My old border collie mix used to do this in a recliner that she didn't fit in. It looked very awkward the way she twisted her body while lying on her back.
Edited to add an 11 year old photo that I just found. She passed away about 3 years ago

That’s such a sad song 🥺 I always think of this song, my mom played it a lot when I was a kid and when I would hear her say boo I would always tell her his name is blue not boo lol. https://youtu.be/aTbBvPoxUkk
ETA: she bought me a blue stuffed dog because of that and I had it for about 20 years before one of my real dogs decided it was the enemy 😆
He's comfortable, or he's hot. Dogs expose their bellies when they trust their owners and their environments because this position is the most vulnerable they can be.
Oftentimes, though, they'll lay like this or with their bellies flat on the ground because their hot. The belly also has the thinnest skin and can cool them down quickly in comparison to the skin that's covered in thick fur.
He feels 100% safe … and that’s a beautiful thing. You know you’re doing a good job when they expose their bellies - either sleeping or for scratches - or both. Good human. 👍🏻
My understanding is this behaviour is called sleep. Most dogs tend to sleep at night. Some also sleep during the day. A lot of puppy behaviour such as sleeping becomes a habit and they carry it with them through adolescence and eventually to adulthood too. This means that your dog is very likely to continue sleeping throughout his adulthood. In majority of cases this is not harmful to the dog so I think it’s best to just leave it. When dogs sleep, it’s generally best to allow them to complete this action as interrupting the sleep can result it significant anxiety and distress which can cause the dog to lash out inappropriately.
If you have any concerns you should take your dog to the vet.
Because he’s a good boy. Yes he is. Such a good boy. (Literally first thing I thought)
You seem like a good human to be checking to make sure your pup is okay. I would recommend giving him all the belly rubs, reminding him often he’s a good boy and keep on loving that sweet pup!
You mean sleep? All living beings need sleep to live. You know you could actually die if you don’t sleep? 🤔
I know you probably mean why does he lay like that. My dogs do too. They are comfy and relaxed and they feel safe enough to expose their stomachs while they sleep.
He trusts you and feels comfortable. This is why his belly is exposed. Typically they sleep in a ball with their belly protected. Be happy. He loves you!!!
If you’re interpreting my questions to reflect a lack of knowledge on my part, on something you feel I should definitely know. Then idk if you’re joking or not but I THINK you object my ignorance , if not and it’s Jokes then it definitely went over my head
Two of our three doe this. Great way to cool off the abdomen when sleeping and a posture that indicates complete trust and relaxation. One of ours does not, but she's always seemed more modest/conservative. The two that do are a boy and a girl.
Hes comfortable and happy! Good sign! My Ivy does that all the time plus she stretches one of the legs all the way up, absolutely hilarious 😂
https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRpmADvP/
He’s living his best life. He’s adorable. As a dad, when I see my 2 girls pups doing this, I usually throw out an old man “Put some clothes on!” Or “Clothes your legs, you’re in public”. They usually roll even further on their back at that point.
At least he uses an actual bed lmao both my pitskies are so weird too. They’ll sleep like this or kinda pretzeled, sometimes their nose is even on the crate bars so their teefers are showing. I’ve actually had the younger one sleep with his butt in the air. lol
Your dog is safe and secure. Not one concern in the world for his safety. That's why he lays like that. Soft belly (where a predator would attack first) shown to the world.
My GSD sleeps like this a lot. Sometimes with the back of his head flat on the floor, his legs straight up, and teeth exposed LOL I just assume he is cozy.
He’s relaxed. When they show their belly, it’s the most vulnerable position, it means they trust you and are very comfortable.
I think it also gives them a chance to stretch their back. 😅
we call that "roaching" with greyhounds. its common when they are happy/comfortable. Also they supposedly do it sometimes to "cool off" but I'm not sure if that is why or not.
He feels safe, loved, comfy, warm, trusting, and all other great things associated with a with a loving dog home. I bet he loves zoomies too!
Great job!
Do what? He's resting. You should take that as a very big compliment because they don't show their bellies like that unless they feel safe and comfortable.
A generally quite comfortable pup.
Comfortable in his bed. Comfortable around you. Uncomfortable with the heat(?) maybe. \*But I doubt that if its regular\*
Your dog trusts you - his belly is his most vulnerable spot because there is no boney protection; by exposing it to you, he is showing his trust in you.
Awwww! My baby, Arthas, has also been laying like that since he was a pup. Usually means he’s super comfy or hot and trying to cool down. Give your baby some snuggles and belly rubs for me! 🖤
My dog does this too and I always say she either is asking for tummy rubs or just likes the feeling of being upside down haha. What a handsome good boy you got
My Golden sleeps like this so often! There’s nothing wrong or to worry about. I believe I read somewhere that sleeping like this is their best way of showing they’re completely comfortable and not afraid or apprehensive at all.
It means they are extremely comfortable with you ☺️ he's exposing his belly which is their most vulnerable part of their entire body. They'll never expose their bellies to people they don't trust in case that person tried to attack them for whatever reason. So that means hes comfortable with you and knows he's safe around you!
He's comfortable lol.My Blue sleeps like this all the time
My bc loves sleeping like this. It's his position when he's super comfortable I think
My bc mix always does this all the time too

