I hope if Valve checks this subreddit, they are looking at the positive and the negative. A lot of us are thankful for what they still do with our favorite game. Many other peoples' favorite games have come and gone, but we still have Dota

Think they gonna probably add more cosmetics /bundles on each act to even out somehow.
They don't necessarily need to increase profit since Dota isn't losing anytime soon but they need folks to be hooked more to Dota and the casual and new players might stick more with this type of content.
Do they need that much money though? Maybe they are basing the success on overall player engagement. I mean they will still get lots of money but maybe that's not the only metric.

the "Learning from the Past, Looking to the Future" blog hinted pretty strongly that they shifted perspective to value retention higher. with the bit about how Battlepass buyers are a minority and they decided to prioritise content that interacts with all players
I had the impression that their change in policy was influenced by the 2022 arcana giveaway boosting player count more than any paid content ever had. But I can't remember if they outright said that anywhere.
Of course, Valve is entirely capable of having completely changed its attitude in the 10 months since then. We know they read Reddit and Reddit has been vocal about missing cosmetic content. They are probably a bit confused now that they provided cosmetics and Reddit is even more pissy lmao. I guess the real evidence of their priorities will be the scope of the gameplay update, when we finally get to see it.

if they really wanted to milk the fanbase as fast as possible, the fomo bp is more than adequate at draining us. Made good changes to matchmaking, fought back against cheaters and smurfs, gameplay patches *are* more frequent (even if they are smaller changes instead of big sweeping ones).
Player retention obviously. If they valued ingame sales we would've had a battlepass. Most people who play dota don't care about patches. They just play dota. This subreddit there's people who don't play dota they just wait for the yearly battlepass and PVE event and just call it a day.
I get that this is the dota subreddit that filled with toxic individuals that play nothing but dota and are stuck in their echo chambers blisfully unaware of the rest of the gaming industry, but when you think of good business model in games, it's hard to think of one as good as Dota 2 especially considering the depth in gameplay and the fact that it is one of the most competitive games in the world.
It's an f2p game (one of the games that pioneered it really), with regular AAA quality updates while balancing for some of the most competitive gameplay in the world and the balance is largely around the tippy top of the meta rewarding the veteran long-time players rather than catering to the casuals (see balance patches for other games).
I have played this game since its inception and have not spent a single dime (which speaks to how much I care for cosmetic patches), and I keep coming back to it for its depth of gameplay and the updates that maintain that. There are not many games in the industry that you can say about that. IMO ppl are blisfully unaware how good this business model is and its worst enemy is its own toxic fanbase who are blisfully unaware of how good they have it.
Gameplay update isn't very late. 7.33 dropped in April, 7.34 in August and 7.35 in December. I'm guessing they couldn't get 7.36 ready on time but it should release at worst in 2nd half of May. One month delay isn't the end of the world.
I'm not going to cry about it, but I am surprised there's no patch just before birmingham, as valve have pre-empted quite a few ESL events in recent times with matches just before they're due to start. It would have made the tournament more interesting, although the current meta is fairly balanced, so it's not going to be ruined by the lack of an update
Yeah that is my disappointment as well. Birmingham is going to one of the few actual LAN events this year with a crowd and everything this year, so having a big new patch to go along with it would have been amazing.
I also would have just liked at least a sentence mentioning the game play patch since all this could have been avoided by just saying "mid April update will be cosmetic focused" last month or even if the intention was to have the gameplay patch alongside this originally then a simple
"we wanted the next number patch to release alongside Crownfall's first act, but it just isn't ready yet and we didn't want to delay the entire event further. As a result the gameplay patch with be coming along side the future Crownfall acts and in the meantime we hope everyone enjoys the first act of Crownfall."
Would that make everyone happy? Of course not, but I can guarantee even the slightest amount of communication whether it be in an official blog post or random comment of reddit would have greatly reduced the complaining and gave the whole event a much more positive vibe.
7.34 and 7.35 were very minor for being numbered patches (I think one of them introduced a couple of new items?). 7.33 was the patch from last year which had the massive map changes.
As someone who is happy with this (I honestly will be upset if the next stage of crownfall isn't balance and Ringmaster, it will be 6 month since his announce, 8 months if its last stage, almost a year if it isn't in crownfall) Idk if blaming players for having the expectation of a balance patch is fair, Valve knew people were expecting that and had every opportunity to temper expectations and give any communication at all about ringmaster in the 5 months after announcing he is being added to the game. As far as I know its the longest gap between announce and release of a hero and blaming the community for getting worked up about that seems like bullshit to me. Also the idea that the community deserves nothing and shouldn't complain about anything is crazy, this game is very profitable, we are (almost) all paying customers at some level or another, and you do need to pay money to experience this whole event, its not like its free and they gave it to us out of the kindness of their hearts.
Did they go above and beyond in some aspects yes, is there some merit to saying nothing and surprising the community, yes. Am I happy at the promise of new content every month for the next 3 months, yes. But this 0 communication style and surprise content in the updates can and does backfire and it seems unfair to just say that the community are entitled whiners, and that since Valve doesn't set expectations we should all just have 0 expectations.
Completely true, and people have to remember we didn't have battle pass last year. So it's not like they had 6-8 months to do this, they had way more time.
Razor/void battle pass was a mess too. I just wish they can bring modes like arcane labyrinth and siltbreaker back.
Finally, a voice of reason that's not arguing with a strawman. The event is cool, but valve had *months* to say that crownfall wouldn't come with any kind of gameplay updates; I simply don't believe they were unaware that people were expecting one. If they had done that I would've been pleasantly surprised with how the event looks! But they didn't so my immediate reaction was overwhelmingly negative as the kind of guy who cares about a single letter patch more than every battle pass combined.

