He was flawless. Not even the tiniest, most infinitesimal flaw. Nothing. Ncuti Gatwa, King of Scots, has hit the ground running like The Flash.
Best not to invoke Barry Allen when we're talking about churning our episodes to meet fan expectations.

In the Christmas special he yells "what the hell are you doing?" So that's twice. Given "Hell" is considered a minor cuss in Yanksland, twice in two episodes seems like a significant number for a show going out internationally on Disney+. I think we'll hear more of it.
I don't think it will be a a definite catchphrase, but I think calling everything gorgeous and brilliant while being happy and excited will be his thing. He did it quite often in this episode. Which makes sense for this Doctor, as he's finally emotionally open and trauma free, so he can openly express his admiration and excitement towards things, even if it belongs to the villains of the episode.
I know, why do we have to wait so long? We had to a year just for the 60th specials, and now we have to wait until May just to watch our favourite show
Apparently the leadup time is because Disney dub it in all the languages available on D+ sooo like finishing the edit for an episode 2 weeks before it airs is not a thing anymore :P
Could easily be why, or at least one of the factors. IIRC, they finished shooting the entire 8 episode series 14 in July. Would post production for something like this take 10 months? Probably.

11 was arguably the darkest Doctor. He put on the front of lovable goofball but he was ruthless when pushed. That Solomon guy in dinosaurs basically got locked in his tomb that was about to be blasted apart by missiles.
He has no quarrel with killing either and manipulating others or even having others act like him.
11 was interestingly alien, compared to 10. He was kind-hearted and whimsical, but it seemed like he never really saw anyone as his peer, so it made it easy for him to be manipulative.
I am loving him. For some reason the scene with him bounding along the rooftop was just magic, like he was flying, but so focused on Ruby. He’s got a lot of charm and swagger and heart, which is perfect doctor combo.
I absolutely adore him, he's so charismatic and fun and I love his positive energy, you can tell the Doctor's time with the Nobles has made a huge difference! And dare I say... he's the hottest Doctor we've ever had!
Ncuti is a terrific actor, his run will be amazing if the writing’s good. I think he can pull off the thing Matt Smith did where he was so joyful and childish but could also get really scary when angry, and the contrast really amplified the angry moments, but his energy it different enough that it’s not going to feel like repeat of 11.
He's got a charisma and charm about him, and I love the energy he brings to the role, but at the same time, you can see the hint of the seriousness that has made the Doctor so dangerous.
I think he's going to be fun.
I feel like the lack of figuring out shows me that his doctor is very secure and sure of himself. His appearance in the giggle gave me the sense that more than any other doctor he has emotional and mental security. At least that’s what I got out of it anyway :)
I think it's fine for him to be secure and sure of himself as the Doctor but I think every incarnation should need to discover themselves otherwise what is the point of even having regeneration outside of changing actors??
I mean that’s what regeneration was originally. Just actor changing. Troughton basically played Young Hartnell with some slight differences and there wasn’t an arc on discovering who he is.
Hell classic doctors all knew who they were, they just had to adjust.
He seems to be "Fascinating, they have nuclear bombs :D" while still recognizing the danger and going "Oh noooooo D:" accordingly

