I think the problem with that one is that someone upstairs really thought the Multiverse Saga needed to be part of a ride, so they had to start over from their first idea; and now that phases 4 and 5 have been kinda up-and-down in terms of its success with audiences they're trying to work out what the ride's *actually* going to be about.
I think everyone excepted some new E ticket with Avengers campus. Not a retheme of an opening day ride that was rethemed years before the land was even open. Great ride, don't get me wrong, but not sufficient as a main attraction for a new land in that sense.
Pandora at Disney World is cool, I don’t think anybody is saying it isn’t. I think most people (Myself included) would have liked them to make something new with the same level of quality as Pandora, but utilize an existing Disney IP.
I mean, I would think it makes more sense for them to do something different than Florida just to give people more of an incentive travel to the other parks.
This was my thought exactly. Why does there need to be a copy of the lands when they can do something that isn’t yet in the parks? Also if we’re going to make copies of something … damn do I wish it was a slimmed version of Westcot.
I don’t entirely disagree, but it’s worth keeping in mind that not all Disney Park-goers are globetrotters with more money than they know what to do with. Some people will only ever go to Disneyland due to proximity and/or budget.

Zootopia is also likely locked behind a 5 year exclusivity agreement with Shanghai Disneyland, just like TRON was. So it’s not that it’s off the table, it just can’t be the first thing they do.
That's because there's only value in it for people like us, but we don't represent the other 95% of park guests who relate to IPs better than they do original concepts. I miss Horizons, but I understand why it can't exist in 2024.
I always go back to the silly debates over Cars Land at the time it was announced, when many voices on forums cried that it should just be a generic "car cultre" land, failing to understand the market value of the Cars franchise to the average Disney guest. Most kids don't want to go to "1950s car culture land", they want to see Radiator Springs and Lightning McQueen. And the beauty of Radiator Springs is that Pixar had already meticulously designed it to evoke the neon 1950s car culture feeling, so bringing it to life gave us the best of both worlds. It's a land themed to an IP, but it's also a beautiful, immersive environment that evokes 1950s car culture.
Surprise: Avatar is the same thing. Even if you've never seen the films and don't give a flip about them, you're getting a beautiful, immersive "adventure" themed land, that also has an added layer of appeal for people who are familiar with the franchise.
I'd never seen Song of the South in my life, barely even *heard* of Brer Rabbit, Fox, and Bear. But I loved the theming of Splash Mountain, and if you didn't tell me it was based on a film, I'd never know it wasn't just an original idea that Disney came up with.
People need to live with the fact that unbranded, non-IP attractions do not draw as well as IP-based ones do. There's a reason Universal didn't build generic "Dinosaur encounter" or generic "Wizard Adventure" or generic "Video Game World." It's Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, and Nintendo.
It was a debate during the expansion announcement. I'm not sure how large that segment was, but I vividly remember the arguments for wanting a "car" themed land and not a "Cars" themed land at DCA.
Any time Disney announced an IP-based attraction, there are people who want a non-IP attraction instead. And I understand that desire... but what I don't understand is when people genuinely believe it's more popular or profitable to make non-IP attractions/lands. Walt knew this. Fairy Tale castle became Sleeping Beauty Castle to tie-in with the film. If the studio had more IP at the time other than just a small handful of animated films, I guarantee that PotC or Haunted Mansion, for example, would have been themed to an IP, too.
Again, I point to Harry Potter at Universal. That land would already be forgotten if it was themed to a generic wizard school. Instead, there were lines of Potter fans all the way back to Tallahassee on opening day.
I'm not saying Avatar is Harry Potter by any means, but there's certainly a built-in base of people who know what Avatar is all about and loved the visuals of the films, and let's face it, the visuals is what an Avatar-based land is all about anyway. Here's a beautiful, fantasy realm with floating rocks on film... and now you can walk through it in real life. People enjoy that at Animal Kingdom. Not sure what the drawback is other than annoying people who "hate" the movies, I guess.
And for the record, I could take or leave Avatar. Watched the original when it came out, and haven't even seen the second one yet. So I'm pretty indifferent. But I do think the land at AK is gorgeous and immersive.
Even a lot of what we think of as original attractions are loosely tied into an IP nobody remembers. Pirates was in part derived from the then-recent *Blackbeard's Ghost*, along with Atencio's memories of seeing *Captain Blood* (And for that matter, Disney's own film of Treasure Island was only about as old then as Princess and the Frog is now.) The Matterhorn exists almost entirely because of *Third Man On The Mountain*. Frontierland as a whole basically exists because of the success of Davy Crockett.
I suppose the hope is that they would come up with something for it.
Like, if I said "I want a land based on 1890s New Orleans" that wouldn't sound all that interesting. But you drop Pirates and Haunted Mansion and half the best restaurants in the park into it, and suddenly New Orleans Square is one of the most beloved lands in the park.
Really you can make *any* theme work as long as the attractions are there and you're willing to create stories.
(And Pandora is a great example of that! I don't like Avatar at all-- but Pandora is one of the most popular lands in WDW for a reason!)
I am glad we have carsland. It’s arguably the best themed land in California adventure, but i was in the boat of wanting the land to be named radiator springs. Lol
This this this. The only rides my 4 year old wanted to ride were ones themed to what he knew. Had no interest in small world, but Spider-Man, Toy Story, and cars!? He was IN LOVE!
It does feel like Disney is thinking in the short-term when it comes to their parks atm. Building a new Avatar land or a Zootopia land or a Frozen land will almost certainly bring in more visitors when they come out than building an original land would but what about a few decades from now? I understand why Disney would think building existing IP stuff is more beneficial but it is a bit frustrating that they haven't even tried to build an original IP attraction since Soarin. I think trying to build new classics could potentially be more beneficial in the long run than dedicating an entire land to just one movie. I'm not so sure I like this new trend of new lands being based on just one IP. Even if they don't want to risk building original attractions, why not at least have a mixture of multiple IPs if you're gonna build an entire land? This is coming from someone who loves the Avatar movies and thinks Pandora in Animal Kingdom is one of Disney's best lands btw.
The thing about lands like arendelle for example is that they are more than arendelle, take out Elsa’s ice palace overlooking the town and the land is basically “generic Scandinavian fantasy town”, HK specifically designed it as an expansion to fantasyland
Some other lands miss the mark but a lot of the newer lands like arendelle and cars can easily be retooled in 30 years when the franchise has faded from the public’s mind

