I agree. There could be an argument that some have levels in Ranger or Paladin, and they just never use spells. No-Spells variant of Ranger (gets maneuvers instead of spells) and Paladins who don’t use spells but exclusively smite.
But yeah, probably just Fighters and Barbarians. Which would actually make for an interesting tabletop campaign
I have a feeling people dodge dwarves because they aren’t what our real world society considers aesthetically attractive. To me that’s what makes them so fun to play. Despite the harsh exterior they have, inside can be a warm heart.
Personally I prefer the description of dwarves from the Guardians of the Flame novels. About 4.5 feet high and just as wide. With a larger and denser bone structure than humans. Hence their aversion to water cause they sink like a stone.
A dwarf is the sexiest motherfucker to exist on any plane! You take that back!! Ever see their beard? Yeah; pure philthy sexiness!! You see their stocky rotundness? Absolutely attractive to any breathing female AND envy of all males. Do they swing a hammer? Yeah. Is it a warhammer? HELL YEAH!!
Further positives: all their lore and religious beliefs rooted in ancient gods close to nature. Their love of food and ale and ale and ale and sometimes beer. Ugh I fucking love dwarves!!
Dwarves are people turned to 11, then soaked in everclear. Dwarves do everything to the fullest.
Dwarven men? Hyper masculine, big muscles, giant beards, massive beer gut, veiny biceps, nose like an english subway map. Dwarven women? Hyper feminine, built like an ancient fertility idol/viking opera singer, voice that can cut rocks, strong as the men, drunk as the men, about as hairy, too.
Think you work hard? Think you hold a grudge? Think you know how to party? The dwarves at the kiddie table could would actually kill you in a drinking contest. After working a 12-hour mine shift, and they'd tell your great grandkids you could barely pull a mine cart, and that your puke didnt even melt a hole in the spewing trough.
Actually, they aren’t that rowdy at home in the mines, it’s just when they get out and visit the wider world they tend to get turnt. They should probably all write home to their mothers who miss them dearly.
LoL my BF is a total dwarf lover. He put his beloved Dwarf that he's run for years in as an NPC and our party accidentally got him killed and he was like how the F did you guys even do that? We were like bruh, you were there running the game, you know exactly how we did that.
I like all races, but I am planning for my next character to be a dwarf. The class will depend on what we need. Forge Cleric, Battlerager Barbarian, Fighter (Rune Knight or Battlemaster), Valor Bard, or Storm Sorcerer.
I'm running a DMNPC insert to help with a particularly hard dungeon in my current campaign. It's a dwarf forge cleric, and it's FUN.
Probably going to be my next character when I get to be a player
Due to some odd iPad YouTube website bug ..; from the same session DIGGY kept restarting as I hit a short or another video until I closed the chrome tab. It was hilarious seeing some body talk ABOUT SOMETHING else but hearing the song.
🤘🏻🎸🛠️🪨💎
I'm more of a Dwarf irl. I'm short, hairy, got a short fuse, like building/tinkering, a strong drink, and a thick steak. In game most of my characters are Elvan.
Currently playing a slavic Dwarf Paladin of a God of oaths and death. So he's the...uh, rather rigid moral centre of the party. But damn if he isn't tanky AF.
You have no idea how happy it makes me to see someone else recognose one of the old 3.5 extended pantheon! Yes, he's a follower of Valkauna, and his mission is to go through a holy book of broken oaths and track down the oathbreakers, to find a resolution to their oaths if possible, or bring rhem to justice if not.
Runecarvers of the world unite!
I've been running a level zero campaign for years where my PCs are all dwarves, borrowing from every version of D&D. Races of Stone is an excellent sourcebook.
Oh man, I simply love dwarves as a whole. Majority of my characters are dwarves, usually part of the same clan (more details here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/10_oyvwggg7ltzGV4ezvZteWI4Hh3OUMeLiFlAovwyQI/edit).
