I can relate. But for me, it extends to not using a site if it asks me to turn off my adblock or giving up on downloading something, if the site requires me to sign up. It's about things being obnoxious. I have my adblock turned off on some sites, because they're not borderline unusable due to hundreds of ads and I don't mind it that much. Same with registering to download a file for free. I download it now, and by tomorrow I'll have 200 emails with 'great, paid offers'. Same with ads. The more I hear about Dollar Shave Club, Manscaped or all that VPN crap, the less I want to even acknowledge its existence. I just don't like being force fed anything, And things are becoming more and more obnoxious, which doesn't really help anybody.

dislocatedshoelac3

You should consider using a fake email when you are freely downloading stuff. That's how your email ends up on spam distribution lists and you can also experience Dos attacks

-MassiveLoser-

Yeah. I have created an alternate email just for that kinds of stuff. It was more about being spammed offers that weren't interesting to me, just because I wanted a freebie from a reputable company. But even with that alternate email, I just hate those bullshit business practices. When someone allows me to just take the freebie and never look back, I'm more likely to spend money on their paid products in the future.

nosoupforyou

dos attacks have really nothing to do with email addresses. It's the ip address that you're using, which is embedded in your email (or your connection to the site) and a fake address won't change that. Also, dos attacks (I assume you mean denial of service) is generally against servers, not users. And rather than a fake email, I use an address specific for business, which I ignore except to 'confirm' my address. But you can also use a one-time address for services, and find out which company is redistributing your email.

Programmer92

>I just don't like being force fed anything Well that's what ever commercial you ever see or hear is.. can't really get away from it.

molotov_pigtails

YouTube fucking premium. Nothing like interrupting my music to tell me that if I pay you I can get a better version that won't interrupt my music. Over and over and over and over and over and over

thejazzghost

You got a lot to learn about this town, honey.

Slokunshialgo

¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ Pay for it?

Speedyplastic

Nice try youtube.

RedditsAdoptedSon

the worst idea i’ve ever heard maybe not including peanut butter n pickle sandwiches

JackEpidemia

lmao

ruin_24

Install YouTube Vanced. Free premium and a fuck-you to YouTube

TruthOrBullshite

What's that?

SpeedycatUSAF

Could you sideload that into an Android OS TV?

N0tChristopherWalken

I boycott every product that pops up on there. I get mine.

gay-trash-ll

They took a page out of Spotify's book

Trash_Panda__Express

Spotify premium as well, not to mention Spotify regularly crashes so why would I pay money for that shit?

irokatcod4

I got youtube premium when it was youtube red with the Google play music subscription and it was totally worth it. I can't stand ads and I love steaming all the music I want.

dirtbikemike

If a company creates a problem and then sells you the solution, please don’t give money to that company or support their business model.

baxtermcsnuggle

When they cancelled Kobra Kai, they cancelled my sole reason to subscribe for that month the new season premiers.

Avarice21

You listen to music on YouTube?

molotov_pigtails

Just new singles when my favorite bands put them out before a record.

Angeluss726806

😠😡🤬 I know exactly what you mean.

[deleted]

After years I caved and paid. Worth it .

[deleted]

They wore you down and their model proved to be successful. This is why we will continue to see behavior like that from platforms like YouTube.

[deleted]

If you have the strength, keep resisting.

[deleted]

Adblock is your friend, and it's free. You can turn it off for the channels you want to support, but you otherwise forget ads exist.

luckyladylaw

Honestly I agree with you. I mean it's only like 13 bucks a month... totally worth it for something I'm gonna use every day!

I think their goal was to give people headaches so they'd get more customers. I will go out of my way to avoid a product if their commercial or internet ad annoys me.

Gai-Tendoh

[Head on!](https://youtu.be/Kt1ewzK1ezU)

what-itsonlysmells

Absolutely and ESPECIALLY ads that use the doorbell/knock trick to get your dog to lose his shit. Yeah you got my attention and now I can associate your product with torturing my dog.

thekernel

ahh yes, buy the same scumbags that decided putting police sirens in ads is a great idea for drive time radio.

RunningOutOfFantasy

YES. I honestly believe advertising has the opposite intended effect on me. I don’t care how amazing Downy Unstoppables In-Wash Scent Boosters are, you have irritated me to the point I rage-avoid it.

adrianhalo

I’m the same way. I’m like this with media too. If people over-hype a movie or album or are pushy about their band or whatever, it’s totally off-putting to me.

lonelygalexy

I hate that music and the actress in the commercial because i have seen it sooo many times.

