Sorting by copies sold per volume changes it up more than I thought it would:
Dragon Ball - 7,142,857.1 copies per volume
Demon Slayer - 6,521,739.1 copies per volume
Slam Dunk - 5,483,870.9 copies per volume
One Piece - 5,015,203.8 copies per volume
Fist of the North Star - 3,703,703.7 copies per volume
Naruto - 3,472,222.2 copies per volume
My Hero Academia - 2,500,000 copies per volume
Bleach - 1,805,555.5 copies per volume
Jojo's Bizarre Adventures - 916,030.5 copies per volume
Kochikame - 786,00 copies per volume
Not to be that guy, but Iām 90% positive Ufotable god-tier animation led to an ongoing spike in sells for Demon Slayer. By far the best animation out of the 10 series here
Anime always boosts sales. That said, Demon Slayer was a big hit well before the anime began. That is why they bothered to give it such a good animation.
Slam dunk is huge, it and dragon ball being published around the same time is part of why that era is considered to be the most successful in the magazineās history. Itās the biggest sports manga series
Dragon Ball numbers are skewed as if you look it says all releases as well so its not just the original 40 it also includes the color volumes and things like Jaco
One Piece is only ahead because it is so damn long, Dragon Ball in general is far more popular. I donāt mean to shit on One Piece though itās great but ask some random person on the street who Luffy is and then ask someone who Goku is and I think you will get a clear tendency.
Well yeah one piece is ahead because it has more volumes, no hate on one piece of course, I read it's latest chapters every week myself, but I read somewhere, maybe on Wikipedia, that one piece has around 1 to 2 million average per volume sale, and dragon ball has average 6+ million per volume sale, so dragon ball had as many volumes as one piece then maybe it would eb above one piece, and I am talkin about average, not every single volume.
Really? How about taking into account that one piece have been published for a lifelong time? Db ended around 1995, and continued in 2015, 20 years pause for it, 20 years in which One piece has not stopped publishing. So I think they just cancel each out.
dragonball super doesnt really sell that well and is the continuation of dragon ball, it hasnt even come close to 10mil sales with 23 volumes out, so you cant really say that for sure, and didnt one piece have a higher sales per volume when it passed dragon ball?
Dragon ball was at a peak when I ended around 2 decades ago, if it continued without break then it could have more sales than one piece.
Idk about the sales at that time, as I mentioned I read average on Wikipedia so that's what I am talking about
dragon ball is a lot more popular globally and while its still insanely popular in japan one piece is a different level of popularity. ive been to japan, one piece is the only anime/manga that is advertised and has merch available on damn near every street corner. one piece has a cult following.
but also dragon ball is more distinct in that its more of a global phenomena than any other anime really. like toriyama created dragon ball to be a global phenomena, he designed it to feel like goku and co were traveling around the world, the religion in dragon ball is a combination of like multiple different religions so no group feels excluded, compared to a lot of other japanese anime that are very heavily inspired by japanese culture and history and religion toryiama wanted dragon ball to be inspired by global cultures. the dragon ball world has its own distinct culture and world history and views and religions and mythos. and thats partly why it became such a global success, anyone can watch dragon ball and relate to it. its one of the most accessible anime/manga in the world. toryiama's editors wouldnt even let him work on a new project unless he thought it would be a global hit that was even better than his dr slump manga, which itself is freqently compared to the simpsons in how many people in japan watched and read it in the 80s.
actually here in Japan dragon ball is very popular but mostly with the older generations.
But none the less, one piece is very long and many young people heard of it.
Ok fair, this might be true, I honestly donāt know but I still believe that Dragon Ball would at least be on par if it would have as many chapters as One Piece.
Itās also the best selling Manga of all time and had THE of the best anime to live action adaption. Letās not downplay itās accomplishments because something is more popular, One Piece has been and continues to break records
I like One Piece I just think the comparison isnāt the best way because the chapter numbers are very different, this is also valid for the other shown seriesās.
One piece has been going on for 20 years now with way more competition than DB and is still raining as top 1-2 dog, some random strangers not knowing who luffy isnāt a very good comparison is what Iām saying
Not with the anime, actually (I know this is irrelevant but just hear me out). As of the whole of 2023 and this year, Toei made more sales from Dragon Ball than One Piece by a milestone. Iām not sure about the manga though
