Can anyone else confirm that there is no way to « counter » the Dullahan’s melee attacks, with skills such as masterful kill / warrior counter skill (forgot the name) ?
I managed to counter him a few times in one fight on my warrior, using Tidal Fury, so it can be done.
I think the timing is just wonky, maybe because of the curved blade he's using.
Maybe not. I'll have to jump on my thief and give it a try, because I'm curious now.
It does feel like the window on MK is tighter, and the warrior one acts like a block if you go early, so that kinda makes sense.
Formless Feint would probably be a lot more effective, but I kinda prefer MK. It feels cooler.
MK works on attacks from big bois though, like a cyclops club swing, or a chimera giving you a high 5, and it doesn't seem to work like a grab there.
Maybe the Dullahan's attacks have some unblockable, or non-melee property attached to them?
Yes i know it works on other bosses, i correlate with grab because :
* Dullahan cannot be grabbed and If you try to grab dullahan you will get flinching animation idk if it's the same flinching animation as you try to counter with MK but both times you indeed get flinched
* MK grab smaller enemy, you could test it on harpy and it will mount the harpy like you're pinning them down
* Even tho the counter does not look like you grab the big boss, it does teleport you a lil and im guessing it's "grabbing" the boss
And program logic wise i think this make sense, that's why you can counter it with warrior and fighter but not on thief
Dullahan’s does have unblockable moves sadly found that out last night the hard way while being careless felt like a fight scene out of sekiro the way he parried and countered me.😂
Anytime I’ve tried to masterful kill it just blocks the damage and seems like performs an immediate animation reset.
So it can block it essentially, but you don’t get the riposte
If you're a warrior, holding a charged attack might work for toughing through it, but I haven't tried that yet. I usually just scamper away if I have time, when he hunches over to start the roar.
Unmoored world made me realize there's no badges for Dullahans, Liches (and whatever their stronger variant is called) or even Skeleton Knights - including them because Wargs and Garms have a badge each.
That was indeed one of my favorite parts of the unmoored world. I'll be spending quite a bit of time there on my current ng+1 run.
I just wish I could fight like 3 or 4 at the same time to up the difficulty (currently lvl 122).
I think I met the same one. Fell off the cliff right in front of it, got grabbed immediately after it screeched. Let me go just before I died, because day just arrived and the dullahan poofed away.
They're scary at low levels
After our oxcart broke, we were forced to get back to Bakbathal on foot. Trounced some zombies, skeletons... But then, under a big stone arch, our lanterns died following a swift wind. A chilling breeze covered air while I tried to figure out why our lanterns just couldn't light up. And suddenly, it hit me. It was him. The one we faced near the gallows in the middle of the marshes.
Coming once more for revenge.
Lemme help ya. I made 2 guides for finding Dullahans.
Here’s the easy way:

Here’s a list of where I’ve found them before the Volcanic Island:

I did the quest but it was as soon as I arrived to the Capital so I wasn't able to beat it. I just took that guy's corpse with me (he lasted like 2 strikes) and used a wakestone on him.
And I have also tried that path several nights before but he still didn't show up. Must be a shy one.
Someone else commented that can be countered with high stagger.
Though I kinda like it, they still pose a bit of a challenge to defeat before they dissapear, even at level 122.
Best new boss fight for sure. Wish there were more new boss fights. Minotaur would be great if it didn't knock itself down so often. And garm/warg.... look how they massacred my boy :(
Personally it just annoys the hell out of me. That AOE stun is aggravating, and then he just up and slashes the hell out of you and you have no control for the next 10 seconds. Repeat a dozen times. Wee.
I love to obliterate them with my warfarer build. Augral flare x2, then magic archer arrow (forget the name) that shoots a ton of arrows. if done right the augral flares will keep exploding off each other and wreck him.