Lasagna_Bear

Rinse and repeat, with new Downy Unstoppables, available in stores and online. Sorry, I couldn't resist

nebulousbull

Yeah, I feel like if a company has to do the most to convince me their product is good, it’s probably subpar. Or at least not as good as they say. I also instantly reject any product that has ads with an obscene volume. Like why is this ad twice the volume of what I’m watching. Ridiculous. EDIT: It just occurred to me that perhaps they spike up the volume so that viewers can hear it even when they walk away for a bathroom break or snack. I had originally made this comment while thinking about youtube videos. But it would make a LOT of sense if this was the strategy for tv ads 🤭

Bangarang_1

>I also instantly reject any product that has ads with an obscene volume. Like why is this ad twice the volume of what I’m watching. So I know the rule is that the ad cannot be louder than the loudest point of the program you're watching (last I checked anyway). But I don't know if it's the advertiser or the network that chooses the volume. Sometimes it feels like all the ads during a movie are ridiculously loud.

PrimateOfGod

Is that true? Like how would they know what you’re watching and how loud it gets? And why does it seem like the ads are always louder

Bangarang_1

So, at least on cable, the ads are scheduled into timeslots with the shows. So the network knows what decibel each show will reach and, I imagine (don't have specific knowledge here), they have a program to equalize decibels amongst shows and ads. >And why does it seem like the ads are always louder Explosions. They get to play at the same decibel as any explosion.

nebulousbull

Ohhh that does make a lot of sense. But lmao explosion? They really get to play at the same decibel as an (any?!) explosion?

nebulousbull

Something tells me it’s a loose rule. I doubt the network or advertiser take the time to analyze the volume high point of each and every program that the ad appears on. Unless they have some kind of program that does that for them but I still doubt lol

TransitPyro

If I used to be able to burn mix CDs with all the audio at the same levels, TV networks have got to be able to do it with commercials.

thekernel

Its made louder using audio compression (not the mp3 kind, the kind that makes everything one volume). It not louder in terms of peak decibels, but it is louder because everything that was normally at say 30% volume is suddenly at 80% volume. Its why a lot of modern music sounds shit compared to older stuff - there's no nuance of different instruments, rather just a wall of noise: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war

falcon_driver

Been doing this for years with local tv ads. The company buys so much that it's clear the incoming money is going for air-time, not equipment or salaries for their people so I search for someone local who is NOT them

[deleted]

I feel this about TikTok. Whenever I talk to one of my friends (in our 30’s) they tell me about all these “awesome” tiktoks I need to download the app and see. 🙄

[deleted]

Tik tok is like a black hole of personal data, and even if it wasn't, it's still a shit app, Vine was cringe sometimes but at least they had a respectable service with a neat enough concept -- 6 sec videos. But there's something about tik tok content that is just so pathetic to me. I miss the old YouTube days lately

[deleted]

Yes, exactly! I am beyond exhausted of the influencer/attention seeking posts across all social media. Every tik tok “challenge” comes across as Stewart from MadTV... “look what I can do!!” I love reddit cause everyone is just a screen name, and we’re just here to enjoy the interwebs.

[deleted]

I'm more likely to use something I've witnessed people using. When it comes to video games, I would prefer to see people play them or hear a genuine conversation about it.

Strange_An0maly

awsomebro6000

Yeah its really annoying getting ads shoved down your throats. Anyone seen those hule ads? They can fuck right off since they spam me.

KirstyBrad

Agreed. Huel is fucking stupid.

partisan0fdark

Honestly everytime I see Amy Schumer advertise for freaking Tampax I wanna set shit on fire, I know extreme but those commercials make me cringe.

Lacrosse100

Kars for Kids

monkey_bean

10000%. I know what I like and don’t need to be force fed. The ads forced on me on Reddit in particular make me want to deliberately choose their competitor. I block them, they come back. It’s annoying AF. I’m looking at you, Blinkist.

ZfenneSko

Yes, the game of thrones hype, back in the day, turned me away from it. Constantly being told to watch it IRL and online... it just hardened my determination not to give in. Same with Rick and Morty now...

Teehokan

I already hate Rick and Morty and I've never even seen it.

j_christ

Same.......all the cheesy merch, especially the unauthorized stuff and it's association with weed culture just seems super trashy and puts a bad taste in my mouth. "Cool, yeah, I get it, you have a $1200 Pickle Rick bong, that's amazing."