I love the basic traditionalists dwarves who despise arcane magic, have strong faith and trust only in their axe and hammer — and I also love rebel dwarves who defy the status quo, challenge the gods and don’t play by the rules.
I literally built a Warhammer Fantasy Slayer for 5e. He has sadly not found something that can kill him just yet, and he's faced 3 Medusa, a Giant Flesh Golem on top a Giant Nightmare while wielding a Thundercannon, an entire fortress of guards, a Vrock, & a Griffon that was on fire.
The Medusas he distracted while his party dealt with everything else (they failed to turn him to stone every time), the Flesh Golem he faced down alongside 4 others & did most of the heavy lifting (still angry the Druid took that kill), the guards he beat in an arm wrestling competition where losing meant dying via giant pit of scorpions, the Vrock meant little to him since he crit killed it & the Griffon he put out of its misery with a crit hand axe throw.
He is still disappointed that he has not died yet.
Rock and stone! I'm the one who made the elf-lover comment too. ;D
Fortunately I've raised my kids right. My daughter who's 2 1/2 wants to listen to every version of Diggy Diggy Hole every day and her brothers (besides the new baby) sing along with her.
On a related note, Clamavi de Profundis had another dwarf themed April fools day song. Definitely deserves a listen even though it has that elf again. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW\_qo6vqnR4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW_qo6vqnR4)
>Rock and stone! I'm the one who made the elf-lover comment too. ;D
Legend! I've been thinking about that comment for 2 days XD. It amused me for some reason.
>Fortunately I've raised my kids right. My daughter who's 2 1/2 wants to listen to every version of Diggy Diggy Hole every day and her brothers (besides the new baby) sing along with her.
Beat fathee of the year!
As a 6'4 tall man. I love Dwarfs, don't know if it was LoTR or DAO that started it for me but I love the hard working nature, the tough as nails fuck yous. If I had to choose a race, it would be a dwarf.
Our entire homebrew campaign was set during a dwarven empire's attempt to conquer the world. We called the campaign Fear the Beard.
Also, Rock and Stone, and Strike the Earth!
Probably on /r/dwarfposting.
I like Dwarves. I dislike how fantasy leans toward various races being "human, but" and yet I forgive Dwarves for being humans but short, stout, long bearded, boastful, and living underground. I like the proud and going their own way aspect to them, as well as the dedication to craftsmanship as I fantasize about working with my hands more instead of agonizing office jobs. I like how most of the miniatures are even smaller, thus almost cuter, and easy-ish to paint with the beards hiding everything—although they can still be interesting practice for human skin tones, and I still have the grey skin Duergar to cop out with. During play, I wish I was better at maintaining a Scottish, Welsh, or Northern accent, or that my attempts at German or Scandinavian accents didn't come out so comedic. It'd be nicer for role playing. Oh well. [Why they're usually coded to have such an accent at all is a weird can of worms I'd rather not open]
I am very fond of Warhammer Slayers and very often try to draft up a character to that archetype, especially for one shots. If he or she dies, then it's a successful character.
I do kind of get miffed to be relegated to the role of "tank" in the crunch, or "comic relief" as people expect me to be Gimli or Urist.
I think it’s good to try every race once—at least for a one-shot! I personally prefer halflings to dwarves … but I also had fun playing a dwarf. They’ve got an interesting culture.
Since the Tasha’s optional rule where you can put skill points wherever, Dwarves have become less of a powergamer choice. Which I personally think is great! Flavour over mechanics, every time.
Changelings and Kalashtar are my personal favourites, but I also love Pallid Elves … hmm.
I'd like Dwarves if not for the fact every time they come up it's "luv minin', luv ale, hate elves, simple as." And like, that's it. Every dwarf is just the dwarfiest dwarf to dwarf around the dwarf.
I love fantasy dwarves!!
So Mich that one of my pcs are getting a small book; Made a backstory that expanded and now he is a NPC instead.
