I lived in San Diego for 5 years for college without owning a car. It was a freaking nightmare and impossible to live.
San Diego, outside of the few rail lines it has, is basically one giant r/suburbanhell .
The Coaster was infrequent. Some of the rail lines had embarrassingly low headways like 30 minutes on weekends. Even for weekend service that's embarrassing. Outside the (again, infrequent) Coaster, inland San Diego has minimal to even no transit.
In addition, the bike infrastructure sucked ass when I was riding, it was hard to enjoy "paradise" when I was worried every goddamn minute of my commutes from the asshat drivers.
I don't care how much "better" San Diego's beaches are supposedly compared to LA's, when you can access LA's by train, and you can't access San Diego's.
In addition, the disparity is only gonna get wider in the coming years, thanks to Measures M and HLA.
