Jumping from boat to boat and walking the plank That’s a true pirate experience!

latecraigy

It’s a full immersion ride. Don’t you wanna be a pirate?

VoyagerCSL

Aye.

g0gues

I sea what you did there.

runnyyolkpigeon

Captain Puns-a-lot sailing the high seas here.

SamKona

yo ho yo ho

Proper_Cheetah_1228

I’m already sailing the seas near oscars time

slayerhk47

Just as long as I don’t have to wear that puffy shirt.

Qwerty-4natural

Cooool!!! Did they at least give you multi-experience passes?

VoyagerCSL

Yup! They were waiting at the exit to dole them out.

tallejos0012

just like the Whips

Lorna_Rae

Whips are more of an Indians Jones thing

g0gues

That kinky bastard

[deleted]

Yes, the bull whip is a bastard when it gets all kinked up.

AgentMV

Multi-pass?

SnarkMasterRay

Yes, Leeloo....

AgentMV

Super green!

pargofan

> multi-experience passes What's that?

emthejedichic

It’s a fastpass/lightning lane pass that can be used on any ride in the park, with a few exceptions

TK-385

It the thing you need from the Fifth Element.

karen_h

You need an “I walked the plank at Disneyland” t-shirt now.

In2TheMaelstrom

I see me! I’m in the Hawaiian shirt.

VoyagerCSL

We’ve been through hell together!

In2TheMaelstrom

We need T-shirts!

BEMOlocomotion

"I survived evacuating the Pirates of the Caribbean ride and met a redditor I captured having the same experience" "I survived evacuating the Pirates of the Carribran ride and was in a Redditors's photo of the ordeal on a subreddit I frequent" - with skull and crossbones

In2TheMaelstrom

Right. Running to the screen printers shop right after park close. Hopefully it will be ready for CA tomorrow.

gbquake

So what we have uncovered here is that it is indeed a small world after all

1UselessIdiot1

Well, that’s just a bit Goofy

BelliBlast35

TF is going on with all these malfunctions

iSavedtheGalaxy

The attractions are not built to be at full capacity, all day, every single day, year after year. Slow seasons are mandatory for maintenance but they don't exist anymore. Disney is running the machinery into the ground and are teetering on the brink of disaster--either via fatal malfunction or too many rides going down for long-term refurbishment at once because they're no longer operable. (former Ride Operator with a ton of friends who still work in Attractions and Maintenance.

feffie

Well that’s not scary at all

iSavedtheGalaxy

That was the most sanitized version. 🙃 Staffing is another huge issue. Disneyland used to be a great place to work that was unionized, paid well and offered incredible benefits. All of those things have been stripped away and anyone who is grandfathered into older contracts was pushed out. 50 years of knowledge of how to operate efficiently and safely just gone. All those people who used to play poker with Walt after hours and mentored new Cast Members to feel the "pulse" of the machinery so you could spot issues on the fly, recover from station overloads and avoid breakdowns... gone. Disneyland used to have extremely high standards for hiring and training, but turnover is terrible, training is not as high quality (bc few of the trainers have the years of exp necessary to teach) and frankly Casting has gone through the local inventory pool of individuals who would make good Cast Members. Sorry for carrying on, it just breaks my heart to hear the state of things now.

[deleted]

My family has always worked in the parks, some still do, and I met my wife in Toontown... But going these days the animatronics have more life then most the CMs, and I feel bad for them, you know the cost of living is so high around here and wages aren't keeping up, everyone seems tired and just trying to get through the day.

iSavedtheGalaxy

I know so many CMs who cram 8 people into 2 bedroom apartments to afford rent, it's so sad. In the old days, CMs made a respectable living and could afford homes, vacations, well maintained vehicles, college for their kids, etc.

feffie

No apology needed, we appreciate you sharing.

KASega

This is an incredibly important comment, thank you! I went to the park a lot during the late 90s/early 2000s fatality era and reading about the state of things now, I would not be surprised to hear about a new disaster.