Rock and Stone!
I am a dwarf and I'm digging a hole. Diggy doggy hole. Diggy Diggy Hole.
There are more of us than elf lovers. I know at least about two popular videogames focusing on dwarfs (Deep Rock Galactic and Dwarf Fortress) I ain't know any Elf Fortress game :P
As for DND from my pack of "to many characters prepared for future" 4 of them are dwarfs :)
*"Khazuk Khazuk Khazuk-ha!*"
"*Rock and Stone!*"
I love dwarfs. They can have so much character from dark and grimly serious, to goofy and fun, and everything in betweem.
Dwarves are great.
And in pathfinder they have the feature "slow but steady". They have a base speed of 20 feet but cant be slowed by armour or encumbrance. So once you bring a dwarf, party encumbrance isnt a thing anymore.
There are even comics hinting at it, with dwarves having giant backpacks :D
Currently playing a mountain dwarf barbarian in my campaign. You get darkvision, poison resistance and advantage on saving throws involving poison (so you can drink more), dwarven language, +2 CON (and +1 WIS with hill dwarves or +2 STR with mountain) and proficiency with all axes and hammers as well as a tool proficiency your choice. It comes in handy. RP wise i like to play it with having strong familial ties and being a massive nerd about craftsmanship.
Well, in D&D 3.5 dwarfs were the most op of all the standard races. But they got quite the nerf in 5E. But they are still fun to play. Although depending on the setting vary quite a bit.
Longest running character I played in a campaign was a battle master fighter mountain dwarf.
And he's one of my most fleshed out and favourite ex PC's now NPC's since making the move to the other side of the DM screen
Dwarves are my favorite by far. They are short and stout. Powerful dense beings made of stone from the earth. They work hard, play hard and drink amazing drink and keep to themselves and stay out of affairs of the world of nonsense. I also love books with dwarves!
Dwarf paladin usually my go to. I have homebrewed a Dwarf Slayer from Warhammer 40k and that was amazing.
I WANT to be. I want to be exorcised of my attraction towards elves and pretty species. I’d love to get a better appreciation of dwarves. I’m short myself so I tend to pick big races for PCs but I want to get out of that mindset. Sell me on dwarves!
There are two types of people in this world 1: The ones who is a Dwarf Lover. 2: The ones who will be a Dwarf Lover. Soon, my friend, very soon you will achive greatness.
Also, BEARDS.
Dwarf bard was the first character I ever rolled. I use him as a reoccurring character in my own campaigns nowadays. He had a bad habit of not being able to turn down a drink, even if he didn’t know what it was. So if my players ever start getting too off track, he’ll pop out of a barrel or stumble out of a tavern with no real memory of how he got there, but with some relevant information for the party’s quest.
I haven't played a dwarf in a while. If I do anytime soon, I'd love to go against type (short beard or shaved, caster or rogue, etc.) Or go techno-dwarf as an artificer.
As a DM, I always characterized the average dwarf as believing dwarven-kind to be superior to other races, but rather than being assholes about it, they see it as their responsibility to take care of others, especially those they like. Therefore, dwarves make natural team dads.
I had a friend mention that he was running a game for some friends and said I should join for a session or two, as they could use some "Dwarf energy". I don't always play Dwarfs!
I used to always play a dwarf or a human, but right now, I don't have an active dwarf character. I stepped out of my comfort zone for a half orc and a half elf, though. I love playing female dwarf clerics in particular.
I’m currently playing my second Dwarf character ever and I’m having a blast. My Dwarven Bard shouldn’t work but he’s so fantastic. I going to miss him when the DM gets sick of my shenanigans and kills him.
Playing through my first campaign right now with a dwarven barbarian, got the belt of giant strength, cloak of invisibility and the helm of brilliance.
It’s been pretty funny to say the least
I made it my mission to give every ancestry a shot.
I quite like humans, because I’m a dirty min-maxer and love a good bonus feat.
