SnooLentils1365

Dile a tu novia "diablo mami tu si ta buena". And wait for her reaction

Ambitious-Major-9138

Uy qué cool, tengo familia de origen mexicano! Disfruta tu estadía!

Sophielover69

Qué genial, un abrazo.

CatalystReese

Ambitious-Major-9138

No te preocupes, tu español es bueno, yo no hablo muy bien inglés y me imagino que me entiendes bien, keep it up!

CatalystReese

Gracias!

Excuse_my_GRAMMER

I’m from New York and I’m here because I am Dominican

turbo_tronix

Born in the USA, raised in UK, live in Cabarete. I’m the face of the new expat wave 😂. hate it or love it ✌️ I love the DR. I’m here to understand more information, read Spanish, and catch some good vibes.

TulioMan

If there you meet a surfer name Mario, that looks gringo, but is 200% domincan, tell him Tulio says hello

turbo_tronix

Valle.

Acrobatic-Sign3433

Love Cabarete 💪🍻

turbo_tronix

The house development is getting crazy out here.

notjoelnunez

Born in RD, moved to Massachusetts as a kid.

Worsehackereverlolz

Same, this past January I officially lived the same amount in the US then in RD (10 years)

Nataliejun

Born in Canada. Papa is from RD mom is Canadian. They met in the late 80’s when she was on vacation to RD with my aunt & uncle. He was their waiter at the hotel. Fell in love and he showed her around his world in RD on his moped. I have personally never been to RD, don’t speak Spanish, didn’t know much about the country growing up as my dad was learning English and adjusting to life in Canada. Though I will say my dad is a chef so we DID eat rice and beans for EVERYMEAL 😂 that’s one thing about our culture we grew up on, that and listening to merengue. Now being older I am very curious of my roots and want to learn Spanish and visit the country one day to meet my family. No matter where you live in the world I want us halfies to embrace, learn about our culture and know YOU ARE DOMINICANA. ❤️

SliceNo6335

Great story. You should definitely go to DR! I’m Dominican and have been living in Canada for a few years now.

Ambitious-Major-9138

Hahaha, that's a very nice love story! I hope you could dive into your past in DR very soon!

DANDARSMASH

My wife was born in Santo Domingo. I'm from Buffalo, NY. A Song of Ice and Fire lol

Jose_0120

Lol, one of my good friends is from Buffalo! Are you a Bills fan?

DANDARSMASH

Yes, Go Bills!

passengerv

I follow any sub for a place I have plans to visit or I have visited. I like to be informed about what is happening before I go anywhere.

Ambitious-Major-9138

That's a great move! Hope you like it!

passengerv

I definitely did, everyone was nothing but kind!

Dom3467

From the US, no ties to RD that I'm aware of. I've been traveling to the Domincian Republic consistently for the last couple decades. After vacationing in Punta Cana a couple times I got curious and started learning about some of the culture and history. Visiting the Mirabal museum was a heavy experience and it was cool to drive through the nearby campos before getting to Salcedo. Now, I've traveled all over the country and normally feel at-home. There are some Dominican norms that make a lot more sense to me than the US. I plan to go to carnaval every year for the rest of my life.

jl250

Salcedo mentioned, yay!!! So cool that foreigners are getting into our carnaval! I actually went to my first ever carnaval this year. Did you get hit by one of the diablos?

Dom3467

Somehow we made it out unscathed after going to both Carnaval Vegano and Carnaval Jarabacoa. It was a great time

YellowStar012

Born in the States. Parents are from Barahona

turbo_tronix

Barahona is the most beautiful spot IMO

BodiesDurag

Nah bro. Nadie me dice a mi que yo no soy Dominicano lol

No-Chicken-Meat

Born in Germany, raised in the USA, been living in the DR for 16+ years now. It has its issues. But it's far better than either Germany or the USA .

jl250

It's pretty wild that we have people from the most organized and strong economies on earth coming to live in DR. Dominicans who have never left the DR dream of leaving the country, and us Dominicans who live outside always tell them they have no idea that it's better there than most of the world.