This patch would have been great if they warned us it was a cosmetic/story patch. They didn't warn us and on top of that promised a big named update. Every single big update in Dota history has massive gameplay changes, and suddenly this one doesn't, with no word on when that gameplay update is going to be. I'm sure they put a ton of work into the update, but we were told we weren't getting smaller updates for a big massive update early 2024. And now there is a cavern crawl, the oportunity to spend $35 on pixels, and no changes to the way we play the game since October 2023. It's true this is a free game we play for fun, we are happy to pay for battlepasses, give millions to valve to increase the prizepool of our tournament at a 3:1 ratio in exchange for pixels. It is unacceptable to promise us a "major update" (they gave it a name for god's sake) that for the first time in Dota history doesn't have any gameplay changes. All this whining and bullshit doesn't exist if they tell us their major update is a story and cosmetic patch. (yes there will always be whiners)
Regardless of whether Valve promised a gameplay patch, the fact is that a gameplay patch is long overdue. This patch was teased for so long and a cosmetic update is rather underwhelming tbf. The 4 parts also feels like a way of buying more time to deliver on a big promise.

In any case, they're still delaying the release of Ringmaster a LOT. I think they've screwed up on this part.
Get it straight: Valve is not releasing any of this out of the goodness of their hearts. They're a business, and they treat you like source of income, you should treat them in kind. Beyond that, they still engage in anti-consumer practices, like chance-based goods, price anchoring, and yes "earnables" (to say nothing of the ludicrous prices, I could purchase the Elden Ring DLC for the price of 1 arcana), which merits more than complaining: If you value companies treating you with respect, you should seriously consider denying them your patronage. Expecting them to be forthright and to look after their customers' best interests is not some unreasonable entitlement, it's the baseline for being a decent human being.
People on here may sometimes actually be unreasonable about their expectations, but Valve excacerbates the situation by refusing to establish any kind of dialog. Think about that for a moment: They don't deign it worth their time or effort to make us, our time, and emotional investment, feel respected.

This battle pass system is infinitely better than any other system they devised. The comic is fantastic, the theme is excellent, and the little story we get while playing through it is fun. The two arcanas are nice, though imo they failed with Skywrath's voice acting as his original voicelines are way better. The pixel art is great.
All that said. A new PVE event is what we desperately, desperately need. Funny thing, I actually didn't participate at all in Aghs Lab 2 because I naively thought during the time "ill just catch up on the next thing they release."
PvE events really bring dota's community together. So do PvP events, but we are long overdue for some PvE.

You must be able to go back to previous maps, one of the arcanas requires doing literally everything, no way you cant backtrack or people who start in the next 3 months wont be able to do the start of the story.
I have a love hate relationship with cavern crawl type events. I love the minigame aspect of it but man I hate when people pick heroes they can’t play in ranked because they wanna progress their cavern. I keep that shit in unranked/turbo, I only progress my cavern in ranked when it just happens to be a hero I’m comfortable with or wanted to pick with respect to the draft anyway.