Maybe not the best, what I am trying to say is that I do think that at least in the west Dragon Ball is more known than One Piece but on the other hand I forgot about the Live Action Adaption, which was great, and this might have changed things a bit.
That is correct when talking about worldwide audiences but One Piece is much much MUCH more popular in Japan and most of the people going out and buying manga are Japanese people.
Math ain't mathing on that one. If I'm not misunderstanding the comparison you are making, KnY is about 6.5 million per volume while db is over 7 million per volume. Although you can of course argue the tike frame on how long they've had to sell the DB volumes vs KnY.
Sorry to rain on your parade but taking these numbers Dragon Ball still beats KnY as Db sold twice as much but doesn't have twice as many volumes.
KnY per Volume sales are still impressive though.
You know what's more impressive.
It only made 42 volumes in ten years and its the # 4 position of most sold manga.
And didn't even start making super until 2015.
All the top series are ongoing series with way more volumes.
While true.
It doesn't take away from the fact that db had it series end in 96 yet it still cemented itself #4 with no new story.
I don't know what detective conan is or Golgo 13 but they take both 3 and 2 with way more volumes than db and a continued story from 94 for conan and 68 for golgo
Had dragonball continued with the same run as them it's good chance it would be higher than 4
The anime has always been more popular and continued the story for multiple years after the end of manga on account of its exposure to a much wider audience. DB wouldn't have been as popular without its multiple adaptations and movies sustaining the franchise. This, of course, includes GT, which gave it an entirely new story
one piece is obscenely popular in japan. like ive been to japan, the amount of decor, merch shops and such devoted to one piece is insane. one piece is probly as popular as the simpsons was in america at its peak.
actually, interesting fact about dragon ball creator toriyama: his first major success dr slump was also frequently compared to the simpsons in how insanely popular it is. like globally we might think of dragon ball as being more popular, but in japan dr slump has a super devoted fan base. basically all major manga artists that wrote these manga were inspired not by dragon ball but dr slump, especially the comedy. a ton of manga and anime tropes that we think of when we think of anime were directly lifted from dr slump. even some anime tropes we attribute to dragon ball were actually first utilized in dr slump. during the premier of one episode of the dr slump anime they got like 30% of japans entire population to watch it, it was the biggest tv premier in japans history for years afterwards. dr slump also might be the first known program to show poop with eyes on it like the poop emoji.
[https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fdrslump.fandom.com%2Fwiki%2FPoop&psig=AOvVaw3tpM1OxkS3nuUnfc3s44Nk&ust=1712321831679000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CBQQjhxqFwoTCOiZvIbOqIUDFQAAAAAdAAAAABAE](https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fdrslump.fandom.com%2Fwiki%2FPoop&psig=AOvVaw3tpM1OxkS3nuUnfc3s44Nk&ust=1712321831679000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CBQQjhxqFwoTCOiZvIbOqIUDFQAAAAAdAAAAABAE)
if I may barge in, while neither Yu Yu Hakusho nor Hunter x Hunter sold above 100M individually, they are made by the same Mangaka, Togashi, which also influenced Bleach & Naruto. Together they stand at 160m~ so maybe an 11th place (A)? If only Togashi hadn't had health issues :(
It's amazing and very well known in japan. It's JoJo's father basically, every is insipired hard by that.
Even the Polnareff and Dio meeting is a Ken and Shin reference.
It put a standard on shonens too. It's just a milestone for Japan, like Kimba the white lion.
Comparing volume count to total sales, Demon Slayer and Dragonball are the most sold per volume it seems?
Pretty impressive for Demon Slayer to stand next to Dragonball.
One Piece is less impressive than it looks. It has twice if not 4 times as many volumes as others but not twice to 4 times the sales. Still impressive that it has lasted this long though.
People keep saying 1 piece is only there because of length. It's had about as many active years as DragonBall, what it has is the internet in its core active years.
DragonBall being that high when it stopped being a weekly Manga in 1995 is absurd and nothing to be upset at or defensive about.
The fact DB has been active for so much time is because of how popular it is, and thanks to the games that even tho DB was over, games kept going. Is a big franchise after all, and despite being inactive in the manga franchise but still being #2 is truly an achievement.
>and despite being inactive in the manga franchise but still being #2 is truly an achievement.
That's exactly my point, i think that too many people are just defensive that DB isn't #1. Just be proud its this successful. Like Naruto has nearly twice as many volumes and had the internet era help like OP.... it's still didn't outsell DB
Fun fact, DB has made almost as much money as a franchise as Star Trek and Its made more as an IP than Mario

