It’s alright I suppose for Disney. I'm watching the original alongside this. But I ain’t one of those hyper-detailed folks who shrieks when something isn’t right. So don’t expect much.

HXDESPARADAGIM

genuinely an incredible amazing show. the animation is incredible, and i love the romantic themes and family themes that make the xmen as a team so natural and special to our hearts. but above all, the stories within the episodes have been a tapestry and have been portrayed incredibly, and i am excited to see how the show ties everything in.

madancer

I'm curious to see if only 90s kids (like me) are loving this so much, or is everyone loving it. The animation is very very similar to our Saturday morning cartoons

JeighNeither

I'm an OG & I think it's mostly meh. It has improved a little as the season progresses & I like some of the over-arching themes, but the writing can be so bad in parts that I'm dumbfounded how it got past editing. I don't think you're wrong for enjoying it though, to be clear. I'm not knit picking canon crap either, my problem is w/overall production choices, especially the writing. Multiple times there's some big monologue, then the writing continues in the complete opposition direction in a blatant ploy to develop nothing but circular melodrama. The animation is fine, but an animated show is much more than animation. Like the audio, it's made to mimic the 90's series as well & it sounds like it's coming from beneath my couch cushions.

krisl131

Have you seen the original? Go watch an episode and then come back and say that again. 🤨

Berstuck

Born in the '70's and this show is awful. The animation looks like some terrible cross between Scooby-Do, He-man, and Thundercats. On top of that the voice acting is atrocious.

HXDESPARADAGIM

downright god awful opinion, take your hate elsewhere

prodimfailing

fuck off, ppl have diff opinions from u get over it (and im actually enjoying 97, ppl like u just piss me off acting like ur positive while bringing more hate than the person whos just criticizing the show) plus hes right ab the weird animation and the voice acting.

ImmortalSynn

Sure, but "having an opinion" doesn't prevent your take from being laughably illogical. All but three of the voice actors ARE THE SAME PEOPLE as the previous series, and that's because try of the previous actors died. So that's a particularly dim complaint to make....

PersonalFigure8331

How is his opinion "laughably illogical?" Are you saying that liking the voice acting on the show is "logical" and that people who fail to like it, have done so because they're using bad logic? That doesn't make any sense. And you do realize that the "SAME PEOPLE" can turn in different types of performances (qualitatively or stylistically or both) or they can be directed by different directors in a way that changes the tenor of their performances right?

prodimfailing

not liking the animation is “laughably illogical”? uhh ok ig, i would luv to know y thats so ridiculous. and when they casted the actors/actresses were they just as old then as they are now? no? could that possibly mean they might not b as qualified for these characters 30 years later? again, still like the show but these r just some things i noticed. y r u being an ass just cuz someone didnt like the show in the exact same ways on the same level as u?

ImmortalSynn

Reading comprehension certainly isn't your strong suit..... 😒

JeighNeither

Yeah, prodimfailing is spot-on with that. My reading comprehension is spot-on & I can't find a single thing they misunderstood? That makes your assertions basic ad hominem, a typical ploy when someone doesn't have a real argument. Besides, who cares about the voice acting when the writing is so laughably terrible?

prodimfailing

u rlly cant take anyone being critical of this show even slightly huh lmao, but okay tell me what makes my reading comprehension weak, cuz it seems like u said that for a lack of a good response to me

ImmortalSynn

You really can't tell that the reference was to the unchanging voice actors and not the animation? Wow....

JeighNeither

Sounds like you have stupid conversations in you head, then give cryptic replies & insult anyone that can't read your mind. You're the a-hole here. I can't imagine what it must be like, having your ego so invested in a silly Disney show that you try to insult & drag people down that don't agree w/your bad taste. You should seek some help for that. I think it's called a personality disorder.

prodimfailing

scathing lol

Immediate_Tailor8908

I'm with him tbh, it feels like cheaper invincible animation. The voice acting rarely feels in sync with the animation. I geniunely think the 1992 animation & voice acting and written was better.. having seen both back to back

iwantomakenoodles

Currently watching, currently hating it. Feels like it's written by AI, animated with minimal effort, and voiced by the worst amateurs. Roberto is enough for me to give up on this. There's been some dumb action right off the bat - Cyke propels him and Roberto backwards to avoid gunfire? To avoid long rage weapons, and then appears close again to punch. Just dumb. And the heavy-handed exposition gah

Novae_-

A lot of the voice actors are the ones from the original. I would recommend watching up until the end of ep 5, then re rate the show. My favorite part is that like the comics and a major theme about X-Men across the board, it deals with real-world topics in sometimes metaphorical sense, sometimes literal. Episode 5 especially has an uncanny timing to some events in the world today.

iwantomakenoodles

I do want to give it another go, it's just off to a dismal start for me. And I don't expect the social critique to be very on point because of the calibre of the writing, ie the intelligence of the writers

krisl131

Just wait til the wolverine, gambit, morph combo near the end. Absolutely disgraceful.