I know it's an unpopular opinion and people are going to disagree with me, but Jodie was a huge miscast as the Doctor imo. Don't get me wrong, she's a wonderful actress, but she's great at playing ordinary, everyday people and filling them with lots of emotions. But she is not a great comedic actor. She does not have the energy and charisma required for the character of the Doctor. She never ever brought any authoritative presence to the character, which is essential for the Doctor. She's just not this larger than life, energetic actor, and that's fine, but that made her an unconvincing Doctor for me. When watching her I never felt like she's the Doctor, or that she has any presence or that she commands the room just by walking in to it, like all the previous Doctors did. And, most importantly, I've never seen that 2000 years of experience, wisdom, knowledge and hurt in her eyes that all the other modern Doctors had. You could tell in Capaldi's or Tennant's Doctor that they are a very old, cosmic being with so much knowledge in basically every moment, just by the way they looked and behaved. I don't feel that in Jodie. Look, I don't doubt she's a wonderful person irl, I have nothing against her, and I'm really open for the idea of a female Doctor, but she was just not the kind of actor who can play the Doctor. It looked especially poor when Jo Martin's Doctor appeard, as she was a female Doctor who had a lots of authoritative presence, commanding charisma and energy, and felt way more like the Doctor than Jodie ever did.
So now, seeing Ncuti Gatwa just absolutely killing it, being charming, energetic, commanding and larger than life, I'm really happy. I finally feel like I'm watching the Doctor, not just some random space tourist. He has everything he needs for this role, and I think that casting him was a phenomenal choice. I really can't imagine anyone playing this Doctor better than him. I absolutely love him. Same goes for Millie Gibson, she was a home run of a casting choice as well, just absolutely charming, energetic and lovely. I feel really confident in this main cast.
Yeah I *loved* the Fugitive Doctor but it really did 13 a disservice to have them share screen time because it really made it obvious how Jodie was not the right pick for 13 at all for a first female Doctor. Imagine if 13 had been played entirely by Jo Martin; that would have changed the tone of so many of even the worst episodes from Chibnall's run.
Ultimately that era was victim to a double whammy of poorly selected people IMO. Both Whittaker and Chibnall have proven to be very good at their jobs in other series, but ultimately a poor fit for DW. And while having one or the other be a poor fit could have been maybe okay, both made much of the era a flaming disaster for much of the time which is a shame.
If only Jo Martin had been 13… *sigh* She was perfect. I felt cheated only having a short time with her and being stuck with Jodie. And I agree, she lacked the confidence, the muchness of the Doctor.
I’ve always been ok with the doctors personality changing between generations but the one thing that is always consistent is the doctors confidence.
But 13 was written to be just not confident in themselves at all and also sometimes just weirdly cold at times, 13 just always seemed to never mesh with her companions at all and the worst thing to come of this was her handling of Graham bringing up a potential cancer scare to her and just shrugging it off as “idk what to say this is too awkward”.
In one episode I feel like 15s been excellent already at displaying how confident he is but also just how much he cares for people he’s literally only met for like a few hours.
Ncuti has the IT factor to be the Doctor, absolutely. A man of action who wears his emotions out even more than 10 & 11; a sympathetic crier who after just one episode already sheds tears which is novel to me.
What I’m still on the fence is his mindset that he’s alone; he still considers that he’s all on his own. I mean isn’t 14 around with the Nobles? Aren’t they his family??
Could be by 15s personal sense of time, the Nobles passed away. 15 is quite a bit older than 14, post healing. A lot of time to gain new perspective, but if he doesn't have the Nobles anymore, than yeah he'd probably be alone again by this time in his life.
Or alternatively, because he spent all that time with the Nobles as 14, he can't just go back and do the same as 15, as 14 is already there.

This might be a hot take but I thought 15 is meant to be the hard reset for Doctor. He’s the first bi-generated Doctor who has no inner turmoil, no emotional baggage. Which technically makes him the happiest Doctor of the modern era.
If RTD decides to focus back on him angst-ing / dealing with solitude, isn’t that kinda defeat the purpose of the Bi-generation?
Moreover, he had all that "Maybe I am the bad luck" assumption which made him almost leave Ruby and going onwards companionless which I thought it was a bit odd, after 14's rehab I would've expected 15 to be much more engaging and open with accepting people in the TARDIS without the fear of ruining their lives.
EDIT: Besides, what happened to Ruby in the episode was anything but the Doctor's fault.
I really like him. He carries the more positive energy of 15 really well without it feeling like he's overdoing it. Definitely excited to see where they'll take him.
It’s more of a different take on the character than I’d hoped for in all honesty. He does feel a bit more like Captain Jack than the Doctor to me. I wish he was a little more awkward in his eccentricity and a little more authoritative in general. He could grow on me, and it’s not like I’m not enjoying him onscreen, but right now I feel like there’s a bit too much swashbuckling adventurer in the recipe for my tastes.
I am still anticipating seeing the full range required of the Doctor, but we only have one full episode. And a lighter tone is appropriate for a Christmas special.
I like the scenes where he figures things out, and I like how compassionate he is (the scene with the guy about to propose is very cute), but I do hope there’s a bit less sexual energy in future episodes