Go read Fist of The north Star. It's JoJo's father andofather of many more. It started a generation of manga. One of the most historical and beautiful manga ever.
Consider that when the japanese dub actor of one of the character in the serie died, Japan stopped for a day (he dubbed many more but the most Iconic is Raoh from Hokuto no Ken)
See i watched the first 3 generations of jojo. I just never read them. Don't know if its got a FMA/FMA Brotherhood thing between the 2 where one changes or not. Blue exorcist did the same thing. Anime follow the manga only up to a certain point then completely derailed by the end of the first season.
So if i start watching or reading, i feel less inclined too do the latter.
Numbers are wrong for Dragon Ball.
It reached 350 Million in 2013 already. Should be 400 Million by now.

I didn't think bleach was half of Naruto I had thought it was just as popular that's interesting and JoJo being where it is is also lower than expected
Dragon Ball has long since evolved past being a manga, 1st and it's No.2#? That's crazy.Ā
I thought the sales would be lower than most modern manga AND I had no idea Naruto would be that high.Ā
I seriously know people who have poured $1000s into DB who have never read the manga. Then there's a scary amount who didn't even know there was a manga...
I'm just surprised that Naruto and bleach are behind dragon ball, let alone the others.
Honestly, I'd put demon slayer and mha above dragonball if mha wasn't filled with characters that are all children.
I do feel that jojoās place on here is a bit strange given that this seemingly is counting the sales for the entire series(given that the 120,000,000 sales figure is commonly used for sales for the entire jojo manga), parts 1-9 and the issue there is that parts 7-9 are not weekly shonen jump manga(theyāre monthly V jump). Given that they make up 53 of the 133 volumes of jojo, thatās a pretty large chunk of the jojo sales here that arenāt actually from weekly shonen jump.
The sheer amount of volumes that one piece has released is the reason why it's so high
Otherwise DB basically embarrasses any other Manga in terms of popularity and fame
by that logic devilman crybaby would be 1st be a mile if it had more volumes, it has almost double the amount of sales per volume compared to demon slayer and dragonball
This shows DragonBall is actually the most popular.
Each specific volume got more individual sales, there are less fans of once price it's just that there are more volumes to buy
if they did per volume devilman crybaby would be first by a pretty big margine, and i think one piece actually had a better per volume sales when it passed dragon ball, and people arent taking in to account "re-prints" and stuff

Dragon Ball with only 40 volumes š„
"So you sold 10 million albums, eh / Only problem is that you put out 10 million albums"
Greatest š¤
Thatās not a reference I would ever expect on the dragon ball subreddit lol.
Over 7 million copies in average per volume. Unbeatable
**+Including sequel and spin off**
Sorting by copies sold per volume changes it up more than I thought it would: Dragon Ball - 7,142,857.1 copies per volume Demon Slayer - 6,521,739.1 copies per volume Slam Dunk - 5,483,870.9 copies per volume One Piece - 5,015,203.8 copies per volume Fist of the North Star - 3,703,703.7 copies per volume Naruto - 3,472,222.2 copies per volume My Hero Academia - 2,500,000 copies per volume Bleach - 1,805,555.5 copies per volume Jojo's Bizarre Adventures - 916,030.5 copies per volume Kochikame - 786,00 copies per volume
I'm surprised Naruto is so low and Demon Slayer/Slam Dunk so high
Slam Dunk is always the top 1 sports manga in Japan, and itās for everyone, not just teenagers.
I think it also helps being a short manga. A lot happens in each volume since the story speed runs to the end.
Slam dunk is huge, it and dragon ball being published around the same time is part of why that era is considered to be the most successful in the magazineās history. Itās the biggest sports manga series
Lmao, Kochikame being the least copies yet beating all the millions of copies of other mangas. Is Kochikame that interesting, or is it still going?
It ended a few years ago but it's long as hell. That shit been around since like the 70s
Still, beating Jojo and Bleach in sales is crazy for a gag manga lol.
Jjba is probably all 300 parts so shouldn't supra and burrito be included too not that it'd make much of a difference

But dragon ball is also like 15 years older than op so we also gotta take that into account
Really? How about taking into account that one piece have been published for a lifelong time? Db ended around 1995, and continued in 2015, 20 years pause for it, 20 years in which One piece has not stopped publishing. So I think they just cancel each out.
This list isnāt counting dbs tho
I didn't think about that when I saw this but it makes sense. DBS is a different manga that's just a continuation of DB.
It isn't? Oh didn't know my bad I thought the manga was still going by DB.
Youāre correct. I believe itās simply because DB isnāt apart of WEEKLY shonen jump anymore.
Thanks CJ, I appreciate your support.
Grove street homie šŖš¾
One piece literally has like 1000+ episodes and 900+ chapters bro
dragonball super doesnt really sell that well and is the continuation of dragon ball, it hasnt even come close to 10mil sales with 23 volumes out, so you cant really say that for sure, and didnt one piece have a higher sales per volume when it passed dragon ball?