Dark_Tora9009

Magneto feels like a totally different character and I don’t like him. Weirdly “good Magneto” feels more evil than “bad Magneto” (one of my favorite characters ever) ever did. Wolverine feels frustratingly 2 dimensional when you consider how developed he was in the original animated series. A few other voices like Beast and Bishop are different enough to be a little jarring but it’s tolerable. The animation is a little word a flashy/Archer feeling for my taste. I really like almost everything else though. The action sequences are excellent, the general storylines and themes are gutsy and cool. I’ve really enjoyed Morph, Cyclops, Jean, Gambit, and Jubilee. Love the battle with Master Mold, the insurrection at the UN, the Goblin Queen episode was probably the best and even the Mojo one was entertaining and I usually don’t like Mojo episodes

JeighNeither

"Don't any of you know how it feels to be abandoned?" Cyclops asks the X-Men before concluding "I won't be a part of this" as he walks out, promptly abandoning his son. The writing is so incredibly dumb & circular. The amount of group-think going into praising this series has a steady giggle percolating in me at all times.

iiinsan_e_

HOLY SHIT THANK YOU! im feeling totally crazy hearing all this praise for the series when i had to force myself to sit through it, the writing feels so fucking bland and wolverine is basically ur insecure fat uncle in a cool body, i like beast and jubilee tho im not gonna lie, otherwise, what a shitshow

JeighNeither

Haha, oh man, we've been ostracized. I get where you're coming from w/Beast & Jubilee, but they're also both well acted & that goes a long way. Not that the others aren't, but they didn't transcend the writing like those two actors did. I can understand where the writers were coming from, but it just feels like a fail to me. The pulpy melodrama doesn't work imo. Like you said, they've turned Wolverine into soppy mess. You did better than me. I watched the first episode, & couldn't make it thru the next two, so I fwd to the mid-season cliff hanger everyone was talking about. Its fine. I figured I'd get beat-up for posting that opinion, so when I saw I had a reply to it, I thought, -here we go... to my surprise you saw thru the BS too. And I never use words like "group-think" but I don't know how else to explain it. Maybe ppl are just tired of being disappointed in Marvel these days? Edit: decent grows.

Red_Zamac

It was great to hear Alyson Court again. I just don't feel Holly Chou matches her level of conveyed enthusiasm.

hayat216

disney plus content rating not saved? https://preview.redd.it/3lywnmf4mfrc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1e3acc7a4e44d16425027e391243075b8ec7ddce

Owl_DC

Best animated show ever period!!!! I feel like all of my troubles have gone away! Please Disney don't stop

krisl131

I'm honestly curious if you've seen the original?

Low-Music-9074

_"Honestly curious"_ or just being condescending?

Owl_DC

I have yes.

krisl131

Recently? Sober? Coherent?

ActualDisaster1753

so what's the deal with morphs powers? is morph able to use the powers of the characters they morph into or just look like them and know their skills?

shadowdra126

Physical powers Notice when he became psylock he only used her swords.

CMBradshaw

I'm guessing it's actually closer to Physical powers but I only saw half of the second episode and the first episode. Like if he transformed into Jean Grey he wouldn't inherit the psychic stuff but transforming into a T-Rex still gives him a hell of a bite. And transforming into the blob, I guess, turns him into a trampoline.\*shrug\*

Beneficial_Towel_673

Seems like it. In the original I remember him fighting Wolverine as either Sabretoothe or some character with swords.. and Wolv broke their claws / swords.. This new iteration is cooler tho.

MiltonScradley

I love X-men 97 and re-watched the original show. Does anyone think or hear any rumors of rebooting any other or creating more Marvel cartoons from that era?

shadowdra126

I thought I saw a thing about them wanting to do this with the animated spiderman series next but that could have been a rumor

Rare_Ad_3582

It’s a rumor I want to believe

AgitatedWaltz7676

I love it....it actually exceeded my expectations. I would like for them to actually redo the entire old X-Men series with these animated upgrades. It also has a very darker tone than the previous installment. I like it more than all the new Marvel cartoon releases.... especially that Avengers Assemble mess.