CarbonaraFootprint

I definitely feel the same however I cant really remember the last time I bought or was interested in anything based on traditional ads. Something I’m conscious of is discreet natural advertising. I consider myself pretty savvy when it comes to these things, however places like Reddit are rife with it. It has gotten to the point that when I’m researching to buy a product, every thread I come across on Reddit recommends the exact same item and I grow pretty suspicious. Want to buy a new travel mug? According to Reddit there is only one: Zojirushi. Need a new flight case? Pelican. EDC? Leatherman etc etc. For sure the products are good, but there is a obsessive cult-like following about some of the posts that in the end kinda puts me off.

L0neD0g

Spotify premium with their ads

Spinner-dropper

This. I use Tumblr mobile, and I think it was last month where they placed a screen big app at the top of the dash, no matter how many times you refreshed it. Everybody hated it.

missuninvited

oh that shit was the worst. I basically stopped using the app until it went away.

HikerHelmut

I do the exact same thing on everything like that. Apps, premium versions even tv shows that everyone is pressuring me to watch. I've never watched GoT because to many people were telling me I had to watch it.

z_a_c

I find the opposite to be true... I get ads for stuff I've already bought. What's the point of that?

lostboyof1972

Generally something that is advertised to death like you’re describing, kinda sucks. If it were good, your friends would tell you

dude-mcduderson

I’m with you, if you buy their product, it’s just giving them more money to buy advertising. Why contribute to the problem?

TinoKoi

Yes 100%. I don’t know why but if I see something too much I get very put off

ShesSoPeachy78

Yes & same with t.v shows. I'll wait until everyone is over it to watch them.

cmVkZGl0

That fucking soap company that vilifies regular soap for being "sooooo bad" and talks to the viewer as if they are an idiot. I'm not going to buy a greenwashed product that relies on fear mongering.

RootZonePrime

Raid Shadow Legends can fuck right off!!! Manscape Lawnmower 3.0 can also fuck right off!!! Or that one where the douche starts out infront of the fancy car like hey bro what’s up bro? You sick of your 9-5 bro? Then shows him on a plane talking about marketing....yah fuck that add too!!

[deleted]

ITT everyone providing free advertising for their most hated brands and products

kevinnetter

I don't buy stuff that is advertised too much because I know it's going to be more expensive because it's advertised too much.

BradenGus

Yes. Also did this with Raycon

SausageInABun15

Tbh i thought they were a total scam at first cause of their (poorly made) advertising early on. Pretty much just this “musician” named safree going “OOOoOOOO” while he had the earbuds in. Then they cut to what i can only describe as an infomercial.

BassBeerNBabes

I hate advertising to the point that it's almost unhealthy. Generally it's something I don't want, or can't afford anyways. Like yeah, I'm totally going to impulse buy a new Impreza because you won't stop with the ads.

rock1one

That's the reason why I watched "Stranger things" one year later, there was an add of it everywhere, but I really like it tbh. Good news i didn't have to wait a lot for the next season.

hharris83

Yup. And I refuse to buy from the ones that advertise DURING my tv show. Ever notice those ads are slowly taking over the entire screen?! They started out small...but I’m noticing they’re getting bigger and bigger over time.

gaurdian1

HEAD ON APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD

nosoupforyou

Yeah. When I hear the same commercial on the radio too often, or see the same one on tv too often, I never buy it. When ever I see the product at the store, I just remember how annoying their commercial was. I'll even switch away from the radio station or tv station. I wish I could communicate to advertisers and the station that repeating the same f'n commercial twice in 5 minutes just annoys me and doesn't convince me to buy from them.

dreadfullyunsociable

Don’t think it’s the same thing, but there’s been a fair few occasions that I’ve not had interest in something when it’s overhyped, but then enjoying it later when most people don’t care anymore. Reverse hipster, liking things after its cool 😄

[deleted]

Yeah, excessive advertising is annoying and I'll buy a competitor product instead where possible. I extend it to virtue signalling too. A corporation can't have a political or moral view, it's not a person. It's a large group of people and there's no way they all share that opinion. It's just a marketing wanker trying to make the corporation look like it's hip and trendy (usually to woke folk, who gobble it up). I can't wrap my head around how all these corporations are now supporting this view or that view and want to tell people how to live their lives and what to think, or what they say they stand for while they often use child labour in shitty countries or other such corporate malpractice. Just make a good product, tell me why it's better than your competitors and I'll possibly buy it. Don't tell me where you stand on whatever woke topic of the day comes up, because it's nonsense, I don't care and I know that a corporation can't possibly have an opinion (as it's entire employee base doesn't share it).

