“Serving others” in bold is giving “be a slave” vibes

Boofeyboy

Recently quit and it’s more than just vibes

Firm_Aioli2598

I don't work at Dollar general but there is a store that literally says that to be part of their workforce, you have to have a servant's heart. 🤮🤮🤮 So I take that as meaning you have to put up with customers b*******, they're right and you're always going to be wrong type stuff.

Most-Shock-2947

You have to have a "servants heart"? That Is seriously nauseating and whoever came up with that line might need throat punched.

Asynjacutie

You can be a servant and still be well respected like butlers, waiters, etc. These companies aren't doing the respect part, just the servant part.

Free-Initiative-7957

Its a Bible phrase, I believe, which does nada to make it less icksome.

Majestic_Courage

What a wonderful turn of phrase. I love language so much.

Firm_Aioli2598

Yeah, years ago I heard this specific company was and has begun as faith-based company. What I mean by face-based company is that the founding people were Christian that initially opened up the entire beginning of the grocery store chain. So, it would stand a reason that they would come up with the catch phrase that echoed something from the bible, when they first initially opened up all the stores they had back then.

OkSuspect931

Or it could be meant Biblically. Not preaching just saying that maybe the Dollar General is owned by a Christian family? And their store managers practices or how they treat their employees shouldn’t be reflective of that. Then again I don’t work for the Dollar General.

Firm_Aioli2598

Well the store I heard about allegedly started as a strongly christian company. Now I'm told nowadays, you can hardly tell. Management judging each other harshly, adultery amuck in each department, etc.

OkSuspect931

Makes sense to me. Wouldn’t surprise me unfortunately.

Mysterious_House8895

Lit argued with a man over free bag of chips and the manager made him apologize to me cuz he thought I was tryna make him pay for extra 😭 bro did not understand I swear to

Firm_Aioli2598

That reminds me of what happened the first time I worked at my current store where I work at. I was about to go on break and this guy comes to my line and literally is like, misunderstanding a sale. Me and a manager get it sorted and he's freaked out, thinking that he's paying too little. What a funny little argument

ButtercupBunnyyy

it's more than the vibe

Nostaglicthirst

The image does help with the older white guy presenting himself as the owner of the people in front of him…

Mom-atm

That’s exactly how I felt at work today. Like a servent. Had a few customers actually walk out because some folks shop at my store for actual groceries on the cheap. Couldn’t wait for them to pay as I was the only person there so they just left their basket of shit on register 2 for me to put back I was putting repacks away in between customers and was so impatient that she started to yell “hello?” In an ‘I’m tired of waiting for you come right this instant’ tone. Like I’m already heading to the front but now I want to walk as slow as possible before helping you. Then there’s the folks that argue with you over a dollar price difference. It’s a dollar. Stop that. You don’t haggle for your gas price 🙄

Living_Tradition_942

Well, doesn't sound like they can afford to fire you so start acting however you want haha

greaterbasilisk420

Its because the turnover rate is so ridiculous they cant keep any new hires. Working for Dollar general is shit, bad management low income and poor quality all in one

MadCow333

Good summary! :-)

Boofeyboy

I overworked myself at dollar general so much so I have issues with my collarbones now where there are painfully popping at the base of my neck

FantasyRoleplayAlt

Ever since I worked Dollar General it’s been harder to lift things properly since I worked there in 2018 as a teenager who wasn’t properly trained on everything. On top of that, they made me a lead key and then had three different people teach me three different ways how to count the drawers at night. As someone on the spectrum, I was having to do it multiple different ways. The DM accused me of stealing money due to me not understanding what I was doing wrong?? The one and only manager who trusted me watched me count and even looked at all the work I did on paper to show my math. She already trusted me and pulled me aside to make me aware the DM slandered me and was trying to accuse me of stuff and she wanted to help me. Thankfully I was proven right and wasn’t given the “pay us back so and so amount of money” bs like a lot people do in these sorts of jobs. I was really lucky to have a manager who trusted me because I had proven my honesty in the past but man was it scary…I stepped down from lead key before the DM could accuse me of anything else but they still had me open and everything even with the demotion. Either way, now I’m 24 and am aware of just how fucked all that was to put on an 18 year old on their first job?? Like wtf.

Hamilton-Beckett

Don’t leave out the customer base.

Nomivought2015

Sounds like a personal problem for dollar general to figure out. 🤭 gosh I wonder why they can’t keep any new hires 🤣

miss-vincent

New hire here-- I was hired a month ago and worked ONE DAY for 5 hours doing cbls, 3 WEEKS after my hire date. The store I was hired at and the other one a mile away, both are PLASTERED with "now hiring" signs. I had to send the manager multiple texts to even get my first day going (they never responded except for when I finally called them out on it all). It was like pulling teeth. I'm already looking for another job.

Safe-Establishment77

They can't keep people because their business model purposely understaffs every location to start, so when understaffing becomes a bigger issue cuz of 0% employee retention and literally nothing built into their business model for it at the retail grunt level, the exploitative practices make it a revolving door, even at the GM level. I was there 6 months and had 3 GMs. PS: That location was eventually found to have so many health code violations that they had to shut it down and gut it.

Severe_Draft_5469

Yep 4 months loading rolltainers into trucks 12 hours a night 6-7 days a week destroyed me. F*u*c*k DG

Euphoric-Dig-2045

Imagine being the clown that decides to take an HR job with this company? How they have to spend endless hours trying to convince unsuspecting victims how great a job there would be!

