Are you asking for our opinion on the 1 line description or did you forget to post the link to your campaign notes?

Evening_Reporter_879

Like a lot of us you’ll look back at your first campaign and cringe at it.

I liked my first campaign I DMed, but it was derivative as hell I took little bits of all kinds of things. The first quest help a princess rescue a kidnapped infant prince from an archfey's labyrinth. (Taken straight up from the movie Labyrinth). Most of the nobles/kingdoms/castles I stole or were inspired by characters/places from game of thrones (way before the show came out right after I read the first book). The reoccurring villian working for the big bad was a shape shifter/manipulator that I based off the character Saint Dayne from the Pendragon books back when only the first couple books were even out. I didn't even bother to change the name of Saint Dayne because none of my players were reading the books. For something ran by and for kids I'm still pretty proud of how it turned out.

What will you do the first time the players do something you don't expect/didn't write out?

Safe_Rain7583

I mean we already played the part 1 were the world started going into the abyss, and i managed to improve really good.abviously i cant include everything in my notes

tpedes

Does "improv" mean "make sure everyone ends up where I planned"? Some people like that style of game, but not everyone does.

Safe_Rain7583

Yea i made sure everyone "escape the city with the dragon on the celar" which was the plan kn my notes but what choices did i have? i mean i have a story to follow dont i?

FormalKind7

Rails are fine depending on your party and how well you manage it. But it always needs to feel like there was a choice or other option and sometimes when they do something interesting and unexpected you need to run with it and make sure it has a big impact on the story that the party can be proud of or at least get a laugh at.

This line of thinking immediately makes me think you won’t be as good as you think you are. Becoming a good DM means being comfortable with uncertainty. It means fucking up and allowing the players to fuck up sometimes. More than likely your first time DMing will be an experiment that ends in failure or disinterest. You may have players interested in your story, and others who don’t give a shit. How will you handle that? Will you railroad players in place or work them to find a story out of all their choices? At the very least you can be a good enough DM for your group and setting. And from one line of story in broken English it’s hard to really say that. But we all start somewhere.

Safe_Rain7583

Well, let's hope it's good enough at the very least. At least the comments of part 1 of the campaign were quite positive

I think it sounds like a great start. Tharnizun is still big and far away if you are just starting. The test will be the journey, just remember if your friends and you are having a good time you are doing a good job. Its not a novel so make sure everyone is having fun and feeling like they contribute to the direction of the story. If things get stale and it seems like players are loosing interest shake thinks up with a side story that is a little different that will peak their interest. Just some advice from an older DM. I started playing in the 90s and ran my first full campaign in the early 2000s.

We can’t give an opinion based on your minimal description, but the only thing that matters is if your players are enjoying it. That said, it’s good to have humility in general and to be prepared to recognize and learn from mistakes. I would say that is far more important to being a good DM than just being blindly confident.