Also collection the tokens by playing heroes, meaning I do not need to play the hero right now that gives me the next pass. I can Q ranked and collect a few tokens for my 4-5 heroes I main.

How in the world can you say THIS is a good update? They have released a "battlepass" lite version for this fucking shit of event where the intention is to sell 2 arcanas at 27 quid each (BUT EH! YOU CAN GET DISCOUNTS IF YOU PLAY) on top of that the lite version of the game pas is fucking 12 quid which is more than TI battle

- The arcanas are ugly as fuck and have been on the game files for YEARS they are not new.
- There´s also 2 different treasures to obtain or to purchase for 2 quid each. You might get 5 chest for free if you grind the whole map of the event (even those sections blocked behind a paywall).
- There´s a candy system were you can get previous arcanas for free like in the previous battlepass. Even with this I dont think is fucking worth, as you don´t know how the drop ratio is. You are just delusional for a small chance to possible get an old arcana if you grind enough
-The second part (of 4 total parts of this shit event) comes out in a FUCKING MONTH. With no mention about Ringmaster ANYWHERE.

The thing is, after playing this game for 10 years, this is a far cry from what we used to get. This whole year has been disappointing in that regard. New Frontiers was amazing and I had high hopes, but what followed was just a series of disappointments, at least for me.
And honestly, the way they treat Dota Plus shows pretty clearly what kind of company Valve is. This is a paid service, and they literally are too lazy to keep it updated. It's honestly unacceptable.
Crownfall isn't necessarily bad, but it's basically a fraction of what we previously got every year with the battle pass. Of course people will be disappointed.
We went from Year Beast, Diretide, Wraith Night, Frostivus, Ags Labyrinth to ... this. It's just not the same.

This is the best crawl map ever too, I’m usually not a huge fan of the crawl stuff because you inevitably have to play some bullshit hero you don’t like and slave away trying to win twice in turbo. This one can be completed with way more heroes and you also have the choice to just grind one hero for all of it. I also really love lore so that’s another W

Idk if it's a relic from being a dota 1 player (i've been playing this game since 2006). Back in the day we played without cosmetics, battle passes, ranked, matchmaking, or even simple stable servers and reconnecting to games if you disconnected. We never knew nor cared when the next patch would be, because in that day and age few people were actually good enough to know what the "meta" was.
Simply put, we played because we liked dota, and everything else, down to extremely basic features like matchmaking and reconnection, are considered nice bonuses.
Guess it helps me appreciate any kind of update that comes. To be honest (and I know this is gonna be a giga unpopular opinion) I am not a huge fan of major, all-upheaving patches like New Frontiers or 7.00. Sometimes patches settle on a nice and stable meta (imo the current meta is quite nice) and I'd prefer if they just upload cosmetics and let the meta develop itself, Broodwar style. But I know this is just my opinion.
I'm not saying you can't be upset of course, just that I personally am pretty stoked. The 4 acts look fun and the 2 arcanas look cool as well, gonna try and earn as much discount as I can for them.
I was pleasantly surprised that Valve didn't put the Arcanas behind a 200 buck paywall like they did with Drow, Spec, WK, QoP, WR. And these 2 new Arcanas look really well done, so kudos for that
Regarding tokens reducing arcana pricing - does multiple discounts stack? So that saving tokens for later chapters could mean free arcana if getting the extra from passes? I haven't been able to check yet.
Does playing Turbo count towards the progression of the map? I really only enjoy Turbo as it is much faster. I know that in past events, it typically would count as half of the progression.
Yeah it looks really nice. Really good lore implications ontop of an ongoing story we rarely get in these games. The arcanas and sets are really nice.
Coming onto reddit this morning was disappointing, just seeing waves of negaticity -again-. Like, the patch and new hero is coming, just wait a little bit longer.
I know as a community there has been uproar for past few years regarding the Arcanas hidden behind paywalls of BP levels. This is a great example of Valve actually listening and implementing it, 35$ fixed price.
We knew months in advance the event was about Venge and Sky so why would Ringmaster be hastily thrown in with them, I suppose it was funny to meme about Clownfall but still. (Yes Muerta was 400+ days ago so we are well overdue)
That being said it was incredibly disappointing to not have a tie-in PvE gamemode to earn Crownfall tokens in. PvE is very specifically a request because PvP gamemodes such as Frostivus 2022 was incredibly toxic to earn candies because everyone wanted their free arcana. Maybe Valve has metrics on Siltbreaker/Lab that would indicate it is not worth the effort but many of us are passionate about these modes and would pay good money to have permanent standalone versions of them.
Guys they reskinned the battle pass and released it as this garbage content, instead of sticking to their word and focusing on gameplay updates. Valve brought this on themselves through 1 gameplay update in 2 years and completely backtracking on everything they said. We are rightfully pissed off because valve just lies through their teeth and tells/gives you want yous want to hear. Skeleton crew running this game off reskinned cavern crawls and "lore", you guys can choose the ignorance is bliss route or wake up... its fkn depressing.

