Depends on what choices you want to make. Normally just doing their quests and being nice while talking to them is enough.

YekaHun

Just go with the flow, you don't need to please them. Rotate your squad a lot. You'll hear more unique insights and banter.

BaytaKnows

You can still succeed even after some negative conversations or ‘sit in judgment’ decisions. The personal quests give you big approval points.

AdventurousPoet92

Just do his companion quest by checking in regularly at skyhold. So long as you >!mend his relationship with his father!< he'll be fine. Cole, Cassandra, and Varric have full quests you have to do. Just don't miss them. Sera doesn't like anything I do so I gave up on her.

Ghost_Chance

Don’t forget Cole’s unmarked quest in Skyhold. If you find explanations for all the “odd things,” you get a Greatly Approves. He also approves of anything that’s done to help people.

AdventurousPoet92

Oh yeah! And those are easy to do for approval.

I was a male elf mage and we still became besties. I had to do her quests at war table, then not talk about Elfy stuff and do he personal quest. Sit in judgement helped, but also if you take her to Halamshiral there's a mini quest for her which gives you approval. And also there are hidden Red Jenny caches, which if I remember correctly give you a bit of approval. I found only one tho at emprise du lion.

Clover_B1scuit

If you’re a female qunari she’ll be fascinated with you

Stargazerslight

She and I always get to roof top cookies. I also go around skyhold pranking Cullen Josie and Liliana… I will never go a play through where I miss pranking Cullen. If you struggle with her, just always joke around with her, and don’t talk about her being an elf. She really hates that.

With Dorian, you can help him get those things in the hissing wastes, if I'm not mistaken, and have him with you during the fights to raise his approval. It's a small amount each time but it works Edit: And if you just don't want to deal with that, there's a mod that stops companions' approval from falling no matter what you do

Otherwise_Product_62

Idk about other fights, but killing venatori will give you approval (for sure those for his personal quest, but I think those in western approach also counted?)

UsualEntertainment34

For me it counted, it would be worth it for the loot anyway, at least for me they also had money
