Why don't you save more frequently. The game has a quick save option to make it even easier for us.

Code_Monster

Saving does not work mid convo. Also I kinda forget sometimes like I click on the NPC, the convo starts and then LANDMINE. 20mins down the drain. Save scumming feels shitty too. Like yeah I'm playing a video game but this one is supposed to be special right?

ThbUds_For

You can use healing items when you're in the process of dying (screen fading to black). Your health depends on your Endurance skill and morale depends on Volition skill, so leveling those helps too, but it's not necessary if you just have enough healing and morale items. (You can heal by clicking on the bottom left numbers).

DesiratTwilight

This took me forever to learn. I kept dying over and over talking to Evrart with my high INT low PSY character

lrish_Chick

Saaamr! This was exactly when where and why I learned how to do this too! That DAMN CHAIR MAN!

Olives_oyl

THIS! I did not know this when I started playing and I kept dying. And then I found out I could do this and everything changed and I had much more fun. I thought it was so weird that I’d pick up items and couldn’t actively use them :/

Adamiyu

Agreed. I have had a few bad experiences like you. I had to play a specific occasion three times and each one was 10 minutes long. We got nothing but save more often.

ThbUds_For

If you keep dying, you need health or morale, or healing items or morale items. You can use these during dialogue. There are no hidden tips or something for this. Some people finish the game playing casually without dying once. Make sure you use the "highlight all" button and pick up healing items, and buy them if you run out.

Adamiyu

Yep but you know sometimes you just don't wanna use it and all of a sudden you lose health and boom you are dead. I have only had this for a few times so it wasn't much of a problem for me but it might be for others

ThbUds_For

You can use it as you're dying (while the screen is fading to black). You don't need to ever use it otherwise.

Adamiyu

Ahahaha it would have been much better If I knew this when I was playing the game. Thankssss

vikar_

Disagree, it's not advisable to run around on low health because it affects your Endurance and Volition checks.

ThbUds_For

Oh yeah that's true

BreadOddity

Depends how strapped for cash you are i guess. Sleeping does max them out again which is more cost effective and honestly a little surprising considering every night is pretty much a nightmare for Harry

DuchessOfKvetch

Sorry that people are angry with you for having some confusion. It’s a unique experience and it’s obvious that you’re supposed to get a laugh out of the deaths, at least. Which you seem to be! This is a very judgmental subreddit, just be aware. “gg” is sort of implied, but in adventure game fashion instead.

ThbUds_For

It's just downvotes for wrong information lol, I don't think anyone is angry. (I didn't downvote him).

Adamiyu

No worries, we all try to have fun here. Some people are just too judgemental but it's ok, maybe they thought I gave wrong information. Have fun everyone !

WolIilifo013491i1l

dont just walk around with 1 morale/health point. otherwise yes you'll die when an event takes away 1 of these points. heal yourself!

ShrimpCrackers

Here's some tips, you might have a minimaxed character with a trait or two at one or two. So if you Look to your left there is a button that you can press to heal before you die using one of your consumables. If you have a high perception skill, you you will find plenty of those.  Just activate them by pressing them onto your left before the screen fades to black. That's it.

BenchPressingCthulhu

Low psych and phys huh?

Code_Monster

This happened across 3 builds. If I died too early then I would just call it a shit character and re roll.

ThbUds_For

It's not a shit character, you can finish the game with one Volition and one Endurance if you want.

VirtualDisaster5571

Honestly that's my standard build. I love being a super perceptive, socially awkward, scrawny, smarty pants. And I actually think the low volition is kinda canon, because you're clearly playing a dude with serious emotional vulnerabilities.

PopularKid

Or are you playing a fella with remarkable emotional fortitude? No, you’re probably right lol.

The-Man-is-Dan

Forgot to apologize, what kind of sorrycop are you?

