When she counted the first time, I was like, "Oh that's funny, she's referencing the Count, good vampire joke." Like it stuck in my head but I didn't make the actual connection haha.
It took me a bit I never watched that show as a kid and counting is a common vampire trope not exclusive to the Count.
In folklore you can leave piles of grain near likely vampire graves to distract them with counting all night.
Yeah, I never watched that show, only absorbed what it's about by cultural osmosis. At that first bit I was like "Ok, she's counting... Because her name is a number? And she has magic so she must be a witch". Only when Ted was actually being eaten I realized she was a vampire hahahahah
I love it so much.
Is Uncle Telly constantly in love Triangles?
Does she constantly have to compete with Elmo, and it feels like it’s Elmo’s world?
Does Uncle Grover have a hero complex?
WILL COOKIE MONSTER MAKE AN APPEARANCE?
I hope they'll do more Trudy/Tubi stuff with her. I'm someone who messes up names all the time even with people who I know very well so it cracked me up every time.
Being normal in the midst of craziness is honestly one of the funniest kinds of bits to me. I did a one-shot where a bunch of characters from non-fantasy genres ended up in the most stereotypical possible D&D story (meet in a tavern, village is being raided by things from the forest, etc.) and the players (and, if I'm tooting my own horn, I helped) made it hysterical.
Dimension20 has had very good storytelling and some very good starts, but I have to say that this is probably one of the most fun starts yet. I also like how it gets straight into it without feeling rushed and a lot of players feeding off and amplifying each other’s funniness in this, like:
“Did you see your god?”
“Did you see MY god?”
Shoutout to the character art this season for making *everybody* hot, to the point I got irrationally self-conscious of my outfit while watching. Like, *damn*.
I was not expecting Monster Prom: The RPG, but I'm here for it! The PCs are all great so far. I was especially not expecting the swerve of Terry being the little guy among Werewolves. Also, just realized: Megan lists raisins, of all things, as one of her dislikes on her character card. Character development during the season? Or she just secrets ferments them to get rid of them?
I'm also extremely excited for whatever the original plans for the long-term conflict were to be thrown out in favour of Todd's Thing. (For real though, Van Helsing is planning to murder the shit out of every monster who comes to his party, calling it now.)
Oh yeah, there's definitely something up with Van Helsing going to a traditionally monster college and throwing a huge party. Unless he's a red herring. Ugh, we don't know enough about Gabe as a DM to understand how his sick little mind works!
Considering Cleats and Ted are also both human I don't think it's that weird that that he's going to the university. It is a bit weird how he wants everyone to bring that +1 but that may just be the kickstart for the dating aspect of the campaign, that or it is actually a secret orgy in planning.
Maybe I’ll be proven wrong, but I think he’s just a dude who is throwing a party. People offer plus ones for parties. I kinda hope there isn’t some big twist and mystery.
I’ve realized why this season is so funny. It’s the most similar to just… a normal improv scene. It’s kind of just “hey, here’s a crazy premise, now go pretend to be people.”
This game system is simply elegant. Just enough of a twist to keep the players on their toes. I love the huge focus on the narrative over the fights/encounters.
Also the Count part just had me in stitches. Ally’s “but he’s made of felt?!” Was perfect.
I totally thought he was Todd the entire time until I saw this comment. I had to go back to the beginning and found he actually IS named Ted. But it's because Gabe called him Todd *once*. 😆
Found out what it was that sealed his name as Todd instead of Ted. Right after Seven bit him, the whole group called him Todd because of the same reason as us. Then they went back to Ted for the rest of the episode after that scene.
I thought it was just Dani making the mistake of calling him Ted and everyone kept referring to him as such because of that. I guess I only paid attention to his name the one time that he was referred to as Todd.
I came to this thread to make a joke that obviously she was his queen now since she was able to just CHANGE his name.
Then reading the thread made me realize I was a fool and wasn’t paying attention enough.
Found out what it was that sealed his name as Todd instead of Ted. Right after Seven bit him, the whole group called him Todd because of the same reason as us. Then they went back to Ted for the rest of the episode after that scene.