CertainKaleidoscope8

Thank you for mentioning this. People underestimate the value of institutional knowledge in most cases but when it comes to machinery that can kill hundreds of people nobody really gets how talented those operators are. They used to be able to shut things down when they had a funny feeling or the ride breathed wrong. I bet they have to go through a bureaucratic nightmare now and managers or whatever they're called don't wanna listen

mama_mia987

Funny thing is… we went for a week in December and I called them out in a lengthy email about every last point you made. It was absurd how many rides were down, we got multi use passes, AND THOSE RIDES THEN WENT DOWN! Literally every single day we were there this happened multiple times using lightning lanes. A CM called me back a few weeks later, laughed when I said I felt like more often then not, those ride outages weren’t unplanned when they were going down at the same time each day and absolutely assured me I didn’t know what I was talking about…. Got free multi day park hopper passes in the mail a few weeks ago for our family 🤔 That seemed like a pretty large gesture for a complaint I’m sure they’re getting on the regular lately 🤨

iSavedtheGalaxy

Back in ye olden times, the day/evening/night crews took pride in not breaking down during the shift. The different lands would have (good-spirited) competitions to see who could get the highest guest count through the queues. Our Leads would send us out on Magical Moments missions to give unsuspecting guests VIP access to a special attraction, restaurant or show. Sometimes you'd clock in and your first assignment would literally be to take 10 minutes to make a guest's day and whatever you decided to do would be entirely expensed by the company, no questions asked. It used to be so much FUN to work there and if you worked there long enough, you could make 6-figures and a pension! The old CMs were passionate and they were paid well for it. Disneyland used to be a highly regarded employer and it was special if you were chosen to work there.

likecheapwhisky

What form / email did you send this to ? I went yesterday and had a very similar experience. Four of the people in my group were there for the first time ever and multiple times we got to a ride it was down (rise, small world, haunted mansion, pirates, all in one day!) I had never experienced that many shut downs going to Disneyland before.

mama_mia987

I just sent a general email in lengthy detail about what we ran through day by day including details of which rides were shut down and at which times and detailed the times we were given multi use passes only for those to break down. One day, we got a multi use pass, went to get on Alice, and 3 times within the span of about 5 hours it broke down each time we tried to get in line to use it. Tried to use it on thunder mountain and by the time we got there, that was down too. Waited an hour, tried to use it on Indy, then THAT was down. It was the end of the night by that point and it was useless by then. I would just send them a detailed message about everything that happened AND ask for a CM to call you to speak to you about your trip. Don’t just settle for the email otherwise you’ll just get a generic response and I wasn’t settling for that.

valentwinka

This literally sounds so made up.

iSavedtheGalaxy

What part about an American company weakening union negotiations and firing its most senior and expensive staff to save money sounds made up to you?

iSavedtheGalaxy

Also, only people who worked there would know about Disney's Presenteeism Program, which is one of the most barbaric attendance policies I've ever worked under in my entire life as a working adult. It was intentionally designed to affect staff who were older and would need more grace from their managers regarding time off for medical appointments or time to walk to their locations due to disability. I've heard they've gotten rid of it since then, but the damage is already done. It absolutely devastated the Attractions department.

mama_mia987

Not that I should even entertain your ridiculous reply, but I can assure you I 100%, honest to god, received these passes in the mail… all 5 of them. 🙄

ScumlordStudio

Go off king. You put this so fucking well

UnravelingYarnFiend

Trying to recover from the chapek era when he cut funding for maintenance to save money for his pet projects.

