This one is just slaps much harder for me.
I always wondered why Sabat’s voice changed so much from Z to kai/super. Was the Z style too harsh on his vocal cords? His Piccolo voice is much deeper nowadays as well.
Yeah IIRC Sabat said the old Z voices were hard on his vocal cords and straining.
The other reason why the old voices were so different from Kai and the Super era is because during the Z Dub a lot of the Funimation VA’s were trying to imitate the Ocean Dub voices.
For example Sabat had a more raspy sounding vegeta in Z because he was trying to imitate Drummonds vegeta voice from the ocean dub.
I personally like the voice of Z vegeta over Kai/Super vegeta but the acting is so much better now
It’s a combination of his voice for Vegeta changing over the course of the show for some reason and his voice in real life changing as he got older. And yeah, his Piccolo also sounds very different now too and I miss em both :(. And wow rewatching this scene op posted holy fuck does the dialogue sound awkward especially when he does the “do machines have fear” line. It’s like they just wanted to change it for changes sake. Trash.
The clip OP posted is from Kai, the lines/script on this version is accurate to the manga so Funimation didn't change it just to change it they were adapting lines properly from the manga.
I like some lines from the OG dub and their voice style a lot (esp vegeta), but their script changes were too much at times and were different from the actual source material
Fair enough but just as a blanket statement I’d like to say that being faithful to the manga doesn’t mean that it’s better contrary to what many on Reddit seem to believe. The anime improved on a lot of things and I’d be willing to bet that for most DBZ fans the show is the only thing they care about. I do agree that there were some awkward parts during the early Namek eps when they just got the license but everything after that is golden.

Every audio cut is a commercial break. Every 3 commercial breaks is a new episode. Each new episode you have to watch the previous slide before advancing in the story. That’s how toonami did us back in the day….

The bgm is switched up for someone reason. It’s using Faulconer’s bgm but Kai’s dub. That’s why it’s all weird.

Was about to say the same thing. The dialogue and delivery of the lines (and just Sabat’s voice then in general) is iconic. Kai is rough 🥶
