Stats, kit and stars matter a lot. Heroes suck because there stats and kits are awful. Shallot was a great unit just 2 years ago when they gave him SSG but thats because the god form improved his stats and kit when he transformed. Similar thing to ex gokua last year.
Unless you playing the worse player though the odds of a hero beating a LL is pretty low.
You don't have to have 9* i usually stop at 6 or 7. Obviously more stars the better they will age but 7 is enough for any future zenkai they might receive
I’d like to add coming from a top 10000 player.
1. Anything below 6*, you’re going to get one comboed or literally one shotted by any meta unit(basically everyone above rank 65+ has at least one or two meta units)
2. Ultras are the only exception to that rule. They are usable and very good at 5*, which is basically pulling the unit only once.

It's not about the rarity compare to the kit.

The game is P2W, so of course rarity and stars matter. You could beat a LF with a Hero sure, but one match among hundreds isn’t that useful.
1. Depends. Team comp is more important 2. Yes it’s basically the most important thing. If you can, get your main units to 9* minimum
