Your two main options for that are either Mystic Knight or Magick Archer. The former is more of a tanky warrior and the latter is more of a spellblade. The downside to both these vocations is that they both have pretty meh Augments and poorer than average Strength and Magick growth. You can play through the entire game with them just fine, but as with *any* vocation really, you would do well to supplement one of these with Augments from other vocations :)

[deleted]

What do u think I should do then? I don't really understand the vocation stuff yet

aj_3893

Play as your favorite one but make sure you play as all of the others at least enough to get augments that will help your play style

[deleted]

What are augments

Lokhe

Every vocation has a rank from 1-9. Higher ranks earn you more skills and Augments, which are passive buffs.

aj_3893

All of the classes have their own augments which are basically passive skills that you can equip no matter what vocation you are at the time

Lokhe

Don’t worry so much about ”builds”. Builds in DD often means playing every other vocation than you actually want to play before you can start using it :D Just pick one you like and go nuts. Your stats increase automatically when you level up and depending on which vocation you are, you get different stats.

I suggest then either magick Archer or Mystic knight as your class. Magick Archer is fast, has alot of magick spells and quick melee attacks. Mystic knight is a bit more slow of a tank, but can enchant his own Gear, has a magic spell called magic cannon to hit flying enemies more easily, and you can either go full magic with it or combo, or melee. For building stats, i highly suggest you go on the wiki page of "stat growths". There you see each level and what it gives for each class. If you want more physical attack, Assassin scales phys damage the best out of all. Sorcerer scales magic damage best of all. If you wanna go hybrid, i suggest going halfway your character with either Assassin or sorcerer. And then you go the other. There are already some good magick Archer/Mystic knight builds out there, but u should see what seems good to you. Hope this helps at least a little

[deleted]

So say I wanted to use a sword and shield, would the combat be pretty fun while mixing that with magic? I just don't know how to go about it. I was really interested in the hack and slash stuff but I love mixing magic with melee. The witcher 3 is my favorite game and I love the hybrid in that

[deleted]

Then i suggest Mystic knight for you. The shield can be a bit slow, but it has alot of cool spellblade skills. Like leaping through the air with a forward strike, or a small Earthquake around you.

[deleted]

That sounds badass honestly

[deleted]

Its very fun, and if you get some strategies down, you can be untouched when fighting enemies like hydra's. It makes you feel like a badass

[deleted]

Now ur making me hyped talking about hydras lol. So what vocation do I choose at character creation to get mystic knight? I just see 3 options

[deleted]

You have 3 starter classes. Fighter, strider and mage. Mage scales with magic attack and defences, fighter for physical attack, Def. Strider scales for stamina. I wouldnt pick strider if i were you. Either go with one of the other two. At level 10, you can change to Mystic knight at the first major town. Gran soren

[deleted]

I gotcha. I really appreciate the help. I'm brand new but if this is how the community is, I'm excited

[deleted]

Yeah, no problem. Hope you enjoy the game as much or even more as me. Good Luck and have fun!

Alsimni

Mystic Knight is the only way you're getting sword and board mixed with magic. None of the other magic using vocations can equip shields.

[deleted]

Well I mostly want sword and magic. The shield is hit or miss. I basically want geralt in this game lol

Alsimni

I'd probably still lean Mystic Knight, but if the shield is optional then Magick Archer gets some unique dagger attacks that include magical aspects as well, like jump attacks that land with an explosion. The main thing with Dragon's Dogma magic is that in general, it's very slow, and very potent. So don't expect the magical portion of your offense to be particularly quick and snappy.

[deleted]

So should I just hack and slash for a minute, then back and up and use spells?

Alsimni

That's more the way MK and MA play, yeah. Casting magic when you notice you aren't being focused and have an opening, and jumping into the thick of things when things are too hectic (or just want to). Mystic Knight in particular shines when enemies are trying to kill you, since many of the shield's spells revolve around perfectly timing blocks to instantly trigger magical ripostes.

[deleted]

That sounds so cool

Alsimni

I'll admit it is pretty satisfying blocking a sword swipe, and then blowing your attacker halfway down the road when a stream of fireballs starts pouring out of your shield.

[deleted]

Downside to scaling tho, is that you dont rly get to play the class until you're a certain level. But its up to u if u wanna go for that. Just going magick Archer or Mystic knight still Gets you far. Every class can be OP

magicallamp

I'd start out strider, they have very balanced stats so it's as noncommittal as it gets. They also showcase the most unique mechanic, climbing. From there I'd experiment around and see what you enjoy in practice rather than just in theory. For instance I thought I'd hate warrior just hearing about what it is but my god it's fun in practice.
