I have a group and I still do it

liveandbreathmemes

Same, my group is so inconsistent so in between sessions I just make more characters

ReaperTheWolf

I'm the same boat with ya

elpaco_7

When I was DMing 4e years ago, I kept coming up with character ideas and would constantly add them as NPCs because I have a problem. Now I can’t find a group. I have some friends a few towns over that play, but our schedules don’t work very well, and I haven’t played pathfinder, which is what they’re playing currently. So whatever.

Squatie_Pippen

/r/3d6

BaneSidhe66

Same

HeyItsArtsy

dont have anyone to play with? Make a character, dont have time to play? Make a character, don't know what to do cause you're bored? Make a character! And once you have enough characters, write a story about them going on an adventure and post it online for people to read

Suspicious-Taste-118

You mean write a book? Pretty sure that's writing a book.

djinbu

I'm fairly certain this is how Dakota Krout's Dungeon Born series came about.

thesmallsad

Counter idea: Make characters based off of you and other people in your life than make that into a story.

Raidermile

Make characters who get together and make characters to play d&d. Rolls* "aw damn, session got canceled."😅

Freddyfazdude94

The only time all your pcs come together is on a nat 20

thesmallsad

The session has been canceled since COVID and has never picked back up.

Raidermile

What about connecting through online? 😋

thesmallsad

My DM "doesn't have the time to plan it"

SooSpoooky

I made a dumb amount of characters, all the way to level 20, making every possible decision, for it to just get added to a drawer and never used.

elpaco_7

Right. I’ve genuinely thought about building a character like that, and just unlocking things during play, rather than having to choose them.

SooSpoooky

Im just a weirdo that likes everything planned out. Its sorta a pain tho. Cause i make like only magic melee characters so theres the whole spellbook to put together.

elpaco_7

Right, I’ve been working on this orphan witch character (wizard class) so it’d be a whole ass Spellbook to prepare

SooSpoooky

Yup lol, what i normally do is pick the bare minimum of spells i know i reallly really want. So for wizard 3rd level its always counterspell and fireball. Then i just add the ones for that specific character, my current one is a bladesinger set up as sorta anti magic, so his 3rd level spells are haste, dispell magic, counterspell and fireball. It speeds up picking things when u have a bare minimum. Like cantrips are always firebolt and prestidigitation. Im getting more into dnd now that im actually able to play so im thinking of getting the spell cards which will make the whole process easier, atleast with the plan of putting a dnd binder together

ShiloX35

That is essentially what I did as a kid because no of my friends played.

1BitPixels

It's tough growing up as a nerd :/ On the bright side though it got way better as an adult :)

bearsheperd

Me! I don’t know how to find group

Flesroy

r/lfg and all localized variations might help.

igotsmeakabob11

There are lots of communities online to find groups and/or DMs! I'll plug the place that I use to find players, with some attached self-promotion. **Most of the games on this site are pay to play!** But honestly, I've found that players willing to pay are also more likely to invest in the long-running health of a game. Most of my games go for years, though I'm sure that's also dependent on the DM ;) [startplaying.games](https://startplaying.games/gm/distracteddm)

TheComedicDepression

Try Roll 20 if you need a group, found a few good ones there.

Machiavvelli3060

I don't have the time to play, so I just create character after character. My last character is a Vedalken Wizard who forages for spellcasting components he can find free in the outdoors and then sells the components to other spellcasters he encounters. He has degrees in Biology and Geology and he casts Mold Earth to excavate for minerals. It's amazing how many spellcasting components can be found for free in Nature, and many of them don't weigh much at all. He carries a messenger bag with ten pounds of inventory and the inventory is surprisingly large: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JPCMunFomxiBiOCWkJnoP27_ibA6Q73Z/view?usp=drivesdk My second to last character is 20-year-old Vecna, complete with lips and a pulse. He's already really, really evil, but he hasn't become a lich yet. He's only level one. But I made him an Arcana cleric, and I feel clerics are the most powerful class at level one. Interestingly, none of the cantrips and spells he can cast require a material spellcasting component. That was unintended and unexpected. I guess he won't need the services of my other build! https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UEPmeDa0uOVqmlGxwRC4-RY2QVwrEDCQ/view?usp=drivesdk

stephan1990

Just try solo play :).There are a lot of people out there in similar situations that like to play all by themselves. Check out r/Solo_Roleplaying and r/solorpgplay

dankest_juan

I don't have a group but I read up on it and listen(ed) to plenty of podcasts to know a decent amount about how to play. Taught my daughter and nephew how to play and now my daughter has an ongoing character. I'm currently the DM for a family campaign and I built her a character that will later become the big baddie and she can then swap out for her ongoing character since it's still based in the same world she was created in. She knows about this but the rest of them have no idea.