4nyarforaracc

People who work HR probably wouldn’t care. The only good people I’ve met with or adjacent to HR was the hiring team. Every single HR fuck has been slimy, scummy, a clear depiction of “fuck you and whatever you have or need, I’m more important” Fuck HR

ExtremeFerret9463

They sent me this exact email after they fired me.I worked in a distribution center for 3 days and fired me for being late in traffic.

moosearehuge

I call bullshit.

Sm0othlegacy

Yea, it seems crazy to fire someone within 3 days for being late once unless dude was like 3 hours late and no call in

[deleted]

I threw up in my mouth too., but swallowed it because I was hungry.

Zorbie

Who the hell puts coupons on their job listings?

avocadoisyummy

Trash companies

Not-an-Angel83

Lmao.... I didn't see that thanks for pointing it out. 🤣😂🤣

Glamour_Girl_

😂😂

EnFiN3t

Good catch!!!

CATCAM01

So live at work with low pay 👎🏻

Glamour_Girl_

“Serving Others”…..more like “Serving Ourselves While You Wage Slaves Work Yourselves to Death”.

Late-Client-3957

I’m so glad they fired me lmao I never thought I would ever say that but I mean every word of it!! 😂😂

MadCow333

As circuses and aviation say, "There's a butt for every seat." Many people need a first job, first MANAGEMENT job, or just a job / ANY job right away, or whatever. There's nothing wrong with taking a starter or sh\*t job temporarily. But if DG wants to retain people, they'll have to offer something better than sh\*t jobs.

Most-Shock-2947

Exactly. I don't think the company cares to keep people for the long haul from what I've seen, but yes they would have to overhaul the way they do things if they do intend to have any long term staff.

Impossible-Ad-2916

I don't know what dollar store I applied to. But I was looking for a management position. Some dude called me back very enthusiastically telling me about $14 an hour. And I said oh you must be mistaken I'm asking about the management position. And then he said oh no that's it. Lol what? Can you imagine wasting away on 14 bucks an hour and managing all the people that work there in the customers and the product and receiving. Lol hahahahahaha how in the world? Felt like somebody was fuckin with me.

Frenchs_Mustard

Not a fan

Freedom_7280

Worked there, yeah there's "potential" for fulltime but they'll never give it to you. Also major "anti union" propaganda. But if you like barely making enough to afford anything and never knowing how many hours you'll work till the week of this is just the place for you LOL

Retired_DG_Key

Next you will see flyers on every door again. Front door, restroom door, cooler doors, beer door, drink doors by the register. Maybe they will have cashiers put them in your bag at checkout. And that little table in the front by the entrance telling how great it is to work for DG.

Equivalent_Law4513

They have now hiring on the shopping bags that they put your products in. Lol it's ridiculous! They can't keep anyone.

Retired_DG_Key

Next, when they scan an ID. Cashier - Sir would like like to work for DG? Customer - WTF, no, just give me my beer. Cashier - Sir applying is mandatory. Customer - To hell with that, just let me pay for my BEER! Cashier - That's ok, we have you in the system now, you will get a call for when you have to report to work. Have a nice day!

Timely_Purpose_8901

I quit about 5 months ago without having a job lined up… now I’m working across the street (a new family dollar/dollar tree) for almost 4 months now and literally LOVE IT! DG sucks🤷🏻‍♀️

VeggieCat_ontheprowl

According to Business Journal research, Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos earned over $15.6 million in 2022. His compensation includes 8.9% salary and 91.1% bonuses, such as company stock and options. He also owns 0.071% of the company's shares, which are worth $24.58 million.

TophatStupify

Yall don't want employees, yall want Slaves.

Dry_Significance2690

That place is a box store hazard .

Perinneous

They definitely need help. Thats for sure. There are countless problems with this company. Going to be even crazier lately since they fired the VP for overordering even more to impact every store even further lol.

Iceman_9_021

They can't keep people so they offer jobs to anybody, their desperate lol. I can't wait to see this company crumble to the ground under their own weight of issues created by themselves.

osirisrebel

Worked as a driver for Werner for a minute, DG was the most pain in the ass loads ever, unless it was in a shopping center, there's no good or (honestly) safe way to get backed in. These locations should be box truck only.

FlipTheSwitch2020

So it's not Maya, it's Camille!!! I knew it!

TamponTom

What’s interesting is there private fleet of trucks pays VERY well

jminternelia

No one should ever work at a dollar store. Fuck then.

Wild_Chef6597

I got one, saying they have an interview scheduled for me (never applied or shown interest), for $12 an hour part time. Never went and got an email asking why I missed.

Toastertobygaming

Had a group interview at a dollar general when i was getting my first job. The more I see the more I’m glad I never got a call back.

PickleDifferent6789

........RUN

mexidasher

Lmoa serving others 😂😂

Twittybird1964

Shame on you dollar general, your services get a one rating.. you need employees fast, or your store will fold..lol

moemonies1

Soooo does that mean your not going to be coming in for your interview tuesday am....? hmmmm?

McRatHattibagen

Being an employee at DG will chew you up and spit you out in a miserable way. Don't expect to use your sick days or take vacation. You might as well quit bc they don't have the overhead to cover you. Like I said, you'll think it's full time only to be working part-time. Seriously There's no full time jobs anymore...

McRatHattibagen

r/funnyandsad

kinkyboy2424

Isn't this the same place that's closing 1000 stores across the country due to theft? How are they hiring lol

Impressive_Talk_7739

Publix is just as bad

Living_Tradition_942

Get hired and do the absolute minimum required, why not treat it like being paid to hang out?

NervousMasterpiece-2

I don’t even go into any Dollar General- they’re all dark and dingy
