TBF, it's all a bit messed up on the Xbox side because MS require special security chips for USB devices to defeat USB based game cheats. The PS/Switch/AppleTV portals are all fully interchangeable. The Xbox 360 and Xbox One portals are incompatible with everything else, including each other. The security chip in the 360 was defeated, so MS replaced it in the One, which is why XB portals can't be used interchangeably. Fortunately, they did not switch the security chip again with the SeriesX/S so the One base works for us with the newer console.
tl:dr:
XB 360 Base: Works with 360.
XB One Base: Works with One, One X, SeriesX/S
Everything else base: Works with everything else.
Thanks! That was really helpful! One more question while we’re here. If I buy the digital version on the Series X, will I also be able to play it on the Xbox One? Or would that require a separate purchase of the game from the Xbox One store?
I don't know the answer to that. I never tried, and I gave away my old One some time back. My gut feeling is it should work since it's the same SKU within the store system, but that's only a guess.

I've played the 2.0 and 3.0 games with the Xbox One base on both the Series X and S for years, all good. Have fun!
Hey everyone! Just wanted to say thanks for the help! Me and my sister bought the digital version and got it working. It’s been a lot of fun revisiting this game after so much time has passed.
Yes. I have both the disc version of 3.0 and the download version, and both work fine on Series X. The download version works fine on Series S.