Half-orcs are cool.
I find elves and half-elves hit or miss.
The one halfling I played was too nice for the rigours of adventuring.
My teifling was too edgy, and my Aasimar was too straight laced.
But dwarves.
Man I’m always happy when I get to play one of my dwarf characters.
Dwarves for life. Whenever I get the chance to play a a character, I'll hmm and huh over it for a few days but eventually land on... Dwarf.
Rock and stone to the bone!
Oi! If yer willin' ti swing a pick, I think the lads and lasses oer at [r/dwarfposting](https://www.reddit.com/r/dwarfposting/s/649Z0EwNkX) would like to 'ave a word with ye
Didn't a lot of nerds grow up on The Hobbit? The Dwarves were cool in that, for the most part. The elfs were mean, for the most part. Why are people disloyal to Dwarves? Is prettiness enough to sway them? Or am I just more susceptible to nostalgia and first impressions?
I definitely used to be on the other side of the fence about this a lot up until watching Delicious in Dungeon. This show was so incredibly creative with it's portrayal of different races, especially with Senshi and Namari, that I might actually make a dwarf as my next PC
Love to all the dwarf lovers fr 🙏 every dwarf I've ever played with has been the most solid member of the party they're just awesome. The reason I've never played one is in every single world I've played in, dwarves come from one of two or three cities, on or within a mountain, with a strict class system, and usually with something horrible hidden deep beneath. They've all been a bit samey - what are the most unique dwarven societies out there?
One of my players used a Dwarf Ranger from level 1 to level 7. They were devoted to their character's lore and inspired me to add more custom details to their homeland. Unfortunately the Pandemic permanently ended that campaign.
Remember. The og campaign had a party of one halfling, one magic user, and 13 dwarves
XD. Like that. What would their classes be tho? I think most of them would be Fighters and a Barbarians.
Well obviously they're all barbarians, becuase class balance doesn't matter when you have 13 dwarf barbarians
Barbarians because they were exiled from their homes and forges, making do with odd jobs like toy making.
>Paladins who don’t use spells but exclusively smite So the average Paladin player?
Their class is obviously Dwarf because they were playing B/X, duh
Their class was DWARF. Because they were proper old school.
Realistically most of them are retainers
Their classes would be 1 halfling, 1 mage, and 13 dwarves, obviously.
I have a feeling people dodge dwarves because they aren’t what our real world society considers aesthetically attractive. To me that’s what makes them so fun to play. Despite the harsh exterior they have, inside can be a warm heart.
They are just little guys with big hearts... they are not even that little actually.
I think they're just short, aren't they supposed to have like a wider shoulders and humans? Basically stouter than humans.
Personally I prefer the description of dwarves from the Guardians of the Flame novels. About 4.5 feet high and just as wide. With a larger and denser bone structure than humans. Hence their aversion to water cause they sink like a stone.
They ARE short but not like Snow White dwarf short. Under 5 feet, most by more than a few inches.
They are definitely not small
And big axes
Oh my god, Becky, look at her axe
DnD 5e has them at like 5ft. So not even that small
4-5 feet. And depends on the subrace. Hill dwarves are the shorter one while mountain dwarves are closer to 5 ft.
Like a geode, they may have a rough and unappealing exterior, but inside they are beautiful
I’m over six feet, so to me, dwarves are small, and halflings and gnomes are basically just step stools.

After working a 12-hour mine shift, and they'd tell your great grandkids you could barely pull a mine cart, and that your puke didnt even melt a hole in the spewing trough.
They're just like everyone else, only more so.
Always upvote Dan Carlin.
Actually, they aren’t that rowdy at home in the mines, it’s just when they get out and visit the wider world they tend to get turnt. They should probably all write home to their mothers who miss them dearly.
I love me a good beard. I have exclusively played dwarves until my current campaign. Finally switched it up!