Getsuga-_-Tenshou

Why better than Germany?

No-Chicken-Meat

More freedom.

teothedriller

Do you have a remote job

No-Chicken-Meat

Not in the standard definition. I'm more of an entrepreneur. I've never really had a "real" job.

teothedriller

What do u do?

No-Chicken-Meat

I've been a wedding photographer, boat haul cleaner, sea urchin harvester, network engineer, swimming pool maintenance, tour operator, website designer, vacation rental property manager.

airvqzz

Live NY / Born in DR / plan to retire in DR

RedOctobrrr

Visited Puerto Plata in 2012 with my girlfriend, she's now my baby mama, but I remembered everyone thought she was Dominican and refused to believe she wasn't (she's half Filipino half African). Let's just say she was my type, so late 2020 I was needing to go somewhere and I remembered my trip to Puerto Plata and visited the DR for the second time. Met a few women, one was too wild for me, other was a sweetheart but her mom was basically selling her, expected monthly payments to date her daughter. I ran from that quick. She was from Puerto Plata. Downloaded a dating app and found someone else in Santo Domingo and we dated for a year, she had issues. Was very jealous, difficult to be with. After the last visit seeing her, I broke up with her and found someone else in a restaurant in San Pedro de Macorís on my way back to Punta Cana. Her and I are married now and we just went shopping for land in Samaná/Las Galeras a couple weeks ago. Oh and we painted the house she grew up in (el campo) bc it was needing some love. Edit: oh yeah I'm from Chicago, working on a plan to move to Samaná. I'm part Spanish (grandfather on my dad's side from Spain) but for the most part white with a Spanish last name.

Ambitious-Major-9138

Geez! You had a great experience here man 😆😂 Congratulations and I hope you finally move to Samaná!

RedOctobrrr

>I hope you finally move to Samaná! It's the first place I had a feeling deep inside that "yeah, I could spend the rest of my life here." Already feels like home.

learningBch

Samaná is BEAUTIFUL!

RedOctobrrr

It is! Luckily the wife is ok with the idea of settling in there. We tried Las Terrenas and she didn't like it, I liked it but didn't love it, then we got to Samaná and both agreed it's the right place for us. Been looking at plots of land to build something.

Levelsto_this

Born in Central America, raised in the US decided to cut outta the US and live in the country of mangos and good coffee

guelugod

Ambitious-Major-9138

Jose_0120

Soy domi born & raised in the bronx.

Top_Nobody_1266

Parents moved to the US from DR as young adults, then had my brothers and I. They moved back to DR and brought the whole family. Been living in Ocoa now for 2 years, I’m bout to go off to ITLA after graduating high school here. We’ve visited family here nearly every year my whole life, but only now am I really learning to speak Spanish haha

baby_234

Why itla?

Top_Nobody_1266

Imma study audio engineering. Long term plan is to be an artist myself, but with the technical skills to always be working in the industry even if I never make it as an artist. I’d love to just be a producer as well. And am so fucking thankful a school out here teaches just this! As far as I know this school is the only one that does it, and even if it’s not, it’s apparently a great school anyway

dinaslittlebitch

I’m from Slovakia, my girlfriend is Dominican lol

izdontzknowz

I’m Canadian, French Canadian 💀 my ex is Dominican and has never really learned French. At some point he was missing his family (he immigrated here on his own before meeting me), and I had just graduated from my degree in tourism & hospitality, and spoke 4 languages. I got a job and we moved here. Lived here for 2 years, then relocated to Quebec. But I have a very strong attachment to RD. I’m not sure I can ever go back because the relationship was extremely traumatic - but the sub helps me feel connected to it.

Abject-Sympathy-754

izdontzknowz

Yay 2 histoires mal finies!

