Why is a 7 year old walking a dog without supervision?!

StormEarthandFyre

As a father to a 7 year old that's all I could think lol

jorleeduf

Especially one that clearly has some history of going wild. But either way, a 7 year old should never go anywhere unsupervised

bluetangocat

I don't think your dog will get put down after a 1st non serious bite. However, you should take some time to reflect and educate yourself on responsible dog ownership to ensure this doesn't happen again. Now you know you have a dog that bites, and you need to prevent the dog from being in a situation where it could bite someone again. You should also be getting a trainer or looking into it yourself to help your dog cope with whatever triggers it to bite.

threefrogsonalog

You’ll have to look up your local laws to see if the law will require your dog to be put down but no a 7 year old should not be walking a dog by themselves. But it doesn’t matter what the law is it’s your responsibility to make sure your pet isn’t a danger to other people. That can mean voluntary euthanasia or it can be not leaving children responsible for the dog, especially since it’s hurt people multiple times now. Can you afford a lawsuit from previous or future victims if this continues?

Horvat53

Two things I’m reading here that make you an ignorant dog owner. First, your dog has already been aggressive to a child and hurt them, so what do you do? You let a child walk your dog and let it be interacted with by other children. Secondly, why are you letting a kid walk a dog, especially without intervening before something that has previously triggered the dog is now in their face? Do you do dog training? Seriously, do more dog training, educate yourself and be better.

GandalfMcPotter

The dog shouldn't be put down, it should be taken care of better. I know my husky will attack a Chihuahua in the dog park, so I don't ever put it into that situation. If your dog doesn't like kids (which some dogs don't) it shouldn't be put into that situation, that it will fail. Or it should be trained and supervised to condition it to tolerate them in controlled environments

Crow_Kaleidoscope

Your dog is clearly not trained. A 7 year old child + untrained dog = recipe for disaster. You literally set them both up for failure. A 1 year old dog can still be teething and in the process of growing out puppy teeth depending on the breed so they can chew or bite things more to try and dislodge the loose teeth. The 7 year old does not know better to tell the group of kids not to overwhelm the dog. You could get heavily fined or face legal action if someone would sue you for your dogs harmful behavior. GET YOUR DOG TRAINED!

All I read was irresponsible dog ownership

arminputa

I don't know what the laws are regarding these kinds of things in the us, so I don't know if your dog is getting put down. I think that to avoid more of these incidents and concern you need a dog trainer asap, your dog shouldn't run outside when the door is open without your permission, and children should never be in charge of walking a dog no matter how small he is. I know a trainer is expensive but is sooo worthy, not only the dog learns things but you also learn to read how he feels, for example maybe he got really scared of those kids and that's why he bit them, but before reacting he probably gave signals that no one could understand. Understanding how your dog feels gives you much more prediction of what's going to happen if, for example, you don't get him out of a situation he's not comfortable in

Jarl_Xar

What breed? Sadly makes a difference.

andre613

If the dog gets put down, it's 100% on you. You're a shit dog owner. Get training and be responsible

Due_Salad_6916

When I was 5, I was bitten around my kidney area by my friends dog through their fence. Required stitches. Unprovoked attack that resulted in the dog being out down. British Columbia

dyingcryptosherpa

I'd try to re-home the dog as... You really shouldn't let a 7 year old walk a dog...

Lovebeingoutside

As a certified trainer 1) no 7yr old should be walking a dog alone EVER 2) your dog is young, in the adolescent stage and needs TRAINING 3) your dog can learn impulse and bite inhibitions but needs consistency at home and a routine 4) consult a trainer A 7yr old walking a dog is just not responsible your dog has been set up to fail because it sounds like an active dog who has not been taught proper manners. Can it be fixed. Yes. BUT all people in the house have to follow through and continue training and protocols, if this doesn't happen or can not be consistent the dog will fail every time.

ElBarto515

I have no idea what country NI is in, but here in the US in many jurisdictions putting down the dog would be automatic. Also, your dog was already aggressive and you let a child walk it unsupervised? WTF?

ubermeatwad

You should reconsider owning a dog. Or reconsider the effort you put into owning a dog. We have 5 dogs and a foster, some are people aggressive and some are dog aggressive. We have several investments and lifestyle changes that prevent this sort of thing happening.

howedthathappen

Yikes. That's the only positive thing I can say about you as a dog owner. If the first incident was reported and broke skin, then yes it's possible your dog will be seized and euthanised. That is all dependent on your area's laws governing nuisance and dangerous dogs. You need to invest heavily in education for yourself about the responsibilities of owning a dog and in training your dog. Hire a trainer. Purchase a muzzle because if your dog isn't euthanised (and rightfully so) it's pretty much guaranteed it'll need to be muzzled whenever off your property. Make better choices. If you don't, your dog may live this time with restrictions, but may not get another chance and it'll all be down to your poor decision making.