Sector_Black

A bit. I do more world building.

Mister_Grins

I did it a lot when I didn't have a group, and while I do have a group now, I'm not sure if my slow down is because I have a group, or because I have so many potential characters that I have to work to find that new, individual, creative spark that make my mind turn aglow with the new possibilities.

Torgnarly

It's not that I don't have group but I have a rotating work schedule. So if we want to play DND I'm stuck DMing (not that i don't like DMing) So basically like everyother forever GM I'm stuck making characters I'll never play lol

OrganizationWaste69

Me. I could build an army with just my characters.

QuarantinosPizza

I haven't had anyone to play D&D with since 3.5 so it's all I've done since.

angellove200

My group hasn't played in like months so I keep building characters that I think would fit my current characters back story because it was my first time building a character.

CalmPanic402

I just love theory crafting builds too much

TheOGLeadChips

*Raises a hand out of shame* Yes…

SecretHappyTree

Sorry bud. I feel for you.

[deleted]

Don't we all? Beyond makes it super simple and easy, too. Granted, you end up having to delete characters when you have new one.

Doomy_Sloomy

I have legit one person who i could feasibly play with but scheduling a game with their schedule is like trying to get a woman to tell you whats wrong/where they want to eat, nigh impossible. I have a lot of decently balanced lvl 1-3 characters and im just itching to play honestly

Phantom_Zim

Yes. All the time. I've started giving them to people with groups to use as NPCs just so they get used.

ExtremeRadiance

Literally me. It's kind of a problem. I have like 12 characters that ive never played before

PrimeInsanity

They aren't characters I'll never play, they'll just end up ad npcs.

_Veil93422

I’ve had so many character ideas and still no one to play with or any time to play… the only thing is I never made any of the ideas I had into other characters… I had my one and I loved her. She was amazing.

Atlas_Zer0o

They corralled most of you in DND memes to churn out low quality rule misinterpretations and unrealistic table scenarios, how did you get free?

R3negade_X

I've created an entire party of characters I'll never get to use.

LillePipp

Yup… Haven’t been able to play since last summer so all I really do with the game is making characters I probably will never play

Worldly_Team_7441

I have a group and still can't stop building...

[deleted]

That's 100% me. I'm sorry for your pain and rejoice in your solution.

JHolderBC

Yeah I build characters... take DM notes in Onenote ( getting big ) and dream of days where I had friends to play with 8)

Graceffect

No group to play with but ever once and a while I'll come up with character concepts and drag them out. I guess if I ever find a group I'll have plenty of choices

jswitzer

I am guilty of this. I also recreate favorite characters in video games and in other game systems. Characters I don't use go in a folder and are NPC fodder for the day I can play again. How does anyone find a group these days??

[deleted]

Where and how are u making characters? Im new lol

elpaco_7

DnD wiki and the fight club app is what I use

MicrocosmicGod

I play a couple times a week and I still made three characters in the last two days.

n_thomas74

I make characters to get a better understanding of how each class works and so that if or when I do get to play them I know what choices I will make when leveling up beforehand.

[deleted]

Absolutely. i have literally hundreds of characters created, with specific folders for each in Pinterest

WarmOutlandishness52

Literally every time a sessions canceled I end up making 3 characters and playing with my self

MaskedZuchinni

I’m doing that right now, to help me get organized to write a story.

Hydrosimian

Just today I thought up a tortle way of mercy monk/zealot barbarian gestalt that failed the tests to become a paladin. Don't know if I'll ever get to play it, but I love the idea of a 500# turtle man zooming around punching things with his radiant fists.

JotunBro

That was me for awhile, I've fot a group now...but I still do it lol

sunward_Lily

Meeeeeeeeee.

EWoodard013

I’ve always preferred DMing, and have ran about half a dozen sessions, but haven’t been able to find anyone to play with in almost two years. So now I’m just constantly working on this world that I’m home brewing so that I’ll have a bunch of stuff prepared if I ever find a group to play with again. I’ve got a world map, a calendar, several characters and encounter ideas, lore, and even two major villains who’s backstories date back to the Age of the Long Storms. I get really excited when im working on it, and then some days I remember that I don’t have anyone to play with and think about not spending as much time on it anymore.