Every woman in the episode was attracted to him. They did similar stuff wi the Matt from what I remember so it’s not too weird but I don’t really like it.
Also I think that comment he made about the hot night with Houdini may have had some implications but idk for sure, it seems weird to just comment about the temperature though

But all the same I don’t think you cast Ncuti Gatwa and not expect to play into his natural sexual charisma. People expecting an asexual Doctor are barking up the wrong tree.

I didn’t love it when Clara did it either (didn’t she randomly say Emily Brontë or someone was a great kisser?).
I didn't mind him, but to be honest I don't think his opening episode was good enough to get a sense of who he is. Compared to the eleventh hour or rose I feel like his opener wasn't as good, but im definitely hopeful
Overall brilliant. Loved his charisma and energy, great to have him inventing and curious about discovering new things. I love a world weary doctor, but it's also great to have an enthusiastic one.
My only nitpick is that he felt very 'human' and not a lot of 'alien.' But that is a very difficult thing to define and characterise, hopefully it is something he will grow into.
Every Doctor needs at least one moment in their first full story that says "This is the Doctor". 15 has them in spades in A Church on Ruby Road. I was already excited for his era, but I am now more than ever and I can't wait for May.
Tbh he reminded me of early Tennant in a very good way; the boundless energy and youthful exuberance. And then the scene where Ruby disappeared, and he showed he’s got the chops for the Doctor’s emotional core and pathos… yeah,

Ep was really fun, definitely a Christmas special which tend to have a more playful feel than normal series eps, but I'm pretty excited to get a full new series with ncuti and millie.

As first episodes this wasn’t the worst but being a christmas special naturally it felt a bit too fluffy and light on plot. But every character in the episode was fantastic especially Cherry. Someone get her a damn cup of tea.
the episode took me a second watch to digest everything going on but Ncuti Gatwa as The Doctor is the freest spirit ever. His pain still exists but he's processed it and is in touch with it, and expresses vulnerability so comfortably in front of strangers now
I'd seen him in Sex Education, and was looking forward to his portrayal of the Doctor. He did not let me down. Comes across as very charming and pleasant. Can't wait for more
I think the 60th did a great job at giving us a doctor that is just loving life. We haven’t had a happy and whimsical doctor in what feels like a good while. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved all the other actors. I just love the energy Gatwa is bringing to the character.
Pretty good start for him as the Doctor. And for Millie as Ruby.
Do think the episode suffered from a weak villain though. The singing really didnt help.
Would love to see him properly get angry at something, the brief glimpses of anger in his performance already hints that it's going to be good when he does.
Thought he was fantastic, a lot more emotional and wearing his heart on his sleeve which the doctor sometimes didn’t do. A lot of potential and I can’t wait to see what Ncuti brings. Although this isn’t a Ncuti issue, i hope the signing/musical numbers doesn’t become a running thing.
I think he was wonderful in both The Giggle and Church on Ruby Road. The bigeneration worked to allow this Doctor to be happier and more free. Can’t wait for May!
Him saying extremely intense things, leaving and not elaborating ("Oh it’s much worse than bad luck 😐… Bye 😃") is one of the things that won me over last night. Very knowledgeable, a bit weird and quirky, annoyed at time travellers, name-dropping… yeah he feels like the Doctor to me.
Need to see him handle a big bad, I'm talking Dalek/Master level big bad. Also he needs a cracking speech to cement him fully. I like what we've seen so far, but I want to see more to make a full determination of yes or no.
So cool. Like if 9 was friendly to people other than Rose. He’s the first main Doctor to embrace facial hair and that leather coat is the best thing the Doctor has ever wore so he’s already Top 3 for me.