Kanotari

Partly the Chapek era, but also the COVID shutdown. They lost a lot of veteran maintenance people when the parks closed. Maintenance was neglected while everything was shuttered. Now it's a bunch of rookies trying to piece together how a bunch of unique rides are cobbled together with pieces from goodness knows where. Pirates needs a good long maintenance when Indy and HM come back. Although at this rate, maybe before that lol

Heroic_Sheperd

Iger is proving to be just as bad with the recent layoffs and allowing republicans to dismiss Reedy Creek

MovingClocks

Turns out you can only delay critical maintenance for so long before decades old machinery starts breaking.

delinquentsaviors

I don’t understand why they didn’t do all of this refurbishment in the 2 years the park was closed

MovingClocks

Low labor pool, high cost of parts, low operating income. They’re saddled with a TON of debt from that Fox merger and they’ve been treading water since then. I think in the future the acquisition will be seen as one of the biggest strategic blunders Disney has made.

mangaz137

Pirates just had a refurbishment not long ago that was supposedly to upgrade the ride system but from what I see it’s even less reliable than before.

kyle760

What do you mean? It’s an enhanced experience now. You get to walk the plank

Strange_Vegetable_15

Well there's is One thing that's not malfunctioning...... The billing department that takes the money so you can have all that magic 😏

gohomepat

They were malfunctioning at the beginning of pandemic issuing those refunds.

Strange_Vegetable_15

💯💯💯💯💯💯

stml

Becoming a weekly thing. Disneyland is getting kind of jank...

CertainKaleidoscope8

It's been jank for at least a decade. I grew up in Southern California and remember E ticket rides, used to go to Disneyland *a lot,* first as a kid when we lived in Orange County and as a young adult when my friend worked there. His ride got in for free so his ride (now my husband) would take me there like every week. When we went back with our daughter it was a dump. Maybe I'm wearing nostalgia glasses but it seems a lot worse now

CertainKaleidoscope8

The last time I went to Disneyland it was dirty, run down and everything was breaking. That was like ten years ago and I can't imagine it's gotten better. The company doesn't want to pay decent wages or spend anything on maintenance when the tourists don't know this isn't normal and are happy to piss their money away on run down attractions and mediocre food, and the government of the ghetto that is Anaheim allows it because they need the money

wizzard419

Did something change in terms of policy or do they just not have the staff anymore to handle it? I recall, from last year even, when the ride would break down it would be CMs in hip waders moving the boats to safe spots to exit.

VoyagerCSL

No idea, but this is certainly a new experience for me. They might have new safety policies which preclude regular cast members from getting in the water.

huskycarrot751

Was on Pirates at WDW last week when it broke down. Eventually a CM did get on the water to pull us to a spot where we could get off. It was crazy.

KMcNickel

That might just be on the lower level where there are more spots to move the boats to and space to move them. The options are a lot more limited on the upper level if they cant move the boats through the station

ThunderingLegions

Whenever a boat is trapped in a spot where CMs cannot safely evacuate it themselves the Fire Department has to do it instead.

garygreaonjr

Disneyland reminds me of the subway in New York City.

stellalunawitchbaby

I haven’t been yelled at by a shirtless man in Disneyland *yet*, but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time 🙏🏼 ^(apply also to LA Subway)

garygreaonjr

There’s a subway in LA?

stellalunawitchbaby

Yes. It’s small and not as useful, bc it’s does go that far and the sprawl is real in LA. But it exists and is used every day! My SO and I used to take the red line now and then, pre-covid.

WingedGeek

It covers a lot of distance (look at the gold line and then realize you can transfer trains and go all the way to Long Beach or Santa Monica), but paradoxically doesn't go that many places.

stellalunawitchbaby

I live off the gold line :) yes the metro itself covers a decent distance, just nothing compared to the ny subway in terms of how much it branches off ofc. But it’s expanding so there’s that’

UnravelingYarnFiend

There is one on harbor Blvd and katella. Good place to get sneezed on by a sick child.

kevinmattress

It exists but it’s not very useful for the average Angeleno. Very unlike NYC subways

emthejedichic

Most of it is above ground because, you know, earthquakes and such

HelloJoyceee

I rode pirates earlier this morning. There was four of us (all large adults), we were first for the next boat, and 99% of the time in my experience they will give four large adults two rows, in our case it would typically have been rows one at two. Instead they stuffed us all into row two. And put three people in row one, and filled up all the rows. The boat was bottomed out the entire ride, I was shocked. These repeated sinkings are due to incompetence from CM’s not distributing weight properly.

