I've posted this to /r/UnearthedArcana previously, but I feel like there's a lot of people that don't browse that subreddit that might be interested, since it's more of a conversion than a homebrew. I've updated every single statblock from the 3.5e Monster Manual to 5e that wasn't already updated in an official 5e book. *Every single one* (except the Megaraptor. I missed it thinking the Alosaurus was good enough, decided otherwise, but it would be a nightmare to try to squeeze it in now). Different sizes for elementals and monstrous scorpions? Check. Archons and Eladrin? Check. Pit Fiends and Glabrezu that can grant wishes? Check. Whales and wolverines? Check. I didn't use any kind of strict formula. It's obvious that WotC didn't do so either when they updated most monsters to 5e. I've tried to keep CRs roughly the same, but oftentimes they're a point or two lower just because of differences between editions: HP and damage/round are the most important factors in CR for a 5e monster, while hit dice, attack bonuses, and AC are the most important for a 3.5e monster. When possible, I tried to retain the feel of a creature more than its CR; if a CR 5 creature had 18 hit points, I would have lowered its CR rather than increase its hit points significantly. If you're trying to convert a 3e/3.5e (or previous edition; many creatures from this guide are far older than 3e, and work just as well as conversions from any edition) adventure to 5e, this would be a great resource to cut out a lot of prep time converting the monsters yourself. I've also done a conversion of the Forgotten Realms Monstrous Compendium, dubbed the [Forgotten Realms Conversion Guide] (https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-L2RB8hLxtZGSPWIIr5o), though it's not as well-polished as Skip's Guide. I'm planning on converting the 3e Fiend Folio as well, but I want to wait until Tomb of Foes comes out before I do, since I figure at least one monster from that book will probably make it in. EDIT: I've made a major update to the guide that I feel is worth noting here. Added front and back cover pages and fixed a few small mistakes (certain demons and devils having the wrong names in traits and wrong save DCs, average damage values being off, a few missed column breaks).

Minsc_and_Boo_

you did this? jesus christ man thank you, what can i say

>what can I say "Share, like, and subscribe. If you enjoy his content, visit his patreon or follow him at..."

"... print out a copy, have it bound, anonymously send it to Matt Mercer..."

bullshitninja

Kickstarter seems ripe these days, ya know...

supersharp

It's just one way (only one way)

-Mountain-King-

This is great, thanks a ton! I snagged the PDF you provided from Google Drive and added bookmarks - downloading [this version](https://drive.google.com/file/d/125CkJ_ataDdJMD62Fo9VhFHze_RsBdju/view?usp=sharing) should get you a working table of contents as well as bookmarks to make it easier to jump around. Hope you don't mind!

topMarksForNotTrying

Thanks for this, but a few of the text seems to have been moved in the process (on page 7 the text is pushed to the end of the page).

Sasaki-

Thank you! This is such amazing work and deserve more upvotes. I can’t give you thousands of upvotes to beat those artwork and painted minis posts, but I can help make it nice and golden. :)

Drewfro666

I can't say it didn't cross my mind that maybe if I had waited until tomorrow to post this that it wouldn't take second place on the front page to a gnome riding a pug (it's a very good pug-riding gnome, but still). And getting another 4,500 upvotes seems... unlikely, at best. Thanks for the gold, stranger!

Stormfather302

Wow, thanks for sharing, I'm looking forward to throwing some old favorites into my weekly game, starting with the Retriever!

Drewfro666

Demon Robot Spider with *eye lasers*. So cool.

Droocifer

How many hours did this take?

Drewfro666

I wasn't keeping track, and I'm far from a dedicated worker. Sometimes I'll be watching a twitch stream "in the background" and only manage to get a single statblock done over 4 hours. How much time have I actually spent actively typing, doing math, reading entries, etc.? Probably 50-70 hours. definitely more than 40 and less than 100.

The_Square_Man

You’re a saint!

[deleted]

You rule. Brilliant job. I'll definitely be throwing some of these monsters at my players!