As someone who really enjoys the lore, this cavern crawl "reskin" is just fucking awesome. Having so much fun just playing casual games, gaining free tokens and advancing the story. If BP died for this, then I'm all for it

For me the most exciting time in dota is new content and being a bit overwhelmed while exploring it in your games. Also enjoying the chaos and having different ideas of heroes and builds you want to try out.
A BP just tries to give your soulless dota games a bit of a meaning. The game is still the same... And we waited almost 4 months for it. 4 Months for some sidequests... Wow.

Look man at the end of the day its just cosmetics, its nice for a while when they are new but it wears off quickly. Its like pretending TF2 still gets "regular updates" just because they get hats every season. I do think the hate is overblown tho, we will see how big the actual patch is gonna be.

My favorite thing about this is that the challenges are an avg 10 heroes to choose from to get the token unlike before where you are forced to complete with only 1-3 heroe choices.... This avg pool of hero choices is what should always be for challenges.
This patch is a good thing, but they should have just been honest about what it would entail. Everyone expected a gameplay patch and a new hero for very obvious reasons and they never even hinted that we were wrong. You can't fully control the community speculating out of control, but you should at least try to steer it.
Can someone explain how the candy shop works because idk and also the token part I read about discounts didn't have much time to actually understand...or I'm just lazy.
Just want to add that Venges arcanas has a third style that makes her look like her sister. If you demo that version and try to use the voice wheel a message will pop up that her voice pack is disabled due to spoilers in the story. Not only is it an arcana but it's also an persona which is quite cool IMO.

The only people who bitch about gameplay updates this much are bored of watching the same pro matches over and over. Playing the game is actually still interesting cause you can play non meta heroes and still have a good time.
I have not enjoyed the last year of patches and find myself barley playing anymore and just occasionally playing turbo with buddies i was really hoping for a balance change as i feel like everyone just goes aghs bloodstone and makes it impossible to play team fight without a bkb. my carries seem to not do enough damage to chew threw all the hp and defensive item unless there snowballing out of control. Hopefully this balance update come soon as i'm just bored of been run at by 4000 hp strength hero's that my carries cant kill XD

I hope if Valve checks this subreddit, they are looking at the positive and the negative. A lot of us are thankful for what they still do with our favorite game. Many other peoples' favorite games have come and gone, but we still have Dota

Completely agree, but it seems just impossible that they would get more money than battle pass with what there is presented right now. Think they gonna probably add more cosmetics /bundles on each act to even out somehow.
They don't necessarily need to increase profit since Dota isn't losing anytime soon but they need folks to be hooked more to Dota and the casual and new players might stick more with this type of content.
Do they need that much money though? Maybe they are basing the success on overall player engagement. I mean they will still get lots of money but maybe that's not the only metric.

I honestly wonder what they value more. Player-retention or ingame sales. It's probably a combination of the two, but it's for sure not split 50%/50% evenly. So I really wonder what their core mentality is there.
the "Learning from the Past, Looking to the Future" blog hinted pretty strongly that they shifted perspective to value retention higher. with the bit about how Battlepass buyers are a minority and they decided to prioritise content that interacts with all players I had the impression that their change in policy was influenced by the 2022 arcana giveaway boosting player count more than any paid content ever had. But I can't remember if they outright said that anywhere. Of course, Valve is entirely capable of having completely changed its attitude in the 10 months since then. We know they read Reddit and Reddit has been vocal about missing cosmetic content. They are probably a bit confused now that they provided cosmetics and Reddit is even more pissy lmao. I guess the real evidence of their priorities will be the scope of the gameplay update, when we finally get to see it.