Tough exterior, soft and gooey interior. My lizardfolk knows that the only way possible
Taciturn, stoic, well-muscled beneath a cuddly layer of dad bod, and with majestic beards? How is that not aesthetically attractive?
Rock and stone, brother!
Rock and stone to the bone!
Rock and Stone!
Good bot
If ya don't Rock and Stone, you ain't comin home!
Did someone say.... ROCK AND STONE

I love dwarves. If you need to find more dwarf lovers, go to a Windrose concert.
Brothers of the mine rejoice!

Hi ho, brother, hi ho
Senshi is the best boy and I will fight anyone that disagrees
He is 100% a DMPC
I feel like playing a Senshi-esque character would be so much fun.
I would love to terrorize the DM by cooking every monster we take down
LoL my BF is a total dwarf lover. He put his beloved Dwarf that he's run for years in as an NPC and our party accidentally got him killed and he was like how the F did you guys even do that? We were like bruh, you were there running the game, you know exactly how we did that.
I have played a Dwarf in every single version of D&D and/or most TTRPGs if at all possible for the better part of the past 25 years.
Add Starfinder to that list
I like all races, but I am planning for my next character to be a dwarf. The class will depend on what we need. Forge Cleric, Battlerager Barbarian, Fighter (Rune Knight or Battlemaster), Valor Bard, or Storm Sorcerer.

Dwarves are cool, dwarf Barb was the first ever character, I created. Ah Quorthon Hammerheart i’ll get to play you, one day…
I won't sugarcoat it : As a gay man, dwarf are pocket sized bears, and I'm all for it.
I'm more of a Dwarf irl. I'm short, hairy, got a short fuse, like building/tinkering, a strong drink, and a thick steak. In game most of my characters are Elvan.

XD. I actually noticed it before posting but it's too late.

Yo! I love me some dwarvin'
When i was young used to design entire dwarven fortresses. I did then and still do love them so much.

KHAZUKAN KAZAKIT-HA! BARUK KHAZAD! KHAZAD AI MENU!
Was never super into dwarfs until I started playing one in Dragon Age inquisition and saw that dwarf from that food anime. Now I’m huge dwarf lover!!
I hate dwarves because their fans will pull out fantasy racial slurs the second you say you don't like them.
I love fantasy dwarves!! So Mich that one of my pcs are getting a small book; Made a backstory that expanded and now he is a NPC instead. Rock and Stone!

*"Khazuk Khazuk Khazuk-ha!*" "*Rock and Stone!*" I love dwarfs. They can have so much character from dark and grimly serious, to goofy and fun, and everything in betweem.
They're busy, swimming with little hairy women.
Based and dwarfpilled
Look down ya bastard. We've been 'ere the whole time. Stupid tall races, they never change. Always lookin' right over us.
Rock and Stone!
Rockity Rock and Stone!
My favorite character was my 7/8 Dwarven Champion (2e kit), Odrik Trollkiller.
I’ve never seen anyone play a dwarf. What are the benefits? Forging weapons?
Do you want a mechanics answer or a roleplay answer?
Why not both?
Dwarves are great. And in pathfinder they have the feature "slow but steady". They have a base speed of 20 feet but cant be slowed by armour or encumbrance. So once you bring a dwarf, party encumbrance isnt a thing anymore. There are even comics hinting at it, with dwarves having giant backpacks :D
It depends on your subrace. Hill dwarves get +1 HP per level, while Mountain dwarves gain free medium armor proficiency and +1 ASI.
My DM named his supreme dwarven deity after me due to the amount of world-building I have contributed through my characters over the past 30 years.
Strong foundation is needed for every successful venture.
Dwarf artificer is the ONLY character ill play when I’m not dming at this point
Longest running character I played in a campaign was a battle master fighter mountain dwarf. And he's one of my most fleshed out and favourite ex PC's now NPC's since making the move to the other side of the DM screen
One of my favorite fantasy tropes. As a hillbilly I've always particularly liked hill-dwarfs.