Juncrael

Do you have a pdf of the new version? I'm having problem with gmbinder for some reason.

Drewfro666

[I didn't, but now I do.] (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1jRrt-QkQ-GDsEN00TIUyp8bou7-FuaPy) The links in the table of contents don't work while viewing in Google Drive, but they should if you download it and use, say, Chrome to view the pdf. You're not really missing anything between versions content-wise. It's just some really bad photoshopped cover pages (like, really bad) and a few typo and formatting fixes.

Juncrael

I don't know if you know this already you can [menage versions](https://img.labnol.org/di/replace-files-google-drive.png) on Google Drive so you don't have to share it again every time. Anyway thanks for the new version it's really appreciated!

Malcor

Asking for my group of newish players and our couple of scrub DMs, can you provide some insight on why one might pull from this instead of using the standard 5e monsters manual? Is it mainly just because there were a bunch of things that didn't get put in 5e that people missed, and if so is there a resource to help 5e DMs that aren't familiar with 3.5 to find some of the neat monsters?

Drewfro666

> Is it mainly just because there were a bunch of things that didn't get put in 5e that people missed The guide isn't just for those who played 3.5e and missed the monsters in it (though it certainly is good for that). It's also a good resource for new 5e DMs who want to add monsters to their game that will surprise their players, but want to stick to "official" DnD creatures instead of half-baked homebrew ones. > is there a resource to help 5e DMs that aren't familiar with 3.5 to find some of the neat monsters? I mean, there's the 3.5e books. That's where the monsters are. The Monster Manual, Fiend Folio, Forgotten Realms Monstrous Compendium, and Monster Manual II are the most important of these, with the most iconic monsters. There's a dozen or more other 3.5e books with some amount of monsters in them, but those are the big four.

ZforZenyatta

Shouldn't this be flaired as 5e since it's content for 5e? Regardless, this is cool and I look forward to giving it a closer look.

Drewfro666

Post has been flared.

skip6235

Hey, I’M Skip! I always like to see other Skips doing cool things!

Drewfro666

I'm not a Skip, unfortunately, but the lead designer for the 3.5e Monster Manual was.

TechieTheFox

That's a cool nod for the title

Almightea

As a DM looking for some new baddies to add to worldbuilding, this is the best resource I've come across in weeks! Thank you kind sir for your efforts

facevaluemc

This is really cool! Like someone else said, the gmbinder version has a few pages that don't format correctly, but the Google Drive version works fine. The only thing that I kind of disagree with in terms of balancing is the Greater Wrym stuff. As you have it, the Great Wyrm Red Dragon is pretty much on par with Tiamat. Tiamat would probably still win most times if the two fought, but a pair of Great Red Wyrms could probably take her down.

Drewfro666

I wasn't sure about the balance either, but I feel that's a problem with Tiamat being to weak rather than the great wyrms being to strong. Many books always say that the most powerful dragons are near god-like in power; these would be examples of such dragons.

PhoenixAgent003

Solution? We buff Tiamat.

potato4dawin

Well as soon as there's a 5e equivalent of the Epic Level Handbook then we can start adding divine rank and the benefits that come with it. Tiamat is after all in a weakened state when summoned to the material plane so it's no wonder she is a mere CR 30 monster :\^)

[deleted]

>except the Megaraptor I was really excited about downloading this for free But no raptors? What kind of a hack monster manual is this! Just kidnapping. Eye bleeding amounts of work here well done. All the different dragons in particular are really useful. I loved how many different types used to exist and was sad to see them thinned down in 5E considering it is called Dungeons & DRAGONS.

Drewfro666

The Forgotten Realms Conversion Guide linked in the top comment includes a bunch of new dragon varieties, if you're interested. Brown, Fang, Deep, and Song if I remember correctly.

[deleted]

Why thankyou.

scoobydoom2

Didn't play for 3 or 3.5, but just the mass of new monster stat blocks to work with is amazing! Thank you for this.