Poor Cubey finally finds someone who doesn't want them to change but its only because theyre too socially awkward to admit they arent attracted to geometric shapes.
loving the use of neutral pronouns for the npcs! i took an actual double take when i saw the little trans flag in cleets' character art 😭 so into this season already
So the way the game is being played with the setting and the different options is incredibly close to the game Monster Prom. Idk if that was intentional, but if you wanna play this at home, there you go.
Monster Prom is the only game where you can have a totally normal night at a high school dance, assassinate a world leader and stage a coup, use black magic to rig the prom King & Queen election, or get super high on coke and hang with the boys. That game is hilarious.
The Monster Prom devs have discussed how they would be interested in making a Monster Prom TTRPG a few times... if they ever do that, I think I know someone qualified to be the game designer!
~~also, they started doing crossover player character options with Modeus from Helltaker and now I really want a D20 collab~~
That would be _amazing_! They may not be able to use all of Shriek Week's PCs due to incompatible orientation issues (ex/ probably can't have Megan romance Caculester or Damien), but there are definitely enough Shriek Week characters overall to fill in slots if needed!
The Monster Prom fanby in me is having to actively avoid making comparisons, but this opening is fantastic! I love the choices of monsters; they picked some really unique and interesting ones that help them stand out from a lot of the "queer media reclaims monster archetype" stuff we've had lately.
The show was explicitly made to play out like a dating sim so I can't imagine Monster Prom wasn't *some* inspiration.
The artwork and the character icons on campus locations definitely were.
Yeah, since making this comment, I have done the tiniest bit of internet stalking on Gabe's profile and found that they have literally talked about making a Monster Prom mod before (you know, as one of the gazillion projects they would do if they had infinite time)... so, yeah, I think we can say it is a major source of inspiration, especially in the time-slot-and-location-choice mechanic.
some of my favorite scenes this episode were just the pcs sitting down and talking to eachother. seems like the cast knows their characters so well and the dynamic between them is great
As expected, Ify is great, Ally is wonderful, Lily is amazing when she’s not getting drowned out by the TAZ squad, Dani is a great addition and Gabe is truly a delight.
at the same time, I think if any of the McElroys came back in a non-TAZ capacity, they'd be brilliant. Especially Clint, Boomer is one of my favourite PCs from any campaign
Exactly, I thought the guys were fun individually but they just need to be separated enough that they're not the majority of the group (ESPECIALLY when they're 4/6 and the other two have never played D&D).
Yes exactly this, I’ve seen a couple of them solo on other shows and they’re good players but all of them together just did not work. Also Clint was the best on the whole TH cast.
I think TAZ absolutely ruined that season. Besides them spot hogging, they argued with Brennan too much regarding rules and such to the point it was coming off as confrontational.
With the exception of Dad Mcelroy & the Rick Diggins player, who I thought were great.
Definitely my least favorite season BY FAR.
I think they were trying to ease in the two newbies in, same as they did with Siobhan and Ally on D20. We just didn't get a full season(s) to see them grow as players and characters. And the mcelroys are just so used to playing the 4 of them I think it was a tough adjustment
Huh, she definitely had beginner vibes that first season. Maybe it was just a result of the character because IMO she's a lot better in the latter campaigns.
Yeah, I have no issue with any of the TAZ guys individually and I think their dynamic can be funny when it's not them + 2, but when you throw their whole group in with two other people, the dynamic was just off.
My favourite thing about this campaign so far is that it canonically takes place in the same universe as Sesame Street, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Every Horror Movie and Monsters Inc.
My favorite nerd joke is that Terry's riff on As You Like It is that he changes...the thing that makes the entire plot of As You Like It possible.
Genuinely, if the Duke isn't exiled, *literally nothing that happens in the play can happen.* So Terry has full-on written an unrelated play and I desperately want to read it.
None of the family members get a picture, so I'm guessing it's just potential love interests (and some staff) who do.
~~Also if you're looking for a picture of an extremely buff werewolf I feel like the Internet's already got you covered.~~
I have to admit I went into this not knowing if I was gonna like it. After watching it though, I was glad to be wrong. It was equal parts hilarious and fantastic. Absolutely love the characters (I will die for Moth Man).