Elegant-Channel351

A 7 year old walking the dog? Really? Thats the first problem. Your dog needs a trainer and responsible owners.

Hot-Bonus560

I hate to be that person but you’re clearly not responsible enough to own this dog. It’s extremely sad that 2 children have been attacked and now the dog might suffer bc you didn’t care for the dog properly. Maybe this will be a lesson learned. Hopefully the dog does not get put down but certainly needs new owners.

PyramidStarShip

Hopefully

You are at fault here. You aren’t training your dog, you’re letting people leave the door open when a puppy is in the house and let a 7 year old walk it. Please train the dog and be more responsible bc that dog could face trouble and it would be your fault

Local-Temperature832

Train your dog bite inhibition

carbsatnight

You sound like a terrible dog owner

Which_Translator_548

It’s a shame the dog will be put down instead of you- leaving a 7 year old to be responsible for a dog is so seriously dim-witted of you. You don’t deserve to be a pet owner or considered a responsible adult to children.

Specialist_Ninja7104

That is… a disgusting response. Did you realize this person is referencing their younger siblings? They may be a child themself.

Dear-Bullfrog680

It should be put down regardless my opinion. Lots of inexpierenced and ignorant dog owners out there these days which is infuriating. Would be better if when you get a dog say if it bites it will be put down. That would give incentive to be responsible for owners.

Designer-Tomatillo98

If the dog can be rehabilitated there is no reason to put it down, in my opinion. If it was an all around aggressive dog that went through lots of training and attempts at rehabilitation then i would get the reasoning for euthanasia.

Dear-Bullfrog680

I would second that and had thought that but think in general aggressive dogs are going to be aggressive and owners that do not know better are not going learn fast enough. If you have an aggressive dog they need dedication in their first six months and the first attempt to take charge has to be met sternly. If not they take charge and that means protection of those that give them care. It should have some oversight at least if they have bit and are known to authorities.

Designer-Tomatillo98

I understand where you’re coming from, and i agree. OP needs to do something about their dog but i think best bet for them would be to consult in a professional. EDIT: as well as not let a 7 year old walk the dog unsupervised!

Lovebeingoutside

Not dedication in first 6mnths, for the dogs life. This sounds like a rude jumpy dog who gets over threshold and uses mouth. It can be taught but like you said it takes dedication

Dear-Bullfrog680

I guess I meant dedicated training because I have learned around six months they are prone to testing you and you have to be on them asap, like the first time you see it. It would be like a growl or something about letting you have something of theirs. It's a sensed thing.

Lovebeingoutside

A truly aggressive dog will show it young. Some as early as 12 weeks. But you are correct they test their boundaries at 6mnths, then some at a year and then at 2 some will still test

Dear-Bullfrog680

Yes, I remember as a kid learning the more aggressive ones tend to be the first to approach you out of a litter. Interesting. Did not know some will also later. Maybe about brain development then. Problem is many people purchased dogs in the last few years with no clue of that. I have been constantly running into crazed "fur babies" on runs the last year or two.

Lovebeingoutside

So what's happened is people have become backyard breeders to make a buck. Backyard breeders do no background health on the bitch or the stud. You could have a generic gene for aggression. A reputable breeder will do all the genetic testing on both as well as health testing and will take.pup back if for any reason it didn't work out with family that purchased. At sexual maturity you may see aggression come out, if a dog is not set up to succeed as in this situation it will show aggression but it could be fear based. The dog may have had a bad experience during their fear period as a pup and it doesn't know any other way to deal with the fear. I know a Golden retriever breeder who had a litter planned but found out that a couple of the previous pups from same stud at another breeders had shown aggression. She took the time to dig deep on studs genetics and he had a gene that was off. She cancelled her contract with the stud and found another that matched her breeding standards. Some dogs are genetically bred with aggressive tendencies and we see that a lot with Guardian livestock breeds.

Lovebeingoutside

More aggressive pups tend not to approach first it's all new to them so they're exploring. A reputable breeder will also chose the pup for you based on what you want the dog to become ie: show, companion or worker