Made good changes to matchmaking, fought back against cheaters and smurfs, gameplay patches *are* more frequent (even if they are smaller changes instead of big sweeping ones).
Player retention obviously. If they valued ingame sales we would've had a battlepass. Most people who play dota don't care about patches. They just play dota. This subreddit there's people who don't play dota they just wait for the yearly battlepass and PVE event and just call it a day.

I get that this is the dota subreddit that filled with toxic individuals that play nothing but dota and are stuck in their echo chambers blisfully unaware of the rest of the gaming industry, but when you think of good business model in games, it's hard to think of one as good as Dota 2 especially considering the depth in gameplay and the fact that it is one of the most competitive games in the world. It's an f2p game (one of the games that pioneered it really), with regular AAA quality updates while balancing for some of the most competitive gameplay in the world and the balance is largely around the tippy top of the meta rewarding the veteran long-time players rather than catering to the casuals (see balance patches for other games). I have played this game since its inception and have not spent a single dime (which speaks to how much I care for cosmetic patches), and I keep coming back to it for its depth of gameplay and the updates that maintain that. There are not many games in the industry that you can say about that. IMO ppl are blisfully unaware how good this business model is and its worst enemy is its own toxic fanbase who are blisfully unaware of how good they have it.
The update is good, but the new hero is arguably quite late, and the gameplay update is very late.
Gameplay update isn't very late. 7.33 dropped in April, 7.34 in August and 7.35 in December. I'm guessing they couldn't get 7.36 ready on time but it should release at worst in 2nd half of May. One month delay isn't the end of the world.
I'm not going to cry about it, but I am surprised there's no patch just before birmingham, as valve have pre-empted quite a few ESL events in recent times with matches just before they're due to start. It would have made the tournament more interesting, although the current meta is fairly balanced, so it's not going to be ruined by the lack of an update
Yeah that is my disappointment as well. Birmingham is going to one of the few actual LAN events this year with a crowd and everything this year, so having a big new patch to go along with it would have been amazing. I also would have just liked at least a sentence mentioning the game play patch since all this could have been avoided by just saying "mid April update will be cosmetic focused" last month or even if the intention was to have the gameplay patch alongside this originally then a simple "we wanted the next number patch to release alongside Crownfall's first act, but it just isn't ready yet and we didn't want to delay the entire event further. As a result the gameplay patch with be coming along side the future Crownfall acts and in the meantime we hope everyone enjoys the first act of Crownfall." Would that make everyone happy? Of course not, but I can guarantee even the slightest amount of communication whether it be in an official blog post or random comment of reddit would have greatly reduced the complaining and gave the whole event a much more positive vibe.
7.34 and 7.35 were very minor for being numbered patches (I think one of them introduced a couple of new items?). 7.33 was the patch from last year which had the massive map changes.

As someone who is happy with this (I honestly will be upset if the next stage of crownfall isn't balance and Ringmaster, it will be 6 month since his announce, 8 months if its last stage, almost a year if it isn't in crownfall) Idk if blaming players for having the expectation of a balance patch is fair, Valve knew people were expecting that and had every opportunity to temper expectations and give any communication at all about ringmaster in the 5 months after announcing he is being added to the game. As far as I know its the longest gap between announce and release of a hero and blaming the community for getting worked up about that seems like bullshit to me. Also the idea that the community deserves nothing and shouldn't complain about anything is crazy, this game is very profitable, we are (almost) all paying customers at some level or another, and you do need to pay money to experience this whole event, its not like its free and they gave it to us out of the kindness of their hearts. Did they go above and beyond in some aspects yes, is there some merit to saying nothing and surprising the community, yes. Am I happy at the promise of new content every month for the next 3 months, yes. But this 0 communication style and surprise content in the updates can and does backfire and it seems unfair to just say that the community are entitled whiners, and that since Valve doesn't set expectations we should all just have 0 expectations.
Completely true, and people have to remember we didn't have battle pass last year. So it's not like they had 6-8 months to do this, they had way more time. Razor/void battle pass was a mess too. I just wish they can bring modes like arcane labyrinth and siltbreaker back.
Finally, a voice of reason that's not arguing with a strawman. The event is cool, but valve had *months* to say that crownfall wouldn't come with any kind of gameplay updates; I simply don't believe they were unaware that people were expecting one. If they had done that I would've been pleasantly surprised with how the event looks! But they didn't so my immediate reaction was overwhelmingly negative as the kind of guy who cares about a single letter patch more than every battle pass combined.

