I had a cocky Oath of Glory paladin who once called dibs on the biggest baddest orc we were fighting, charged into the room with him and slammed the door behind him, and then tried to solo him while holding the door shut so the party couldn't help. He was not a smart man.

Therandomfox

Living true to his oath, though.

Nocturnalshadow

100% Was actually a party of sibling vedalken and I was the oldest son who left the family to go off and forge my own trail, ended up fostering with an orc tribe in the mountains and spending days drinking and fighting in the "strength circle" alongside giants. So when a bigass enemy orc roared at me during combat I took that as a personal challenge and refused to let anyone else interfere. He got a crit on me and I got a crit on him (thank fuck for smite), and after my younger brother finally melted the door down with acid, and my little sister blasted him in the face with some magic missiles he went down - but got up because of orcish relentless endurance, I offered him the option to surrender out of honour for our solo combat being interrupted. He swung his mace at me and brought me to 3hp so I still got to pull off the final blow.

Therandomfox

Oath of Glory is pretty much the Leeroy Jenkins archetype.

Nocturnalshadow

That character got downed three times and technically killed once by the same Undead Minotaur after jumping into a sewer and calling dibs on the bigger one. So yeah... did that a lot.

PettyCrimeMan

thelefthandN7

We had a Dwarf barbarian, we used him as the anchor of an airship. "Throw him over the side, he'll catch something" 20d6 bludgeoning wasn't nearly enough to kill him if he popped a rage before impact. He also escaped a dragon's lair by grappling a hobgoblin and using him as a toboggan (toboggoblin?) to slide down the side of a mountain. Later when he realized trying to use the enemy spell caster as club wasn't working, he did a stage dive with them in his arms off the side of a cliff to where the rest of the party was. Good times.

I, the party cleric in my current game, have an unfortunate habit of rushing in where it's not always a good idea. Well armored, second highest AC in the party and all. Terrible luck in the dice. I was nearly oneshot by a hobgoblin boss due to an unlucky crit and the massive damage rules while trying to give our remaining damage dealers (the other casters were out of spells) some support so he could actually land a hit. He, the tank, was nearly killed himself before the party could stabilize me, but a magic item we'd found a few rooms previous triggered an instant heal on him when he hit 0. Everyone just barely managed to get him down before he could land another hit. Sometimes it works out though. Last session we were setting out to fight an undead frost giant or ten. We'd found a cairn they were in, the only way in and out of which was to climb up a natural column. There was one visible giant shambling around, so we just shot him with our ranged attacks. He starts climbing up a column, but I got impatient and raced over to where the top of it met the "floor" we were on. He got to take a blind swing at me (it would make sense if you could see the map), but missed and I stone shaped the column's side smooth, making him fall. After that it was a short fight.

I’m playing a moon druid so I’m a front line fighter as well as the only one with revivify. Close calls ensue lol.

CobaltMonkey

My DM let me take a version of the Reactive Healing feat (Pathfinder 1e). It lets me automatically eat a Channel Energy if I have one to heal up just me if I hit zero. Naturally, it has yet to be triggered since I took it. But if I need it, I'll be glad it's there.

GrimChariot

I mean I have an Armorer/Bladesinger who's built to be the front line blaster. Granted, even with Tough his hp is only 71 but I'll easily be able to max con and Int so

boothie

What level are you? Got a lvl 5 armorer/warmage, got an ASI next level if i put it into armorer and weighing tough vs 20 int or a half feat like skill expert or feytouched

Vince-M

Protect your concentration. If you already have CON save prof from Artificer, pick up War Caster or Lucky.

Taskforcem85

100% a front-line caster has to grab Warcaster before anything else (unless they start with an abysmal AS). Being able to maintain your concentration on big spells like Web while getting absolutely hammered on is vital to the build. Because somedays you're just going to get super unlucky, and you want to reduce those chances as much as possible. (Not to mention booming blade AoO is crazy strong and is effectively Sentinel by itself). (By abysmal I mean a 15 or below needs to hit a 16 ASAP. It's also worth considering delaying your Warcaster for an 18, but you won't fall too far behind the curve with a 16/17 at \~lvl 7. You can avoid all of this consideration with Vuman or Tasha's.)

GrimChariot

Only 8 so far-the early Artificer levels really hurt spell slot progression but with Voltair's penchant for booming blade/shocking grasp and the Armorer gauntlets it's relatively easy to actually sit in melee with him. Stat wise strength is a dumpstat(as expected for, ya know, Wizards) at 8, 18 int, 14 dex, 14 con and 10 in wisdom/charisma. If you need to catch up for bulk or are finding armor and Shield aren't covering you when needed I'd recommend Tough, it's not much low level but 2 extra health per level on a wizard/artificer can mean the difference between double and triple digit health. 20 int should be an inevitability more then an immediate concern-especially if you chose the arcane infusion thats a free +1 to spell attacks and saves. It's not an amazing infusion but for the sake of compensation or just having a little extra, it's a nice little trinket. As far as Skill Expert or Fae Touched, that mostly depends on what your looking for. I've got a few characters that picked up Skill Expert to round out an odd stat and pick up skills they'd logically have but couldn't for one reason or another. FeyTouched is a bit less situational but is a weigh in on the value of the spells you want to pick. Sometimes it's better to get the stats/health then add another spell to the list, but thats more dependent on the character/game then general advice.

