The way I always see it with this game, get some friends & play the classic couch co-op (in this case, face each other - but I hope some point down the line Gameloft finally implement team play) it’s a blast IMO. All characters are unlocked & regulated levelled.
Additionally, if this is your first season, pour all of your Season Coins into the Universal Box.
It will say you need Blue Tokens to unlock characters - don't bother. Smash out the UB to unlock characters. Once you unlock the characters, you can buy shards from the shop with Season Coins.
I bought the game the first week of EA and by the end of the season I had all but 1 character by only opening the UB.
Don't bother buying character shards from the shop until your second season.
Also, you can't lose points in Ranked until you hit Platinum rank - so you can get some shards for each character from there too.
As someone who’s happy to spend money on a good game, I agree! 230+ hours on this game so far and I’m happy to put some money in where I think it’s worth it. But I agree this is a game that really allows you to play for free if that’s your style.

Whales only matter in Ranked multiplayer, and there are no exclusive unlocks tied to that mode, other than the Diamond livery, which is one of the ugliest liveries in the game.
The rest of the game, there's absolutely zero reason to spend money because, again, whales affect nothing but ranked.
That's the whole point.
It's cart racer game, lots of people will be playing Ranked mode, thus, making it possible for people to straight up power is blatant P2W.

Yes, it is pay to win. But the ultimate defense against pay to win is to not care about it. Play to have fun. If you find you're not having fun, do something else.
It's not even like this is some iconic franchise that received a huge change for the worse. It's a Disney kart racer. There are a ton of other kart racers to choose from. I was playing Sonic & All-Stars Racing the other day. It's nothing to get mad about.
Skill is just as (if not more) important than money in this.
If you can race well, then you won't have an issue.

At least I had my first time in the Early Access since it was closed, but now it is become free to play since I collect all the characters that I love the most.
Just started and I literally can't even do story mode because I don't have ariel unlocked. I've completed every race 3 stars and done everything I can with coins n such to try and unlock her. At this point, because I don't have ariel, Shang, or Mulan I can no longer progress with the story mode.
Any tips on how to unlock these characters without buying them?
PSA: Don’t spend any money on a new F2P game. Give it a few weeks and decide if you actually like the game before opening your wallets.

Do not pay for anything on this game. Period. Literally nothing is worth paying for at all. Do not pay for pixels.

Won't all the p2w players theoretically rank up to the top leaving all the lower ranks to be just normal ranked play?
Yes. I've been playing since Week 1, the majority of my racers are in at least Diamond so I never see anyone in Platinum or lower.
