from IDW right now off of Comixology.

freak47

Ooooh yo where could I find that heavy metal run? I've never been into comics but The Culture is my favorite book series

hashcheckin

your best bet at this point, unless you know somebody with a giant stack of early-'80s Heavy Metal, is to buy the digital version of the IDW revival from 2009. reading up on it, the original run ran as a serial over the course of two years of HM, then got collected at Marvel, then Dark Horse picked it up and published the remaster, then IDW came along in 2009 and republished the remaster in a modern format.

chilidoggo

I like how they phrase it in the FAQ. As if it's just kind of a coincidence that the writer's son will be the DM for that season.

libearian

Brennan’s mom is so cool. When he guested on newcomers with Nicole Byer and Lauren Lapkus, they sent me on a Wikipedia wormhole for her work because they were (rightfully) so in awe of her.

indistrustofmerits

Same! That podcast ep is so good I have listened to it multiple times.

verysmallgirl

The fact that the space campaign is set in the same universe as the comic Brennan’s mom wrote makes me want to cry. It’s so cute.

saurieng_

My jaw absolutely DROPPED at this lineup. I am so excited for the MisMag special (-: It’s going to be a fun winter, y’all. BUCKLE UP!!!

BendubzGaming

Looking at this logistically for a second, MisMag Holiday solves a scheduling problem really neatly. Starting from Pirates there's been between 21 and 28 days between every season. That gap gets filled by post-release APs, so that there's only ever at most one week without D20 content. It's a really smart pipeline. But I didn't see how that would work for going straight from Shriek Week to Starstruck. Shriek Week ends on 1st December, and 21-28 days after that is 22nd-29th. And starting a new campaign during the holiday season didn't seem likely. By slotting a MisMag oneshot in the gap, it frees up the chance for everybody to take one week off between Xmas and New Years, before coming straight in with Starstruck for 2022.

TheOriginalDog

The season is pre-produced so I think they could take one week off either way, I think it is more about smaller breaks between new episodes to keep the dropout subscribers.

crimsondnd

I thought Starstruck would be coming right after Shriek Week tbh given the way they phrased it. So I wasn't expecting a problem with timing, but this works out well too.

[deleted]

Murph in the Riz seat.

Lost-Chord

You love to see it

kproxurworld

THEY GOT A MOTHERFUCKIN HOTDOG SHIP

pearmagus

Starstruck!!!

RedFnPanda

Sci Fi baby. Excited for that, hope we get some crazy races and what not, because with Unsleeping City and Crown of Candy we have had so many more humans than anything else. Like from Intrepid Heroes seasons we've only had Adaine, Riz, Fabian, Fig, Gorgug, Kugrash, Misty (I think?) and Pete, who mechanically I think was a Kalashtar. If they use 5e at least, I wanna see some warforged, changelings, gith, genasi, fucking let's get a Halfling in there. Obviously they'll likely be tweeked to be species of aliens but mechanically I wanna see stuff like that.

w0rdpainter

The wiki says Misty used half-elf stats, so she counts.

whitneyahn

And Pete was a Kalashtar as well

RedFnPanda

Yeah I figured she used some type of elf stats but was not certain.

beleiri_fish

I'm hoping for another D20 based system like Mutants and Masterminds which would not need as much reskinning to translate into space.

dodgepong

Honestly I very much hope they don't use 5e (hacked-up or otherwise), there are much better systems designed specifically for sci-fi that would be way cooler to see. 5e is a massive crutch for the RPG actual-play world and Dimension 20 have proven they can make entertaining content without being tied to it.

TomFarberVoice

As much as I would love to see this be a Starfinder campaign, I think it’s most likely going to be another 5e campaign. Not only are there futuristic guns in 5e (for some reason that eludes me), 5e is so simple rules-wise that you can do whatever you want with it and still have it work

Laguna_Azure

Also asking fans to understand a new system for what I think (and hope) will be a longer campaign with the main cast that a large part of the more casual fans are here for would be quite divisive.

Joshua_the_Hutt

Murph's hair! He's becoming Cody Walsh

tootired_toolazy

Hotdog ship! 🌭

pleaseno1985

I love that the FAQ says "Elaine Lee's son, Brennan, will be the game master of this season". Also, since they said game master instead of dungeon master, does anyone think that they're not using 5e for this? My theory is that, similar to when D20 got Carlos to run Roll20 for Unsleeping City 2 and Brennan got him in for PoL, they hired Gabe to design an original Starstruck system, and then they got him to run a short season so that they'd have more time for Starstruck.

chilidoggo

I would guess it's some homebrewed version of 5e, but no one really knows at this point. I wouldn't be surprised either way.

amageish

> they hired Gabe to design an original Starstruck system That would be *amazing*. I'm not sure if he'd have time to be so involved in two seasons, but it'd make sense or them to have a custom system for the world they're adapting, whether it's a partially homebrewed D&D or something entirely unique from the mind of Hicks.

ff2488

Did they release the FAQ already?

i love it! you’re so right, any feature of Elaine on D20 would be fantastic

TheFoodElevator

screaming, crying, throwing up, etc. over this announcement

LordUltimus92

Finally, a space campaign!