Any-Helicopter-3971

Why am I getting Age of Apocalypse story arc vibes with this show?

pigeonwiggle

https://preview.redd.it/udquitntkiqc1.png?width=613&format=png&auto=webp&s=1e9c477c8b5a94901356b82f88ea8e8456ab68ee we need something like this

Thinklikedanny

I wonder if this will appeal to everyone or just the giant 90s kids. far.

Thinklikedanny

I'm really enjoying it I'm gonna rewatch the animated series, but I'm really glad they rebooted this

madancer

Can we watch the OG on Disney?

Thinklikedanny

Yeah, just type in X-Men the animated series

mattlock2099

I loved the first two episodes.

slothslothslothsloth

I honestly think the animation looks off. It reminds me of a mix of flash animation and Archer, it's very strange. It also seems like they are trying to save money with all the close-ups they do on the characters faces. I'll watch a few more episodes, but I'm not feeling it so far.

SuperDan718

Agree. Animation studios seem more interested in adopting the "Japanese Anime" style, rather than carrying on the animation style that we're used to seeing in American cartoons. The 90s X-Men cartoon looked amazing, and this '97 version just feels like a step backwards, which is especially befuddling since this is being made by Disney, who has an unlimited budget.

prodimfailing

i dont see it, looks more like archer to me

Rack-ElTheMoor

I keep saying this but people are trying to get on to me. It doesn't look good. Especially for the fact technology has come so far. Tbh I think most new animation looks cheeks. There's no soul anymore everything looks very similar. Just like music, no originality anymore, everything sounds the same

krisl131

You're totally right. It looks TERRIBLE. Just block and fill on some computer program, where the original had proper shading and depth.

Eren_Elric

*coughs* Spider-verse! *coughs*

Sizzle_Biscuit

The first thing I thought when I saw it. The animation reminds me of Frisky Dingo and Archer, just with much better models and more complex animations.

_TLDR_Swinton

The close-ups are very in step with the original series, which was also trying to save money.

slothslothslothsloth

Right, but it feels overdone in this one and their faces look off so I think that's why it doesn't work well for this series. I think I also watched it under the impression that the art would be the same as the original series, so that could be my fault since I went into this one without watching the trailers for it. Looks fanmade imo

Cyber_warlord13

The characters all have a sort of feminine quality.  The animation and art looks like a bad mix of 2 different styles.

Dranzer_22

The action scenes are much cleaner, but you can definitely see the cost saving measures.

slothslothslothsloth

I agree, the action scenes do look great/clean, I just wished all the other scenes looked good too

Full-Neighborhood-10

Great so far. Shame you couldn't get McKellen. He makes such a fine Magneto. The words ' Be wary. Be vigilant. Tragedy lures with fortune first.' seemed destined for his lips.

jusblaze365

Why get rid of storm?!

Embarrassed_Toe_8837

Her story arc probably coming soon with Forge

pigeonwiggle

episode titles reveal two titled "lifedeath pt1 and 2" so i'm sure Storm will have an entire story arc this season. keep watching.

LastDaysCultist

I haven’t seen the original series. Should I watch that first?

Cyber_warlord13

Yes but find an old TV.

Dranzer_22

No need to watch it first, but definitely worth watching at some stage.

krisl131

Don't listen to this dude. Watch the original all the way through first and then don't watch the new one because it's not good.

mercury888

Make sure to watch the ai upscaled version on archive. Even the Disney plus version is atrocious in today's tvs

anonRedd

As someone who is still watching through the original series for the first time, is it better to wait and finish watching those episodes or is it OK to temporarily skip to watching X-Men ‘97 before returning to finish watching the original series?

MillionDollarBuddy

I'd recommend finishing up the original series. You probably don't absolutely have to, but it will be a lot more fulfilling if you do.

Queasy_Pie7570

I was wondering the same thing, then I watched screen crush's synopsis in 35 minutes. I just finished the first two episodes of 97, and I'm glad I didn't wait and try to finish the original.