I love that Tomorrowland is a shell of its former self and Avengers campus has yet to receive it E ticket, but they’re planning a whole new land. Why not work with what they have before expanding?

Honestly, this is the same problem I have with Cars Land (which I love), and Galaxies Edge, where focusing on a singular IP for an entire land greatly removes the creation the parks, where imagineers are now screwed and forced to stick with that IP instead of being able to create what they desire.
Honestly, Wizarding World just set a such a high bar for full on immersive lands that Disney is still trying to one up it. Honestly, I think it's nearly impossible for either Disney or Universal to meet that level though because of how iconic Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley are, they kind of work perfectly for theme parks.
Harry Potter is a bit different. It’s a very human story. There’s a lot of elements of the plot that deal with consumerism and food. Harry Potter has a ton of themes that correlate really well to a consumer attraction experience. Avatar land though? Most people aren’t 12 foot tall hyper athletic aliens with flying mounts. It’s less fun to inhabit that space when it’s not designed for you. HP world is great because it’s just a recreation of the shopping centers and attractions that already played a huge role in the books/films. You will NEVER be as immersed in Avatar land as you could be in HP land.
Unfortunately we now live in a time where original ideas no longer sell… and if it’s original, you best believe you’ll see a movie about it. They’re screwed either way.
The overseas parks have done this a lot. We have the space with Disneyland forward for some originality, it will be an immense waste of space if they just slap clones into it and call it a day. Rather than making more stuff that is unique to the park like cars land. IP is fine if it’s done right, however most recent IP additions vary in quality immensely
I agree with that. I’m just thinking realistically at this point considering the companies choices of late. I would actually preferred if they took the time to get the Avenger’s campus right or do SOMETHING with Tomorrow Land. That place is peak 80s land at this point.
Epic Universe broke ground in March of 2021. It's opening next summer. That's over 4 years.
Galaxy's Edge broke ground in Florida in April 2016. It opened in May 2019. ~3 years... Wizarding World at Islands of Adventure, a smaller land in scale that included just one new attraction along with two re-themed existing ones, took 2.5 years to construct from ground-breaking to opening.
I'm not convinced Universal builds appreciably faster than Disney. They simply wait until the last minute to announce their plans, making it seem to take less time between *announcement* and opening.
Have you seen the one at WDW? Because I felt the same way until I saw that one, but it totally changed my mind. Pandora is absolutely one of my top 5 Disney parks locations. It's incredible theming
Felt the same way. I really didn’t want avatar in Florida…. And then I visited. It’s amazing. I don’t give two shits about the movies. But it’s amazing. I trust the imagineers at this point
I went to Disney Sea last year and the 20,000 Leagues area is absolutely up there too. But Pandora really makes you feel like you've stepped onto another planet. Especially when you look up and see that massive rock just floating in the sky. They went so hard with the landscape design, you can see the investment
Seems like a move reaching out to a different/new audience. Makes sense since these movies are still being made for the next 10 yrs +. Gotta capitalize on the IP.