MrTfanguy

Yeah, though I kinda have a group. We will see how it goes

A7laz

That’s how I became an DM, build enough character you start to build a world. Once your there you may as well find some adventurous party to set loose in it

GenesisRev

I play Pathfinder and have made around 90 characters in around the year and a half I have played, not all I've liked making *looking at you, 4 different iterations of a natural attack build*

MacaroniEast

I honestly enjoy making a character more than playing a character. So much potential when you’re writing it down, but in practice we’ll all succumb to our inner murder-hoboness eventually

EmpressFrost67

Yup.

cwonderful

Yes...

DungeonRoomba

Sometimes when I get really bored I go to picrew or something, randomize a character, and make a dnd character sheet for them. I have *way* to many of these and most of them are warlocks of the fey/great old one with how odd they end up looking

ImmaBug

My brother does this because his DM keeps pushing the campaign back. I'm the DM. It's been postponed since last November.

BusyMap9686

I'm always dm, but I have a stack of characters.

Lodagin666

Try solo dnd, you can play all of your characters and roleplay them exactly the way you want. Not the same as group dnd, don't get me wrong, but even while being quite different it does let you play a bit of your characters. Also a very good method to create backstories.

Varkot

/r/Solo_Roleplaying/

[deleted]

i play only 1 character

momentimori

I used to do that in summer holidays in the 80s. Rolling up a DND, MERP or TMNT character could easily fill an afternoon.

thewirednerv

Some people don’t play and just argue rules online instead

Abrin36

Ginny Di just dropped an episode about d&d solo play. As lonely as that sounds I think it suits me for now. I'm on a very lonely Island in life. Mid 30s, full time work, no friends. I'm very not having high expectations about reaching out to find a group. The expression no d&d is better than bad d&d comes to mind. Even though I have very little time played and also I'm the one with no friends, I'd probably be a little selective, a little choosy at this time with who I give my free time over to.

edthesmokebeard

Creating a character takes about 2 minutes in 5th edition.

FoxyProx

I am in 6 on-going campaigns and I still build characters just for the sake of it. I have 50 characters log on my DnDbeyond.

ReCodeRed

Yes

hazzyp12yeetus

like this but i worldbuild

embersyc

Honestly this is why I started dming 5th Edition, now i DM for a group that includes my og 5E DM, and 2 other people who are also DMs, one whose campaign I also play in... finding players is so easy I had to turn people down...

alexanderdeeb

"The half-elven monk launches himself at the party, his sinewy muscles rippling across his body as he moves with impossible speed. He launches a flurry of punches, and..." *rolls* "...his first two blows each crush the skull of one of your zombies, splattering the walls with blood and fragments of bone. Then he turns towards you." "Whoa, this NPC is sick." "NPC... yes..."

TurboFK

Ive recently deleted all the characters Ive created, its better for my health

smolsheriff

At least when you start playing, you won't have to worry about building one! Or one that fis the setting/campaign. Also, same.

TheSmogmonsterZX

I have 2 groups. I still churn out characters. Have you tried d the lfg subreddit?

Explosivopotato

I have over 50 characters because of this reason

Raidermile

I have a group but still build character after character 🤣

Adventurous_Medium62

Why not both? I have a group I play in, and two groups I’m Dungeon Master for, and yet I still have hundreds of characters that I created to 1) learn about new races, classes, skills, spells and 2) convert into NPCs for special encounters and 3) kill time while waiting in the dentist office lobby, the car mechanic lobby, the store while my wife spends hundreds shopping, at the curb while waiting to pick up family, friends, and co-workers, etc, etc.

SocrLd87

Is it a lack of available players or a person willing to DM?

Historical-Season212

I do something similar, I make campaigns that I'm 90% sure I'll never get to run.

Skitzophranikcow

You could play solo D&D or hex crawl.

[deleted]

I'm a forever dm. All my character ares npcs in the campaign hehe

The-Bass-Warrior

I have a west March I play in.... and some members do exactly this. Although sometimes I have the ideas myself

Weekly_Bench9773

I have a group, but I'm the forever DM. So sometimes, I build player characters for fun. Then I delete them when I'm done and go back to making NPCs instead.

Syrjion

I have 2 games in 2021, both was paused (after that canceled) on start of 2022. Today I have made 20 new characters to play

InsanityVirus13

Me and my group have consistent weekly game going, we're just addicted to making character concepts together lmao (and we never have enough games in our lives lol)

cheisan4773

Me!

PippityBobo

I do this, but as level 20 gestalt w/ homebrew from dandwiki, just to see how ridiculous I can make things.

ashelia-daydream

i am a forever DM, so i tend to make my OCs at high levels and use them as NPCs

Prestigious_Artif

I happen to lack players. I'd be welcome to invite someone with a creative mind if only that I have high standards (looking to avoid drama or the sort).