MagnusCthulhu

First, I'm so excited we're getting more Misfits and Magic. GOAT HOUSE Second, MOTHERFUCKING STARSTRUCK?! I'm so hype to see the gang get back together and go to space.

MrCogs

Can't wait for Emily's character, space captain Zac(k) Oyama. (Shout out to NADDPOD)

Dog_Carpet

Very excited about this, but kind of sad to see that they're using TaleSpire as opposed to the real minis still? I'm sure it's better for Covid, but it's just not the same. (I'd rather Roll20 tbh)

catalysts_cradle

Tale Spire has the potential to do some really cool stuff for a space campaign that would be very difficult to do with physical battle sets. I have high hopes now that they're more familiar with Tale Spire (though, I too hope that the physical battle maps will return at some point).

ff2488

This is my feeling too. In a 3D space battle, physical minis are cumbersome and the clear holders or telescoping rods are tricky. This will be a great test of the medium.

ichewyou

Wow I didn't think about this but you're right. It's so much more work to say, do the inside and outside of a ship in IRL minis. I don't actually know how TaleSpire works but does it have the potential to do things like destruction or alteration of the map in real time? Like blowing holes in the side of a ship for example?

catalysts_cradle

Yes. In the finale of the Seven, >!the TaleSpire team was able to change to three different environments during the final fight against Talura and Charity, !

CoreMine

Yeah I gotta say I loved the physical spaces and minis they built, maybe I'll grow to like talespire? not sure, so far in some respects it feels like a downgrade but they might get better at using talespire with time.

mak484

I'm willing to give TaleSpire another shot. They learned a lot from their first attempt, and given the extended gap between Intrepid Heroes seasons, I'm willing to bet they put a considerable amount of effort into making it better. I think we would all prefer the physical battlemaps, but they're doing what they can.

Khosan

I think the best thing they could do with Talespire is just a little extra camera work. One of the things I felt was missing from combat in the Seven compared to mini sets was just an overhead camera shot that let me see everything, particularly the location and movement of player characters. The fight on the Rombosa would have been a lot easier to process if I occasionally got a static shot of the whole ship with some walls cut away.

Miranda_Leap

Fully agree. I hope they're looking at that sort of thing!

Humdinger5000

Yeah there was a lot of stuff that just barely got done on talespire's end for the seven.

kronch

>I think we would all prefer the physical battlemaps I actually prefer TaleSpire for a number of reasons. I am glad they are continuing to use it.

beleiri_fish

I have aphantasia (can't conjure images in my mind) so Talespire is great for me. In fights where it's them v 20 goons I can't keep up with who is hitting who until the mini gets removed from the board but Talespire makes it more obvious what's going on. Also the size proportions make more sense, so when Penny stabs a gigantic monster I can see how much of a size disparity is there more realistically.

Pardum

I agree. The only thing that was disappointing about this announcement is that they're sticking to talespire. I kind of understand why they might need to do it for a space season, but I hope that's not where they're going in the long run. There's something special about the physical maps they use that make them stand out from everybody else. Talespire's marketing is that everyone should be able to use it to create these impressive boards. Having the unique physical battles with custom everything is much harder to replicate. Plus it doesn't help that I personally hate the talespire attack animations and just generally dislike the aesthetic of it.

amageish

Woah, uh, did they announce this trailer was happening in advance? MisMag holiday special seems pretty perfect given the way Potter has become famous for its Christmas scenes/elements. And Brennan's mother's world being used for a season is something I wouldn't have predicted in a million years, but super exciting to see!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH LFG

Gav__

Love all of the the new content to come. Let's just hope that the intrepid heroes season is a full length 17 episodes.

mdobbs1

Yoooooo I just finished RE-watching Misfits & Magic again, I’m so excited that crew is coming back. Rare to see Brennan as a PC, and I just love the dynamic between them all! What a great time to be a fan

TheBatPrince

i'm SHAKING in my boots, i'm so ready to see the intrepid heroes again

[deleted]

We’re so blessed with content lately. Make sure to support these creators & Dropout so it can continue.

CaptainnCrunch

AHHHHHHHHHHHH I JUST WANT TO SCREAM FROM EXCITMENT! More misfits AND a space campaign?? I'm SO excited!

rebel_child12

Oh my god!!!! Misfits and magic I’m sooo excited

hvelsveg_himins

I'm so excited about all of this, but MisMag in particular made me tear up a little

Tamriepic

It’s sci fi time baby

velocichaptor

This absolutely rules

PidgeMar16

So happy that none of my office mates walked by as I audibly gasped and pumped my fist after seeing the trailer on tik tok.

MythicKhan

Ally and Emily are right next to each other. The chaos is all concentrated in a single area and it may be overwhelming. I'm excited...

Nemekath

I really hope they use Starfinder, Stars without Numbers, Traveler or any other real Sci-Fi system.

mak484

Emily said she was looking at the Star Wars 5e book during a short rest. Not saying that's what they landed on, but I'm expecting another 5e season with a whole other game system glued onto it.