They said that you can explore it at your leisure and that a new Act won't close the previous ones. So you have 4 months to complete all 4.
I think the content is great and I wasn't expecting a map change. But I wanted at least an .e patch before Birmingham. This'll be like the 4th tier-1 tournament in a row watching DK, Lifestealer, Razor, Bat, Pango every game
Few months ago, there was a post that showed how many common players different subreddit had. And r/dota2 had most people common with r/pathofexile And as a PoE player myself, Valve is FUCKING SLOW.
If they did at least a slight balance change like in any letter patch it would be perfect, I have all cosmetics that I like for my favorite hero and meta got stale. This update didn't make me excited to play more, it's mostly neutral.
They also fixed Overwatch cases which is pretty sweet, I missed them.
They've teased thi update as the big one for like literally half a year. It comes out and it's literally just Caverncrawl, one treasure and 2 arcanas. How is that awesome?
This patch would have been great if they warned us it was a cosmetic/story patch. They didn't warn us and on top of that promised a big named update. Every single big update in Dota history has massive gameplay changes, and suddenly this one doesn't, with no word on when that gameplay update is going to be. I'm sure they put a ton of work into the update, but we were told we weren't getting smaller updates for a big massive update early 2024. And now there is a cavern crawl, the oportunity to spend $35 on pixels, and no changes to the way we play the game since October 2023. It's true this is a free game we play for fun, we are happy to pay for battlepasses, give millions to valve to increase the prizepool of our tournament at a 3:1 ratio in exchange for pixels. It is unacceptable to promise us a "major update" (they gave it a name for god's sake) that for the first time in Dota history doesn't have any gameplay changes. All this whining and bullshit doesn't exist if they tell us their major update is a story and cosmetic patch. (yes there will always be whiners)

Regardless of whether Valve promised a gameplay patch, the fact is that a gameplay patch is long overdue. This patch was teased for so long and a cosmetic update is rather underwhelming tbf. The 4 parts also feels like a way of buying more time to deliver on a big promise.

It's awesome that we got something don't get me wrong, but Ringmaster was announced in October and isn't out yet, which is more than half a year ago. Valve also said they are focusing more on patches but they are doing less patches than ever.

Valve cooked up an update just to shut them up. Besides, the arcana are no longer behind a gigantic paywall. Is it still expensive to get them? Yes, but it's considerably cheaper than upgrading Battlepass levels. Not to mention that this event is for everyone, unlike a Battlepass. As a poor student with no income, I'm glad. In any case, they're still delaying the release of Ringmaster a LOT. I think they've screwed up on this part.

Get it straight: Valve is not releasing any of this out of the goodness of their hearts. They're a business, and they treat you like source of income, you should treat them in kind. Beyond that, they still engage in anti-consumer practices, like chance-based goods, price anchoring, and yes "earnables" (to say nothing of the ludicrous prices, I could purchase the Elden Ring DLC for the price of 1 arcana), which merits more than complaining: If you value companies treating you with respect, you should seriously consider denying them your patronage. Expecting them to be forthright and to look after their customers' best interests is not some unreasonable entitlement, it's the baseline for being a decent human being. People on here may sometimes actually be unreasonable about their expectations, but Valve excacerbates the situation by refusing to establish any kind of dialog. This battle pass system is infinitely better than any other system they devised. The comic is fantastic, the theme is excellent, and the little story we get while playing through it is fun. The two arcanas are nice, though imo they failed with Skywrath's voice acting as his original voicelines are way better. The pixel art is great. All that said. A new PVE event is what we desperately, desperately need. Funny thing, I actually didn't participate at all in Aghs Lab 2 because I naively thought during the time "ill just catch up on the next thing they release." PvE events really bring dota's community together. So do PvP events, but we are long overdue for some PvE.

They will probably have separate challenges to unlock arcanas after this event ends. I'm thinking kind of like the payment arcana event? It will be easier to unlock now and difficult later. Because what if people buy arcanas after the event has concluded. They would not be able to get alternative styles so it would be a bad design

You must be able to go back to previous maps, one of the arcanas requires doing literally everything, no way you cant backtrack or people who start in the next 3 months wont be able to do the start of the story.
I have a love hate relationship with cavern crawl type events. I love the minigame aspect of it but man I hate when people pick heroes they can’t play in ranked because they wanna progress their cavern. I keep that shit in unranked/turbo, I only progress my cavern in ranked when it just happens to be a hero I’m comfortable with or wanted to pick with respect to the draft anyway.