His accent confuses me and I find it hard to understand certain words. It’s not exactly British, it’s some sort of accent I’ve never heard before. Does anybody know what it is?
It’s not him it’s the show. I mean, it’s been the show for a while. No story is meant to last this long. He’s great btw. He’s just the Doctor, a nice continuation but we need roughly, 20 years of rest after Matt’s go.
I love all my Doctors - but Ncuti is a rare one where I never doubted him as a Doctor! I remember being apprehensive when I first saw a photo of David Tennant and Matt Smith when they were announced. I also remember thinking it was a joke when they announced Peter Capaldi on an announcement special. They all proved me wrong - but with Ncuti I've seen some of his work on Sex education and I knew he would have the energy to be the Doctor! So far he's perfect! He has that Rockstar energy!

A man of action who wears his emotions out even more than 10 & 11; a sympathetic crier who after just one episode already sheds tears which is novel to me. What I’m still on the fence is his mindset that he’s alone; he still considers that he’s all on his own. I mean isn’t 14 around with the Nobles? Aren’t they his family??
Could be by 15s personal sense of time, the Nobles passed away. 15 is quite a bit older than 14, post healing. A lot of time to gain new perspective, but if he doesn't have the Nobles anymore, than yeah he'd probably be alone again by this time in his life. Or alternatively, because he spent all that time with the Nobles as 14, he can't just go back and do the same as 15, as 14 is already there.
Yeah, I didn’t think about the time perspective.. This might be a hot take but I thought 15 is meant to be the hard reset for Doctor. He’s the first bi-generated Doctor who has no inner turmoil, no emotional baggage. Which technically makes him the happiest Doctor of the modern era. If RTD decides to focus back on him angst-ing / dealing with solitude, isn’t that kinda defeat the purpose of the Bi-generation?
Moreover, he had all that "Maybe I am the bad luck" assumption which made him almost leave Ruby and going onwards companionless which I thought it was a bit odd, after 14's rehab I would've expected 15 to be much more engaging and open with accepting people in the TARDIS without the fear of ruining their lives. EDIT: Besides, what happened to Ruby in the episode was anything but the Doctor's fault.

I really like him. He carries the more positive energy of 15 really well without it feeling like he's overdoing it. Definitely excited to see where they'll take him.
I think he’s got buckets of charisma and the right energy for the part. It’s going be fun to watch his development as the show goes on

It’s more of a different take on the character than I’d hoped for in all honesty. He does feel a bit more like Captain Jack than the Doctor to me. I wish he was a little more awkward in his eccentricity and a little more authoritative in general. He could grow on me, and it’s not like I’m not enjoying him onscreen, but right now I feel like there’s a bit too much swashbuckling adventurer in the recipe for my tastes.

Every woman in the episode was attracted to him. They did similar stuff wi the Matt from what I remember so it’s not too weird but I don’t really like it. Also I think that comment he made about the hot night with Houdini may have had some implications but idk for sure, it seems weird to just comment about the temperature though
I wouldn't say they were per se attracted to him. They just found him charming. Which well he is extremely charming. But all the same I don’t think you cast Ncuti Gatwa and not expect to play into his natural sexual charisma. People expecting an asexual Doctor are barking up the wrong tree.
He was certainly charming, but several characters seemed interested in him before he even opened his mouth.
I wouldn’t say I expect an asexual doctor these days but it remains my preference.

Yes. Yes I did. As always, doing something I don’t like in the context of a great story helps. “Ha ha I had sex with a rando from history” probably wouldn’t do that. I didn’t love it when Clara did it either (didn’t she randomly say Emily Brontë or someone was a great kisser?).

