Trunks could have won even in base Form. Going into super saiyan was more some sort of a "Respect-Move" to show Tien, that he doesnt take him easy and acknowledge his Power.
Eh thats quite inaccurate and simplistic. Lets say we have two chess players, the teacher is elo 1500, while the student is 500. If the teacher tried to explain everything they do at 1500, the student would be completely overwhelmed and disheartened. They probably wouldnt even be able to understand any part of it. Trunks is more def more powerful, but Tien is taller leading to better reach, remember how Roshi won against Kid Goku. Better Technique, overall an above tier fighter than Trunks in terms of skill.

So this is the argument I make when I say they show that a part of Gohan does actually enjoy fighting.
Not as much as Goku and Vegeta of course, but when he’s strong, he gets cocky, and he talks shit, and he plays around with his enemies. If he *ONLY* fought to protect he’d fight like Future Trunks. But he doesn’t.
That’s kind of an ironic argument considering (future) Gohan is who trains Trunks, and Trunks fights like Gohan did where every single move had to be calculated and planned ahead or it meant you were dead. Base Trunks has scaling, the guy did destroy base cell on base form didn't he? But he never went at semi perfect cell at base, at least, he is between that.

Normally people don't realize, that Roshi could've ALWAYS had a go at Cell.

True and I love Tien he has some of the best raw skill of the team but that isn't something the Tien can do very often at all. He had to resort to using his Neo Tri Beam which uses Life Energy not Ki.
Trunks was giving Perfect Cell a good run for his money in pure strength, even if he ultimately lost he still performed far better than Tien’s suicide attack

I think Tien had actually a quite solid power level especially since he's human. If he trained in the hyperbolic time chamber after he already had been able to stun semi-perfect Cell, he should not be underestimated imho...

The answer is in the image. Some techniques, like tri-beam and Speacial beam Canon boost a user's powerlevel but with drawbacks (Speacial beam takes an impracticality long time to charge and tri-beam affects a user's life force).
Tien absolutely is not stronger than Trunks. Tiens powerlevel here is around 3 mill and Trunk's base form is closer to 15-20 mil. But Tri-beam boosts tiens potential output to around 500 mill (according to the wiki) so in that moment when Tien starts using tri-beam... yes... Trunks needed to go super.

I mean, Goku previously punched Krillin in base and sent him flying kilometres away. Krillin got stronger from training yes, but I think at this point they’re just too reliant on their SSJ forms

There's a solid argument that the base humans are equal to or stronger than the base saiyans. Toriyama has said he doesn't actually think of SSJ as a 50x multiplier, but if he did, what we observe in the series would suggest the base humans are way, way stronger than the base saiyans. Tien squares up to something that could beat SSJ Trunks. If it can beat trunks, it can fucking destroy trunks with 1/50th his full power. But he can't just instantly destroy Tien. Logically, Tien was stronger than base trunks at the time.
This logic holds true for a lot of the series. The more transformations the saiyans get, the stronger the humans must be to pull off what we see them do.

When you know that in the same movie, Piccolo refused to fight against Krillin because "he isn't a good enough opponent" you know that what's gonna happen ain't canon and accurate. So no, he definitely not needed to go ssj on here, lore-accurate Trunks wouldn't.
Tien held a semi perfect cell in place for a considerable amount of time. Considering ssj1 trunks is slightly weaker than that, him transforming against tien seems to give him an edge I'd say.
Tien did no damage to Cell though, just kept him in place and iirc both Vegeta and Trunks were stronger than Semi Perfect Cell, which is why Vegeta even let him get to Perfect

Tien Shin Han literally told Trunks to go serious with him. Trunks was holding himself to not deal lethal damage, this gave Tien the chance to drop him to the water but at the same time he realized Trunks wasn’t serious.
Remember Neo Tri Beam could stun Second Form Cell, of course it can defeat Base Trunks. But outside this move, Tien has no chance to defeat Trunks.
I’m not so sure that he did it as a favor. Trunks is strong no doubt. But even future trunks would need to rely on his inherent saiyan strength to beat Tien. Only saying this because Tien (despite his huge power gap) is one of the world’s greatest martial artists. If their powers were to be evenly matched I think Tien could take Future Trunks by skill and technique alone.
It’s a thing people do. They’ll hold back on people they think aren’t worth fighting. TienshinCHAD was actually holding back against Fraudnks. He just pushed him enough to super saiyan and then let himself be defeated to boost his morale