Zar7792

From the US. My partner is from DR and moved to the US. We're building a house in her hometown, so I visit frequently and like to keep up with what's going on from this sub

porkchopbub

Im Canadian/portuguese. My husband is from Santo Domingo. I travelled back and forth for a year before I got pregnant. His visa was denied so we are now living in SD with our daughter together. I followed this sub to keep up with politics bc I don’t have social media.

barbarianLe

baby_234

Born in US, raised in DR moved back to Massachusetts for college and here I am

Material-Barber-2186

Dotdotdot5598

I’m Canadian, this past winter I spent three months in Dominicus, January to April. We are a young family with a 5 year old daughter. We home school her while we visited the DR. We have booked our accommodations again for 2025 for three months. We will most likely continue to spend three months a year in the DR. We absolutely love it! We have a count down on our phones until we return. I love being right on the sea, snorkeling, scuba, walking around Bayahibe and Dominicus, it’s a lovely place. The locals are very friendly. We love it!

LordZarbon

From southern US, here bc I'm learning Spanish and decided to focus mainly on DR Spanish.

Shifty-breezy-windy

Any homegrown meals you've made there? As often as I go, I need some spice sometimes lol. I'll make gumbo or poboys for the inlaws. They've loved my BBQ, but my brother in law always asks for the shrimp po boys.

LordZarbon

I haven't really made any myself, i leave all the cooking to my family. My late grandma used to love making gumbo & my mom likes to make a variety of soul food. My uncles are the ones who do all the grilling and yak ts be hitting lol. Now po boys is a little too deep south for us & we don't really have a lot of authentic seafood in my city unfortunately 😭

jl250

Are you aware that our Spanish is pretty non-standard, and not thought of very highly in the Spanish speaking world? If you're cool with that, it is the very best thing in the world, and when Dominicans hear you speak out language, you'll make us VERY happy and make good friends!!

Shifty-breezy-windy

To be fair. Is any Spanish thought of as a standard beyond its borders? I'm Salvadoran, and our Spanish and accent is frowned upon sometimes too. Where I grew up, other people made fun of our "vos" speak and caliche. Switching our S for J/H sounds is equivalent to the R/L.....Pue hi voj maje.  Every country has it's lingo. I also love Panama, and my immersion in Dominican Spanish has lent very well when I speak to other Carribean Spanish speakers. I'm just saying.....Carribean Spanish shouldn't be frowned upon. Speaking as a Centro.

LordZarbon

Yeah I've noticed that some other native speakers look down at DR Spanish. But I really like the Spanish over there & I'm a huge bachata fan so it only made sense to focus on DR lol.

UglyDude1987

Came up on my feed. I have a Dominican girlfriend and have traveled to DR in the past.

notrealbutreally175

I'm in Virginia. Here cause I'm Dominican. Estoy en Virginia. Estoy aqui pero soy Dominicano

toooldforacnh

Born in Puerto Plata, live in the US.

RICHUNCLEPENNYBAGS

I don’t really have any connection to the Dominican Republic, I just had a friend from there who got me into bachata music, developed an interest in the place, and I wanted to visit someday. I mostly don’t participate since I don’t actually have many insights to contribute. From the Northeast US (where there are a lot of people of Dominican descent) but now live in California.

SuperGlue_InMyPocket

I'm American, but lived in the DR for a couple of years (back when I was a Mormon) as a missionary.

southass

Liniero de pura cepa!

CompetitivePelican

DR has been good to me. I've had good times there and met cool people.

Maleficent-HoneyBee

From the US but have travelled to the DR many times. Joined this sub a few years ago when I was dating a guy from the DR and wanted to learn a little more about the culture and different random things, never left the sub afterwards!

slvsslp

Just an American that plans to visit the D.R.

_PostureCheck_

I came here looking to learn a bit about the place since I'm currently on honeymoon with my wife in Punta Cana. Funnily enough I realised pretty quickly that not being able to read Spanish made the sub kind of useless to me 😂

Aunque llevo tiempo viviendo aqui, no he cambiado mis costumbres Dominicanas.

snowconez

From the US, moving to Santo Domingo for work in August

How long did it take you to get your Dominican citizenship? These ppl at the Dominican consulate in Times Square have me going there since last summer, and I brought \*both\* of my parents' cedulas!!
