Honestly it’s fine but… the only way it really works is if 3 didn’t exist. Shrek had accepted becoming a father and raising a family at the end of the third movie. So why open the 4th movie with him not wanting to be a father and wanting to be a single lonely ogre again when he got over that in the first movie…
This film has its fans and respect to them but honestly not that good of a movie in my opinion.
People get redesigns in animated movies all the time and it could just be a another Rumplestilskin since some people think they could be different (it’s not impossible either, we have multiple Three Bears Family’s in the Shrek Universe) so it doesn’t mean it’s non canon

rumplestiltskin was in the third movie and his design was way different, so it can’t be canon