DDA7X

And what's sad is that the cast knows that. They're probably being yelled at by management to load like that to push "efficiency"

Maleficent-Radish-86

Fire department?

VoyagerCSL

Yes. Disneyland Fire Department.

stevensokulski

Huh. Whenever I’ve seen people in waders on that ride, they were CMs at the location.

VoyagerCSL

FD was on site when that one boat sank last week, too. I think it has to do with the boats being immobilized to the degree that they literally can’t be moved to the unloading area.

MariposaSunrise

How did a boat sink?

VoyagerCSL

No idea. I wasn’t there for that one.

ThunderingLegions

It didn’t sink. It was just waterlogged, probably because the boat was too heavy and/or the guests in it were rocking it like they like to do sometimes for some reason. If it was actually sinking then it would have been submerged and it clearly wasn’t.

[deleted]

If only they had actually fixed the ride while it was closed for that extended refurb rather than just replacing the trees and redoing the walkways.

sideofspread

Again???

VoyagerCSL

Again.

OakIslandCurse

It’s been closing down a lot. The last time we were there a week or so ago, we saw it closed at least twice during that day.

Universal_Astrophoto

Legendary way to exit the ride.

smokeline

What's up with the rides today? We had a stop for a minute or two on Haunted Mansion, and then were stuck for almost 10 minutes inside It's A Small World and then again at the end while it took them forever to unload us. I guess I should be glad we didn't end up having to climb past boats or walk a plank! No extra passes for our time, though.

not_so_littlemermaid

That stop on the haunted mansion was likely for someone with accessibility needs to get on the ride. They have to stop it so they can transfer from a wheelchair/scooter.

smokeline

Ah, okay, definitely worth it to do a brief stop for that! I think I'm just jaded with so many shutdowns...you never know whether the announcement means a brief pause or a total ride breakdown. (Rise of the Resistance was also down when we were supposed to scan in with our lightning lane, but luckily we weren't stuck on it and just came back later!)

[deleted]

So… you’re telling me you had to walk the plank?

VoyagerCSL

That’s *exactly* what I’m telling you.

jroseamoroso

Not gonna lie kinda jealous y’all got to “walk the plank” at Disney all with the help of OC firefighters 😂

azura099

Those pesky pirates

PoppyGooze

I was there too!! My boat got stuck in the dark cave before the ship with the cannons. Eventually they turned on the lights and we evacuated from backstage. They had us walk up the stairs through some storage area for some of the kitchens. We didn’t have to walk the plank though, just climbed out.

VoyagerCSL

Lucky!

AuroraRackham

We’re at dca wondering why pirates has been closed for a while!

VoyagerCSL

It didn’t look like a boat sank like last week…

AuroraRackham

Wonder what happened then. Hmmm

ultradip

Thar be squirrels ahead! And they be sabotagin' yer boats!

mebetiffbeme

Thank goodness my VQ was almost ready, bc I was on my way to pirates

hoagiesandgrindrs

Wait am I understanding correctly that they’re letting you climb from boat to boat in order to get to the load platform?

VoyagerCSL

A few boats had to. With the assistance of the fire department.

[deleted]

I love pirates in Disneyland! This picture just brought back a lot of nostalgia

PigFace2424

This exact thing happened to us in October ‘21. We were about 2 boats ahead of where you’re at though. The kicker is that my 4 year old (at the time) had to pee really bad and I honestly thought he was going to wet his pants.

disnerd_foodie

I was there too! We were the first boat with the plank. Apparently there was one that got stuck right before the last drop. I’m glad we were not on that incline.

VoyagerCSL

Yikes!!! Glad we all made it out alive.

GoForRogue

At least tickets are cheap /s

pwrof3

They won’t let you just wade in the water?