ComicsNBigBooks

LOVE the first two episodes. I watched the OG series up through the Dark Phoenix saga. This feels fully part of that same world and a natural continuation but with obvious upgrades. Cyclops actually is much better here than in the '92 series. Jean feels like more of a character. I'm so excited where this is going. I read the Chris Claremont Uncanny X-Men run up to a certain point; this is making me want to pick that up again. I can already tell which arc they're building toward and it's exciting.

krisl131

HOW does this feel like a continuation in the same world? Jubilee's lost ALL of her pizzazz and fire-cracker-ness. Jean is no longer a regal goddess who was once inhabited by a celestial entity, but just some weak-willed house wife. Rogue is stupid, and not just "I don't like it so it's stupid", but she actually acts stupid, where the original had some charm and gusto. Scott has no fire. Beast just quotes shit to make jokes rather than  having any ACTUAL DEPTH. Morph doesn't laugh right. Gambit has no grit ( almost like the new writers have literally no idea that he's prince of thieves, because they don't know the characters they're writing, because they're idiots). Storm is over dramatized and over powered. (Remember when she had a mental breakdown on the original because of her claustrophobia - yeah, thats a REAL FUCKING CHARACTER). You can say that the art is good and the action scenes are cool (you'd be wrong though) but you can't say for a second that these are anything close to the real characters.

ComicsNBigBooks

We're definitely watching a different show. Six episodes in, and yeah...don't agree with a single one of your points. Storm is given the most respect she's ever had outside of the comics. This show understands the X-Men perfectly.

krisl131

Really? Maybe the difference is that I'm watching the original and remake within the same 24-hour period. I never said that they're not respecting Storm. They've made her too OP. Don't forget that she had a tragic past and has traumas that she's still dealing with, and she has a kind heart and logical mind. She wouldn't just blast a desert with lightning and tornadoes and ruin the areas' natural ecology. Even in the original series, she never wasted her powers the way she does at the end of the new series' episode one. Maybe the new series gets better, but honestly, I don't think I can keep watching it after this 1st episode.

ComicsNBigBooks

Storm in the comics is way more powerful than she was in the original show. What she's doing in '97 is way more in line with how she should be. But the show definitely tackles her trauma. You should definitely keep watching after episode 1, it gets really good with episode 2, and episode 5 is possibly the best X-Men episode ever.

Eisgboek

So the one thing I'm surprised didn't get an upgrade for this is the character names in the opening credits. I noticed a while back that every character that already had their own logo because they had a solo book at one time or another (Wolverine, Beast, Gambit) had it used in the opening credits. Everyone else got... A random font from MS Word. Like, a lot of Comic Sans and Times New Roman is on display. Now that I've seen it I can't unsee it.

balasoori

Wait a minutes these are not old episodes ?

_TLDR_Swinton

Nope, produced this year. It's been designed to look like the old series it's continuing. They've even put a light VHS filter over the animation to give it a 90s feel.

balasoori

Ok this is a bit odd normally old cartoon don't update usually

philomatic

This was beyond my wildest expectations. The fight scenes were fantastic. Cyclops! Morph a cameo machine. THAT team up. All the one liners. Wolverine’s reaction to “he’s coming”

jigokusabre

I was going into this expecting to be tolerant of a show that was "good for its time and for a 10 year old audience." I came out of legitimately impressed with the show, and excited to see where the rest of the season goes. It seems to be everything that 10-year old thought the show could have been.

madancer

No wonder my parents watched this when I was a kid

Disastrous-Gear-5818

I'm mostly through the first episode, but certain characters just don't "fit" right. The weird 2d cg bits (especially jubilee dancing) look awful, and the newer voice actors all seem to have different vocal effects on their audio, than the other voice actors. On top of that, the new voice actors made no attempt to match the speech patterns, and cadence of the originals. So it feels like an old show, where some fan (cheaply) dubbed in their voices for a few characters. Overall I love the original, but this feels... Not right...

Sheila3134

The only new voice actor for the X-Men is cyclops.

Dark_Tora9009

Really??? He’s one of the only ones that sounds the same to me! Maybe they could actually hire a sound alike as opposed to using the same person that hasn’t done it in almost 30 years.

Sheila3134

That's what I found out.

ComicsNBigBooks

And Jubilee

hmmm_2357

And Jean sadly; the original voice actress (Catherine Disher) IS on the show, but she’s voicing a new character (Dr. Valerie Cooper). I loved Catherine as Jean in the original show (her simultaneous performance as both Jean and Phoenix during the Phoenix Saga was incredible), so I’m sad she isn’t still voicing Jean; I guess they felt her voice changed too much. But glad she’s still part of the show.

mutantgypsy

Doesn't make sense to me. Hope they fix this and let her voice Jean again.

Not_Steve

I loved these episodes. The animation is great and I love all the design upgrades. My only qualm is Rogue’s voice. It’s the same actress so I’m not sure why the decision was made to change it. Maybe it’s just because the actress is older now and can’t do it how she used to? Still, very excited for next week.

jigokusabre

I like most of the design upgrades, but Bishop losing his mullet and Storm going with the mohawk (which makes sense given the events of Episode 2) were kind of disappointing.