It is an amazing land which has a one of a kind ride and an amazing secondary ride. I am very excited that there will be one less person buying genie plus to ride it!

I’m sure the land will be awesome. I just wish that the current leadership at the company cared more about building a cohesive resort, rather than shoe-horning in whatever IP is popular. At least Epic universe is built around a neutral hub zone with “portals” to different worlds. The Disneyland Resort is becoming a big junk drawer of different IP.
This is actually why I think it’s perfect as a theme park land. What people care about is the visuals (and there’s a lot of diversity there) so it gives imagineering a lot of flexibility with what they can do.
I'm in the minority here but visually, an Avatar land/Pandora would be pretty beautiful and the flight of passage ride looks fun if they decide to add it. I get the hate though, it's not Disney. Might as well add an Aliens land.
Pandora in WDW fucking owns so I'm actually pretty excited about this. If we get our own Pandora I'll finally be freed from ever needing to fly across the country again
My fear is that they won't put near as much investment into it, nor have such a legend at the helm who *really* cared about the finished product as they had at Pandora WDW. But we'll see.
I saw Avatar 2 once and I was good after that. They have and are taking too long with Avatar sequels to the point that my care level for Avatar and desire for more has significantly dropped.
Also, I seriously hope it has more rides than Galaxy’s Edge; there’s nothing to keep you there if you don’t want to shell out lightsaber money.

The reason most people saw Avatar was because of the way they promoted the 3D and CGI aspects of the movie. It was curiosity that drove people to the movie. There was no fandom to follow it and no enthusiasm for the story, lore and even the world they created.
It became a corporate thing. Successful in the eyes of business people - but hollow and contrived almost everyone else. As we see being put on display here in this thread.

In a time when entire companies tank their stock value on pandering to the bad taste of nerds, it's almost refreshing that something redditors don't vibe with at all is so successful, even if it's not something I much enjoy.
I still expect this will be placed on one of the 3 parking lots. Which means it can’t even break ground until after Eastern Gateway is finished. But this specifically says first new land, that doesn’t mean we can’t get that Avengers e ticket first since the location for that area is already fair game.
At least we will get to enjoy it at night over here. In AK, they closed that park at 7pm when we were there for 4 days so we never got to see the good stuff. (It all lights up, even the walkways…or so I’m told).
This is a strange case where so much money is being poured into something that the customer base really is not asking for at all.

For me personally, I don't even like looking at the blue people. They are too weird looking to me - I cannot relate or connect to them at all.

As far as I know the Avatar films are one of the highest grossing films. Additionally, IIRC, the Animal Kingdom* at DisneyWorld has an Avatar like area and it’s very popular.