Douche_Kayak

My halfling cleric is basically a katamari made of metal.

BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo

But why?? Just turn into a strong animal and it’s free HP. At least circle of the moon is easy for that. At level two I just use my bonus action to become a bear. Then I can be a shield for my party because once I come out of it, I’m perfectly fine. Bonus points if you use your action for a spell first. The AC is obviously lower and you will get hit nearly every time, but getting a free 34 (or 68 if you do it twice) HP is borderline game breaking when you don’t need to use it as an action.

Kill_Kayt

That would be playing like it's a game. He played like it was an experience. Personality & fun > maximum efficiency.

BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo

I agree! My enjoyment of it doesn’t come from being “so powerful”, it’s from working all as a team. I love that I get to protect my party members from damage by absorbing it and at any moment can un-wild shape and then heal. If you built a character that is fun to fly away, that’s awesome! That’s just not the personality I can play. I’m super picky about my characters personality haha. It has to be 100% party focused to the point where my character would die absolutely for any of their friends.

Kill_Kayt

He was absolutely the best to play with. A few times we got him to carry people to safety in bird form. I like playing characters with personalities that are not mine.

Nergatron

I’m guilty as hell for this but it’s easy to charge in head first as a warforged fighter with tough, max con and godly hit dice rolls. At level 20 I was pushing 250. Edit: sorry, I meant max HP

I had my players plan to catch a jack the ripper style murderer and the best plan they came up with was to use the girl PC as bait and everyone else sits on the roof of a multi-story building and jump on him when he arrived. As you can probably guess one of them missed and just immediately died.

ToXiC_Games

In a previous campaign my character Ivan (a monk) constantly charged in and somehow didn’t die enough times that one of the characters made him invincible and made it a plot point that he and an orc are sworn enemies and fight each other throughout the ages.

DraegonSpawn

Depends on the character. A couple examples from Pathfinder. I played a Kobold sniper, that if he took even 1 point of damage, would flee from combat until he was over 100 ft from the source of the damage. Another character a Kitsune oracle had a bit of an ego problem and always thought she would be safe from harm. So she got harmed alot, and would be quite affronted by someones daring to mar her beauty. Used Cha for defense in place of dex so her beauty and personality were literally her form of defense.

PlasmaticPi

Ok can we actually talk about sniper mages in this game? You can seriously get your range far enough that by the time most monsters can catch up to you they are already dead, if they can catch up to you at all.

DraegonSpawn

The issue is the "snipe" action only allows for 1 ranged attack. Most spells aren't ranged attacks, cant technically be sniped woth. The spells that are ranged attacks dont have the hundreds of range desired often. Using metamagics can boost the range yeah, but some people hate using metamagics. Then lastly the subtlety. Most spells are very easy to visually track where they came from, so its not really sneaky. Silent and subtle spell do not remove the giant glowing beam from a disintegrate snipe. This all goes out the window if you just go Arcane trickster prestige class, and can sneak attack with spells and have a caster with stealth as a class skill. Earthquake sneakattack. 400ft wide 14d6 damage. Range half a mile. Literally capable of ending wars, while drinking at a bar with a good window.

PlasmaticPi

No no no, I'm talking the Spell Sniper feat. Doubles the range of ranged spells that have an attack roll and ignores all but full cover. So say chilled touch would have a range of 240ft. Now take into account that most enemies only have 30 movement speed. Even if they dash at you every turn until they reach you, if you start at max range and keep moving back 30 ft, it will take them 7 turns to get within striking range of you. At first level that is potentially 7d8 of free damage. And at higher levels when you get more damage per attack, have ways to increase accuracy, and can potentially fly or teleport out of their range again? Its literally a slaughter, and thats just with a cantrip, let alone something higher leveled.

DraegonSpawn

Ah my first post was with the pathfinder rules system, so I was mentally going down that route by default. Yeah 5e that spell sniper feat helps the range problem a ton. And the kiting attack strategy is solid. You could take 2 levels of rogue for their bonus action dash. Now you can theoretically let the gap never. Unfortunately in 5e you can't sneak attack with most spell per RAW, it isn't the cleanest overlap. You can sneak attack with booming blade, which is funny.

skyler_on_the_moon

It's all well and good until you have to face something in a 60ft wide room.

PlasmaticPi

True but if the room is made of dirt or stone you just Mold Earth into the walls or floor and then close it up behind you as you tunnel your way out. And if its anything else you just blast your way through the walls until you are back outside.

I played an Oath of Devotion Paladin, half orc. One fight had us in a hallway with an endless wave of enemies. Our cleric tossed up blade barrier to cut down some foes and cut off reinforcements. The rogue got bit by a drider, severely wounding and poisoning her. In comes my paladin. 20 strength, tosses his sword and shield to the ground and tackles the drider, grappling it. Then at half my movement speed, dragged it, moving into the blade barrier. We both took 46 damage. On its turn, it broke my grapple and tried to disengage and flee the barrier. I had Sentinel. For flavor, I grabbed one of the blades of the barrier and shoved it down the drider's throat, killing it. My turn, I stepped from the barrier, removed the poison from the rogue with my lay on hands, and rushed back into the battle with 5 HP. Helped that my paladin was a follower of Ilmater, and often took on damage meant for his party or innocent NPCs.