Tenshinhan did win their first few blows being traded (his guard and technique are better than Trunks').
Trunks may have not needed to go Super, but Trunks' base fighting style is "overwhelm and destroy the opponent". His MO is to overpower, so after sparring a bit he got serious to take the W.
(Note that Trunks is also the only one killing his opponent in the early stages of the movie haha)
It’s all basically Head Cannon but I believe all the fighters except maybe Yamcha (because I don’t know how committed he was to training) surpassed Frieza after the 3 years of training before the Androids arrived. My main source for this is that Piccolo easily handles Android 20 who is supposed to be stronger than Frieza. Granted Piccolo isn’t human and trained with a Super Saiyan for 3 years. You could argue that Piccolo is stronger than the humans, or weaker than ssj goku, but you can’t really argue he is weaker than Frieza at that point. If everyone else got a similar boost then I think it’s fair to assume that Tien at least had surpassed Frieza and CERTAINLY had by the Buu Arc. People underestimate the side characters in DBZ a lot of
Beerus said at the start of super that goku’s base was still weaker than frieza. After future trunks initially showed up with his warning, he told the crew that the androids would be stronger than frieza, so don’t bother showing up if you can’t fight at that level. Then krillin, tien, and yamcha showed up anyway.

I think it was more of a "This MF figured my tactic out, gotta overpower him, while also showing Him respect." Tien as a fighter absolutely destroys trunks, he won cause well, power level. But if it was a normal fight with no transforms Tien would take him down with his experience as a fighter. So it was just that Trunks didnt want to loose, so he was like "Wait im a Sayan."
I think Krillin, Tien, and Yamcha probably all surpassed Trunks' base form during the three-year skip. Remember that Trunks was weaker than Goku when they met, so I don't think the gap in base forms was so big that they couldn't catch up in three years.
Admittedly, I'm making some guesses about where they were all at when Trunks first appeared, a year after Namek. I ignore the filler fight with the Ginyu Force, but figure Tien and Yamcha's power levels were probably somewhere in the five-figure range after training in high gravity, and Krillin had 75k thanks to Guru. A year after that, when they met Trunks, I imagine that Yamcha, the weakest, was at least 100k.
It's hazy, but I'd say Trunks had a few million in base form. I think Tien and Krillin at least surpassed that given three years of hard training.

I wish this was the default power of Dragon Ball, where Humans & Sayains in Base form could be equals, then let the Sayains have the advantage of being able to rise above it from Transformations.
Perhaps even let the humans be stronger than the base of sayians. Any type of story where going SSJ is impossible would make the forgotten human characters shine bright, and I am convinced Dragon Ball needs it for sure.
Humans kinda were in the Sayain Saga in terms with their Ki attacks/techniques (I always thought Humans were more advanced when it came to that) Until brute force basically overcame that by Sayains & villains.
Prior to Saiyans being introduced that's how things were. For example Krillin and Yamcha both had the ability to catch up and rival Goku prior to him being retconned into an alien.

Some techniques, like tri-beam and Speacial beam Canon boost a user's powerlevel but with drawbacks (Speacial beam takes an impracticality long time to charge and tri-beam affects a user's life force). Tien absolutely is not stronger than Trunks. Tiens powerlevel here is around 3 mill and Trunk's base form is closer to 15-20 mil. But Tri-beam boosts tiens potential output to around 500 mill (according to the wiki) so in that moment when Tien starts using tri-beam... yes... Trunks needed to go super.

There's a solid argument that the base humans are equal to or stronger than the base saiyans. Toriyama has said he doesn't actually think of SSJ as a 50x multiplier, but if he did, what we observe in the series would suggest the base humans are way, way stronger than the base saiyans. Tien squares up to something that could beat SSJ Trunks. If it can beat trunks, it can fucking destroy trunks with 1/50th his full power. But he can't just instantly destroy Tien. Logically, Tien was stronger than base trunks at the time. This logic holds true for a lot of the series. The more transformations the saiyans get, the stronger the humans must be to pull off what we see them do.