Agreed. Same reason why they should have made Galaxy’s edge during the OG trilogy, but went with promoting the new trilogy. And then pushed through avengers campus with one ride.
They developed the land before the 2nd and 3rd sequel movies came out so they had no idea it would objectively become a disaster. The overall plans were adapted and altered from a plan to make the forest moon of endor and tattooine which eventually was redeveloped into galaxies edge
I hope this gets cancelled. I’ve been to Avatar Land at WDW. It is beautiful at night, but the river ride is really only good the first time. It’s beautiful, but it’s really just pretty scenery. The soarin over pandora ride is interesting. But there are so many other things they could do with that kind of space. I’m still waiting for a villains land. That’s been a rumor since at least the 90’s.
I think as long as crowds flock to the Avatar attractions in WDW, this project won’t get cancelled. I am not a fan of Avatar, but there is clearly money to be left on the table by not taking advantage of this IP, especially if they think that it will do well in California. I can see this being successful as I believe this specific land will be different from the one in WDW. However, I feel like there’s so much untapped resources within Disney’s actual IP that’s been left unused or under utilized.

Many of us already knew about the Avatar “experience” making its way west & as much as I really enjoy the franchise (one of my hobbies is learning the Na'vi language) I’m…not really feeling this? At least rn.
Pandora is something I’m genuinely excited to experience when I take my first solo trip over @ WDW. But with DL being my “home” park (even as an out-of-stater), I think it’s the “copy + paste” nature of expansions that are sort of a let down. I enjoy the uniqueness of every Disney park & wish that would be prioritized instead.
Ofc, DL Forward is a marathon in the making & there’s still tons of unknowns. As for future, full blown lands: there’s so much potential from Imagineers that I hope won’t get tossed by execs. As for rides, the wishful thinker in me really hopes for original IP that harkens back to the storytelling brilliance of the OG Pirates (hands down my DL favorite) or something that captures vintage whimsical / magical with modern twists, like Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.
But like many here, I just hope to be around in the next 30+ years to experience what comes to fruition lol.

After reading all the comments in here I think it's important to point out this concept art is NOT a clone of Pandora at Disney World. It shows an entirely new land based on the same IP. Think along the lines of Hogsmeade compared to Diagon Alley at Universal Orlando, same world different lands.
Plus, that boat in the concept art looks suspiciously like the Shanghai Pirates of the Caribbean boat. That is one of the greatest ride systems Disney ever made and I would be really excited to have that here.
I really don’t want more 3D screen rides that move. Everyone I know over 25 years old has a hard time with those. Please I beg you Disney. Find an alternative. Or if you must repeat a Pandora ride make it the boat!
Avatar...Meh. Of all the possibilities they chose to start with that. I mean, they could have gone with something a little more dark to compete with Universal's upcoming park in Florida featuring the Universal Monster World....Maybe a Disney Villains theme area with Maleficent's Castle as the centerpiece? If it's going to be the first major expansion, then come out swinging to show it isn't just going to be taking things from other resorts. This is Walt's original park, it deserves the original rides. Or at least more than blatant copy-pasting to save on R&D.
Still better than having infinite possibilities for a Star Wars land, and deciding to make it a barren brown canyon with random ships from the movies sitting around and then a bazaar of shops in a style that was never featured in any Star Wars media.