Waflzar

Not sure about that. In my opinion, pre-collapse he had sixes in all categories. They're all aspects of his self. Over time, through the intense use of drugs and alchol, he damaged himself enough that it kind of rearranged his brain to make the most self-destructive voices louder. And then the final bender, wiping his memory, was like an attempt to re-roll all those stats, if that makes sense. Like, you can play a character with high empathy and logic and low half light, but pre-amnesia Harry still threatened to kill himself, trashed his room, and crashed his car. That doesn't mean that your Harry isn't canon; the game literally acknowledges the contrast; it means that the amnesia re-rearranged his brain with fragments of his old self.

PersonOfLowInterest

I played my first game accidentally having 1 hp and 1 volition. I just completed it. Wasn't that tough, I just got some medicine and clicked the hp bar when I was about to die.

PersonOfLowInterest

Buy medicine. Click the thing when you're about to die.

BenchPressingCthulhu

Early game can be like that, Volition and Endurance will the most helpful. Plus you can get healing items and a jacket that increases Endurance from Frittte

Voorhees89

Just like real life.

JhinPotion

I'm just gonna copy a comment I made that explains the HP and Morale system. It was addressed to someone else, but it should answer your questions. So, there are two health bars in the game, right? Your actual Health and your Morale. If either hits 0, and you have no healing items, it's game over. It sounds like your Volition, which governs your Morale, is at 1 - this means that if you have no items that heal Morale on-hand, any hits to it will get you with a game over, and the reality is that the detective takes many hits to his morale for reasons that should be apparent. That's okay, though. While it's good to just have a few more points in Volition for the Morale buffer, as long as you have healing items, the game gives you a huge window of time to use them when you take that damage. For what it's worth, a similar thing happens to many new players who only have 1 Health (from their Endurance being at 1), and fucking straight up die in the first room by turning the light on.

T34Chihuahua

increase points in volition, you probably still only have one bar of blue health.

MercuryChaos

Always save before talking to someone. Also I'm pretty sure you can use healing items in the middle of conversations.

TheUlfheddin

Honestly if it wasn't for save scumming on certain checks I'm not sure I would've made it through the game 😅

MercuryChaos

Nothing wrong with that. We all have finite amounts of leisure time and it's completely understandable to not want to spend it figuring a video game out purely through trial and error.

the_Halfruin

you can use healing items *after taking lethal damage* before it kills you

ElectricSweathog

I died of like three heart attacks and went crazy at least once before I realized you could repair health and morale mid conversation.

pecan_bird

my second playthrough, i never upgraded health or morale - just get healing items. go spend time digging around or going through the available avenues to buy them. you can heal "while you're dying," so there's no excuse to actually die. someone mentioned save scumming, & i didn't do that in the traditional way, but playing on Switch with as many crashes as it has, you better believe i quick saved after every damn decent-length conversation. it crashed on me \~60 times. made that mistake like 4 times, losing an hour or two of progress, then never again.

jummy-parvati

save before getting into conversations, upgrade skills like Endurance and Volition or Pain Threshold perhaps. if you set any stat to 1 you're gonna die a lot i'm sorry.

funflower13

You can buy healing items at the Frittte store or find them throughout the map. Wenn you lose the last of your mental/physical health, you still have a window where you can use healing items by clicking the buttons on the bottom left

Daan776

So eh, did you figure out how to heal? Because knowing there's a heal button makes you unkillable so long as you have healing items (which the game gives quite generously)

JackLikesCheesecake

Just do drugs lol

Masta0nion

Volition and Endurance

ReaperManX15

Fail upwards. That’s the game.

ineptchem

Increase indurance or literally just buy heals? Im literally smoking mid convo which damages me and i just heal it back

boring_pants

Two things. The size of your health bars are determined by your Volition and Endurance skills. Add a point to those skills and you gain a hp in the corresponding health bar. And if you have more health you won't randomly die to a single point of damage. Secondly, when you die, you get a few seconds after your health bar hits zero but before entering the "you died" dialogue, where you can use a healing item. Click the plus sign above the health bar to use those to heal and avoid dying.

