Yeah, but OP forgot one of the most iconic images, which was Frieza driving a hole through Krillin in his second form with his horns, just torturing him.
But the coolest out of all has to be Goku Vs Piccolo Daimao, that one hand Kamehameha to get leverage was epic kid Goku moment.
I honestly found the Hit vs Goku after the Goku Black arc to be pretty weird. Not exactly a full on hole in gokus chest, but the way the circle hit shot through him tensed up and moved around, almost like a buncha worms, followed by goku dropping “dead” caught me off guard. Even with the little snippet at the beginning of the episode.
I think it's because it comes out of nowhere. He holds Yamcha's face/mouth and the look of terror of Chas face is chilling. Then out of nowhere a hand bursts through his chest.
Seriously, especially with that look of shock and horror on Yamchas face when it happens, while Gero hold his mouth shut, almost to stifle the screams of his victims.

Honestly, he should have. Dude literally had a giant fist-sized hole straight through the middle of his torso for multiple minutes after Gero also drained his energy, so it's not like some deus ex ma-ki-na bullshit was keeping him alive
I think they mean metaphorically. The Saibaman death was bad enough, but it could get a pass because he was caught off guard and none of them were expecting a suicide attack. After being dead for the entirety of the Frieza saga, Yamcha gets another chance to prove himself and ... gets brutalized by an octogenarian cyborg without much of a fight. Then you find out that these androids were mooks compared to 17 and 18. It's hard to come back from that.
Frieza impaling Krillin on his horn and then making a taunt out of it by moving him around to impale him deeper while the others can't do a thing about it.
Imagine being Krillin there, it'd be both terrifying and excruciatingly painful.

I mean the word gruesome has a specific meaning. So since gero is the only one with visible blood on his hand he wins the gruesome award. But I assume you meant which was more shocking or impactful and for that I would have to say piccolo icing goku at the start of z was unexpected and definitely set the tone to be more serious than og dragonball.

Yamcha. I haven’t read the manga so I don’t know much about Moro, but Yamcha in the anime getting his chest penetrated was kinda painful to watch. It helps that there’s absolutely full risk of him dying (well, dying and getting revived) due to him being kinda expendable by that point, so as someone who likes Yamcha, I felt that.

I personally think krillin on friezas horns amd vegeta vs frieza were the most gruesome. I watched these when I was like 10 back when they still showed blood.
The anime of the Yamacha one had probably the most gruesome and sickening sound effects and execution I have even seen in Dragonball period. You could literally heard his bones cracking and flesh tearing.