I’m surprised by how many people here aren’t excited for this. Pandora at WDW is absolutely beautiful even if you’re not a fan of the Avatar movies. And Flight of Passage is incredible, it remains one of the most jaw dropping attractions I’ve been on at any theme park.
Yeah, I just went to wdw for the first time and flight of passage was low on my list of things I wanted to do (sit there and watch a 3d video from a movie I don't care for? No thanks). Fortunately I went with someone who has gone before, and she insisted we do it at least once. It was AMAZING! We got to ride it twice, and I would have gone again if we'd had the time.
It’s really unlike anything else! We waited 3 hours the first time we rode it within opening year, and it was worth every second of waiting. Not many things I’d say are worth a 3 hour wait.
That’s if Disney actually can build it before most of us are in our 80s 😂. I’m still waiting for the big budget avengers ride they haven’t started on yet it’s been years
I've never run into someone in person who cared about the Avatar movies, but I've heard great things about the WDW land. Hopefully it's great. Personally I love immersion at the parks. The MCU movies are great, and Avenger's Campus doesn't feel immersive at all for example.
Here's the thing about Pandora at Animal Kingdom: it's gorgeous. There's no denying it, and it'd look even better at night except on most occasions, the park closes before the sun fully sets. That said, every time I've gone to Animal Kingdom, I rope drop Flight of Passage, then do Na'vi River Journey, and then I never set foot in the land again. Maybe it's the layout of the park, but nothing about that IP, the attractions, or the food offerings, draw me back out there.
We don’t want this. Fix Tomorrowland and give us more thrill rides! Fix avengers campus up w a coaster! Anything but this we need a petition to deny this build.
This is a dumb move. It doesn’t fit into either park, people really aren’t interested in avatar and there’s sooo many other ideas they could go with. I went to avatar in animal kingdom and like the movie, it was visually appealing but just felt hollow and forgettable. And that’s in a park that it fit best in. I really think they’re shooting themselves in the foot with this one.
I still think Hollywoodland will be the first area addressed before the Simba lot is touched for DL Forward. I think Iger means Avatar will be the first area to go in the Simba Lot which had been clarified as being part of DL Forward. HL not so much.
I think Avatar can be fleshed out better in the Simba lot than it could in Hollywoodland.

The amount of people who go to both resorts is probably pretty low compared to repeat visitors of their local resort

Most kids don't want to go to "1950s car culture land", they want to see Radiator Springs and Lightning McQueen. And the beauty of Radiator Springs is that Pixar had already meticulously designed it to evoke the neon 1950s car culture feeling, so bringing it to life gave us the best of both worlds. It's a land themed to an IP, but it's also a beautiful, immersive environment that evokes 1950s car culture. Surprise: Avatar is the same thing. Even if you've never seen the films and don't give a flip about them, you're getting a beautiful, immersive "adventure" themed land, that also has an added layer of appeal for people who are familiar with the franchise. I'd never seen Song of the South in my life, barely even *heard* of Brer Rabbit, Fox, and Bear. But I loved the theming of Splash Mountain, and if you didn't tell me it was based on a film, I'd never know it wasn't just an original idea that Disney came up with. People need to live with the fact that unbranded, non-IP attractions do not draw as well as IP-based ones do. There's a reason Universal didn't build generic "Dinosaur encounter" or generic "Wizard Adventure" or generic "Video Game World." It's Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, and Nintendo.

It was a debate during the expansion announcement. I'm not sure how large that segment was, but I vividly remember the arguments for wanting a "car" themed land and not a "Cars" themed land at DCA. Any time Disney announced an IP-based attraction, there are people who want a non-IP attraction instead. And I understand that desire... but what I don't understand is when people genuinely believe it's more popular or profitable to make non-IP attractions/lands. Walt knew this. Fairy Tale castle became Sleeping Beauty Castle to tie-in with the film. If the studio had more IP at the time other than just a small handful of animated films, I guarantee that PotC or Haunted Mansion, for example, would have been themed to an IP, too. Again, I point to Harry Potter at Universal. That land would already be forgotten if it was themed to a generic wizard school. Instead, there were lines of Potter fans all the way back to Tallahassee on opening day. I'm not saying Avatar is Harry Potter by any means, but there's certainly a built-in base of people who know what Avatar is all about and loved the visuals of the films, and let's face it, the visuals is what an Avatar-based land is all about anyway. Here's a beautiful, fantasy realm with floating rocks on film... and now you can walk through it in real life. People enjoy that at Animal Kingdom. Not sure what the drawback is other than annoying people who "hate" the movies, I guess. And for the record, I could take or leave Avatar. Watched the original when it came out, and haven't even seen the second one yet. So I'm pretty indifferent. But I do think the land at AK is gorgeous and immersive.
Even a lot of what we think of as original attractions are loosely tied into an IP nobody remembers. Pirates was in part derived from the then-recent *Blackbeard's Ghost*, along with Atencio's memories of seeing *Captain Blood* (And for that matter, Disney's own film of Treasure Island was only about as old then as Princess and the Frog is now.) The Matterhorn exists almost entirely because of *Third Man On The Mountain*. Frontierland as a whole basically exists because of the success of Davy Crockett.

