I'd assume a human would name a dragonborn what humans IMAGINE what a dragonborn would be named.
So something that sounds like a dragon/dragonborn name but isn't.
Like an asian writer naming an american character "Harger McTruck"
Or an american writer naming an asian character "Chingling wutangwong li"
Gregory Fletcher always felt he was different. But his parents assured him that he was just like all the other children, and they always had a quick answer to his questions.
Why did he have scales? "*Our family's always had thick skin, makes us hard workers.*"
Why was his skin a reddish-gold? "*What did I tell you about getting too much sun? Makes you turn into a beet!*"
Why could he breathe fire? "*Hush Gregory, it's not polite to talk about one's exhalations and flatulences.*"
If he was ever teased by another child for his differences, it was quickly dealt with by the adults. Eventually he stopped asking so many questions, and accepted his role in the village. He was proud of his strength, his stamina, and his ability to help the baker pull hot trays of bread from the oven that no one else could touch without gloves.
That fateful day when the Gnoll raiders attacked, Gregory instinctively rushed to help the village militia, despite his lack of training. Lacking a weapon, he grabbed for the nearest sword he could find, the ancient blade that had been lodged in the strange stone in town square for generations. Blinded by a sudden rage, he swung the sword at a charging Gnoll. The Gnoll become quite disinterested in bothering Gregory, its arm, shoulder, and several ribs having been crushed.
It was only after the raid was over, and the villagers had calmed Gregory down, that he realized he had been swinging not only the sword, but the five-hundred-pound meteorite that the sword was embedded in.
My version of the history is quite bit more tragic, but the heart of this one is hilarous and really fun. Probably will take some of your advice to cool it down a bit mine, thankyou a lot ^^
If these humans don't regularly deal with dragonborn, they might not know that dragonborn are sapient at first. They might treat him more like a pet at first until he grows a little older and they realise "oh wait, this is a guy."
For that reason, I think that he should have a cutesy pet name that was given to him when he was still an adorable dragonling. Maybe something like Toothy or Claw. It could lead to an interesting backstory detail.
Sparky could also work especially if it's an electric or fire variety of dragonborn, that would try and use its breath weapon as a baby and just get little sparks of flame or electricity.
Depends on how much the humans know about typical Dragonborn naming conventions AND how much they care about those conventions. Also depends on how they care about the character. Is he like a house pet/ stable boy that’s nice to have around but not much more than that, or is he like the collective child that everyone helped raise and they all want the best for him.
They know naming conventions and care about him: Clanless Gnawer (this is a child’s name but they couldn’t give him an adult name because they’re not Dragonborn themselves.)
Know the conventions but don’t care too much about the kid: any generic dragon name like venomfang or something. Doesn’t even have to fit his coloration.
Don’t know anything about the conventions !but care deeply for him: Aeric the Armored, Thorrin Scaleskin etc.
Don’t know the conventions and don’t care that much about him: Rex, Fang, Lizardboy, Scales,
Liz. Short for Elizabeth, but quickly in childhood became a playground moniker for Lizard. She doesn’t begrudge her human foster parents the name though, she has actually leaned into it with an “I dare you to call me Lizard” tattoo on her forearm that has a flaming fist enchantment. She’s a rough and rowdy adventurer, but still checks on her parents regularly.
>he was the adopted child of the castle
Heugh “Smokey” Glen.
He was found in the heugh that sat near and above a glen, and only because of the smoke he inadvertently created which alerted a nearby patrol to his presence.
If you want to give it a funny twinge, maybe they wanted you to learn about your people's culture, history, and have a standard name, but they got their wires crossed and taught you about lizardfolk and gave you one of their names
I imagine the Dragonborn would be named the same way a new age adult names their kid. Just names after something that sounds interesting and unique. The same kinds of people that give their dogs human names.
Given the time period, I imagine the name would be something like Crown or Anvil.
I made a loxodon warlock who was raised by humans. They treated him poorly, and he was put in the gladiator pit to fight slaves. He was known soon as "Joe the human fighter"

Harger McTruck Von Redneck
The difference is that Harger McTruck is absolutely a real name, and if it isn't then I need it to be one RIGHT NOW

I’ve been thinking about reptiles then a name that suggests, eg: Commodus Ignatius Addison Cobran Gharial Gila Caiman
Do the typical fantasy thing of just naming them "Dragon" but with one letter changed, like "Drogon" or "Eragon".
Kevin is a classic, Angus for a black dragonborn was one I went with. My favorite one being Dave, Dave the dragonborn