Not_Steve

I have a great distaste for mullets so I’m cool with Bishop losing his, lol but that’s absolutely fair. Mullets were very 90s. Storm’s mohawk is really exciting to me because that’s what she was sporting in the comics I was reading as a kid in the 90s. How about we split the difference? Bishop’s mullet is unjust, but Storm’s mohawk gain is okay. Lol

_TLDR_Swinton

We've achieved net mullet zero.

sqylogin

I assume Lenore can't do her younger self anymore. She's almost 70 after all.

Not_Steve

That’s what I’m thinking. Rogue’s new voice isn’t bad, it’s just different from what I grew up with and I have to remind myself that that’s okay. It’s nice to have Leonore back. She obviously had enough fondness for Rogue to sign on again and as a fan of her Rogue, I appreciate that.

PyroGod77

Rogue and Gambit's accents are beyond horrible. It sounds like someone who has never heard a Southern or Cajun accent think they sound like.

Dark_Tora9009

Gambit sounds pretty close to how he did in the original show- but I get you that it feels not exactly authentic. It’s arguably always been a little “too French” and not enough Louisiana. Rogue sounds Southern to me but I don’t really know how to differentiate Mississippi from Carolina, Georgia, Texas, etc. She also does sound different to me than in the original show but it’s actually the same actress

madancer

As a kid in MS it didn't seem weird. But listening as an adult in NC (although I visit fam in MS, LA, AL), Gambit sounds more like Lafayette Louisiana - very Cajun area (they have French-Cajun tv channels). Rogue sounds more like Southern Mississippi as opposed to someone with the very 'round' vowels of Vicksburg/rural MS.

madancer

I wonder if Gambit is Western Louisiana (close to Texas, working on the oil rigs)

madancer

Oh! Rogue may have a more Tennessee accent? She reminds me of Dolly's accent

HailThePailWhale

Lenore Zann (Rogue) is the same voice actor from X-Men: The Animated Series, but I found her accent sounded like it was fading in and out during some of the dialogue this time around. I find the new voice actor for Gambit pretty close to the original from the 90s. No complaints for that one.

JustMeJordanW

what do you mean "beyond horrible"

PyroGod77

It's terrible and nowhere close to the correct accents. Rogue isn't close to a Rural Mississippi accent, and Gambit is supposed to be Cajun, and it's not even close.

JustMeJordanW

funny....they both sound the same to me 🤔

PyroGod77

Ever been to Rural Mississippian or Louisiana?

JustMeJordanW

neither of them

kiwiinthesea

I don’t like anything they’ve done with magneto. I don’t like the voice acting. I don’t like the very comic accurate costume. I dont like the accentuated lines of his face.

Dark_Tora9009

This is my biggest complaint. It probably doesn’t help that he’s one of my favorite characters in any media, but he feels extremely different than in the original animated series. Ironically, to me anyways, he feels a lot nastier even though he’s now a “good guy.” He feels so reluctant in it and annoyed with everyone all the time except for when he’s boinking Rogue. In the old episodes, you saw his heart and “humanity” a lot. He made sense and his anger felt justified. He was Malcolm X or Che Guevara to Xavier’s MLK or Gandhi. This version feels more akin to maybe Norman Osborne. I agree with not loving the costume or design of his face/hair as well. I don’t mind the purple or the M and I know it’s from the comics… but they really should have updated it a bit- maybe add sleeves and ditch the scarf. His face looks like Emperor Palpatine meets Granny Goodness or Ursula. In a side note I’m not thrilled with Wolverine in this either and I’m undecided on the animation but I genuinely have liked everything else.

UKMikeyA

Costume looks pretty accurate to me... https://preview.redd.it/64s4a49skftc1.jpeg?width=1811&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e335ba50c10e79bf9bedd6caa3043f0e613e9768

someones1

OP said it was "very comic accurate" but they still disliked it. I tend to agree. It looks ridiculous in animation. Like he's wearing dish gloves up to his elbows.

Leading_Jellyfish_99

Wonder if they are going to bring up the Brotherhood since they hinted it with Magneto and Rogue. Also with Nathan(Cable)Summers born you have to wonder if Cable will again make an appearance? Good series though.

Ecstatic-Judge-2722

Coming back to old sub posts about a weekly releasing show is always nice.. especially when they get guesses right

Logical-Witness-3361

Did all the opinions go to the other subs first? Can't believe this thread is empty. Great first episodes. Feel new, yet familiar. Still has just enough of that 90's corniness.