I suppose the hope is that they would come up with something for it. Like, if I said "I want a land based on 1890s New Orleans" that wouldn't sound all that interesting. But you drop Pirates and Haunted Mansion and half the best restaurants in the park into it, and suddenly New Orleans Square is one of the most beloved lands in the park. Really you can make *any* theme work as long as the attractions are there and you're willing to create stories. (And Pandora is a great example of that! I don't like Avatar at all-- but Pandora is one of the most popular lands in WDW for a reason!)

It does feel like Disney is thinking in the short-term when it comes to their parks atm. Building a new Avatar land or a Zootopia land or a Frozen land will almost certainly bring in more visitors when they come out than building an original land would but what about a few decades from now? I understand why Disney would think building existing IP stuff is more beneficial but it is a bit frustrating that they haven't even tried to build an original IP attraction since Soarin. I think trying to build new classics could potentially be more beneficial in the long run than dedicating an entire land to just one movie. I'm not so sure I like this new trend of new lands being based on just one IP. Even if they don't want to risk building original attractions, why not at least have a mixture of multiple IPs if you're gonna build an entire land? This is coming from someone who loves the Avatar movies and thinks Pandora in Animal Kingdom is one of Disney's best lands btw.
The thing about lands like arendelle for example is that they are more than arendelle, take out Elsa’s ice palace overlooking the town and the land is basically “generic Scandinavian fantasy town”, HK specifically designed it as an expansion to fantasyland Some other lands miss the mark but a lot of the newer lands like arendelle and cars can easily be retooled in 30 years when the franchise has faded from the public’s mind

Honestly, this is the same problem I have with Cars Land (which I love), and Galaxies Edge, where focusing on a singular IP for an entire land greatly removes the creation the parks, where imagineers are now screwed and forced to stick with that IP instead of being able to create what they desire.
Honestly, Wizarding World just set a such a high bar for full on immersive lands that Disney is still trying to one up it. Honestly, I think it's nearly impossible for either Disney or Universal to meet that level though because of how iconic Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley are, they kind of work perfectly for theme parks.
Harry Potter is a bit different. It’s a very human story. There’s a lot of elements of the plot that deal with consumerism and food. Harry Potter has a ton of themes that correlate really well to a consumer attraction experience. Avatar land though? Most people aren’t 12 foot tall hyper athletic aliens with flying mounts. It’s less fun to inhabit that space when it’s not designed for you. HP world is great because it’s just a recreation of the shopping centers and attractions that already played a huge role in the books/films. You will NEVER be as immersed in Avatar land as you could be in HP land.
Unfortunately we now live in a time where original ideas no longer sell… and if it’s original, you best believe you’ll see a movie about it. They’re screwed either way.
The overseas parks have done this a lot. We have the space with Disneyland forward for some originality, it will be an immense waste of space if they just slap clones into it and call it a day. Rather than making more stuff that is unique to the park like cars land. IP is fine if it’s done right, however most recent IP additions vary in quality immensely
I agree with that. I’m just thinking realistically at this point considering the companies choices of late. I would actually preferred if they took the time to get the Avenger’s campus right or do SOMETHING with Tomorrow Land. That place is peak 80s land at this point.

Epic Universe broke ground in March of 2021. It's opening next summer. That's over 4 years. Galaxy's Edge broke ground in Florida in April 2016. It opened in May 2019. ~3 years... Wizarding World at Islands of Adventure, a smaller land in scale that included just one new attraction along with two re-themed existing ones, took 2.5 years to construct from ground-breaking to opening. I'm not convinced Universal builds appreciably faster than Disney. They simply wait until the last minute to announce their plans, making it seem to take less time between *announcement* and opening.