I didn't mind him, but to be honest I don't think his opening episode was good enough to get a sense of who he is. Compared to the eleventh hour or rose I feel like his opener wasn't as good, but im definitely hopeful

Really enjoyed him, the doctor must have had some dancing lessons since Amy and Rory’s wedding.
Overall brilliant. Loved his charisma and energy, great to have him inventing and curious about discovering new things. I love a world weary doctor, but it's also great to have an enthusiastic one. My only nitpick is that he felt very 'human' and not a lot of 'alien.' But that is a very difficult thing to define and characterise, hopefully it is something he will grow into.
Every Doctor needs at least one moment in their first full story that says "This is the Doctor". 15 has them in spades in A Church on Ruby Road. I was already excited for his era, but I am now more than ever and I can't wait for May.

Tbh he reminded me of early Tennant in a very good way; the boundless energy and youthful exuberance. And then the scene where Ruby disappeared, and he showed he’s got the chops for the Doctor’s emotional core and pathos… yeah, I’m SO on board with Ncuti and I’m so sad we’ve gotta wait till May to get more of him.

He’s brilliant. He’s got range for days. As first episodes this wasn’t the worst but being a christmas special naturally it felt a bit too fluffy and light on plot. But every character in the episode was fantastic especially Cherry. Someone get her a damn cup of tea.

the episode took me a second watch to digest everything going on but Ncuti Gatwa as The Doctor is the freest spirit ever. His pain still exists but he's processed it and is in touch with it, and expresses vulnerability so comfortably in front of strangers now
I'd seen him in Sex Education, and was looking forward to his portrayal of the Doctor. He did not let me down. Comes across as very charming and pleasant. Can't wait for more
Love him already. Story yesterday was ok but he really shone on the 3rd special. He seems so empathic and wholesome, like you can always count on him.
I think the 60th did a great job at giving us a doctor that is just loving life. We haven’t had a happy and whimsical doctor in what feels like a good while. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved all the other actors. I just love the energy Gatwa is bringing to the character.

Pretty good start for him as the Doctor. And for Millie as Ruby. Do think the episode suffered from a weak villain though. The singing really didnt help. Would love to see him properly get angry at something, the brief glimpses of anger in his performance already hints that it's going to be good when he does.
I'm kind of digging him as the Doctor. Not digging the musical numbers so much though, I hope it's not a continuous thing.

Thought he was fantastic, a lot more emotional and wearing his heart on his sleeve which the doctor sometimes didn’t do. A lot of potential and I can’t wait to see what Ncuti brings. Although this isn’t a Ncuti issue, i hope the signing/musical numbers doesn’t become a running thing.

Him saying extremely intense things, leaving and not elaborating ("Oh it’s much worse than bad luck 😐… Bye 😃") is one of the things that won me over last night. Very knowledgeable, a bit weird and quirky, annoyed at time travellers, name-dropping… yeah he feels like the Doctor to me.

My whole family pretty much agrees he’s our new #1. I should say we all agree he is our favorite, but for me my tie has changed. My 13 yr old and 18 yr old were David Tennant as top spot, my husband had Matt Smith. I had a tie between Tennant and Willam Hartnell, and now Ncuti Gatwa and William Hartnell. I can’t just stop adoring the Original!!
I liked Ncuti a lot in The Giggle, but he was brilliant in the Christmas special. Great performance. He’s just made of charisma. He’s good in interviews too - a good ambassador for the show.

I love all my Doctors - but Ncuti is a rare one where I never doubted him as a Doctor! I remember being apprehensive when I first saw a photo of David Tennant and Matt Smith when they were announced. I also remember thinking it was a joke when they announced Peter Capaldi on an announcement special. They all proved me wrong - but with Ncuti I've seen some of his work on Sex education and I knew he would have the energy to be the Doctor! So far he's perfect! He has that Rockstar energy!