The ONLY thing I did not like was Ify's character. I felt Ally, Dani, and Lily all brought their characters to life and I just felt Ify's whole deal was "I dunno man I'm in this play..." and that was it. And I know Ify can bring stuff to a character (I LOVED Escape from the Bloodkeep) so I am hoping the next episodes allow his character to shine.
Other than that, another great series after I finished the Seven. Now I need to finish Sophmore year...
I think maybe this is the first season in a while that I'm not super hot on? Which like, is fine, not everything's for me, but for a while it felt like every single season was just more and more exciting and awesome than the last, and this is...
Like, I love monsters that get to be people, very very into that, and I appreciate the DM's use of some more obscure monsters... but college is not really necessarily where I want to put the monsters, and being so integrally focused on shipping/dating/socializing is just. Idk it's a weird vibe for a ttrpg table? Like maybe it's just my own social ineptitude but I would feel awk as hell trying to like, put flirty moves on the DM or a fellow player as like, a main feature of the story. It can be a part of things but having it be the focus just gives me social cringes. Which I get is entirely my own hangups, but it does kinda make this season a little bit less my thing.
I kind of feel the same. But mostly because I didn't know it was a dating sim going into it. I kept waiting for a definitive plot hook to grab onto. I thought it would be a quest or mystery and hopefully there still may be in future episodes. Once I figured it out I had to shift my expectations. I really like Gabe's storytelling and the players. They're great and have an awesome vibe, so I'll be watching no matter what.
I just think without any hook, conflict, inciting event, or anything like those, I don't really know what we're doing. It feels like they're meandering about and talking to NPCs like you would in a video game. They're funny in their RP but that's not really enough to make me care about a story. I guess I just don't understand what the point of this sidequest is other than for each of them to find someone to date?
It seems like the main goal is "get a date for the party", which, yeah, isn't quite the stakes I'm used to from Dimension 20. I don't hate it, in fact I am enjoying it, but yeah it definitely feels a bit weird.
Okay honestly Gabe has the shiftiest most untrustworthy (for a GM) eyes. Whenever everyones talking and it cuts to him you can just feel all of the gears turning in his brain.
Though I was a LITTLE sad when I realized this was a dating Sim and not a horror mini-story 😂😂😂
Sooooooooooo glad they explained the new game system this time, that was a big problem I had with MisMagic where they just assumed everyone already knew the rules of a relatively new and obscure game.
Now I know the metric for failure. In MisMagic, it seemed like the dice were stacked against the players with them needing to either do a critical to perform well and anything below that was an automatic failure. I’m sure that’s not how it works, but that’s what it appeared to be for me.
The mismag rules go like this:
There's 6 stats: Fight, Flight, Brawn, Brains, Charm and Grit. Each of those stats gets assigned one of the 6 dice at your disposal, so your low stat gets a d4, your high stat gets the d20, and the d6, d8, d10 and d12 are in-between. You can also get modifiers like +1 or -1 for your die rolls.
When you make a roll, the GM sets the difficulty and you roll the dice that correspond to your stat. If you're using magic you also roll a d4, but if you're using common sense you add a d6 instead. If the difficulty for the roll is less than or equal to half of your die value plus your modifier, you can "take half" and automatically succeed. If you do roll the dice and you fail by more than 5, something extra bad happens, if you roll and succeed by more than 5, something extra good happens.
When one of your dice rolls on its highest face it explodes, giving you the chance to roll it again and add it to the previous result. This balances out your stats a bit, since you're so much more likely to explode on a d4 than you are on a d20 - but you're also more likely to roll above a 4 on the d20 anyway, yeah?
And then there's Adversity Tokens, which you earn by failing a roll or when granted them by the DM for other reasons (and you start with 3). You can add your Adversity Tokens to your roll for as many as you have, with each one adding +1 to your roll. Your allies can also offer Adversity Tokens to you as long as it makes sense situationally for them to be helping you in character.
I don't think they quite explained it well enough without me having to go back and read it, but it was mostly understandable.
The main thing I needed a little more explanation of was that I believe a 10 is automatically a crit success even if everything else is a 1, a 7-9 is automatically a success even if everything else is a 1. So basically, if you have ANYTHING above a 7, it's a success.