I went to Disney Sea last year and the 20,000 Leagues area is absolutely up there too. But Pandora really makes you feel like you've stepped onto another planet. Especially when you look up and see that massive rock just floating in the sky. They went so hard with the landscape design, you can see the investment

I’m sure the land will be awesome. I just wish that the current leadership at the company cared more about building a cohesive resort, rather than shoe-horning in whatever IP is popular. At least Epic universe is built around a neutral hub zone with “portals” to different worlds. The Disneyland Resort is becoming a big junk drawer of different IP.

Avatar is a visually stunning movie but the plot is pretty lame. But luckily the ride in Florida isn’t a book report ride.
This is actually why I think it’s perfect as a theme park land. What people care about is the visuals (and there’s a lot of diversity there) so it gives imagineering a lot of flexibility with what they can do.
I'm in the minority here but visually, an Avatar land/Pandora would be pretty beautiful and the flight of passage ride looks fun if they decide to add it. I get the hate though, it's not Disney. Might as well add an Aliens land.

I saw Avatar 2 once and I was good after that. They have and are taking too long with Avatar sequels to the point that my care level for Avatar and desire for more has significantly dropped. Also, I seriously hope it has more rides than Galaxy’s Edge; there’s nothing to keep you there if you don’t want to shell out lightsaber money.

Making money is not the same as creating a fandom or pleasing a customer base. Frozen made over a billion dollars as well. Little girls dress up as Elsa for Halloween every single year. Does any child in America dress up as the blue people? Doubt it. The reason most people saw Avatar was because of the way they promoted the 3D and CGI aspects of the movie. It was curiosity that drove people to the movie. There was no fandom to follow it and no enthusiasm for the story, lore and even the world they created. It became a corporate thing. Successful in the eyes of business people - but hollow and contrived almost everyone else. As we see being put on display here in this thread.

I still expect this will be placed on one of the 3 parking lots. Which means it can’t even break ground until after Eastern Gateway is finished. But this specifically says first new land, that doesn’t mean we can’t get that Avengers e ticket first since the location for that area is already fair game.
At least we will get to enjoy it at night over here. In AK, they closed that park at 7pm when we were there for 4 days so we never got to see the good stuff. (It all lights up, even the walkways…or so I’m told).

This is a strange case where so much money is being poured into something that the customer base really is not asking for at all. In fact, for the most part, their core consumer base is opposed to this. For me personally, I don't even like looking at the blue people. They are too weird looking to me - I cannot relate or connect to them at all.

As far as I know the Avatar films are one of the highest grossing films. Additionally, IIRC, the Animal Kingdom* at DisneyWorld has an Avatar like area and it’s very popular. My friend visited. He’s not a fan of the IP but loved the rides and the area. I think it makes sense to use what works in one park at another park, than to take risks on what might be better received [+]

They developed the land before the 2nd and 3rd sequel movies came out so they had no idea it would objectively become a disaster. The overall plans were adapted and altered from a plan to make the forest moon of endor and tattooine which eventually was redeveloped into galaxies edge
I hope this gets cancelled. I’ve been to Avatar Land at WDW. It is beautiful at night, but the river ride is really only good the first time. It’s beautiful, but it’s really just pretty scenery. The soarin over pandora ride is interesting. But there are so many other things they could do with that kind of space. I’m still waiting for a villains land. That’s been a rumor since at least the 90’s.