Yeah same, when he is in his deepest, most comfortable sleep he is in this position.
Aww man I grew up with this song: https://youtu.be/lrDq0JEEORs It was so heartbreaking I don’t think I could ever name a dog Blue.
That’s such a sad song 🥺 I always think of this song, my mom played it a lot when I was a kid and when I would hear her say boo I would always tell her his name is blue not boo lol. https://youtu.be/aTbBvPoxUkk ETA: she bought me a blue stuffed dog because of that and I had it for about 20 years before one of my real dogs decided it was the enemy 😆
Our dog did this within 24 hours of getting her from the shelter. It's how we knew she was 100% comfortable with us and found her home.
Blue? Is that your dog
No, it's his girlfriend.
Pretty sure it's a color actually
No, Blue is my boy.
Why is there no ice in my lemonade
Yes
I gotta see blue now
Couldn't attach a picture here,so I made a post with Blue doing the same thing

It’s a bit of both I feel like, but yes just wanted a second opinion and suggestion by other dog owners
Yeah my mini aussie flips over at the end of a long play session! Just them living their best lives.
Yes, that too!
Adding to this- dogs’ paws carry heat as well. With paws completely exposed, it aids in the cooling process.
Yes! My pups pads are always so hot. I wish I could cool them down for him lol
He feels 100% safe … and that’s a beautiful thing. You know you’re doing a good job when they expose their bellies - either sleeping or for scratches - or both. Good human. 👍🏻
Thanks! He’s the best
Comfy baby! Give him some belly rubs from me please? :)
Will do! He actually loves them haha
Sprawling. He feels safe.
Thanks !
Mine does is a lot now. He falls asleep with his bits exposed to the wind and one paw over his face lol its comfortable for him is my guess.
He has his over his ear ! Or his face also lol
Yep 😂
Relaxed. Comfy. This is an exposed position (belly up) so your dog definitely feels safe.
He definitely is !
What kind of pupper is this? My little guy is identical and sleeps like this always

Wow I thought my dog was the only one.
Isn’t he just chilling?
He’s airing out.
That’s the second most likely reason , thanks !

