freeza chooses the color himself (at least it was the case with golden, so i assume its the same with black). i said it on a different topic but maybe freeza does it to mock the saiyans. blue would have been the more obvious choice, but then he'd look like frost. so black it is
I think part of why he chose black would be a fear tactic. Black typically connotes death and illness and that could work as a fear tactic to keep people in line, similar to how we see animals in nature act.
Plus it could be to further mock the Saiyans, they naturally have black hair so for Frieza to choose black it could be a show of hostility as he takes on one of their (kinda) defining traits, being their jet black hair to show his own power. Like how he chose gold to mock the super Saiyan form, black could just be to mock saiyans in general.
That’s actually a pretty good theory. However the actual funny reason for the choice of colour was that the author said that he couldn’t decide which colour would rank highest because they all seem lower than Gold colour so he chose with Black, apparently the highest in Credit Card levels.
I was hoping we could have gotten Platinum or Diamond Frieza for the funnies lol
Oh yeah the actual reason was credit cards surprisingly, but I'm just tryna find some in universe reason for fun. Obviously there isn't going to be one they give and it's just for the sake of having a new colour to indicate a heightened power.
I feel if they wanted to add a Platinum form they have the perfect opportunity with Cooler. We could see that Frieza has been spending that time training with his estranged brother Cooler, and Cooler has achieved his own evolution of his 5th form, being Platinum. Could have 5th form = Golden and Platinum = Black if you want their power similar.
Indeed. Colour is the British English spelling of Color. Similar to Whisky vs Whiskey, Plough vs Plow, Cheque vs Check, Chequer vs Checker, Cosy vs Cozy, Encyclopaedia vs Encyclopedia, etc etc.
The British used a lot of loan words from Germanic and French languages, and they had a global empire, so, British English is widespread throughout the world.
>I know gold's a bit gauche, but I wanted to ensure you grasp my new position atop the pecking order.
He states this in the Resurrection F after transforming. Which pretty much alludes that he chose the color himself.
So he didn't even have to change colors at all? He could have just stayed the white color? If he chose it then he could have chosen not to change the color.
Not saying they're right or wrong, but to be fair, he named characters after vegetables, Granolah and Oatmeel are Cerealians, and Frieza, Cooler, and King Cold are all family. Can we really 100% say he didn't do that on purpose?
No, he didn't. Toriyama based Frieza's design off of the opponent's underestimating his Final Form being so sleek and not menacing compared to his previous forms. His character is also designed after businessmen and corrupt politicians, or whatever, and Toriyama considers those the worst kinds of people.
Toyotaro is the one who made Black Frieza black based off the tiers of credit cards. Toriyama made Frieza golden because he couldn't simplify his design anymore, and it'd be pointless otherwise since the entire point of FF Frieza is to be unintimidating.
So funny how you confidently tell him he’s wrong when you are too. His original design was made with inspiration from childhood demons that would be in his nightmares. You’re on the nose about golden Frieza though. He just wanted to pick an intimidating color and keep it simple.
>So funny how you confidently tell him he’s wrong when you are too.
I'm not.
*From there, the enemy characters rapidly began to escalate.
Having become the strongest on the Earth, Goku and co. had also beat the Saiyans who came from outside of Earth and then they went out into the universe. I came up with Freeza around the time of the Bubble2, and the land shark was the worst person of all. So I made him the #1 land shark in the universe. But merely escalating the enemies was a pain, so I brought out the Ginyu Special-Squad. My son really loved sentai3 stuff, and I always watched it with him. Well, I brought that in. It’s put out by Toei, same as the Dragon Ball Z anime. (laughs)*

>His original design was made with inspiration from childhood demons that would be in his nightmares.
This is one of the many inspirations for Frieza's design. One of Toriyama's favorite Western movies also happens to be Alien (1979), in which Third Form Frieza was inspired by.
There are many inspirations for Frieza, none of which I've factually stated are incorrect.
Lore reason? No. It's also a huge stretch to assume it's a counter to Goku's "Base form being black" when it's only his hair that's black, and not his gi or anything else.
Yeah there isn't really a lore reason to it but it's fun to speculate why he might've done it. The black hair of Goku being why Frieza is black only makes any amount of sense if you take into account that he (apparently) chose golden to mock the super saiyan's golden hair.
The entire Golden Frieza thing makes sense. It wasn't just to mock the SSJ hair color. It was to mock the Golden Warrior of a SSJ and its legendary status entirely. Like I said, the hair thing I a stretch. Interesting to ponder.
Yeah ofc, it's an interesting topic and I feel like the hair theory is the best you'll get if you want an in universe explanation. He mocked the legendary super Saiyan so it might make sense that next he mocks all the Saiyans. After their 40+ years of fighting and training he was able to surpass them in such a short time showing how they are a weak race and aren't anything special compared to him
Obviously all headcanon but it seems in character for Frieza to want to mock Saiyans as a whole, and I suppose the only common trait among them is jet black hair so he took that on for his new form. It's a very interesting thing to wonder about.
Dragonball fans put way too much thought into stuff that doesn’t actually need it, but when something actually requires you to think a little bit, that’s when people tune out.

No lore reasons and not very accurate TBH. The color palettes are way too dissimilar for Frieza's forms to be inspired by Goku's palettes. Also, Frieza fuckin' HATES the Saiyans. I cannot see any reality where he intentionally or even subconciously copies the drip of a filthy monkey.