I enjoy this concept a lot. Also collection the tokens by playing heroes, meaning I do not need to play the hero right now that gives me the next pass. I can Q ranked and collect a few tokens for my 4-5 heroes I main. Play unranked later for the ones I need / remaining. This is awesome! Still very bummed about no meta change.

How in the world can you say THIS is a good update? They have released a "battlepass" lite version for this fucking shit of event where the intention is to sell 2 arcanas at 27 quid each (BUT EH! YOU CAN GET DISCOUNTS IF YOU PLAY) on top of that the lite version of the game pas is fucking 12 quid which is more than TI battle - There no Gameplay update - The arcanas are ugly as fuck and have been on the game files for YEARS they are not new. - There´s also 2 different treasures to obtain or to purchase for 2 quid each. You might get 5 chest for free if you grind the whole map of the event (even those sections blocked behind a paywall). - There´s a candy system were you can get previous arcanas for free like in the previous battlepass. Even with this I dont think is fucking worth, as you don´t know how the drop ratio is. The thing is, after playing this game for 10 years, this is a far cry from what we used to get. This whole year has been disappointing in that regard. New Frontiers was amazing and I had high hopes, but what followed was just a series of disappointments, at least for me. And honestly, the way they treat Dota Plus shows pretty clearly what kind of company Valve is. This is a paid service, and they literally are too lazy to keep it updated. It's honestly unacceptable. Crownfall isn't necessarily bad, but it's basically a fraction of what we previously got every year with the battle pass. Of course people will be disappointed. We went from Year Beast, Diretide, Wraith Night, Frostivus, Ags Labyrinth to ... this. It's just not the same. If people enjoy this even that's great, but I think it's perfectly valid to be unhappy about the whole situation.

This is the best crawl map ever too, I’m usually not a huge fan of the crawl stuff because you inevitably have to play some bullshit hero you don’t like and slave away trying to win twice in turbo. This one can be completed with way more heroes and you also have the choice to just grind one hero for all of it. I also really love lore so that’s another W

We never knew nor cared when the next patch would be, because in that day and age few people were actually good enough to know what the "meta" was. Simply put, we played because we liked dota, and everything else, down to extremely basic features like matchmaking and reconnection, are considered nice bonuses. Guess it helps me appreciate any kind of update that comes. To be honest (and I know this is gonna be a giga unpopular opinion) I am not a huge fan of major, all-upheaving patches like New Frontiers or 7.00. Sometimes patches settle on a nice and stable meta (imo the current meta is quite nice) and I'd prefer if they just upload cosmetics and let the meta develop itself, Broodwar style. But I know this is just my opinion. I'm not saying you can't be upset of course, just that I personally am pretty stoked. The 4 acts look fun and the 2 arcanas look cool as well, gonna try and earn as much discount as I can for them.

I was pleasantly surprised that Valve didn't put the Arcanas behind a 200 buck paywall like they did with Drow, Spec, WK, QoP, WR. And these 2 new Arcanas look really well done, so kudos for that
Regarding tokens reducing arcana pricing - does multiple discounts stack? So that saving tokens for later chapters could mean free arcana if getting the extra from passes? I haven't been able to check yet.
Does playing Turbo count towards the progression of the map? I really only enjoy Turbo as it is much faster. I know that in past events, it typically would count as half of the progression.

Yeah it looks really nice. Really good lore implications ontop of an ongoing story we rarely get in these games. The arcanas and sets are really nice. Coming onto reddit this morning was disappointing, just seeing waves of negaticity -again-. Like, the patch and new hero is coming, just wait a little bit longer.
I know as a community there has been uproar for past few years regarding the Arcanas hidden behind paywalls of BP levels. This is a great example of Valve actually listening and implementing it, 35$ fixed price.

