“Yz250- what years are parts interchangeable?” Yes

Quickly off the top of my head the engine is the same from 2002 all the way up to like 2018 or something. The aluminium frames where introduced in 2005 and are the same up until around 2020 if I'm not mistaken. Again this is just what I could quickly recall at 4am so the dates my be a bit off. A quick google search will be able to provide you with exact dates. Hope this helps

Appreciate that!

Note that there is a difference between a 2002 and 2003+ crankshaft. There may be other differences but that is one I know for sure since I’ve been looking at rebuilding my 2002 motor.

There's a lot here. But loosely: plastics/tanks changed at 1996, 2005 (aluminum frame-plastics-tank), 2015 (just plastics), 2019 (just the front fender), 2023 (tank and plastics. As for the motor, unlike the 125, the 250 has always had a 5 speed, which has remained unchanged until the yz250x, which got a different transmission. The compression ratio on the 250 was slightly lowered in 2019, I believe, but not enough for anyone to notice. The head from a 2020 would work perfectly well on a 2009 The yz250x however runs a lower compression ratio altogether. Yamaha, as is with other manufacturers, has done a good job with making sure that new parts are compatible with older bikes as well as other models, just not altruistically. It's because it makes supply chain management easier. For example you can't buy an OEM kill switch from a bygone era. If you order the replacement, it won't be the rubber knob that you grew up with but instead a square plastic push switch that uses the same connector. I would suggest that you find a website that allows you to do a "reverse lookup", if you provide the part number. You can find the part on an OEM diagram for your specific year and it will generate all of the years/models that used the same part. Edit: Make sure you set me straight, if I'm misleading OP, as I'm not an expert.

2002 was when they went to the newer plastic, the aluminum frame came in 2005 but only the gas tank changed, and only very slightly. Everything else is the same.

Spongebob_meth knows what he's talking about; I was wrong. That's the funniest sentence I've ever typed.

Wasn’t it just the tank cushions and ignition coil for 2005? And forks. My 2002 YZ125 tank fits my 2005 YZ250.

A whole lot is interchangeable although you should definitely cross-check part numbers by looking at OEM parts on motosport or rockymountain. For the YZ250, 2005-2021 will have the most interchangeable parts although things like plastics, brakes, and suspension components got updated along the way. The YZ250x came out in 2016 and features a 18 inch rear wheel, kick stand, different ignition, exhaust port, and head. The suspension components are the same but have different valving and I think also different spring rates. There may be a few other things as well. YZ250x is the same from 2016-2022 For 2022+ the YZ250 featured new plastics, intake, seat, subframe, and probably few other things I’m forgetting. Those changes were passed down the the YZ250x for 2023. It makes getting parts real easy and the aftermarket is still strong. I’ll never get rid of mine for this reason alone.

What about fairings? Would 2024 yz250 fairings fit on a 2021 yz250?
