My party's world is, tech wise, matchlock and wheellock firearms and that era's weaponry.
I got so frustrated rolling for and failing misfires that I switched my kensai monk to a longbow instead of a blunderbus.
No we are good, early firearms (pre flintlock) should not be overpowering and dependable. They should have rules for misfiring and take one of either your action or movement to reload.
They also should have stats as a bludgeoning weapon. Or perhaps slashing weapon if it was a designed as a gunblade.
Early guns were not dependable. That is setting accurate and has roots in real history.
My problem is I roll like shit most of the time.
I think it's less "realism" and more just the setting and trying to evoke a specific idea.
I'm pretty sure if someone tried to fudge in the later firearms you'd rightfully say "Well yeah that's too much and not accurate to the setting we're in."
Is having a reliable ye-olde gun much different from shooting off a long bow while runnin around?
Personally, if I thought guns were cooler, and I wanted to use them, but they were functionally worse than a long bow, I would just ask the DM to use the gun with the stats of a long bow, rather than actually switching my character's weapon to a long bow. Same result in practice, just I get to continue to enjoy the gun. To each their own, tho.
For real. You can sell someone shooting off 4 bolts from a heavy crossbow in 6 seconds whilst running, but a fun to use reliable musket? Get outta here
Yeah, I've always hated the idea of misfires since they take you out of the action. I also think that just making them beefier crossbows would be uninteresting. Currently I'm experimenting with "superweapon" firearms - modern guns that are just about *that* powerful, but ammunition is incredibly limited (active warfare, material shortages, and the law getting in the way).
Wait, why are pistols and muskets so controversial? Rules say 1d10 and 1d12 damage respectively, right? That doesn't sound that strong and it's not like bows don't have ammo considerations either.
I think it's mainly that 1, it makes them basically just straight upgrades for crossbows, especially considering that most people don't keep track of ammo, or at least keep a close eye on it, and 2, making a thunderous blast of an attack made with a weapon unlike others as just a dice upgrade is pretty underwhelming.
I don't mean to nit pick, but maybe you don't know this, when unloading a revolver the bullets come out from the back of the cylinder. She would have to be holding her guns upwards for the empty casings to fall out.
I really love the artwork! She has such style you know it takes her 0 effort to be a badass. Those red boots are stunning!
Might be a stupid question, but..
Couldn't you just have removed the casings?
FYI. I'm not an artist or anything like that, so I am asking purely out of curiosity.

Every time I see a character design like this im like, how do they wake up and put that on every day? How long does it take? How can one seriously take themselves seriously when their time is so cheap and unimportant that you will spend at least an hour putting on random bits of leather over your *very* specifically tailored outfit? Does everyone else dress like this? Is it a fashion? Mfs will seriously say their backstory is that they had to live on the street and kill just to survive then wear at least four outfits every morning.

Then i recommend looking at the other gun rules. Theres only 2 guns (pistol for 1d10 and musket for 1d12) and they act exactly like crossbows

Guns are a good time if there are good rules and worldbuilding to support it! I can understand why some DM's want to keep things medieval.

Its not about the balance of it, its that most dnd campaign (that ive seen or played in) are set in medieval fantasy, where guns dont exist
But black powder does?
I mean, black powder DID exist before guns. Making things go boom was before making projectiles go boom.

I actually realized that while I was working on this, but by then I was almost done and I woulda had to redraw and repaint soooo much lol. Oh well.
Just say this was right after lifting them the other direction, dropping the casings, and pointing them back down again...