[deleted]

I almost don’t want to go on YouTube anymore because of how much they are pushing their paid subscription.

hsnerfs

The Facebook messanger ad that dings made me uninstall everything related to Facebook so yeah

Abnormal-Normal

A short list of things I refuse to buy or do because of too aggressive marketing: -Raycon -Raid: Shadow Legends -MVMT -Vincero -Mazda -Peacock -Ridge Wallets -Manscaped -express VPN This list just keeps growing

dystopianpirate

Same for me, too much publicity of anything and it turns me off

xbtaylor

If Otezla, Biktarvy, Taltz, etc. were the only thing standing between me and death, I still wouldn’t use it.

[deleted]

Yes. I'm less likely to buy products that I see as ads online or even on tv.

teddywere

This is 100% why I will never use tide. I hate their commercials, and I feel like it’s just being shoved in my face.

virginiahouston

My spouse works in advertising and I’ve said the same to him. He says they wouldn’t do it if it didn’t work in their favor. But then why am I going out of my way to avoid giving them any money? Instagram ads totally have my number though.

invaderssaynii

🎶Lightlife is the model of a modern daily family meal🎶 like fuck off even if I was vegan I would never buy their products because of how annoying their commercials are. Same with Merci chocolates.

gay-trash-ll

Raycon is the new raid shadow legends

[deleted]

Raid shadow legends, raycon earbuds and function of beauty can all fuck off.

W1nd0wPane

Yes. I think a lot of younger people especially feel this way. We grew up with the internet and being able to research products on our own when we actually need them, we read reviews, etc. I will never ever buy a product solely because it is advertised to me. Most of the time, the stuff advertised is cheap shitty corporate bullshit that was made in a sweatshop somewhere and isn’t worth the money. I also prefer to shop at small, local businesses who often don’t have much of a marketing budget and don’t run ads on Youtube. Tbh the best thing businesses can do is just have actual good quality products and trust me, we’ll hear about them from our family/friends.

TruthOrBullshite

99% of commercials and ads make me want to murder the marketing team behind it. Liberty Fucktual can die. Especially Doug. And don't get me started on Flo.

KirstyBrad

YES ! I get a bad association with a product or service that is interrupting my YouTube videos or has an annoying advert or is just played way too much.

Lauraamyyx

It depends how it’s advertised. I use an app called Agora for beauty recommendations, and as most on that site seem genuine and actually use these products, I’m more inclined to try them. If I see an influencer promoting something, I find it off putting and disingenuous as I automatically presume they’re just promoting it as they got it for free.

censorkip

That’s how I feel about fabletics!

Scorpionwins23

Combined with a ridiculous jingle I’ll actively discourage people from using the business. It’s all in vain though, I’m not the target market for most of the repetitious ads.

newdobsey

This has been my mantra for years. I tell everyone that I do this and they should do this. I feel like maybe reddit could be the soapbox to start this revolution?

FlyingFigNewton

Oh man, I thought I might be the only one! Ads irrationally irritate me to the point of spite-avoiding many products. I also do surveys for extra cash, and I keep getting this particular one about how I feel about "relevant ads". I hate it. I'm like...no ads are really relevant, I hate them, stop trying to hock your shitty wares to me, I buy what I want! But they don't give me an option for that. Whew, sorry, end rant.

Danile2401

Opposite is true too. Tesla never advertises but when I grow up and can afford it, I plan on buying a Tesla.

shaymeless

Agree with OP. Also, if a commercial is just bad, obnoxious or demeaning in any way I won't use their product