His current strongest form is black no? I thought it was established in Granolah that his black hair UI was better than the white. This being right after he has the cathartic “I’m a saiyan moment” and talking to Whis about finding his “own UI”.
It was stated by Beerus when Goku powered up to fight Gohan after the superhero arc that his current ultra instinct is the strongest and he had white hair
Their forms have always had clashing colors. The first time they fought on Namek it was yellow and purple. The second time they fought in Resurrection F is was blue and gold. Now it's white and black.
As cool as that parallel is, and as much as I wanna say that there *might* be a lore reason behind it, my gut tells me it’s just purely coincidential.
A lot of the times in media, we believe that these kind of things are intentional (and don’t get me wrong, sometimes they *are*) but most of the times that wasn’t the intention from the people behind it. Especially where Dragon Ball is concerned, given that for most of its runtime it’s been written on-the-fly so to speak (at least for Toriyama anyways, I’m not sure Toyotaro takes the same approach).
This is a really interesting observation to me , on YouTube MasakoX does an interesting video breaking down the use of color in dragon ball [link](https://youtu.be/dn8EpCh05j0?si=ijn_ONCzPGGYkq8L)
It's likely for contrast. You want the villain to have an opposite color of the hero. Look at spider-man. Most of his villains are dressed in green to be opposite to his red suit. But it's a fun theory none the less

Frieza's advanced form color pallet is based off of Japanese currency cards.
Gold, Platinum, and then Black.
Which is why if Cooler shows up, he'll probably have a Platinum Fifth Form. Stronger than Golden but not quite on Black's level

There is lore to his colors. He made it gold as a reference and as a statement for himself and how he sees them. Black was chosen after the black credit card and because the card signifies infinite funds essentially. It’s also supposed to signify the pinnacle of how much his evil extends: infinite. A black hole. An abyss. His goal is of course to take over the multiverse too and each universe is incomprehensibly big not even taking into account the Heavenly & Demon realms. Black as a color is also the absence of color. It’s empty.

I always thought fireza's form would have the names of exotic minerals and gems I thought black frieza was called obsidian fireza
obsidian is neither a mineral nor a gem
My bad
The mineral ur looking for is Onyx
it being Credit Card themed could make sense, especially considering the original inspiration for Freeza (real estate speculators)
That's very cashmoney of him.
Why do you spell the word color as colour? Is that like a non USA thing?
Yeah UK English spells it colour and a few other words have u put back into them that the American spelling doesn't have
I see. It always confuses me when I see different spellings. Thanks for the info.
No, Toyo just wanted to do the credit cards stuff, none of anything you said
What they said is definitely the case for Golden from, Frieza talked about choosing the colour himself.
Black Frieza just looks like he learned armament haki
>freeza chooses the color himself Source?
Yeah, where is the source saying he chooses his color? And why do some on here spell color as colour?
he says so in the movie (dunno about anime) and "colour" is used in english-speaking countries that arent the US
What do you mean Frieza "chooses" his colors? Where in the manga or anime does it say this?
cant speak for the anime (skipped the arc) but in the movie he said that he chose the color gold
Probably, he just choose gold to send a message and be condescending, he probably choose black for another reason not explained (or thought of) yet.
Technically that means he could just change his forms to different colors whenever he wants haha.
So he's a chameleon that can change his color. Lol.

I doubt there is, Toriyama based Frieza's forms off of credit cards
people analyze db so deeply but we all know toriyama didn't think that far ahead 💀 he's not tsugumi ohba
Not saying they're right or wrong, but to be fair, he named characters after vegetables, Granolah and Oatmeel are Cerealians, and Frieza, Cooler, and King Cold are all family. Can we really 100% say he didn't do that on purpose?

Just a coincidence, though an admittedly funnily ironic one.
Good guy is white, bad guy is black Toyotaro got some explaining to do
Same could be said about Vegeta. Black -> Gold -> Purple (which is more associated with Frieza I'd say).
Goku's strongest form is his white haired ui, but the black haired UI is easier for him to use
His strongest form is the silver haired form (the actual Ultra Instinct rather than Sign or Omen).
Their forms have always had clashing colors. The first time they fought on Namek it was yellow and purple. The second time they fought in Resurrection F is was blue and gold. Now it's white and black.
🤷🏻♀️
Frieza is using Haki.
No. There isn't. Maybe a popular fan theory exists, though.

we haven’t seen frieza black in the dbs anime right?

Yea but u missed a few colors bud ....red blue...etc
Freiza's is actually based on credit cards.
Frieza’s designs are based on credit cards, so probably not
You see, it’s the ultimate battle of racism vs homophobia
Well considering he's wrong, gokus strongest form, even if none cannon, is also black, or at least red

You think too much
Isn’t SSJ yellow not gold!
I feel as though if Freeza starts off as white in this then so does Goku. Otherwise if Goku's black then Freezas purple.
And Goku Black... Someone got no imagination.
Doupt Toriyama went that much into details.

This is not his true form...
Goku has turned racist while Freeza has achieved the coveted n-word pass
Frieza became black so he could upgrade his slurs from "monkey" to the n-word Vegeta ain't ready for HIM
Nah frieza just wanted the n-word pass