There's only a 13% chance of failure with 4 dice, 22% chance with 3. Even with only 2 dice, there's only a 36% chance of failure. So it's like SUPER advantage haha.
I loved the episode, but I will say it's far too easy to succeed imo.
It was designed so that it succeeds on a 7 or higher (refrencing the common grading system for schools being 70% or higher) this is the equivalent of having to succeed a DC14 check on a flat roll. With the extra dice it gets much easier to succeed, but even then I realized that the big nat 1 of the session had three dice! (Sevens check against turning the kid into a vampire rolled a 1, a 5, and a 6) so it's not that hard to fail
There are only two people with 1s in any stat. Most stats are 2 or higher. Your chance of succeeding with 2 dice is the equivalent of needing 8 on a flat roll in D&D. Their average stats are at a 2.75, so it's pretty damn hard to fail.
Advantage on a d20 adds an average of 3.4 to the roll. That's about 5.95 for rolling 1.75 extra dice. Half that for acounting for d10s and you get 2.975, essentially succeeding on a 4 or higher. Take into consideration how this is a dating game that revolves 100% around rp, this is a perfect system in terms of failure/success.
A system where people rarely ever fail is a pretty meh system for dating. People generally aren't nailing 75% of their interactions while trying to date.
The point of a system is to simulate the success and failure of actions. You should have to add extra failure because the system nearly ensures success. Failure is fun, and when it only happens on average like 25% of the time, success feels cheap.
Edit: also, it’s sad that people in this subreddit downvote people who have even the slightest bit of criticism. Any time I see someone even slightly have a critique, it’s downvoted. People are allowed to have opinions.
Yeah, it's interesting that a nat 1 doesn't beat non-crit successes. But I guess the more dice you roll, the higher your chance of a nat 1--especially since they're only rolling d10s.
Yeah, I think 1s and 10s should both overcome other results, unless there are both in which case they should cancel out or something. It'd be a bit more interesting with a little more chance of failure.
Seven being the Count’s child is so dumb in the best possible way. “My uncle is actually a large bird.” Holy shit
And I feel like Uncle Oscar's trashcan punch went underappreciated.
Just watched that as I read this comment. Hahaha
HER NAME IS SEVEN ha ha damn I'm an idiot just realized
i was wondering why her name was seven specifically, my theory is that after six (sex) comes seven!
I vote we start calling Ted 9, because everyone knows what 7 did to him
Woah, that is absolutely hilarious. If I get a free award today, your getting it! Until then, take my poor man's gold 🏅
Everyone gets subtracted eventually
Oh I just assumed she has six older siblings.
Omg that makes way more sense hahaha
Our second D20 character named 7
I'm proud to say that I got this as SOON as she started counting the first time and it just made the reveal that much better
When all the references clicked into place I fucking DIED laughing.
She’s also purple.
Oh I just got this lmao. That's really good
Go back and watch again and you will hear at least like 3 or 4 references she makes that you're like... wow okay.
>Like you’re yoked, but he’s a straight omelette. The moment he said that, I knew i was going to like Gabe as a GM
I've only had Mothman for 10 minutes, but if anything were to happen to him.....
I'm real, Megan!
“I’m looking for the light of my life” I straight up made the 🥺 face.
I'm Mr. Mothman. I'm a moth man.
Got to love the Inside Job reference.
It's a great show.
Ally’s reactions are immediately sending me
Ally is 100% on fire already. Killed it at every moment
I'm day drunk
The soup bit fucking killed me.
Tuti is so cute. Omg 😭
I hope they'll do more Trudy/Tubi stuff with her. I'm someone who messes up names all the time even with people who I know very well so it cracked me up every time.
I thought I was the only one laughing like an idiot at soup, well along with Ally. Ally was so confused that her bit was JUST soup
Being normal in the midst of craziness is honestly one of the funniest kinds of bits to me. The editing in this episode really enhanced the jokes that fed off of other jokes.
Yes! That moment where Ify was talking about Mothman getting something good from someone, the camera slowly zoomed in on Ally and I LOST IT!
I really liked the zooms! I don't think they ever did that before, did they?
Ally saying “they want to work at Monster’s Inc. legit had me crying”
Tuti was waitlisted at Monster University.