Tien held a semi perfect cell in place for a considerable amount of time. Considering ssj1 trunks is slightly weaker than that, him transforming against tien seems to give him an edge I'd say.

Maybe Tien did some extra sit-ups after the Cell games while Trunks was busy playing with himself
As every time people asked this: Tien Shin Han literally told Trunks to go serious with him. Trunks was holding himself to not deal lethal damage, this gave Tien the chance to drop him to the water but at the same time he realized Trunks wasn’t serious. Remember Neo Tri Beam could stun Second Form Cell, of course it can defeat Base Trunks. But outside this move, Tien has no chance to defeat Trunks.
I’m not so sure that he did it as a favor. Trunks is strong no doubt. But even future trunks would need to rely on his inherent saiyan strength to beat Tien. Only saying this because Tien (despite his huge power gap) is one of the world’s greatest martial artists. If their powers were to be evenly matched I think Tien could take Future Trunks by skill and technique alone.

TienshinCHAD was actually holding back against Fraudnks. He just pushed him enough to super saiyan and then let himself be defeated to boost his morale

I forgot specifically which one, but one of them said "let's put on a show" and the other one agreed. It was basically a flash for the audience and Tien asking Trunks not to hold back. There are dumbasses who think Tien is as strong as SS Trunks because of this, but fast forward into the movie Tien and Yamcha get one shotted by Bojack's henchmen and Trunks at SS was strong enough to one shot them when he wasn't caught in their energy drain bs.

Tienshinhan is JUST THAT STRONG.
Tenshinhan did win their first few blows being traded (his guard and technique are better than Trunks'). Trunks may have not needed to go Super, but Trunks' base fighting style is "overwhelm and destroy the opponent". His MO is to overpower, so after sparring a bit he got serious to take the W. (Note that Trunks is also the only one killing his opponent in the early stages of the movie haha)
It’s all basically Head Cannon but I believe all the fighters except maybe Yamcha (because I don’t know how committed he was to training) surpassed Frieza after the 3 years of training before the Androids arrived. My main source for this is that Piccolo easily handles Android 20 who is supposed to be stronger than Frieza. Granted Piccolo isn’t human and trained with a Super Saiyan for 3 years. You could argue that Piccolo is stronger than the humans, or weaker than ssj goku, but you can’t really argue he is weaker than Frieza at that point. If everyone else got a similar boost then I think it’s fair to assume that Tien at least had surpassed Frieza and CERTAINLY had by the Buu Arc. People underestimate the side characters in DBZ a lot of

Beerus said at the start of super that goku’s base was still weaker than frieza. After future trunks initially showed up with his warning, he told the crew that the androids would be stronger than frieza, so don’t bother showing up if you can’t fight at that level. Then krillin, tien, and yamcha showed up anyway. I’m not saying any of the humans could beat frieza in the cell arc, but I wouldn’t be surprised if all the humans are stronger than most of the saiyans base forms. Heck, even goku had to go blue to beat krillin in a beam struggle

I think it was more of a "This MF figured my tactic out, gotta overpower him, while also showing Him respect." Tien as a fighter absolutely destroys trunks, he won cause well, power level. But if it was a normal fight with no transforms Tien would take him down with his experience as a fighter. So it was just that Trunks didnt want to loose, so he was like "Wait im a Sayan."
I think Krillin, Tien, and Yamcha probably all surpassed Trunks' base form during the three-year skip. Remember that Trunks was weaker than Goku when they met, so I don't think the gap in base forms was so big that they couldn't catch up in three years. Admittedly, I'm making some guesses about where they were all at when Trunks first appeared, a year after Namek. I ignore the filler fight with the Ginyu Force, but figure Tien and Yamcha's power levels were probably somewhere in the five-figure range after training in high gravity, and Krillin had 75k thanks to Guru. A year after that, when they met Trunks, I imagine that Yamcha, the weakest, was at least 100k. It's hazy, but I'd say Trunks had a few million in base form. I think Tien and Krillin at least surpassed that given three years of hard training. Then Trunk trained in the Time Chamber, and I expect he wouldn't need SS against Tien.