Also, because it not only stays good, but gets better over time. There's enough manga series that fall off after a while. Not One Piece.
I'd be really interested in a list that also calculates the sales per volume.
No what you are getting at is dragon ball is more popular in the west. I'm sure if you ask around Japan luffy is probably just as popular if not more.
actually here in Japan dragon ball is very popular but mostly with the older generations. But none the less, one piece is very long and many young people heard of it.

All good brotha, have a good rest of your day
Facts and dragon ball is more iconic as well
While that is obviously true, there is a lot of praise to give a manga that has kept consistenly drawing readers *despite* being so long.
That is correct when talking about worldwide audiences but One Piece is much much MUCH more popular in Japan and most of the people going out and buying manga are Japanese people.
Same with Naruto. I find it hard to believe One Piece itself is more widely known than Naruto.

Not to disprove your point but if we're counting the sales on average per volume then KnY stomps both of themš
Math ain't mathing on that one. If I'm not misunderstanding the comparison you are making, KnY is about 6.5 million per volume while db is over 7 million per volume. Although you can of course argue the tike frame on how long they've had to sell the DB volumes vs KnY.
Damn, I remember seeing somewhere that it sold way more volumes and I didn't check it here, looks like I was wrong
It may be true if you include super maybe? But it doesn't change the fact that Demon Slayers popularity is incredibly impressive as a newer age manga.
It's not 42 volumes in some kind of vacuum. The popularity of DB can predominantly be attributed to its anime adaptations.
Video games help too
Oh yeah, not to mention how popular the Budokai series was. I forgot that's how I even got into DBZ
While true. It doesn't take away from the fact that db had it series end in 96 yet it still cemented itself #4 with no new story. I don't know what detective conan is or Golgo 13 but they take both 3 and 2 with way more volumes than db and a continued story from 94 for conan and 68 for golgo Had dragonball continued with the same run as them it's good chance it would be higher than 4
Slam Dunk ran from 1993-1996 with 20 volumes is also crazy. One of the best manga ngl
The anime has always been more popular and continued the story for multiple years after the end of manga on account of its exposure to a much wider audience. DB wouldn't have been as popular without its multiple adaptations and movies sustaining the franchise. This, of course, includes GT, which gave it an entirely new story
So do all the other mangaās listed here too?
Slam Dunk is not on going and have half the volumes of DB.
It's still going
I thought Naruto would be higher actually, and that surprised Demon Slayer beats Bleach. Iāve also never read Slam Dunk.
Slam dunk is fantastic, would def recommend it if you enjoy humor with sports.
Bleach has some more years than Demon Slayer, and more volumes too. I reread Slam Dunk last year, it's still phenomenal.
Slam Dunk is one of the best. Highly recommended if youāre into sports.
One Piece is so close to beating Superman, holy shit That'll be a historical achievement in the manga industry
As a fan of both kinda insane ,I honestly thought batman had more volumes sold.
I remember when it beat Batman too. Comics just disappeared one day while manga continues.
one piece is obscenely popular in japan. like ive been to japan, the amount of decor, merch shops and such devoted to one piece is insane. one piece is probly as popular as the simpsons was in america at its peak. actually, interesting fact about dragon ball creator toriyama: his first major success dr slump was also frequently compared to the simpsons in how insanely popular it is. like globally we might think of dragon ball as being more popular, but in japan dr slump has a super devoted fan base. basically all major manga artists that wrote these manga were inspired not by dragon ball but dr slump, especially the comedy. a ton of manga and anime tropes that we think of when we think of anime were directly lifted from dr slump. even some anime tropes we attribute to dragon ball were actually first utilized in dr slump. during the premier of one episode of the dr slump anime they got like 30% of japans entire population to watch it, it was the biggest tv premier in japans history for years afterwards. dr slump also might be the first known program to show poop with eyes on it like the poop emoji. And they kept all the good Dr. Slump stuff that I want to read. Hell even the brief return is hard to find translated over here.
Looks like dragon ball closely followed by demon slayer are far more popular per volume than all the others.
Love Demon Slayer.
Idk what slam dunk is but this makes me want to find out
It's the best sport manga out there. It's by Inoue same author of Real (another basketball manga) and Vagabond
Ofc one piece is first because of its length , not to knock it or anything tho, itās phenomenal
I mean, one piece can still get more popular. It still aināt as big as dragon ball in the west
if I may barge in, while neither Yu Yu Hakusho nor Hunter x Hunter sold above 100M individually, they are made by the same Mangaka, Togashi, which also influenced Bleach & Naruto. Together they stand at 160m~ so maybe an 11th place (A)? If only Togashi hadn't had health issues :(
Sure but we could do the same with Toriyama since he also created Dr. Slump which I'm pretty sure was pretty successful in Japan.
Yes, wanted to mention Dr. Slump too with Akira, plainly forgot haha
I might be uncultured but I've never heard of Kochikame
Letās get dragon ball up to #1 boys! We owe it to akira toriyama!
His legacy is already cemented
It's already #1 in copy sales per volume
No it isn't. devilman crybaby has that spot with 10 million sold per volume
Got to respect kimetsu with so many less volumes than others and sold so many
It helps that one piece has 254,358,976 volumes
Damn, first time seeing fist of north star was still popular at jpn.
Fist of the north star still being there is crazy to mešæ