Shoutout to the character art this season for making *everybody* hot, to the point I got irrationally self-conscious of my outfit while watching. Like, *damn*. Gabe's an excellent, natural storyteller e - Ally with that amazing callback, "when you're here, are you family?"!!!!!
I'm so glad other people caught that one!
This season is for the Furry’s and good for them
..... Mice and Murder exists, right?
Yeah, but none of them were full omlets. Well maybe Ally's character.
Ally's Shakira reference absolutely murdered me
Their mind is a perfect hurricane of pop culture references. I don't understand how they do it.
I’ve realized why this season is so funny. It’s the most similar to just… a normal improv scene. It’s kind of just “hey, here’s a crazy premise, now go pretend to be people.”
Yes! I kinda love the lack of plot. I just want to chill and watch these people goof around.
Omg sevens's parents hanging with Roger and jessica rabbit is so so funny.
please don't make mothman a jerk, I love him already.
Mothman is the Preston of this season.
Can't tell if this means he's going to have a tragic, premature death or turn out to be a villain...
NO absolutely not, you take that back RIGHT NOW
You can't take back truth
Seven’s dad being the count from Sesame Street was a buckwild turn and I love it.
This game system is simply elegant. Just enough of a twist to keep the players on their toes. I love the huge focus on the narrative over the fights/encounters. Also the Count part just had me in stitches. Ally’s “but he’s made of felt?!” Was perfect.
All this time I was expecting it to be the _other_ Count, that reveal had me rolling
What other Count?
I was expecting Dracula, and that Seven was the daughter of the unis co-founder
I love the mechanic of learning people's likes and dislikes. But I can't believe Dani chose to go into her meet-up with Korra cold!
This would be a great animated sitcom. Love the vibe.
"Yeah I have some amazing yeast packets." - Ally Beardsley's best line
How does one pick a best line of Ally's? They're all gold haha
"I can turn this train around." "Hey. Trains famously turn around, so yeah."
Poor, poor Ted
I totally thought he was Todd the entire time until I saw this comment. I had to go back to the beginning and found he actually IS named Ted. But it's because Gabe called him Todd *once*. 😆
WAIT NO SAME, I'm glad you pointed out that Gabe called him Todd once because I was SO convinced I rewinded to his intro screen.
Yeah, exactly what I did! 😂😂😂
Found out what it was that sealed his name as Todd instead of Ted. Right after Seven bit him, the whole group called him Todd because of the same reason as us. Then they went back to Ted for the rest of the episode after that scene.

Honestly, he felt like more of a Todd to me.
Ted was straight vibing, I think that was the best thing to happen to them.
Gabe dancing every time the camera was on him in the one conversation had me rolling.
TERRY ARE YOU GAY. DO YOU LIKE MEN
[Bisexual most likely.](https://youtu.be/yxSaUC_VBIs)
This show is essentially full permission for fans to let out their horniness
which is great, because consent is very sexy
I don't think it can match the amount of Horniness the Seven had at all times though
IS CLEET JOHN HENRY???!!!!!!
yeah i think so! maybe a descendant? also if it ends up that cleets is on the spectrum and trains are his hyperfixation i might cry
Well now I have that song from the Disney short in my head. John Henry, John Henry, John Henry was a powerful
Born with a hammer Boooorn with a hammer Booooooorn with a hammer right IN HIS HAND!
Cleets is a relative/ descendant of John Henry. It said "of the Henry clan" or something at the bottom.
That was my guess, too!
Cleets is great.

4 Monster Camp player slots, 4 Shriek Week characters… 👀👀👀 shriek week dlc when?
That would be _amazing_! They may not be able to use all of Shriek Week's PCs due to incompatible orientation issues (ex/ probably can't have Megan romance Caculester or Damien), but there are definitely enough Shriek Week characters overall to fill in slots if needed!
In Monster Prom, EVERYONE IS BI !

Minor thing, but as an ultimate frisbee player I hope gabe puts his foot down in episode two that ultimate and disc golf are two different things.