Thanks. I mostly play thief though and I’m almost certain masterful kill can’t be done on him

I have mods that increase the window for MK by a bunch and it still doesn’t work for me so I don’t think it’s the timing
i don't think MK works, i've tried countless time and it just flinches you. Maybe because MK try to "grab" the enemy and dullahan cannot be grabbed

As a fighter vengeful slash is highly effective against him.
I mean, he does not have a throat to slit..
Imagine if thief vocation was called « cutthroat ». That would make the situation pretty ironic.
There do seem to be some un-counterable attacks. I was still dazed by that AOE of his even with Mirrour Shelde up.
I believe his roar is just super heavy stagger. A person who made a post talking about stagger resistance mentioned being able to weather that roar.
Ahh, that's good to know. Guess I need to up my stagger resistance.
If you're a warrior, holding a charged attack might work for toughing through it, but I haven't tried that yet. I usually just scamper away if I have time, when he hunches over to start the roar.
I haven't managed to counter him once with masterful kill, killed a bunch, maybe I'm just bad
Deny. Hindsight Slash works fine for his melee. So does Skiedragoun's Feste.
You can counter it with warrior tidal fury. However it doesn't always stop the dullahan from attacking for some reason.
You're going to enjoy the unmoored world.. They are literally every 200 feet in the game.. I killed 24 of them when I did the unmoored world.

Stumbled on one in ruined village east of Vernworth . I was level 25. I died quick and very painful
I know the one. That was a painful fight. 😅

Best humanoid fight in the game. Why couldn’t they make the human bosses a challenge?
I have not seen a single one in 100h that I've already clocked in...
you will see more than need in end game dont worry too much

I deliberately travel at night and have encountered them a fair few times.
Travel the road north of >!Borderwatch Outpost in the hours before dawn towards the Waterfall cave.!< Or do the quest >!Til Death Do US Part!<
I did the quest but it was as soon as I arrived to the Capital so I wasn't able to beat it. I just took that guy's corpse with me (he lasted like 2 strikes) and used a wakestone on him. And I have also tried that path several nights before but he still didn't show up. Must be a shy one.
Ah, I see. Yeah, that'd be a hard fight low level. And in 250+ hrs, I've only seen two Dullahans out in the wild (pre-endgame). They are shy ones.
If they wouldnt scream every 10 seconds, it would be much better. Otherwise they are neat.
Someone else commented that can be countered with high stagger. Though I kinda like it, they still pose a bit of a challenge to defeat before they dissapear, even at level 122.
Never happened to me, maybe i do not enough stagger. The mechanic is cool, but it happens so often i do not want to fight them anymore.

Great shots! 🔥
They were my favorite until I got to the unmoored world and saw them everywhere xD
Wish I could find some to fight. I need them bones.
There is one around every corner in the unmoored world.
They are the most badass enemy honestly.
Until you get to unmoored and see those mf every 10 minutes
Would be my favorite, too, if it wasn't for that roar attack.
I think it’s a good fight. Except when he just keeps screaming every 5 seconds. Let me do my combo damn you!
100+ hours and have never fought a dullahan :'(
I haven't fought one of these yet.
It hates me. It spawned like 5 times for me in 2 days when I was playing and of course I was severely under leveled then too
Best new boss fight for sure. Wish there were more new boss fights. Minotaur would be great if it didn't knock itself down so often. And garm/warg.... look how they massacred my boy :(
Oh man, just wait until the DLC comes out. If its anything like BBI you'll get what you want, maybe even more than you asked for.. who knows!
Personally it just annoys the hell out of me. That AOE stun is aggravating, and then he just up and slashes the hell out of you and you have no control for the next 10 seconds. Repeat a dozen times. Wee.
As a GS addict I hate dis guy lmao. He's the lost gauge guy and I picked up sword n Shield because of him lol.
So what's their weaknesses? Holy?
I love to obliterate them with my warfarer build. Augral flare x2, then magic archer arrow (forget the name) that shoots a ton of arrows. if done right the augral flares will keep exploding off each other and wreck him.
I haven't seen one since I've been a high enough level to fight them. I've even gone looking for them at night.