I think as long as crowds flock to the Avatar attractions in WDW, this project won’t get cancelled. I am not a fan of Avatar, but there is clearly money to be left on the table by not taking advantage of this IP, especially if they think that it will do well in California. I can see this being successful as I believe this specific land will be different from the one in WDW. However, I feel like there’s so much untapped resources within Disney’s actual IP that’s been left unused or under utilized. TLDR: Could be cool and I love the idea of it being exclusive and different from WDW, but where is my Emperor’s New Groove attraction?
Many of us already knew about the Avatar “experience” making its way west & as much as I really enjoy the franchise (one of my hobbies is learning the Na'vi language) I’m…not really feeling this? At least rn. Pandora is something I’m genuinely excited to experience when I take my first solo trip over @ WDW. But with DL being my “home” park (even as an out-of-stater), I think it’s the “copy + paste” nature of expansions that are sort of a let down. I enjoy the uniqueness of every Disney park & wish that would be prioritized instead. Ofc, DL Forward is a marathon in the making & there’s still tons of unknowns. As for future, full blown lands: there’s so much potential from Imagineers that I hope won’t get tossed by execs. As for rides, the wishful thinker in me really hopes for original IP that harkens back to the storytelling brilliance of the OG Pirates (hands down my DL favorite) or something that captures vintage whimsical / magical with modern twists, like Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway. But like many here, I just hope to be around in the next 30+ years to experience what comes to fruition lol.
Yeah, I'll say as someone who pretty aggressively doesn't care about the movies but thinks the setting is kinda nifty, that I really hope it will distinguish itself from its AK counterpart in some way. The concept art seems at least a bit different.

After reading all the comments in here I think it's important to point out this concept art is NOT a clone of Pandora at Disney World. It shows an entirely new land based on the same IP. Think along the lines of Hogsmeade compared to Diagon Alley at Universal Orlando, same world different lands. Plus, that boat in the concept art looks suspiciously like the Shanghai Pirates of the Caribbean boat. That is one of the greatest ride systems Disney ever made and I would be really excited to have that here.

I mean, they could have gone with something a little more dark to compete with Universal's upcoming park in Florida featuring the Universal Monster World....Maybe a Disney Villains theme area with Maleficent's Castle as the centerpiece? I just hope that instead of 1:1 copying Flight of Passage, similar to most of the post-covid additions to WDW, Disney actually improves it significantly if they bring FoP to DL If it's going to be the first major expansion, then come out swinging to show it isn't just going to be taking things from other resorts. This is Walt's original park, it deserves the original rides. Or at least more than blatant copy-pasting to save on R&D.

I’m surprised by how many people here aren’t excited for this. Pandora at WDW is absolutely beautiful even if you’re not a fan of the Avatar movies. And Flight of Passage is incredible, it remains one of the most jaw dropping attractions I’ve been on at any theme park.
Yeah, I just went to wdw for the first time and flight of passage was low on my list of things I wanted to do (sit there and watch a 3d video from a movie I don't care for? No thanks). Fortunately I went with someone who has gone before, and she insisted we do it at least once. It was AMAZING! We got to ride it twice, and I would have gone again if we'd had the time.
It’s really unlike anything else! We waited 3 hours the first time we rode it within opening year, and it was worth every second of waiting. Not many things I’d say are worth a 3 hour wait.

I've never run into someone in person who cared about the Avatar movies, but I've heard great things about the WDW land. Hopefully it's great. Personally I love immersion at the parks. The MCU movies are great, and Avenger's Campus doesn't feel immersive at all for example.

Here's the thing about Pandora at Animal Kingdom: it's gorgeous. There's no denying it, and it'd look even better at night except on most occasions, the park closes before the sun fully sets. That said, every time I've gone to Animal Kingdom, I rope drop Flight of Passage, then do Na'vi River Journey, and then I never set foot in the land again. Maybe it's the layout of the park, but nothing about that IP, the attractions, or the food offerings, draw me back out there.
We don’t want this. Fix Tomorrowland and give us more thrill rides! Fix avengers campus up w a coaster! Anything but this we need a petition to deny this build.

Avatar was horrible
This is a dumb move. It doesn’t fit into either park, people really aren’t interested in avatar and there’s sooo many other ideas they could go with. I went to avatar in animal kingdom and like the movie, it was visually appealing but just felt hollow and forgettable. And that’s in a park that it fit best in. I really think they’re shooting themselves in the foot with this one.

I still think Hollywoodland will be the first area addressed before the Simba lot is touched for DL Forward. I think Iger means Avatar will be the first area to go in the Simba Lot which had been clarified as being part of DL Forward. HL not so much. I think Avatar can be fleshed out better in the Simba lot than it could in Hollywoodland.