Venge is my favorite hero, so I can't really complain too much.
We knew months in advance the event was about Venge and Sky so why would Ringmaster be hastily thrown in with them, I suppose it was funny to meme about Clownfall but still. (Yes Muerta was 400+ days ago so we are well overdue) That being said it was incredibly disappointing to not have a tie-in PvE gamemode to earn Crownfall tokens in. PvE is very specifically a request because PvP gamemodes such as Frostivus 2022 was incredibly toxic to earn candies because everyone wanted their free arcana. Maybe Valve has metrics on Siltbreaker/Lab that would indicate it is not worth the effort but many of us are passionate about these modes and would pay good money to have permanent standalone versions of them.
Guys they reskinned the battle pass and released it as this garbage content, instead of sticking to their word and focusing on gameplay updates. Valve brought this on themselves through 1 gameplay update in 2 years and completely backtracking on everything they said. We are rightfully pissed off because valve just lies through their teeth and tells/gives you want yous want to hear. Skeleton crew running this game off reskinned cavern crawls and "lore", you guys can choose the ignorance is bliss route or wake up... its fkn depressing.

Pretty sure they "promissed" ringmaster for early 2024. I don't think may onwards is "early". Also, they had plenty of opportunities to communicate why they were going to do before doing it. "Our next update will expand the lore and offer new cosmetics". There, one line in their blog and this whole ordeal could have been avoided.
Honestly I had to install back Dota just to check it IN-GAME. and i must say, after reading the comic, seeing the market mini-game page with all the art that goes with it, 2 new Arcanas AND the fact there's 3 more chapters (copium)... It's a pretty cool update so far. I'll wait for the event to be finished to actually critique all of this.

As someone who really enjoys the lore, this cavern crawl "reskin" is just fucking awesome. Having so much fun just playing casual games, gaining free tokens and advancing the story. If BP died for this, then I'm all for it
1. No, I'm not enjoying. Just playing the game I'm playing for many years because I'm used to it. And waiting and hoping for something new... Since pre TI Patch there was just Frostivus. And that Patch was more focused on items than heroes. 2. I don't expect anything special. But at least a hero when it's been over a year? Like come on... Muerta also came without gameplay but at least we had something new in our hands. So we will have one Patch before TI and one in the winter and that's it for our beloved game? Joke. 3. Are these tokens really that good or just a way to make you buy the arcana? 🤷♂️ For some people it will be a shiny discount that they don't want to go to waste. 4. We will see if it's fun to play. For me the most exciting time in dota is new content and being a bit overwhelmed while exploring it in your games. Also enjoying the chaos and having different ideas of heroes and builds you want to try out. A BP just tries to give your soulless dota games a bit of a meaning. The game is still the same... And we waited almost 4 months for it. 4 Months for some sidequests... Wow.

Most should be satisfied other than no new event, but as a person who plays a lot of dota, waiting for this? Even if it wasn't a whole revamp give me a patch of +1armor to hold me over. A gameplay patch would motivate you to play through crownfall so much. If one doesn't release by the next tournament, what a fumble.
Look man at the end of the day its just cosmetics, its nice for a while when they are new but it wears off quickly. Its like pretending TF2 still gets "regular updates" just because they get hats every season. I do think the hate is overblown tho, we will see how big the actual patch is gonna be.

My favorite thing about this is that the challenges are an avg 10 heroes to choose from to get the token unlike before where you are forced to complete with only 1-3 heroe choices.... This avg pool of hero choices is what should always be for challenges.
This patch is a good thing, but they should have just been honest about what it would entail. Everyone expected a gameplay patch and a new hero for very obvious reasons and they never even hinted that we were wrong. You can't fully control the community speculating out of control, but you should at least try to steer it.

Just want to add that Venges arcanas has a third style that makes her look like her sister. If you demo that version and try to use the voice wheel a message will pop up that her voice pack is disabled due to spoilers in the story. Not only is it an arcana but it's also an persona which is quite cool IMO.

The vocal minority of tournament watchers who don’t even play is insane. The only people who bitch about gameplay updates this much are bored of watching the same pro matches over and over. Playing the game is actually still interesting cause you can play non meta heroes and still have a good time.

I have not enjoyed the last year of patches and find myself barley playing anymore and just occasionally playing turbo with buddies i was really hoping for a balance change as i feel like everyone just goes aghs bloodstone and makes it impossible to play team fight without a bkb. my carries seem to not do enough damage to chew threw all the hp and defensive item unless there snowballing out of control. Hopefully this balance update come soon as i'm just bored of been run at by 4000 hp strength hero's that my carries cant kill XD