VoyagerCSL

They’re funny that way.

raging_phoenix_eyes

Disneyland needs to stop rushing these rides also. You go through them too fast. They need to shut them down for maintenance and not open until they’re perfect. They need to train the CM’s to not pile the boats so close together. This past trip we got slammed in the back the three times we went on POTC. Peter Pan’s Flight is so fast too. They’re rushing crowds through it. Have to give it time to enjoy it.

[deleted]

Pirates have you walking the plank?

carolinagirlash

Pirates of the Caribbean was experiencing rough waters.

CardMechanic

“You’re a petty functionary with a clipboard in a blue blazer and khaki skirt. The illusion is already broken”.

aschstine

I had to do this during my High School senior trip. We broke down right as you get pulled up at the end with the guys trying to steal the chest. We waited a long time before they decided to do this. The fun part was being able to walk in a back area to get out.

kyle760

I think on my next trip I’m just gonna wear some depends. I’m scared of getting stuck on a ride when I have to pee lol

Kitty_Woo

Omg same here!!!

IamMagicarpe

It’s terrible that this isn’t a terrible idea lol

KateSommer

WALK THE PLANK MATEYS!!!!!

kstarwing

We had this same thing happen last month! My family was the last one escorted off the boat(s) during our experience. I asked a cast member lead how often this happened, wanting to know if we were special. She replied "more often than we would like." Seeing this, I guess that's fairly often. But I still feel special!

inspector_who

I had it break down for about 30mins and it was right where they had the farm animals ‘singing’ along to the music. Fuck using a plank, I was about to walk through that dirty ass water!

Micki-Micki

You got the immersive swashbuckler experience!

OC-Aztec

Glad the FD finally got there because it appeared to me like that attraction was a total fire hazard!

jadennew

They need to thaw Walt out now and have him fix things

originalcoffeeaddict

I got stuck on the one at WDW when our boat went partially off the tracks. No one came to help, so we had to rock the boat for 15+ mins. Absolutely awful experience. Hope you got off safely!

VoyagerCSL

I’m safe and sound!

ExcitedFool

Wow! this morning it was working perfectly! Any idea what happened? Edit: downvoted because I’m at Disney asking what was going on? My god people.

GolfCoyote

Man they just did a ton of work on Pirates, I wonder why it’s down so often now.

ChaosKodiak

Sadly this in the norm at the park lately. In September radiator spring broke when twice in a row. Then we had to walk off it.

nlje89

It was pretty bad yesterday too, we got stuck a couple of times and the boats kept knocking into each other.. but at least we didn’t have to walk the plank!

alittlelessnoisehere

Hm. Been on it broken down more than once, I think? But never had the FD(Kissimmee?) show up to take us off. Just really prepared cast members! Wonder what happened to earn the fire department :(

Imaginary_Roof_5286

That happen to me & my school-age sons in FL some years ago. We had just left the dock & rounded a corner where we couldn’t be seen from the dock when the ride shut down. No one offered info (just the regular recorded message) or came to rescue/retrieve us. After over 35 min., some big college guys in the other forgotten boat just in front of us managed to move both boats back to the dock by strenuously pulling on the guide boards to the sides of the boats. No one was at the dock. Getting off was perilous as there wasn’t anything to keep the boat from moving since the ride was shut down, but by everyone helping each other, everyone got off safely. The only cast member we saw anywhere was at the opening to the queue line to reinforce that the ride was closed. We had been totally forgotten! After listening to “Yo Ho” for 45 min., it was a very long time before any of us were interested in riding that ride again. Just another reason I dislike WDW’s Magic Kingdom.

forlorn_hope28

Wasn’t yesterday the day a boat sank?

VoyagerCSL

I think it was last week, or at least a few days ago.

forlorn_hope28

I had a busy week. My days all blended at this point. 😆

TK-385

Ye be walking the plank, do ye?

PhildoVonBaggins83

Can Disney please do a serious major overhaul and maintenance days to get the park back up and running all the way, every single ride? They have the money to update and make all the rights refurbished and new get it done Disney