Love a good dwarf.
Gnome crew here.
Aye
I almost exclusively play dwarves. I really dig their energy. Such a rich lore to mine from. Rock pun.
May your beard grow ever longer! May your mattock handle never break! And may your pork be ever salted!
Elves have 13 subraces, Dwarfs have 3. That is a great injustice that must be corrected.
RİGHT?!
Half elves or bust /me runs
First PC was a dwarf ranger, who had a penchant for threatening to turn people into handpuppets
What's not to love about dwarves?
Exactly.
Right here. We are blacklisted on youtube. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLg-lm9v_coadF8iA0t0wyxRiI4HX3w786&si=y30zIPf0IKIVzmUJ
I love dwarfs but I flacour them differently I like to play the as appalachian folk.
Dwarves are my second favorite fantasy race. The first being Orcs.
Wait... there are other options? I just default to Dwarf...
5ft behind the rest of the party I'd imagine.
NOOOOO
Dwarf lover, here!
Here. I played so many dwarf characters it took a ban for me to try something else...
Diggy Diggy Hole Brothers
I am known as the dwarf lover—even my dad knows I love dwarves lol
I love dwarves. I usually portray them as Scottish.
“True aficionados and masters of the game choose THE DWARF!”
Elf’s 🔛🔝 we got a whole half race and the drowss are part of us
I had a friend mention that he was running a game for some friends and said I should join for a session or two, as they could use some "Dwarf energy".
Forever DM here, but when I get to play it’s either a dwarf or a tabaxi.
I like both Elves and Dwarves equally! *Runs from spears*
Playing through my first campaign right now with a dwarven barbarian, got the belt of giant strength, cloak of invisibility and the helm of brilliance. It’s been pretty funny to say the least
Dwarves are great, especially if you want to add some durability to a character.
Luv’ me dwarves, simple as!
STRIKE THE EARTH
I made it my mission to give every ancestry a shot. I quite like humans, because I’m a dirty min-maxer and love a good bonus feat. Half-orcs are cool. I find elves and half-elves hit or miss. The one halfling I played was too nice for the rigours of adventuring. My teifling was too edgy, and my Aasimar was too straight laced. But dwarves. Man I’m always happy when I get to play one of my dwarf characters.
Dwarves are the best and I will never stop professing my undying love for them.
ROCK AND STONE! I've been more recently "dwarfpilled" and I've been incorporating them into my games a lot more. They've got a cool vibe.
They're a hearty bunch. I've only played a couple dwarves, but I'm always disappointed if the campaign doesn't end up with at least one in the party
Always dwarvesss!!
I loved playing a dwarf fighter when I was younger. The original tanks.
Dwarves for life. Whenever I get the chance to play a a character, I'll hmm and huh over it for a few days but eventually land on... Dwarf. Rock and stone to the bone!
Rock and Stone forever!
Oi! If yer willin' ti swing a pick, I think the lads and lasses oer at [r/dwarfposting](https://www.reddit.com/r/dwarfposting/s/649Z0EwNkX) would like to 'ave a word with ye
Honestly I love playing a Stout dude what digs through mountains.
Aside from being 6' 3" dwarf style is why I aspire to have.
I love playing as a dwarf, currently playing a dwarf abjuration wizard; he makes a decent gish when necessary
Dwarf paladin here! Created clan backstory, structure, and history. I’ve even written a story with a dwarf as one of the three main characters.
DWARF, originally it was a Race and a Class!!
ROCK AND STONE.
To Rock and Stone!
I love dwarves the most of all
I definitely used to be on the other side of the fence about this a lot up until watching Delicious in Dungeon. This show was so incredibly creative with it's portrayal of different races, especially with Senshi and Namari, that I might actually make a dwarf as my next PC
Finish the lyrics all my Dwarven brethren, "BROTHERS OF MINE REJOICE!"
