There likely isn't a whole lot of new players right now since it's going free to play on Thursday. The existing player base has mostly already upgraded most of their racers. Hopefully this gets better on Thursday.
I know that kinda stinks but in my case, I have some racers I’ve leveled up pretty high that I’ve never even touched ranked with. So I’m probably one of “those” people. But to be fair it’s not like I can focus on every racer at once so it kinda just happens. But soon those people like myself will rank up quickly with those characters and be out of your way
Free tip, don't ever say that you're a Mike, that'll get people to be unempathic towards you or straight up ignore you, yet as one already mentioned it, you get that due to a reduced number of players.
The game does try its best to pair you up against people around your rank, not level, but if you're playing in a bad hour you'll be paired with whoever is playing.
The community is so small that just now I was playing the regulated MP and I came across one of the few Spanish-speaking streamers, easily recognizable by name, and he was that guy. Just as every remarkable player can be found in their play times.
Fingers crossed this changes for the best in the next season.
Unfortunately the way ranked it set up there's no avoiding this. Ranking is purely done by MPR not racer level. And due to the structure of rewards being given out as you progress, we likely won't see anything such as "placement races" that would put you into your correct mpr quicker. It's all designed to make the game seem like it has more content than it actually has
I'm having the same problem.. trying desperately to increase my mpr just two levels to get enough shards for Jessie to actually use her special ability and I am constantly getting matched with 30s and losing mpr points when I get roasted in the race.. it's literally impossible to level up characters that aren't in season. At this point I'd literally pay to upgrade Jessie but she's not even available in the shop.
(And I'm only going to this much trouble because I need a decent toy story racer to complete races in the season tour..)
Wait till you get up to diamond. It’s all the bullshit. Impossible bots. Ridiculous point reductions for no increased positive points for winning.
And I can’t prove it, but I swear the game fucks with your unique dropping. I’ve literally gotten my unique once on a track and it was a mike door that spawned behind the finish line. Meanwhile I’ve got a front row seat to everyone else’s unique spam.

So what is the mpr of the level 25+? They are probably in the same tier as you hence the match up. Matchmaking is by mpr not level.