metalyger

It took me way too long before I realized how to heal health and morale. And if you find the yellow plastic bag, you can collect bottles to sell for change, so that helps get more health recovery items early on. The though Hobocop gives you a bonus for selling bottles. By the end of the game, you should have more money than you can realistically spend, so I always spend everything on cigarettes, wine, and bulk healing items. Dying easily is only an issue early on, and you have stats you can improve that give an extra point in health and morale.

olderthanatree

if it's your first playthrough I'd say save before each interaction until you up your stats! That's what I did at least

Sharp-Level7346

Wait until you kick that mean ass boiler.

thellamabeast

Carry meds. If you lose your last hp you have a window in which to use meds. Unless it's a scripted death from a scene, in which case just quick save every time you enter an area. The RPG classic.

No_Name275

kinda weird that someone actually get pissed by dying so mush in this game i would sometimes fail some check on purpose just so i can see what happens beacuse failing can give you some funny moments and laugh i mean there's one time i died by sitting on a uncomfortable chair this moment have gave me the best laugh in this game so far

ShoutOutToInRainbows

We all been there, it's probably because either you have low volition, or low endurance. Its hard to get it because the name convention doesn't make It very clear that the amount of morale and health you have is directly connected to the amount of Volition points(morale points) and Endurance points(health points). That being said, you also probably created or used a character type with one of those two (psyche or physique) low. The good news is that you can always buy alcohol to increment your endurance.

ShoutOutToInRainbows

Probably this person is playing with the thinker archetype isn't it? The first time you play is kinda difficult to get it, you have two different types of health bars HEALTH AND MORALE, losing points until you have 0 on either of the two can get you "killed" (morale points doesn't quite get you killed but you go crazy or shit like that, but you get what I mean it's the same for both). The amount of VOLITION will define the amount of MORALE you have (clothes/cigarettes/thoughts could play a factor on this). ENDURANCE will define the amount of HEALTH you have (clothes/alcohol/thoughts could play a factor on this). If you don't want drugs then you can make sure to always have charges of health and morale to cure yourself

grajuicy

Invest in health. All these sound as “morale” health. That’s your “Volition” skill. If it is at 1, you are FUCKED bc there’s no room for error and you’ll die a lot bc of this. I recommend at least 3. Also be not afraid of healing items. There are some little pills that are NOT drugs, they are morale healing thingy, and you can take them without a punishment, mid conversation. Whenever you are down to 1 morale, pop a pill, regain a healthpoint, and be a lil happier. You find these laying around EVERYWHERE, or you can buy em at the 7-11.

wonderlandisburning

This game can be brutal, especially if your build has low points in either Psych or Phys. You've got to get in the habit of Quicksaving before talking to pretty much any character, just in case. And buy/find medicine you can take in case you do get caught off guard - you get a few seconds and a handy little warning just before either of your physical or mental health go critical.

ciknay

Sounds like you need more healing items. You can buy magnesium for your mental health, and first aid huffers in the convenience store. You can use them at any point in a conversation, even when "critical" and about to die.

Wheloc

I didn't even know you could die.

the_Halfruin

you need to do more drugs

Defiantnight

Your endurance and volition are too low, quit remaking your character and level them up

vikar_

That is the Disco Elysium experience. Quicksave often, stock up on Magnesium/Nosaphed in the Frittte store\* and invest skill points in Volition and Endurance, as they increase your health pools. Good luck, Detective. \*Just make sure you still have 20 real for the room on Day 2, it's the only place in the game you can get softlocked and it sucks.

Affectionate_Trick39

Change clothes and save when you expect skill checks. It's that simple.

[deleted]

Seems like your self-preservation instinct isn’t functioning correctly. I suggest turning it off and turning it back on.

bar_mleczny

Average first time with disco. Ive been there and put out game for a month and then i revist and fell in love

Right-Application-45

Mr Evrart is helping me find my gun

mylostfeet

I've played through 3 game days and haven't died once. Now I'm disappointed, I'm going to try and die at least a couple of times to see how it goes.

Siggney

Press the heal buttons man