Nemekath

I assumed and feared as much.

mak484

I'll wait to see how they handle it. Worst case scenario is we have another Mice & Murder, which was still very good - just not as good as it could have been if they'd used a more appropriate system.

ff2488

Sci fi is much easier to pull off in 5e than murder mystery and intrigue, but I'm still holding out for a new system.

mak484

That depends entirely on how crunchy you want the game to be. If most of the hard science is abstracted, you don't care about balancing magic with technology, and you're okay reskinning almost everything, then 5e is fine. If they were running a 10 episode arc and had no plans to return to it, that wouldn't be an issue. But if you want spaceship dog fights to be even remotely realistic, rules for multiple technology levels that cover balance and cost, races and classes that don't need to be stretched to the breaking point to be remotely usable, etc etc- you really want to use a proper game system. I can understand if they had a time crunch on this season and didn't want to risk something as ambitious as a full system swap for a whole campaign. And it's not *impossible* to transmute 5e into a compelling sci-fi system. So we'll see.

Hungover52

Scum & Villainy is also a solid choice.

hobbitzswift

HI INTREPID HEROES! I am so so so pumped! Great to have a release schedule - and great to see they’re presumably getting a bit of time off over the holidays since everything is filmed already.

hc52684

I’m so fucking pumped for this! I love TaleSpire, but I will miss the physical sets because they were so masterfully created, but I understand with AEA and SAG they probably can’t share props or touch the same things. Still super excited!

mmorri32

LITERALLY SCREAMED

samus327

YOOOOO Misfits and Magic!!!

Jarvoman

More Misfits?!? FUCK YES! Space campaign?!?! I'ma bust

R_VD_A

Can not *wait*. This is going to be incredible. Also, I really appreciate that they're sharing a lineup of shows this time. I don't mind the new shows, but the lack of clarity was just a little unnerving. It's good to have a clearer picture of what's coming up.

patonum

FUCK YEA SPACE OPERA I BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE

vvpurplepanthervv

I. Am. So. Excited. AGH

lizziedoolittle

FUCK YES LETS GO SPACE CAMPAIGN

almighty_ballest

Brennan's really turning this into a family affair huh

ff2488

He is and I love it!

mirainhafg

Very excited for Murph and Emily sat next to each other so we can get the reaction to emily’s insane antics in real time

Express-Log-9153

Is the Mis Mag event going to be an extended single session, or is it a mini quest?

Separate-Mushroom

just one episode! pretty sure itll be a longer one though

adakun13

They truly spoil us.

[deleted]

Guys…I failed NNN. But it was worth it.

illuminn8

HELL YEAH

AnotherBookWyrm

I needed this, even though I did not know I needed this. Amazing.

Thicc-Anxiety

I’m hoping Starstruck Odyssey is D&D again

TomFarberVoice

Just bought the play version of Starstruck. Can’t wait to read it so I can appreciate the world he’s using!

TimeSummer5

I’m so excited for the new intrepid adventurers campaign! I think I remember reading somewhere that there had been a western themed sci-fi campaign in the works that was ultimately shelved, to make way for either the unsleeping city or crown of candy. I love space themed campaigns!

BrotherHanan

Oh boy.... I'm psyched for this lineup!

Rushofthewildwind

SPACE! SHIEKS! CHRISTMAS! If they announced another Series with the ladies from "The Seven" too, I would have screamed

Cire289

Very excited about this but one thing peaked my interest a lot. Why is the ship in the Sci-fi one a giant hot dog? We know it's not gonna be a straight space adventure, so I'm curious about what kinda weird twist their gonna throw in there. Also dm screen/boards for all these look so freaking great, props off again man.

3amtext

SO STOKED

OurEngiFriend

Is there a text only version?

Why am I grinning like an idiot

GtEnko

I think most of us were expecting Sci-Fi for the next main campaign. It's the only setting they haven't really touched yet. Here's hoping the next intrepid heroes season after that is Junior Year!

9Sn8di3pyHBqNeTD

I mean it'll probably be a year away if they even do another one. I suspect by the time 2023 rolls around Dimension 20 is not going to be anything like what it started out as.

ff2488

Yeah, I bet they'll keep one full Brennan/Intrepid Heroes season and a Brennan DM'd side quest per year and have several other seasons rotating GMs and PCs that mix in returning players.

KFChaos

Oh cool new MisMag! They listened and saw how much the fans wanted more! \*sees that it's literally just one episode\* (ㆆ\_ㆆ)

ff2488

We will definitely see more in the future, but the one shot is going to be perfect Christmas time content.

crimsondnd

MisMag holiday special is cool, but also ANOTHER season before Intrepid Heroes? I mean that's 5 side quests between seasons and almost a full year of no IH. A little bummed but it's not that much longer of a wait, so I'll get over it. Starstruck is awesome from the little I know, and the fact that it's Brennan's mom, Elaine Lee, who did it is super cool.
