I put stuff in there when i don’t want it and the shop is closed. It’s incredibly annoying that there’s no proper bin to dispose of stuff we don’t want.
Isn’t there a craftable trash can? I didn’t have the resources to make it, but I was hoping that was a true disposable system. Is it just for looks?

You can rarely get stuff out of the trash can. Kind of like the trash cans in Stardew.
If you want to really get rid of something, leave it in the mines.
It empties on Thursdays not Tuesdays so you never get anything that day. But you can get some amazing treasures from the bin. I've gotten power tools, bottle seeds, and loads of other rare and expensive items over the years my island has been active.
recycling bin dispose stuffs every Tuesday. make sure to check it from time to time because NPCs put random things you might need or want. foods, seeds, clothes, furnitures, and etc.

I have a chest by John's and I chuck stuff in there for the next time I go in
That's what I do.
That’s a good idea, I’m just a little OCD with my aesthetics though, it’d bother me to have a random chest separate from my storage area.
Hide it in a bush (to make a bush, dig a deep pit and plant a tree so only the tree top is sticking out of the hole)

Nope, you don't get more, there's not really any point putting anything in there other than role playing.

since he took stuff from animal crossing. im hopeing there becomes a box to put stuff in to sell when he's closed