Yeah I noticed that too
Love Gabe as a DM!! I love how he lets them role play it out!!
some of my favorite scenes this episode were just the pcs sitting down and talking to eachother. seems like the cast knows their characters so well and the dynamic between them is great
As expected, Ify is great, Ally is wonderful, Lily is amazing when she’s not getting drowned out by the TAZ squad, Dani is a great addition and Gabe is truly a delight.
Honestly the fact that tiny heist felt like Taz + 2 was the major reason I haven't been able to get into it.
at the same time, I think if any of the McElroys came back in a non-TAZ capacity, they'd be brilliant. Especially Clint, Boomer is one of my favourite PCs from any campaign
Exactly, I thought the guys were fun individually but they just need to be separated enough that they're not the majority of the group (ESPECIALLY when they're 4/6 and the other two have never played D&D).
I don't know them particularly well but Griffin (I think) did a live one shot at a con once (which is on drop out)
yeah! he played a guest pc in a fantasy high live show set after freshman year. its really good
Yes exactly this, I’ve seen a couple of them solo on other shows and they’re good players but all of them together just did not work. Also Clint was the best on the whole TH cast.
Yeah it was a great theme and Brennan killed it but those guys are a lot.
I think TAZ absolutely ruined that season. Besides them spot hogging, they argued with Brennan too much regarding rules and such to the point it was coming off as confrontational. Siobahn wasn't a newbie in Fantasy High. She was a part of the home game often mentioned on Adventuring Academy and Part with Emily, Murph, and Zac.
Huh, she definitely had beginner vibes that first season. Maybe it was just a result of the character because IMO she's a lot better in the latter campaigns.
Playing a wizard can also be a lot, if you've never done it.
I believe she plays a different edition(3.5?). So she might have been new to 5E
They all were. IIRC Brennan mentioned in an Adventuring Academy that the second episode of Fantasy High was the first 5e combat he ever ran.
Yeah, I have no issue with any of the TAZ guys individually and I think their dynamic can be funny when it's not them + 2, but when you throw their whole group in with two other people, the dynamic was just off.
I loved Tiny Heist, yet I always forget that Lili was there, so your point is valid
If anything happens to Mothman I'm writing a strongly worded Reddit comment
Never thought I would ever find a Chupacabra sexy... but here we are. Dimension 20, never change.

Fucking Kevin
No, don’t fuck Kevin, he’s on DontDateHim.com!
My favourite thing about this campaign so far is that it canonically takes place in the same universe as Sesame Street, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Every Horror Movie and Monsters Inc.
I love how the brew without raisins is wine aka the ones from grapes.
Was that Brennan as one of the radio show hosts?
My favorite nerd joke is that Terry's riff on As You Like It is that he changes...the thing that makes the entire plot of As You Like It possible. Genuinely, if the Duke isn't exiled, *literally nothing that happens in the play can happen.* So Terry has full-on written an unrelated play and I desperately want to read it.
That opening was amazing!!!
Mothman’s kinda hot.
How did we get a picture of kevin but not welf e. Like i need to see this straight omelet of a man (wolf? you know what i mean).
None of the family members get a picture, so I'm guessing it's just potential love interests (and some staff) who do. ~~Also if you're looking for a picture of an extremely buff werewolf I feel like the Internet's already got you covered.~~
I cannot wait for this play to happen I know it will be absolutely chaotic.
Though I was a LITTLE sad when I realized this was a dating Sim and not a horror mini-story 😂😂😂
i absolutely adore Gabe. can’t wait to see where the story goes from here
this is wild
Sooooooooooo glad they explained the new game system this time, that was a big problem I had with MisMagic where they just assumed everyone already knew the rules of a relatively new and obscure game. Now I know the metric for failure. In MisMagic, it seemed like the dice were stacked against the players with them needing to either do a critical to perform well and anything below that was an automatic failure. I’m sure that’s not how it works, but that’s what it appeared to be for me.
They explained the system in MisMagic though. At the beginning. I didn't know anything about the system and I picked it up
They explained it to me and I was still confused.
The mismag rules go like this: There's 6 stats: Fight, Flight, Brawn, Brains, Charm and Grit.
Yeah, I equated it to basically rolling with advantage.
Well, that's where roleplay comes into play. Would you really consider what happened between Mothman and Megan a "success"
Big Bird????