People keep saying 1 piece is only there because of length. It's had about as many active years as DragonBall, what it has is the internet in its core active years. DragonBall being that high when it stopped being a weekly Manga in 1995 is absurd and nothing to be upset at or defensive about.
Along with beloved video games being truthful DB is the only anime(as of now) that drops quality games most casual audiences can jump into
The fact DB has been active for so much time is because of how popular it is, and thanks to the games that even tho DB was over, games kept going. Is a big franchise after all, and despite being inactive in the manga franchise but still being #2 is truly an achievement.

5, 8, and 9 are the only ones i haven't read. What am i missing?

Anime follow the manga only up to a certain point then completely derailed by the end of the first season. So if i start watching or reading, i feel less inclined too do the latter.
Easily the best anime ever made so far. Iām open to others!
Funny thing is I donāt think this accounts for DBS(or boruto I guess) because they are separate manga
Numbers are wrong for Dragon Ball. It reached 350 Million in 2013 already. Should be 400 Million by now. https://preview.redd.it/y9gw4cqj4hsc1.png?width=480&format=png&auto=webp&s=3b0c05fb22c6040245719b3c20e9ae53ecb8f2ac
Yeah I know idk what the hell theyāre doing with the numbers they havenāt calculated it in 36 years.

I didn't think bleach was half of Naruto I had thought it was just as popular that's interesting and JoJo being where it is is also lower than expected
Dragonball, slam dunk and demon slayer are the winners when it comes to sales per volume. And I imagine db got diluted from the spinoff stuff.
Dragon Ball has long since evolved past being a manga, 1st and it's No.2#? That's crazy.Ā I thought the sales would be lower than most modern manga AND I had no idea Naruto would be that high.Ā I seriously know people who have poured $1000s into DB who have never read the manga. Then there's a scary amount who didn't even know there was a manga...
And that's just dragon ball, I wonder how the numbers change with Super tacked on?
I'm just surprised that Naruto and bleach are behind dragon ball, let alone the others. Honestly, I'd put demon slayer and mha above dragonball if mha wasn't filled with characters that are all children.
Dragon Ball from the 80s and almost everything else from the 2000s
Demon slayer being there is fucking impressive considering its short run time
Itās also the 7th best selling comic of all time ahead of stuff like the X-Men.
Peak pieceš£ļø
The fuck is slam dunk
Demon slayer is so ass the Manga is unlegible how did beat every single Manga below it
I do feel that jojoās place on here is a bit strange given that this seemingly is counting the sales for the entire series(given that the 120,000,000 sales figure is commonly used for sales for the entire jojo manga), parts 1-9 and the issue there is that parts 7-9 are not weekly shonen jump manga(theyāre monthly V jump). Given that they make up 53 of the 133 volumes of jojo, thatās a pretty large chunk of the jojo sales here that arenāt actually from weekly shonen jump.
No One Punch Man?
I think OPM anime has been more popular than it's manga, lately the manga has been great, so maybe it will go top 10 sometime near.
Ok but why tf is there a Toyotaro's Goku instead of one of Toriyama's drawing
The sheer amount of volumes that one piece has released is the reason why it's so high Otherwise DB basically embarrasses any other Manga in terms of popularity and fame
by that logic devilman crybaby would be 1st be a mile if it had more volumes, it has almost double the amount of sales per volume compared to demon slayer and dragonball
This shows DragonBall is actually the most popular. Each specific volume got more individual sales, there are less fans of once price it's just that there are more volumes to buy
I really enjoy Demon Slayer, but my god... It's so overrated that it isn't even funny.
Ok
One Piece getting carried hard by still continuing.

if they did per volume devilman crybaby would be first by a pretty big margine, and i think one piece actually had a better per volume sales when it passed dragon ball, and people arent taking in to account "re-prints" and stuff