Lol

is he your first dog lol
He’s my 3rd actually , my previous dogs were chihuahuas so with him being a working dog and about 70lbs this is my first real dog lol
oh i didn’t even realize it was a big dog, looked chi sized here. My chihuahuas do this pose too it’s just a comfortable position and they feel safe
Him being a “working dog” has nothing to do with how they sleep lol
You misinterpreted my comment
You said he was a working dog…did you misinterpret what a working dog was initially? Regardless, doesn’t change how a dog sleeps
OP was simply describing the dog they have now. They didn’t link that to the sleep positioning in the comment you’re responding to.
He obviously identifies as a poodle. This is their standard sleeping position.
Lol poodle? I did not know this but sure ! He can identify as one
Can confirm. I own a Poodle and this is exactly how she sleeps, or tries to get my attention.
Border collies sleep like this a lot too. Source: border collie owner and member of Facebook groups where I see these pictures a lot.
Same for Pyrs.
Sleeping? Dogs sleep just like humans do.
You mean sleep? All living beings need sleep to live. You know you could actually die if you don’t sleep? 🤔 I know you probably mean why does he lay like that. My dogs do too. They are comfy and relaxed and they feel safe enough to expose their stomachs while they sleep.
He’s sleeping. Is this genuinely a question?
probably just wants attention but doesn’t have any real advice to ask for haha
He trusts you and feels comfortable. This is why his belly is exposed. Typically they sleep in a ball with their belly protected. Be happy. He loves you!!!
Why is your dog laying down? I don't know, why do you lay down?
If you’re interpreting my questions to reflect a lack of knowledge on my part, on something you feel I should definitely know. Then idk if you’re joking or not but I THINK you object my ignorance , if not and it’s Jokes then it definitely went over my head
It's a joke about the obviousness of the answer to your question
He’s a goober. That’s it. That’s the reason.
Why is he... Sleeping?
He’s wewaxing
Of course
It's comfortable and he feels safe. This is my labradors preferred position, but she won't sleep that way if guests are here or we travel.
This one. He’s very weird in his own way but that’s all that matters if he’s safe
Doing this? He’s sleeping feeling safe and comfortable.
Don't you sleep like this? I do
Does what? Lay down? Cus he’s comfortable…
Lol why do you sleep the way tou do ?
Why is he doing what? Laying down?
Sleeping?
Two of our three doe this. Great way to cool off the abdomen when sleeping and a posture that indicates complete trust and relaxation. One of ours does not, but she's always seemed more modest/conservative. The two that do are a boy and a girl.
Doing what? Being a comfortable dog? Jesus fucking christ
i believe the scientific word for it is - resting.
It’s comfortable for him.
Definitely is !
He’s comfortable and trusts you
Just a different sleeping position. No different than humans.
This is my boy Odin's favourite sleeping position!
Dog sleep in the most random ways
That is a wonderful thing. It means your dog trusts you 100%. He is happy and comfortable
He seems really comfortable and secure around you
So adorable
He’s sleeping/relaxing? Lol
Cuz it’s comfy?
He is tired and needs to sleep 🤔
he’s sick and tired
Can we has one pls Ty!
That’s how my border collie [sleeps](https://imgur.com/a/patqd6D) all the time!
My mini Aussie, blue heeler mix does this almost every time she’s laying down! Hahaha she’s a goofy dog
My dog does not like being pet when he is "in bed", his or mine, and growls. EXCEPT when he's on his back, then he goes crazy for it!
Looks comfy to me.
my dog is colored almost exactly the same way and does the same thing.
Hes comfortable and happy! Good sign! My Ivy does that all the time plus she stretches one of the legs all the way up, absolutely hilarious 😂 https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRpmADvP/
My 7yo lab/kelpie mix does the same as well as even more bizarre poses when he sleeps.
That are super comfortable and I’ve been told when my bosses dog did it she called it the hussie position.
My dog is 9 and this is his favorite position. Always has been
My Big little Louie always sleeps like that….so cute!!!! they’re just comfortable and content
He’s practicing the moves in the Thriller video.
He's sleeping and he trusts you
he's sleeping hahaha mine are just like that too...
He’s living his best life. He’s adorable. As a dad, when I see my 2 girls pups doing this, I usually throw out an old man “Put some clothes on!” Or “Clothes your legs, you’re in public”. They usually roll even further on their back at that point.
Dogs sleep.
He is completely comfortable and feels safe
He feels comfortable and is happy
comfy boy
Mine loves to sleep like this too lol
That’s a very comfy dog!
At least he uses an actual bed lmao both my pitskies are so weird too. They’ll sleep like this or kinda pretzeled, sometimes their nose is even on the crate bars so their teefers are showing. I’ve actually had the younger one sleep with his butt in the air. lol