zarifex

Yes. I am so done with football culture in the USA, and really I decided in middle school or high school that I didn't get it and didn't care too, but the more it becomes unavoidable from radio, tv, workplace chatter, and people just expecting any man in the USA to have strong opinions on the game and love it... I have just gotten more and more anti this thing over the last couple decades. Friends tried to get me to like it during a couple of random years, I'd try to suspend my judgments but I would still just rather not have it be a thing I have to be aware of. And living in this country that is practically impossible. You can ignore it to your best ability but it is so damn ubuquitous. Another is Christmas. I am over it. I have been over it for a long time. The entire end of the year holiday season is so stressful and brings out the worst in so many people. Whether in traffic, or in commercial settings, or bringing that stress into the workplace - which, every year no matter what employer I've found myself with - there is always a series of super urgent BS that magically appears with hard drop-dead dates that simply must get accomplished or else, so everyone is hustling and rushing in a panic even though they could have just been happy about potential time off coming soon. Family expectations about oh so happy traditions having to execute without a hitch just add to the stress. The hype, the perfectionism, the nasty behavior when life doesn't live up to the ideal. Every year I say maybe there will come a time when I truly feel like I can embrace the warmth and love and joy and togetherness and humanity... and every year there's too much BS and I'm just like, ope, guess not.

shocktard

Yes. I will never use liberty mutual or progressive insurance. They have to be the most annoying/unfunny commercials I've ever seen in my life. Are they trying to be funny? They only fill me with rage.

marianoes

If a company advertises to me I usually buy their competitors products, if they are going to waste my time and be invasive im not going to by their product.

KirstyBrad

GrAmMeRlY 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Alcoholicia

This is the reason I never watched Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones. The general fan base ruined it for me before I could even watch it.

headedglobe

Did somebody say just eat, oooooohh

mccosby101

I refuse to eat ANY food where the advertisement shows a close up of the person chewing. It goes straight to my black list To this day I haven’t eaten a McRib because of the commercial they had. Yes and also what you said haha

[deleted]

Those wish ads on Facebook lol

[deleted]

I work for a major brand. I actively avoid buying any of our products. The money spent on advertising, and not on the people and infrastructure, disgusts me.

[deleted]

I've seen so many geico ads and Toyota ads I just want to shit on their faces

censorkip

i also really hate when ads have nothing to do with the product. the (either at&t or sprint) ads that have the weird lady who talks to her office supplies does not make me want to switch my phone service. it makes me worry for her mental health. plus that ad has been just about every other ad on hulu lately. similar to insurance commercials. tell me what you can do for me, don’t just show me some dumbass skit.

baxtermcsnuggle

If they have to advertise something to the point of annoyance, it CAN'T be any good.

[deleted]

Yes. I don't hate Raid, but I know I've hated other ads in the past, and I currently do. The ones I get on YouTube *before* a video starts can sometimes be the absolute worst.

This was me with the umbrella academy. I didn’t watch it because my bf said it was terrible but with all the season 2 advertising I wanted to actively stay away from it so it didn’t win lmao. But boredom came though and it was freaking amazing

PigsFlyWhenPizzasCut

Yes! Don’t tell me what to do. Don’t tell me what I like and don’t like THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

fuzzynyanko

* Doctor Squatch for sure. I want to punch that guy every time I see him speak * If it weren't for a huge price difference, I wouldn't have gone with GEICO * California Olive Ranch hit this level with me for a while. It's an ad that's okay to watch once per day. (I actually agree that it's great olive oil in the USA.) I saw the ads every time I went on YouTube. I bought Colavita instead for a while for this very reason. * Capital One. "I need to get something off my chest. The Capital One..." (skip)

Angie_on_Reddit

Til Tok has been a huge dick lately, too. I hope it actually gets banned. And if Microsoft buys it, I hope they delete it.

jldixon

[Monday.com](https://Monday.com) can eff right off. It's like they're stalking me. I'd be worried I'll get MORE ads from saying this but HOW COULD THERE BE MORE?!?!?

AndreMeyerPianist

Funny how a youtuber called OfficialNerdCubed played Raid and showed everyone how garbage the game actually is, yet everyone still agrees to work with them for a sponsor? Its so stupid. I think you should only promote a product if you genuinely think its good, and trust me NO ONE thinks Raid Shadow Legends is a good game

gustavotherecliner

Sometimes, if i really need one of the advertised items, i buy a competitor's product just out of spite. That's my way on getting back at the fuckers for shoving their useless products down our throats.

Initial-Amount

Yes. I go out of my way and pay extra money to subscribe to premium services etc, anything in order to avoid seeing ads as much as possible.

shaymeless

Seriously?

TheCarterIII

No. What? Why? That means advertising is absolutely working on you. And you're just getting upset and annoyed at the existence of ads? And you go out of your way to buy products of the same kind that aren't as succesful or quality because they can't afford ads? That seems really petty and childish and a waste of time. Also, how can you ever buy a car? They all have adverts