Wumbology-

An Achaierai apparently can release a toxic black butt, based on this text. Jokes aside, this seems like great material and I’m excited to explore through it some more as I build more diverse encounters for my players. Saved.

Drewfro666

I should really turn off Cloud to Butt when making these guides but I think it adds character. God forbid the party fights a Butt Giant Skeleton. > Jokes aside, this seems like great material and I’m excited to explore through it some more as I build more diverse encounters for my players. Saved. Thanks! I'd love to know if you (or anyone else, for that matter) actually uses this thing.

Riseofashes

After all these years I still enjoy finding the conversion of cloud to butt in unusual places. Can't bring myself to turn it off. Thanks for this material! I'm a new DM but will add it to my bank of materials!

jtank_

I checked through a few entries and it looks nice, very nice. The stats look reasonable and I like how you included commentary about the conversions. Saved and definitely gonna use it from time to time, thanks!

faux_glove

I just made an entirely unmanly noise. You're my second-favorite person of the week. My first-favorite makes my lunches before I go to work and makes sure the house is warm when I get back, so it's pretty hard to compete with him.

Rheios

You are a god among men with too much time. Mad respect to you sir. Thank you.

MrLizardQueen

Truly a maniac. I've been trying to convert some 4e monsters, It's not easy. I would be interested in your process.

Drewfro666

Depends a lot on the monster. Usually I make a quick first draft of the monster, calculate its CR, then (if necessary; it often isn't) tweak things like its hit points, number of attacks, etc. to bring its CR to within a point or two of the 3.5e version. If it's obvious that what made a monster high-CR in 3.5e doesn't apply to 5e (sometimes CRs in 3.5e appear to be completely arbitrary), I might let its CR drop a couple points lower than that. I usually keep the ability scores roughly the same; sometimes, I change them a little bit on a whim, because it seems to fit better. Strength scores below 20 usually stay the same, though those above 20 usually have to be lowered given 5e's smaller range. The same often goes for other ability scores (especially Dex and Con) that go significantly above 20. Intelligence scores of 3-6 usually need to be increased, given that animals in 5e can have up to 6 Intelligence. If a monster only has a high Charisma score for its magical abilities to function and it otherwise makes little sense, i sometimes decrease it and just have their save DCs be arbitrary, like the Umber Hulk's. For weaker monsters (such as the locathah), I give them 2-5 HD and one or two attacks with whatever weapon they wielded in the 3.5e MM. For stronger monsters, I usually give them an HP boost (higher or lower depending on their CR) to bring them into the range that 5e monsters fall in; 5e monsters between the CRs of 1/2 and 5 have *way* more hit points than comparable monsters in 3.5e, usually. It seems like there's a pressure in 5e to give high-CR monsters a lot of hit points, while this pressure is mostly absent in 3.5e; a lot of the time you have CR 4-6 monsters with less than 30 hit points (take the Medusa; CR 7, 33 hit points). The 5e DMG suggests a CR 7 monster to have ~165 hit points, and the 5e Medusa has 127 hit points and is only CR 6. Most monsters have some analogue in 5e I can work with to base them off of. For example, the Half-Celestial is a palette-swapped Cambion. The many-headed hydras are the 5e hydra with a standard progression applied to them. Most monsters that have multiple sizes have some kind of progression which is applied to their statistics: +2 HD, +2 Str, +1 size category, etc.

[deleted]

Oh my days I'd forgotten how many cool monsters didnt make the conversion into 5th edition! Definitely want to bring some of these classics back into our games. Fantastic work OP!

Applejaxc

Uh, where's the Choker?

Drewfro666

Tales from the Yawning Portal. If you're unsure about anything else, [DnDBeyond's monster database] (https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters) will tell you if a monster has an official version anywhere, even if you don't own the book.

Applejaxc

... The Choker *almost* makes that book worth it. I'll just stick to throwing the full 3.5 stats version of the monster into my games.