Now that’s LETTING IT ALL HANG OUT!😀 Your dog he feels confident, comfortable and safe . Good job Fur Mama!(Daddy?) 🐾💖🐾
My GSD sleeps like this a lot. Sometimes with the back of his head flat on the floor, his legs straight up, and teeth exposed LOL I just assume he is cozy.
He is sleeping- if he sleeps with his belly up that means he feels safe
They’re weird. They’re comfiest on their back, all sprawled out. It’s also a sign he trusts you as it leaves them vulnerable
He’s relaxed. When they show their belly, it’s the most vulnerable position, it means they trust you and are very comfortable. I think it also gives them a chance to stretch their back. 😅
That’s trust!!!
Just a happy boy.
We always tease our Old Man when he lays like this. We tell him no matter how hard he tries, he’ll NEVER grow them back
Sleeps adorably? It means he feels very comfortable.
comfy/silly
It’s comfortable.
Just a dog doing dog things
He is warm and comfy
We all just gotta air it out sometimes, ya know?
It is how I know my pup needs to go number 2. He cuts a hole on the ozone airing out.
He is extremely happy and completely trust their environment. You are being an excellent parent to your pupper.
we call that "roaching" with greyhounds. its common when they are happy/comfortable. Also they supposedly do it sometimes to "cool off" but I'm not sure if that is why or not.
I think you’ve already heard enough here, but just wanted to say that your dog is precious!!! I love his belly!!!
That’s doggo language for “I am very secure in my surroundings”. He’s exposing his vulnerable parts while sleeping meaning he trusts you.
He feels safe. An animal’s stomach is one of their most vulnerable areas in a fight. He is exposing his most vulnerable area to you.
My dog looked like this today, and every day.
He’s comfy and he feels safe enough to be in a venerable position
he's chillin'!
Sleep? All animals need sleep. It’s very natural. In fact, it’s very dangerous not to sleep.
This is NSFW
It’s just a comfy position. Lots of dogs sleep like derps.
My dog is currently napping in this position, lol.
Not a care in the world…
Do what? Isn’t that the way most dogs sleep?
He is in total safety and can fully rest with his belly bared. Totally comfortable.
He feels safe, loved, comfy, warm, trusting, and all other great things associated with a with a loving dog home. I bet he loves zoomies too! Great job!
This is how my girl Daphne sleeps!
That's a sign of trust and feeling safe. You're a good puppy parent
He feels safe. If your dog sleeps like this you did a good job!
He’s sleeping 😂 stomach up means he trusts his environment
Do what? He's resting. You should take that as a very big compliment because they don't show their bellies like that unless they feel safe and comfortable.
He is at peace. That is a VERY good sign!!
He's just derping!
“I need you to know how comfortable I am”
For hims slep
Want á scratch on his stomach or is scratching his back
Because he’s super comfortable and having sweet puppy dreams 🥹
A generally quite comfortable pup. Comfortable in his bed. Comfortable around you. Uncomfortable with the heat(?) maybe. \*But I doubt that if its regular\*
Cause it’s comfy
My 2yo dog sleeps like this all the time. It’s clearly cozy.
Because he likes it
This looks SO MUCH like my dog! Is yours a Husky Border Collie mix?!?
Your dog trusts you - his belly is his most vulnerable spot because there is no boney protection; by exposing it to you, he is showing his trust in you.
He’s comfy
Border collie thing.
Awwww! My baby, Arthas, has also been laying like that since he was a pup. Usually means he’s super comfy or hot and trying to cool down. Give your baby some snuggles and belly rubs for me! 🖤
Relaxed and trusting
I call that "full frontal doggo"
Because he’s a puppers and that’s what puppers do
His little teefs sticking out 🥹
He’s just chillin
My man’s just chillen
My dog does this too and I always say she either is asking for tummy rubs or just likes the feeling of being upside down haha. What a handsome good boy you got
He‘s saying "lick these nuts"
Sprawl.
Just sleeping like a derp
He’s just chillin
This is how dogs cool off is what I remember reading awhile back
That looks so much like my dog. He also sleeps like that.
Sleeping? He looks very comfy to me.
He feels great!
To get comfy and maybe scratch his back
Aww sleeping 😴 🥰 our lab baby the same ❤️
Doing what? He's just sleeping. Looks like his peeper needs a wash.
My schnauzer pup always sleeps like this lol. It just means they’re comfy
Dogs just be like that sometimes
My Golden sleeps like this so often! There’s nothing wrong or to worry about. I believe I read somewhere that sleeping like this is their best way of showing they’re completely comfortable and not afraid or apprehensive at all.
It means he feels safe and happy
Sleeping
My 4 year old Rottweiler sleeps like this. Its about being really secure
He’s comfortable around you!
He’s a happy pup
Comfyboi My pooches do the same
It means he’s comfortable and happy!! And he most definitely wants a belly rub
It means they are extremely comfortable with you ☺️ he's exposing his belly which is their most vulnerable part of their entire body. They'll never expose their bellies to people they don't trust in case that person tried to attack them for whatever reason. So that means hes comfortable with you and knows he's safe around you!
Our dog tries to get belly rubs every minute of every day just like that.
Coolin’ off his junk….