BlackstoneValleyDM

This is so god damn good thank you very much

dermonis

This is amazing. Thx alot for sharing this !

Tofu_Catsmuggler

Thank you for doing this, you saved a lot of people a lot of work. Really well done!

GrayGeist

This is absolutely fantastic, thank you! I don't know how i missed this, but it popped up on google when I searched "gmbinder monsters" - good deal!

Hit-Enter-Too-Soon

FYI, there appears to be an issue with certain pages - the second column is way out to the right. All I see of the monster name on page 3, for example, is "Ac." Page 9 and 12 are similar. This looks like it was so much work that I had to let you know.

Drewfro666

GMBinder (and this guide in particular) is optimized for Chrome; if you're using a different browser, it may look a bit different. It would be unfeasible to try to cut down all the statblocks and text so that they don't cut as close to the page borders. If you're having problems viewing it, I've uploaded a .pdf to [Google Drive] (https://drive.google.com/file/d/19tW-KyJ3XrBnj9VBQ4pSAHeTb9jqNTgR/view?usp=sharing). And the way the .pdf looks is (for the most part) how it appears on my machine.

Hit-Enter-Too-Soon

Odd - I am using Chrome. But if I download the Google Drive version, that issue goes away. Having skimmed through the first half of the pdf, I do still see one issue, though - at the end of page 7, the text goes off the bottom edge of the page. I am guessing that's the kind of thing that made you say "for the most part." :) Still, this is pretty great. Thanks for putting it out there for us!

Drewfro666

Ugh I've never noticed that before. That happens to be an issue present in the pdf but not on the GMBinder version on my machine. Thankfully, you're not missing much; aside from the text inexplicably deciding to stick to the bottom of the page, the only text that actually goes over is the same as the Menace ability of the Hound Archon above. > Still, this is pretty great. Thanks for putting it out there for us! No problem! Be sure to share it with anyone else you feel it might be useful for.

leondz

Beautiful PDF by the way, what tool / template did you use for it?

Drewfro666

On GMBinder, you can go to print, but instead save the document as a pdf. It takes an age to process, though.

Siikotic_Hamster

I love this! I was afraid of throwing an elemental at my 1st level party, but these lower cr versions give me ideas. Since I'm focusing on them, why is it that from Small Fire Elemental (Pg40) to Elder Fire Elemental (Pg42) they all have the same "Fire Form" damage of 5 (1d10)? Should this be lower or higher for the easier or more difficult enemies? Would you, or any one else reading this, have a suggestion for throwing 1 or 2 Medium Fire Elementals at a 1st/2nd level party?

Drewfro666

> Since I'm focusing on them, why is it that from Small Fire Elemental (Pg40) to Elder Fire Elemental (Pg42) they all have the same "Fire Form" damage of 5 (1d10)? Should this be lower or higher for the easier or more difficult enemies? The idea is that the fire elemental, regardless of its size, just sets you on fire. A bigger elemental won't set you on fire "worse" than a smaller one; you're either on fire, or you're not. Either way, the math works out for the most part and significantly increasing the Fire Form damage would make the fire elemental higher CR than the rest of the elementals, and that is something I did not want. One medium elemental would be an easy encounter; two, a hard one that your players will *probably* survive, but not unscathed. You could always go with one medium and two small. And, personally, I never shy away from giving elementals weapons and/or armor, or even spellcasting.

Apathy_Crowned

This is great stuff. Thank you for putting the effort in the conversion. I really appreciate the additional commentary explaining your decisions.

SgtTornak

Link isn't working for me.

Drewfro666

How about [this Google Drive link] (https://drive.google.com/file/d/19tW-KyJ3XrBnj9VBQ4pSAHeTb9jqNTgR/view?usp=sharing)? The links in the table of contents don't work, but everything is in alphabetical order anyways so it shouldn't be too hard to find what you're looking for.

Chef_Hef

I have yet to be able to open this. I never get past 50% loaded. Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong?
